Sorry you have to deal with fruit fly. I am currently harvesting round 2 of Tommietoe, Roma and Tiger Tomatoes. This second crop is often larger than the first. Your corn looks great. I just harvested my first 2 watermelons. So sweet and juicy. Even the rind was sweet. Still have at least 4 to go. I know 100mm rain is too much but here in Adelaide it has not rained for months. I am getting very sick of watering with no "rain breaks". Thanks for your video Anthony.
Hey Anthony great update as per usual. Any tips to avoid cooking young seedlings in this heat? It’s a fine line between leggyness and scorching the seedlings in the sun. I have just had to replant seedlings I left out and cooked in the sun 😂
What is the difference in doing this on vertical vs horizontal strings?
mad to see a productive garden in Sydney, great work man!
I just love pruning, and you can clearly see how it opens everything up and promotes good air flow. Nice work, thank you 🙏🏽🌱🍅
Oiii mate!! You can send some of that rain down to Adelaide thanks!! Stop hogging it all!! LOL!!
I’m in Adelaide too and the struggle is real isn’t it!

Thanks for sharing your garden with us, your timing has really helped me get some good harvests this year, and I have a better idea of how to manage the timing of my plantings myself! I've been very successful with planned tomatoes and corn, not so much with the cucumbers and only one zucchini survived to produce anything! I hope to continue following your timetable for planting through the autumn and winter - I've never been very successful with brassicas, so maybe your advice will change that! Travel safely!
Hi Anthony, great advice again thank you. Can you tell me what you do for blossom rot, is lack of calcium really the problem? Should I try epsom salts too? Great advice for the corn too.
I always add dolomite lime before planting my tomatoes that does the trick for me. Though if the tomatoes start producing fruit with blossom end rot I have rectified it quickly by mixing some dolomite lime in a watering can and and applying it to the root zone of the plants. The fruit that’s currently formed will still have the damage but the new flowers will form perfect fruit. I believe lack of calcium is the problem and have been able to remedy it though the application of dolomite lime
random thing is use a spray of 50/50 no sugar soft drink and water to keep pests away the aspartame will keep all bugs away and it will over take all chemical markers that bring in pests and pollinators they have done this in india for some time now to make it cheaper as pesticides are costly
That sounds like a great idea mate thanks for the tip 👍
Yes but you’re covering your plants in aspartame! A chemical with many negative health consequences. Try molasses mixed in water as a spray, much better 😊
I might have to try that! Thanks
Nice update Anthony! The corn is looking amazing! I always wondered if opening the corn a little to check it damaged it all so thanks do that tip! I can’t wait for the weather to cool down up here in Brissy so I can get the brassicas going! ☺️
I am in Japan at the moment making sure I get tips on where to go around Tokyo from your videos while I’m here 😀
Nice video..
Appreciate you watching!
Hi Anthony, I'm in Adelaide, and I thought it was too soon to start Brassicas. Will they struggle with the February heat?
Nah I have grown them over the last 2 years planting at this time I will havest caulies and broccoli in April. I do plant warm season varieties and they do need a fair bit of water at the early stages to weather the heat
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 What's your go to warm varieties, please
I get Aurora from active vista you can also buy Yates summer green which should be available at your local nursery
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 thank you
Well you can’t win in Oz hey sometimes too hot no rain too much rain or not the right weather conditions like too humid that’s when the insects / bugs love the conditions , but it’s all called gardening 🌱👒🙌 I follow your channel you are only roughly 3 to 4 hours away 😉 love your channel thank you so much for your lessons in all that you do I look forward to heaps more great to see us Aussies out there doing our thing great stuff 🥰 from port Macquarie 🇦🇺🐨🦘Karen
Thanks for watching I hope you arnt struggling with all the wind and rain we are getting at the moment.
Hi Anthony, great update. As per your advice I started my brassica seedlings as well this week. Looks like they are just starting to germinate. Also planted a tray of onions, nothing there yet. Same as you my first round of tomatoes and cucumbers have come to an end, and I need to remove them, but the weather has not been our friend. I'm sure your boys will look after the garden when you are away. Cheers
I’m going to follow your tips on onions. I want to try to grow some this year what variety you growing? I got a call from the fam that the brassica seedlings all got destroyed in the big storm we had on Thursday so it looks like I will be planting out store bought seedlings when I get back for my first planting.
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Sorry to hear about your seedlings. I've had that happen to me. Hunter brown is the variety I grow these days as I found some of the others don't bulb up at the end. Cheers mate.
Thanks for the tip will get them started when I get back
Your garden's doing well and mine's doing better, out front at least. The veggie garden out back had gone to seed and will come to life in the cooler months. Lots to clean up out there but not today as it's grass cutting day and that usually wipes out my energy.
Yeah it’s that time of the year when you need to start moving on the older veggies and getting the new ones in the ground
Hi Anthony, love the update. I am having the same problems with my tomato seedlings, with the erratic weather and all the rain diseases seem to be a major problem I will give your trick with epsom salts a go, fingers crossed. Jacqui
Hope it works for you it works for me most of the time though I’m away from the patch at the moment and we have had some pretty bad weather so not counting my luck that they are doing well when I get back in a weeks time
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Thanks AAnthony, fingers crossed your garden weathers the storms.
Good stuff mate, I’ll have to start thinking about cool season veg too.
Yeah mate this is the best time to start you will get multiple harvests over winter this way.
Great update video my friend 🌱
Thanks mate 👍
Very good video
Thanks for watching!
for consistently large pumpkins the growers only let one pumpkin to grow per plant and remove any additional fruit forming, leaving all the foliage to feed that one single pumpkin. i dont know how they keep track of it, as they plant a metre apart or so, to maximize space usage to get same number of pumpkins per area, but all large and each from single plant. my experiment growing zucchini up garden post wasnt that great. even with the small zucchini variety it's hard to keep trying to tie it up to a post, with heavy foliage and fruit forming. my other zucchini turned out to be a giant, and there was no way in the world to tie that up. got like a 4kg zucchini off it and more to come, and plant is 1.5m diameter. not planting that one again. starting quickly another round of tomatoes, as first lot is terribly diseased and almost done fruiting, well before reaching top of string. buying some super disease and pest resistant varieties from ActiveVista for next summer. most of the other seed companies provide little if any detail about disease and pest resistance. seems they're happy selling seed that doesnt grow well in typical backyard conditions.
Yeah I have been looking at growing zucchini vertically but I have the space at the moment so happy for them to sprawl. With your comment on seeds yeah I’m a big believer in growing commercial hybrids for this very reason that they are disease resistant. Nothing worse than going through the trouble of growing a crop only to suffer losses and no harvest
@ : hardly any seed sellers list disease/pest resistance details. often just vague statements. tomatoes very susceptible to crop destroying fungal/bacterial wilts and root knot nematodes. i've applied Hydrolink Retain to my whole place. Climate here quickly turns soil into hydrophobic dust, and adding organic matter makes it worse. Been a hot summer with a couple of very heavy rains.
MMMM - brassicas! Love em 🥦🥬
Start getting them in the ground 👍
Great update video.
Thank you for sharing your growing tips with us🙏🙏🙏❤🇿🇦
Thanks for watching appreciate you comment 👍
I’m currently sat in the UK where the daytime temperature has been below freezing for the past week. It’s nice to see plants growing and it’s getting me excited for the new growing season.
Thanks for watching mate. Spring is coming soon enough in your area you will be straight into it 👍
@ I’ve already got my onion and aubergine seeds started so it won’t be long 👍🏻
Like the design of your hoe Anthony. Mine is a short squat type. I am going to have to look around & see if I can find one with a similar blade.
hmm...i should be doing this, as i cut off the lower leaves. i'm afraid to plant in a furrow, thinking young plants might get too much moisture. i should try next year, as it will keep roots cool. just found root nematodes on some of my plants. darn pests.
You don’t need to plant them too deeply at the start just hill the soil later. I’m having that exact problem at the moment with the rain we are having in Sydney and the trenches catching water but hope the tomatoes bounce back
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 : turns out it's not late blight but most likely fusarium, what you had and what's severely affecting my tomato plants. plus a little bit of root nematodes. i'm looking now for the most disease/pest resistant varieties available, as there's no real way of avoiding or treating these. Specifically need high resistance to all 3 races of fusarium.
Do you use fungicide? Mine were staying clean until I got lazy and slowed down the applications then they got the better of me
Just came across your channel. I'm already thinking about what I want for my Autumn beds & scrolled through to see what you did for Autumn & found this one. Anthony, is there a reason why you don't sow your peas direct? 🐞🐝🦋
Hi Verna thanks for joining! I’m actually starting to plan for my autumn garden now and have started my broccoli and cauliflower seedlings for planting at end January. With peas I find that if you are going to direct seed them straight in the ground you need to do it while the ground is still warm. So from February up to late April. After this date the soil gets too cold for germination so raising seedlings is the only way then. Best of luck with your autumn garden 👍
@@sydneybackyardveggies9612 Thanks for getting back to me. I didn't know that about peas & that the ground gets too cold for germination. I'll have to remember that. 👍
Love the content, thank you.
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hahaha your fig tree fortress is so relatable!
Yep can’t get any fruit otherwise. Dad’s also got a fortress for his fig tree as well. We have invested in a lot of netting 😀
Another great update Anthony, and your editing and intro clip improvements don’t go unnoticed. I am glad you mentioned the shade for the bush beans, my Jade plant leaves are going crispy but the sun here in Adelaide is quite harsh. Also good information about the spider mite damage on the eggplant, what does it mean when the fruit turn dull and not their full color dark purple?
Thanks nasreen appreciate this comment. I’m going to need to invest in a new computer to keep up with the editing it doesn’t have enough power and keeps crashing on me so it’s getting painful 😀 you will find that if your fruit is dull it’s either too old and needs to be picked and binned or you could have aphids. Do me a favour and check for the bugs on the underside of the leaves
Hi Anthony, happy new year. Correct -there's nothing better than freshly picked veg for flavor. I picked some of my black cherry tomatoes last night for dinner and they were so sweet. Thanks for the reminder to start brassica seeds, good project at the moment with the rain. I need to amend my comment from the last video. I mis read my spread sheet. The cost benefit was only $400 not $700. But still, that's a significant benefit for such a small area. Looks like you are getting great harvests at the moment. Well done, Cheers.
Hey mate the financial benefit is only one component of it having the satisfaction of growing and providing your own food is a big component as well. Being able to be self sufficient is a big one for me so well done on getting your garden producing for the family
YAY a local garden channel to me !! the rain has been horrendous since the 5th, hoping for some sun soon !!!
Thanks for watching finally the rain stopped now I need to work on my tomato seedlings to bring them back into shape after all the water logging !
Hard to believe we are half way through summer!! Literally!! Although I gotta say I've not had many problems with bugs and birds at the moment!! But something keeps knicking and licking the buds off my lemon tree though!! Don't know what's been doing it!! And I've tried netting it!!
Sounds like a bird of some sort I reckon
Great job. Garden looks really productive and love how you tell us what you are planting and when you are hoping to harvest. Helps remind me I need to start my seedlings!!! Thanks mate
Best of luck with it. I do like to get an early start hope it works for you in your area
Hi Anthony, would love to see a video on your fertilising schedule and frequency for each of the vegetable categories?
I am looking at making plant specific videos so I can go through these items. I will start filming and collecting footage so I can compile these type of videos
Hi Anthony, I would love a gardening 101 from your perspective. Seasons to grow, things to watch out when growing and solutions and tips and tricks. I live in the same region as you so this info would be valuable from your experience! Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion. I will look at adjusting some of my videos from a vlog to a more specific veggie specific growing one 👍
The garden is looking good Anthony. I really appreciate you telling us when you plant your seedlings, when to plant is one of the problems I have I am always running late. Jacqui
lovely 🌽🫑🍅
In hope all this rain is not to much for your garden
Thanks mate a lot more came down last night the plants arnt happy
Here on the Northern Rivers of NSW I pick my toms when they're at the stage yours are now...just a bit of colour...and ripen them on the windowsill. Only way I can beat fruitfly.
Yeah I do that as well. Also start my tomato season really early I plant out in August. Where you are you could easily plant this early also that would definitely help
Great work mate 🇦🇺 👍 👏
Thanks, appreciate it!
With the corn, do you just pick it and throw it straight into the freezer for storage? And how are the crows and birds eating your figs but not touching the mangoes? I lost all my teeny tiny mango fruits, to birds, I suspect, because I didn't net it soon enough. They're trying the pomegranates and my persimmons, but there's enough of those that I'm not losing them all.
The sweet corn we eat fresh straight off the plant that night I might keep it in the fridge for a couple Sath’s but it mostly gets handed out to family to get eaten fairly quickly. Yeah they do eventually start attacking the mango and persimmon but they are focusing on the fig at the moment. Will net both this week
Great work. How do you stay on top of the weeding it’s such a big garden?
I plant at relatively close spacings so the plant canopies shade out the weeds but when the veggies are still small I use a wire weeder to knock out the weeds when they are still small. I also use manures to mulch where needed and agitate the soil which acts as a soil mulch if you know what I mean. As we go through the season and get a bit of rain I can lose control of the weeds so I do do a bit of hand weeding as I go through the garden
What do you do with all that sweetcorn Anthony?
They get eaten pretty quickly. The extended family all have put in orders in and when they are producing we will eat corn with dinner every day. Sweet corn homegrown is the best eating so it doesn’t last long 😀
Hi. Is that late blight on the older tomatoes? progressing up my tomatoes early this year. just enough time for a few good harvests and i'll need to put in new plants also. i planted a few jerusalem artichoke (sunchoke) under my lemon tree and they took off, rambling thru the lemon tree and now almost as tall as the lemon tree, about 2.5m. Hope i get a good harvest from them when the plants eventually die down.
Yeah it was a combination of late blight and spider mites. It’s the time of the season for these diseases so no issue. Would be keen to see your harvest of the artichokes mate
Hi Anthony.....can you just put a couple Brussel Sprout plants in for this winter?
I did 2 years ago and grew some nice ones but no one wanted to eat them! 😂I might look at putting in a punnet this year but you need to get them planted out pretty much now to get any crop come spring they take a long time
Thank you for your timely help, it's very much appreciated. Thank you.
Thabks for watching mate appreciate it 👍
Thanks for dragging yourself off the beach finally 😎. Great update thank you Anthony - I'm really happy that I guessed right & sowed my broccoli (Atomic Performax F1) this week. As you know, I'm perma/poly culture & organic, but I'm testing out a few F1 hybrid varieties this coming season, to see if I can achieve more consistency & better disease resistance than always growing heirlooms. Have a great week Anthony & wishing the rain to hold off for you so your beans dry 😊
Good on you for getting the brassicas started. I think you will find the hybrids will overall do better in your patch. Can’t wait to see the final harvest
