All of mine bolted in 100° weather.
I haven't planted lettuce in 4 years. I grow in a kiddie pool, let them go to seed, and when it is time they come up from self seeding. Some may come up outside the pool. Mine are leaf lettuces and when big enough I do cut and come again. If we get a real low temp, I do cover them overnight to protect them.
Do you drill drainage holes in the kiddie pool?

Tomatoes in November??? I’m so jealous!
We had a freeze on November 1, but I covered them and it was enough protection. We haven't gotten a frost since, so things are still growing.
The one thing I did that made the biggest difference growing lettuce was germinating the seeds indoors.
I struggled getting them going outdoors for years, the seeds are small, and in zone 5b, temperatures can vary dramatically.
Starting indoors fixed many issues.
That’s what worked for me too in zone 8b Texas. I started them hydroponically and transplanted into a GreenStalk planter and it worked out wonderfully even in the summer heat.

Winter is too cold and summer is too hot in my area. I gave up growing lettuces outdoors, but I’m setting up my indoor hydroponic system to grow them inside
We grow all leafy greens indoors year-round, this way we don't have to deal with a lot of the issues, I also live in the northeast.
I retired from vet med after many years in the field. One tip is that those oral flea/heartworm meds is that they're more effective when given with a meal. You can still do that routine you're already doing with him, but maybe present it as a dessert. Another tip is give each one during separate meals. This is because of the odd chance that if something upsets Dale's stomach, and he vomits, he doesn't vomit both doses at the same time, causing you to give another dose expensive medication.
If he vomits it wouldn't it mean that it's harmful to him?
@@iwona4685 no, not necessarily. Some medications can cause stomach upset, despite being very helpful. Ask your vet about it.
This also happens sometimes with medications meant for people.
@@melissa7233 that's why me or my pets don't take any drugs. I would ask your vet how many dogs and cats they see come back with seizures or cancer or all other "side effects" as a result of these drugs
@@melissa7233The human body and dogs bodies are both the same in this respect, they have defensive mechanisms against poisons. Vomiting and diarrhea are defensive mechanisms that protect the body from a poisonous substance. Anything that kills small organisms also kills larger organisms, just more slowly.
But the disease for profit industry business model has always been based on a model of stopping the body’s healing and repair processes through the application of poison, so it's understandable that your education to be a salesperson for the poison industry has led you to believe that applying a pesticide to your dog in pill form is beneficial. In reality, there is no such thing as a beneficial poison. This is the fatal flaw of the disease for profit industry and why no disease has ever been cured by medicine, but removal of cause and the ceasing of poisoning results in a return to pristine health of all animals that are returned to their natural diet.
I take in dogs that the vet deems terminal and return them to pristine health, including reversing seizures and cancer caused by these expensive toxic pills that vets dole out for their profit at the expense of our dogs. You cannot ignore natures laws and expect health to be an end result.
Whenever you say "everybody" it feels so wholesome. It reminds me of the late great "Mountain Dog" John Meadows.

Great video, as always. I tried growing lettuce, for the first time, when I moved here (South Jersey, 7a) in 2021. And I made all the mistakes you listed. So this was very helpful.
I was wondering if it's possible to put the details, like the types/names of lettuces, in the description. I usually take notes when watching. I worry about "fish" based fertilizer..as they use all the parts of the fish thats not for us to eat,so I worry about the higher levels of heavy metals ect that are found in fish..Thank for a great lettuce video❤❤

We have very limited space (community garden plot that’s about 14x14’) and harvest all of our lettuce as cut and come again - it works really well even with Romaine! Zone 7 in the DC area and this will be our first time trying to overwinter some crops, we’ll see how that goes.
Yep, I do the same thing. I’ve never cut a whole head until I need the space or if I need the whole head. Other than that, I’ve never had a kind of lettuce that doesn’t regrow after cut and come again.

I recommend you follow-up this video with a second video about allowing some of your heirloom lettuces to go to flower so that they self-reseed into the soil for next year.
As I recall, the Maraveille du quat saison is one of those heirlooms that reseeded in my garden a few years ago.
(Not something I planned but I'm not going to say no to free lettuces eh.)

That new red fire is one of my favorites! I was actually surprised how far it held into the summer - granted I'm up in SW Washington, but it did better than even heat tolerant varieties!

Thank you! My best advice is to keep a journal or some kind of log with the dates you start your seeds. The biggest challenge with gardening is figuring out when you should plant certain things. Chances are, you'll be either too early or too late when you start, but after years of trial and error, you'll find varieties that do well in your area and you'll get the timing down pat. When I moved to NC from PA, it was tough, because what I grew there didn't work down here. After years of trial and error, I've found varieties that can deal with my new climate.

Could I tell you how to pronounce "rouge d'hiver?" It's yes, rouge, and the 2nd word is pronounced dee-vair with about equal emphasis on each syllable. D'hiver means "of winter." That's probably why it's cold tolerant! Thanks for the analysis of the lettuce types. I'm trying to get some lettuce going right now in my greenhouse! You go into such detail that's really helpful. Love the Dale videos too. My dogs love figs. From time to time, I offer to "pick a ball" from the fig tree for one of my dogs who begs for them. She even enjoys the unripe ones because she likes to chew them up.

Good advice. I am trying some Little Gem and miscellaneous leaf lettuces plus some mâche under frost cloth in Zone 6b -- we will see how they do. Also some Merveillle de Quatre Saisons in the open. Good to know the difference between heat tolerant and non-heat tolerant. Trying to see if I can manage lettuce all winter without a greenhouse. Plus, no aphids with the cooler weather (we've had a couple light frosts). Hadn't actually thought about fertilizing because it is going to be winter, but I may try some liquid feed. It's hard to go back to insipid store-bought letttuce!
That Rouge d’Hiver is just starting to sprout in random places around my yard. I’m in zone 8a(4800ft), my nights are in the 40’s now, 3 frosts since Halloween. I start it in cell packs. It loves the cold and will survive all winter in my open poly tunnel(18*F)
I’m getting to where I don’t grow spinach in the spring unless for seed because it bolts so quickly here in the south. I am loving having it and Swiss chard growing in the fall and winter. It’s amazing to have it growing all over the place! I also grow red romaine and red leaf lettuces all fall and winter too and they’ll actually germinate direct seeded this time of year here. I may try growing iceberg again. I was able to grow it in the spring this last year but in partial shade and they didn’t really form heads so I ate it more like a cut and come again with the outer leaves but that was fine because it’s my favorite type (I know iceberg is so boring but I like the texture!) along with a nice firm crisp romaine. Green leaf lettuce is okay but sometimes I want a firmer type to hold up to my dressing. 😁 Swiss chard is close to that texture for me if I grow the plain green kind so I stick with that because it’s just less fussy and will even grow in the summer for me. 🤷🏻♀️Go with what works I guess!

I believe it’s pronounced as rouge-die-VER. The h is silent and stress is on the last syllable (a slight stress). It means red of winter.
I planted Lettuce, Lindis Winter at the end of October and as of December 31st is growing slowly but still alive after several lite frosts of 29°F and above. It’s in no hurry.
I have several varieties and I’ll be planting them out soon enough.
I’m in 8B in NW Louisiana.
Enjoyed video but there are of course many other ways to increase your success growing lettuces. Feel free to add these to a future video. Best to stagger your leaf lettuce seeding dates. So plant same varietyat 2 wk intervals and that will not only spread out the harvest period but almost eliminate any crop failure. That's espec smart for any fast growing veggie like leaf lettuce, spinach, radish, etc. Proper thinning and spacing leads to success. Eat your thinnings. Leaf lettuces are easiest for beginner gardeners compared to heading types. Leaf lettuces can also be harvested by removing 2-3 of the lower leaves of each plant and no additional fertilizer is needed like you describe with the cut and come again method. You can certainly sow leaf lettuce directly in ground in NC, SC, GA starting much earlier than you state. Here in central SC it can be direct sown successfully starting early Sep. I've been doing this for 30 yrs and sow several varieties of leaf lettuce in early Sep then more in late Sep and then again in midOct. I harvest the first 2 sowings in Oct and Nov and the third sowing overwinters (without cover)and is harvested in Mar and Apr. Yes you may have to provide a little temporary shade on some very hot days in Sep and Oct but it's easy using a window screen on top of a raised bed. I also startedlettuce inside under lights in mid-Aug here and then set out in garden with a bit of temporary shade in early Sep. Good luck!
I agree. I’m in SC and don’t find lettuce to be that finicky. I sow all of my by seed in late September- romaine, leaf lettuces and endives. I harvest the outer leaves and they keep on growing. Also, leaf lettuces will also head up if you give them room to grow. Granted, they are not hard, tight heads like an iceberg, but they will form.

I almost always harvest my romaine by picking the outer leaves. I grow Parris island cos, and a couple plants will provide me and my wife salads from april till almost july here in central NJ.

Thanks for the info, especially the fertilizer I was wondering what to use for lettuce. I grow lettuce all year long indoors under led shop lights, mostly romaine type, they do well. 16 hours on and 8 off on a timer.
Indoors, fish emulsion may be tough with the smell. Seaweed/kelp fertilizer may be a better choice if you want to remain organic.
Thank you for the lettuce video. I never thought about Hot/Cold tolerance. I know some bolt easily, so they go in first in spring, I'm in lower NY, Z. 7A. This year I planted my lettuce and radishes the end of Jan into early Feb. (2. 4' x 10' plots). I had the MOST DELICIOUS Radishes, 30 varieties. The lettuce was fantastic also, 22 varieties. Most of the bed is leaf (cut and come) and 4 rows of head and romaine. Suprisingly most of the lettuce lasted through June.
I have a question about the poly tomato string. I got the string with the hangers 5 years ago because I changed my method of putting up and taking down the strings. I can do it quickly with a pole. I put 5 wire loops per side, spaced 22" apart on each plot. Thats a total of 20 tomato plants over 2 plots. The trellises are 9 foot tall, so I made a pole to grab the hooks and place them in the loops. No more climbing up and down the ladder!
MY QUESTION: I haven't changed or unrolled fresh string in 5 years. Do you know how long the string lasts? It still looks good, no frayjng. How often do you refresh your strings?

I have a question about a different video. The one about wintering over peppers inside. Mine have been inside about a month now. Little water and light, but they are sprouting leaves already. Should i pick those leaves off also like when i first bought them inside?
i didnt put in a fall garden. i guess i like the warm weather vegetables better. and i have to quit dragging my feet about getting my garlic planted. i like romaine lettuce the best. urs puts the store bought to shame. nothing beats fresh out of the garden, ever.
I live in a fairly mild climate zone 8b in the PNW.
I planted 3 different kinds of leaf lettuce and spinach mid September. Since, I’ve been harvesting once a week by taking the large outer leaves from the bottom up. I’ve had lovely salads and wraps and my lettuce is still producing.
We haven’t had a true frost yet, but I’m ready with a frost blanket if needed.
I have excellent soil, before I planted I used an organic all purpose fertilizer.
I feed with liquid fish fertilizer about every 3 weeks.
So far so good.
I’ll just leave them to grow as long as possible.
I would expect lettuce to perform better in the PNW, because you benefit from a more gradual decrease in temps. Usually when you start getting your freezes, it was preceded by prolonged weather in the 40's that harden off the plans. In my location, our freezes are usually preceded by big warm-ups with prolonged highs in the 60's and 70's. The plants put on lots of growth during that period, then we bottom out and everything gets burnt. I still recommend covering romaine since they're susceptible to burn, but I expect lettuce to grow better your way than mine. You have a wonderful climate for greens.

I'm in the desert. The soil gets flushed (sometimes away) in monsoon season. 😂
Same, here. Every summer, we'll get storms where we get 5-6 inches of rainfall in an afternoon. That's why I have to grow food in raised beds. The earth gets washed away when that happens and there will be channels cut into the walkways.

Romaine is generally harvested as an entire head. If you want to harvest cut and come again style, I recommend growing leaf-style lettuce.
I’m struggling big time with lettuce. This was my first year trying to grow food in Michigan. So far I’ve used only the soil from my yard to grow in (I’m making compost but it’s not ready) and most things do really well but lettuce always has problems. They’ll start out looking decent but as soon as they start to bigger the outer leaves just die off one by one. The plants will still make it to maturity and flower but just about all the leaves turn yellow and die. I’m thinking my soil is too dense and holds on to too much moisture which causes root rot, that’s my current hypothesis anyway. I’m thinking I’m going to have to break down and finally buy some bagged soil. Idk what I’ll do if that doesn’t work. The funny thing is they actually seem to do okay outside in the ground but I mostly grow in containers and every time they have the same problem. Maybe this video will give me a clue
I grew lettuce in my garden boxes last summer & did nice. Dont plant too deep, be careful.
You might be able to buy compost soil at some landscaping places. I've found here in NC they have Big mounds & you can use your own buckets to fill to buy it. They also deliver it if you buy a scoop full. I'm thinking of doing that again!! We cut 30 pine trees last fall & i wanted a garden out there, but the soil sucked!! So i will get compost & raise it up & Hopefully it will do better next year🙏🙏

What do you suggest for fertilizer when you're direct sowing seeds? Do they benefit from some sort of amendment at the point of sowing?
You can add a slow release organic fertilizer if you wish. They take a few weeks to break down, so adding some as you sow is fine. I don't, and I usually side-dress after the plants germinate and put on a few sets of true leaves. I amend my beds with compost prior to sowing, so for that reason, I don't add fertilizer when I direct sow seeds (though I do when I transplant since transplants are much more advanced).

I've always wanted to try Alaska fish fert. however I've always been sketched out of potentially leaving lead on plants and soil... due to lead / heavy metals from the fish byproduct the fertilizer is made from... it's just a concern... however I'm not certain HOW MUCH of a concern it is...
You could have done cut and come again with the romaine as long as you don't damage the crown. I get 3 cuts out of mine during colder months.

Move it outside under shade cloth. Otherwise, you'll need A/C or another means of ventilation and temperature control.
