What If Dale Jr. Stayed At DEI?

  • The breakup of Dale Jr. and the family owned team of Dale Earnhardt Incorporated was the most publicized free agent fight in NASCAR history. Earnhardt eventually went to Hendrick Motorsports but what if it didn’t happen? What if Dale Jr. and Teresa Earnhardt managed to work things out and keep Junior at DEI?

I think we all know that. Dale Sr once stated that Teresa was his philosophical lawyer, in other words she was his enforcer. With Sr, gone there was no one with enough people skills and racing knowledge to make the operation run smooth unless she was willing to step down and like Kelly run it and Kelly would've been WAY better because she prefers to look after people like she tries to look after Junior. She is very awesome. Teresa sadly was thrown into a position that was not meant for her talents. Kelley should've been running DEI. However the spirit of DEI lives on with Junior and Kelley and that's what matters.

I seriously think that you look at the success JR Motorsports has and that’s proof of how well it would’ve gone with him as the leader of the company. I had a feeling that DEI was in trouble after the 2004 season and the crew swap with the 8 and 15. That was the beginning of the end and the hiring of Max Siegel was also a major problem for the team. Dale Jr would’ve made sure that the team was something his father would’ve been proud of. It was ashamed that a team with that making of being a powerful team like a Gibbs and Hendrick didn’t reach full potential. The greed of one person tore down the years of hard work by Dale Sr.

Jr was the driver that brought DEI to relevance along with Michael Waltrip, Steve Park, and MTJ. It's known that DEI had plate cars that can win mostly at Daytona/Talladega back in the early 2000's(2001-2004)

  • @michaelmarburger1003

Honestly knowing what I know now about the internals at DEI, I think if Dale Jr. would have improved DEI greatly. His name alone would have kept sponsor dollars coming in, his eye for talent would have kept top drivers in the house, they would have definitely had more of a presence from an owners standpoint at the track and would have found what was lacking in the motor shop. Honestly there were too many changes in the organization from 2006 on for them to stay competitive. One thing I think you glossed over is I think Mark Martin would have still come to DEI first as a part timer and eventually full time and maybe even got a championship that always eluded him.

At the time, I did not think that Junior was ready for a Cup Ownership role. Seeing what he has done in the Busch series and I feel if JRM moved to Cup, they would be a powerhouse. If he stayed and Teresa was not an absentee owner, Junior would have been more of a powerhouse than he was at HMS. On one hand though, he did have to go through some maturity issue at Hendrick. It took Letarte to square him away. He could have easily been a powerhouse at Hendrick. What If? But as the GREAT Dale Earnhadt once said "if's don't win championships"!

I think it would have been an absolute disaster for him if he would have stayed at DEI just for the fact Teresa Earnhardt didn't know what she was doing. That would've been the single WORST decision of Jr's career, had he stayed with that witch, as she systematically destroyed DEI. If she would've stepped aside and allowed REAL men to run that organization........that would be a different story altogether. DEI already had the super speedways stitched up. All they needed was to perfect their short & mid track programs. .......and she blew the whole thing to hell.

I don't know about a lot of this hypothetical stuff, but I will say it would heavily alter many things. No Budweiser sponsorship for Kahne in the #9 from 2008-2010, and no Budweiser sponsorship for Kevin Harvick. Additionally, Rick Hendrick played a massive role in the establishment of JRM becoming a power house team in the Xfinity Series, I don't know if they would've seen Keselowski or Byron at all. You also have to look at RCR, I don't think much would've changed Harvick's decision and it's quite clear that when he left, RCR was relegated to a mid pack team. So I'd say that Mark Martin would've likely landed a ride somewhere decent regardless. I could go on forever but I'll just throw those things out there.

If he had of stayed, instead of him having to adjust to the cars they gave him for race day, it would of been the other drivers having to adjust to the cars they were given on race day, based on car setup to his setup preferences. The company would still be alive and well if his stepmom would of handed him the keys to the company instead of being forced to merge with another team and her disappearing from the sport. The past decade to a decade and a half would of been entirely different if Dale Jr had of staid with DEI. He probably would be still racing today.

Matt Kenseth would probably not have the 2013 season he had in real life but probably wouldn't of retired at the end of 2017 either as long as he had sponsorship and would probably get one or two wins a season. Oh and DEI would maybe have a Hendrick alliance like SHR did in order to improve their performance.

Mark Martin without a job? Never.
Jr and Stepmom hated each other, and DEI would have never been what it was without Dale at the helm. Jr was just a kid back then and was not ready to run the show even with his sister's help. If Jr was given everything back then he would have just slowly run it in the ground like stepmom did at warp speed. Dale didnt even drive for his own shop and knew it was coming along but was not ready for prime time yet. He and all the clout he brought was the force that was driving it. After he passed the rest could have come together and all shouldered the burden together and maybe DEI would have survived but they did not. As for thriving, the odds were against it even if they did.

I think, if Jr stayed, it would've still been a downhill slope. To where, he'd end up (or almost have), like his nephew Jeffery Earnhardt today, until Jr decides to jump ship. Though, at such a time, Hendrick would possibly already be full with: Johnson, Gordon, Kyle Busch, and a retiring Mark Martin, but Brad K. is already signed to replace him. So, Jr then looks around for another Chevy team, which could be Chip Ganassi after they make the switch from Dodge to Chevy, where he could drive either a 41 or 42 or possibly a new number or 88.
But, if not Chip, then I can see Jr going to the Xfinity series with HMS, and racing to help develop drivers, while also winning races or titles for Mr.H.

I honestly would have loved if Dale jr had stayed with DEI and kept it competitive. All the other what if possibilites are a bit farfetched, but I guess plausible.

Dale did the right thing. DEI wouldn’t have had the money to build winning cars. Plus the drivers a the new location helped him. Great move.

If Jr stayed at DEI, Kyle Busch would’ve stayed at Hendrick which he would probably not have the level of success he has today. Also, Martin Truex would probably not have been sent on the path to the 2017 championship.

So what would Penske look like in this time line? Logano was brought over due to Keselowski, and Blaney was BKR driver? Alsi does Harvick still move to SHR. HONESTLY in your time line a lot would change.

Hey Iceberg, my buds & I were discussing how J.D. McDuffie was/is the greatest NASCAR driver to have never won a race. But a thought flew in my head & I spat it out. We were all left a bit baffled & yet intrigued. So, Iceberg,
Had Paul Menard never won at Brickyard... would he be the Greatest Nascar driver to have Never won a race?

Honestly it’s a good thing he went to Hendrick. As cool as we all think it would have been for Dale Jr to drive for DEI his whole career, there was no leader there with Sr. being gone. Jr could not have run that program like he does JR Motorsports now because he gained so much knowledge and experience being with Rick Hendrick. He needed that leader to guide him the right direction, and DEI could have only sustained their success had Dale Sr. lived.

Teresa proved she doesn't give a shit about Dale Sr's legacy only his fortune by forcing his sons and daughter out of DEI. Happy to see how Dale Jr. and Kelly have turned Jr. Motorsports into the premier Xfinity organization for Chevy drivers.

I have to disagree with you, Kyle Busch would still have gone to Gibbs if Jr stayed at DEI. Kyle was on his way out the door before Jr announced he was leaving DEI, so I don’t think Jr staying would have changed Kyle’s situation.

He would have stayed throughout all the mergers and Jamie McMurray probably wouldn't have driven for Ganassi after 2013 because Larson would have been chosen over him for the 1 car.

it would have probably gone under a year or two later. Best case scenario would be Stewart taking it over instead and getting the hendrick alliance to prop it up. That would also be the only way I see Jr netting more wins in his career. Oddly enough, Brad might actually end up at Hendrick in that scenario with Mark Martin possibly not even racing full time(I guess he could end up at Gibbs instead of Kenseth?).

I think that if Dale Jr had not leaved DEI that he and Teresa Earnhardt would have gotten in a very large argument over operations and how things would operate at DEI and that Jr and that it would show on Jr's performance. After a while Jr would take legal action against his mother Teresa and try to get total control of the company and cut her of any control of the organization. Once that happens I think DEI would still be somewhat in trouble. Not in the sense that Jr could not run the company but that I think Teresa would to and try to start her own team to try and out due his son. See I am not surprised were DEI is today. It is sad to see that building today and how it just sits there. I also question if Richard Childress would have perhaps merged or Jr would have gone to him to let him take some control of DEI which I think would have made DEI a powerhouse. But I think Teresa would not stop her entire push to get total control back and try to do anything she can to be in control and screw up all of the DEI teams. I wish Jr. Would try to take over DEI today and cut Teresa out totally. But who knows would happen. All I know is If Dale Earnhardt saw the status of DEI today he would be beyond angry.
