  • What if Kevin Harvick never went to SHR? What if he instead stayed at RCR, or found a path to Hendrick Motorsports? Today we look into these paths and see what directions that Kevin Harvick's could have gone. With these simple questions there are almost more questions and doors opened than there are closed and answered. It isn't just Kevin Harvick that has their careers changed with this to. Drivers like Ryan Newman, Alex Bowman, Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth and so many more that look at a different timeline. So let's get into it...

I would like to say the 39 would've definitely been rebranded to the 4, because that's the number Tony Stewart always wanted. But he couldn't, so he got 39. 3.9, next would be 4. McClure was still holding onto the number by the time Stewart was starting up his team. But of course when Ryan Newman left the 39, obviously the 4 was available. So it would've been rebranded anyways.

If the old points system was used, he would have been an Intimidator 1.5. A 5-time champion in the 29, taking RCR to heights not seen since 2000. I feel he would eventually go to SHR regardless, but at the end of the 2010s, taking the 1st championship for his new team in 2020. Remember, he and Dale Jr had some "choice words" to say about each other in the mid-10s, and that rift would have taken longer or have never healed at all, so a move to Hendrick would have been disastrous for him, as the world's most popular driver was in the same team as him. In an alternate 2023, he makes his final win at Talladega against Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, and in his one race per season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. It would have been the biggest fan noise since Jr in 2001, and Byron would have been docked points for the same issue that DQ'ed Harvick in the playoffs. Harvick would have retired in style, with a top 4 finish in the standings

SHR would likely be a mid-tier team after Tony Stewart & Kurt Busch retired if Kevin Harvick did not go over there. There is also an effect in F1 as Haas would not have the funds necessary to start that operation based on the success created by Kevin Harvick & Tony Stewart in NASCAR & instead Haas buys into an existing team like Williams or Racing Point as his way of getting into F1. If Haas bought into Racing Point, we likely would never see the Strolls in F1 along with the Aston Martin name, though the team would continue to run the Mercedes engines. Now if Haas bought into Williams, Ford would instantly replace Mercedes as the engine provider due to Haas's connections with Ford in NASCAR.

I really wonder what would have changed for Austin Dillon if he had Harvick alongside him until now. He's shown flashes that he could be a perennial 2nd tier competitor (what I label guys who win somewhat often and are a respectable but still an underdog playoffs pick) but he just can't seem to find the consistency on tracks outside of superspeedways. With someone like Harvick to mentor him, those few wins instead could be a total somewhere in the 20s. He could actually qualify decent consistently. Hell he might actually make the playoffs without a random superspeedway win to sneak in one of the last spots.
People who aren't against Dillon were happy when Busch was signed since he could mentor Dillon, but that could've been a reality if Harvick never left.

2013 - Kevin Harvick signs a contract extension with RCR through 2016. Danica returns for 2014. Kurt Busch goes to the 39 and Newman spends two years with MWR’s 55 team.
2014 - Kevin Harvick does not win the Championship. Jeff Gordon completes the Drive for 5.
2015 - MTJ doesn’t make the final four. Newman to Petty.
2016 - Newman and Harvick sign a 1-year extension with Petty and RCR respectively.
    2017 - The 29 car goes winless.
2018 - Harvick goes to Hendrick Motorsports in the 88. Alex Bowman does not go to Cup until 2023. Newman goes to the 29, renumbered to the 8.
2019 - Harvick wins the 2019 Championship. Jamie McMurray goes to the 39 for a year, replacing a departing Kurt Busch, who joins the Ganassi stable. Matt Kenseth returns to full-time racing with Roush in the 6, winning one last time.
2020 - The 39 is renumbered to the 41, with Cole Custer behind the wheel. Kenseth goes to the 17, switching with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth and Clint Bowyer all retire. Ross Chastain and Alex Bowman fill in for Larson after the “gamer word” incident with Ganassi. Harvick wins a 2nd, consecutive Championship.
2021 - Harvick signs a 1 year extension with HMS, now moving to the 48.
2022 - Kevin Harvick retires and gets one last win at Phoenix, reaching 10 wins at the track. 51 wins, 2 championships and an ungodly amount of success ensure he is a first ballot hall-of-famer. Keselowski moves to the 17. Chris Beuscher to the 6.
2023 - Josh Berry goes to HMS in the 48 car.
