For a lot of people, this episode (and the equivalent manga chapters) is when they realized Chainsaw Man wasn’t just like any other shonen.
It displays Fujimoto’s greatest skill: his ability to make you forget you’re watching the most messed up show ever, then come back and hit you in the heart with the force of a freight train.

Chainsaw Man S1 E8 is one of my favorite episodes of any episodic media, anime or otherwise. The direction, performances, music, sound design (I *love* the soundscape of the fight between Aki and the Yakuza grandson with the sword swings and otherworldly sounds of the Curse), and animation are all so exceptional. The way that the episode itself is paced - starting methodically slow and ramping up with sudden bursts of surprise until it reaches a disorienting fever pitch that falls into a deeply emotional climax - mirrors the pace of the first part of the series itself.
Fujimoto takes us on such a wild, emotional ride with Himeno in such a small handful of chapters, and the scene of her self-sacrifice absolutely wrecks me every time.
the author overturns so many tired tropes. like the hero defeating the enemy by self sacrifice. or the protag being a total virgin around girls, denji thirsty af
Im just gonna say as a manga reader you really need to prepare yourself for the dark places this show is going to go. even at the end of this season they have barely scratched the surface. CSM is a really dark/beautiful piece of art

unfortunately, aki and himeno ship romance from the first CSM trailer was just fantasy. aki will never get to see himenos firm, sizable balcony or experience her sturdy railing

My sugestion is for you girls to watch Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It's a short (10 episodes) but densely packed anime, full of action, comedy, romance and emotional trauma!

What's funny to me to imagine during the opening of this episode is that Japanese apartments are known for walls that are paper thin. You can hear everything happening in adjacent apartments. I can only imagine Himeno's neighbors hearing this and being like "fuck, she's drunk again"
