When that girl summoned the snake, you can see all she lost is a bit of nails. I think this hints at how strong she is by showing how little she sacrificed for summoning such a strong devil.
I don't think that's an indicator of strength necessarily. What a person has to sacrifice is dependent on what that specific devil wants. The price for using curse devil's power (the one aki used on katana man) would be years of an individuals lifespan regardless of strong they are for example. Devils all have different personalities. Honestly one of the most amazing episodes in Cinema history for me. The pacing was just fast enough without too many plot holes and explained so much in just that 20 minutes. Simple amazing
so... I don't mean to bring the depression element into this over and over again... but given all the stuff that happens in this episode, I'm back to thinking about the connection between consumption and sentiment. it's just so tied into everything. I've said before than Denji had to kind of kill his sentimental side, because if he got depressed over how bad his life was, or got attached to anything to the point where losing it would hurt him, he probably wouldn't have survived. becoming numb was a defense mechanism for him, which makes improvement scary at this stage. Himeno consumes. at the restaurant, she wrecks herself on rich food and too much booze, then grabs another beer once she's home. it's to the point where it literally makes her ill, and she can barely tell what she's doing. she smokes cigarette after cigarette, and dives carelessly into physical affection... that guy at the restaurant says that she's probably kissed most of the people in the room at some point... she gets like that when she drinks. and Himeno is also sentimental. she cares too much. caring hurts. I think Himeno is anxiously pre-grieving everyone she meets. and she can either go all in, and devote her literal entire life and existence to protecting them, like in the case of Aki... or she can convince herself that they don't matter at all, and treat them flippantly, like she does with Denji. I think the mental weight of caring like that for Aki is burning her out, so she seeks pleasure in consumption... people smoke to alleviate stress, and drink to forget their worries, and physical intimacy is just another thing to fall into. it's easier to use someone who doesn't matter. more interestingly, when Himeno complains about Aki and Denji fawning over Makima... on the surface, Himeno seems romantically jealous. like she wishes she could steal the boys away from Makima. but in a more literal sense, she did ask Aki if he wanted to join her and go into the private sector. they could've been safe there. Himeno knows that. but nobody will follow her. and she still cares, so she stays put too. and then we get to Denji in this scene. he's numbed himself... right? he doesn't want anything, so there's no way to hurt him. right? and Himeno is right there, and she'll give this to him, and she's blatantly just trying to use this as a way to make herself feel better... wouldn't it do the same for Denji? well... no. Denji is coming from the opposite direction. he's been numb for a long time, and he's just starting to discover that he can want things. he's starting to decide what he wants. and starting to care might be kind of a dangerous thing for Denji. so it all culminates in this super discordant scene, where one person cares way too much, and is trying really hard not to, and the other person doesn't care at all, but they might be trying to start to. and both, about someone else. I think it's also interesting that when Himeno and Denji tell each other what they like about their respective crushes over breakfast, they're not being entirely truthful. when Denji asks Himeno what she likes about Aki, she says "his face" leading to the idea that her attraction is superficial. but that's a total misdirection... look at what she thinks of Aki as she's disappearing. "Aki can cry. most devil hunters see so many people around them die... so often, their tears run dry. but Aki cries so easily. I used to think it was funny, how he would cry in private, after the rookies he was looking after died. having someone care for you enough to cry like that... must be nice." that's what she likes about Aki. he cares, but he's strong enough to just let it hurt him, over and over again. and Denji isn't being much more honest when he says he'd like Makima, even if she was a bad person. I think Denji wants to believe that Makima is a good person... for taking him in, giving him all the resources that have been scarce in his life so far, and even providing him with small consolations after unpleasant events. if there's more to Makima than that, Denji might not be willing to acknowledge it. I think Denji really wants to have found something that is safe to yearn for... and that's a little nerve wracking, because watching him get his hopes up makes him feel as fragile as a kid that young should be.
