Probably some technical thing where only part of some surface could be tangible to touch while others don't for defense. Focusing to kill that "sword/blade devil"(?) must have been taking ghost's complete attention.
That guy has a contract with the Katana Devil. He is not a fiend, likely he is a Hybrid like denji. Aki has actually 3 devil that has contract with him. 2 of them are Fox Devil and Curse Devil which is shown in this episode.

I’d highly recommend reading the manga. The pacing is much faster and imo much better translated than the English subs
after this ep I couldn't hold my urge. I am currently reading manga most likely finish and binge it today itself it REALLY IS INSANE!!!
