  • Hello and welcome to another Budget Builds video where today we're going to be taking a look at the Google Nexus 4, one of the cheapest phones in google lineup back in 2012. So just howe well does a budget smartphone hold up so many years later....I mean it was cheap back then. but 10 years on a lot should have changed...
Either way join us today as we take a look at a budget smartphone and push it to its limits, a few games, a bit of overclocking, and maybe some emulation....
    Enjoy :D

8 years ago and it had features some phones still don't have now.
Then again, wireless charging isn't great so swings and roundabouts. NFC file sharing is great, though! No need to faff with Bluetooth settings, making sure everyone is visible, entering PINs and all that bollocks, it was a Terry's Chocolate Orange experience: tap and unwrap!

My Galaxy S4 held up well until late 2016/early 2017, when app support started to drop off, but by then, I had a Galaxy S7 Edge instead, which does things a lot better :)
I didn't upgrade the S4 past Android 4.2 though, and from what I've heard, Android 5.0, the last release for it, reduced performance significantly.

@@andreiuul1 The lte versio was pretty good if you could find a compatible rom.
It was waaaay better than the standard gs3. It had a 1.6 quadcore with 2gb of ram! The camera was also miles better from what i recall.
Mine, sadly had the typical samsung issue, where the battery circuit gets bad and any new battery you put on it worn out in about 4-6 months...
With a friend my s3 lte outlived my gs6, but having to replace the battery every 4 months. My gs6 lived from ita launch date to 1 year and 8 months. Same problem, except that on the second battery change after 3 months the s6 Motherboard got a short in the psu circuit and totally died. I hoped it would zombify like my old s3 lte.
It didnt. Btw the old s3 lte only dies last year because its owner dropped it and cracked the lcd. It technically still boots, but with no image.

@@eduardoavila646 never heard of such thing... not a high end samsung user tho; my only samsung phone is a galaxy mini from 2011, in use since then with original battery and still holds a 5 day gsm standby charge
usually the fault comes from replacement batteries which, even if they are OEM, they will always be of lower quality than the original
this is the case with car batteries too
they are binned at the production facility, the higher quality ones go to production, the lower quality ones are sold as spare/replacement parts

Conclusion of this video about phones not improving much is so spot-on. I used to be a smartphone hypebeast, read all of the Android rumor mill sites to stay up to date on the newest devices coming out, changed phones every year. Now? My current phone is the OG Pixel XL from 2016, which I didn't get until 2017 as a warranty replacement when my Nexus 6P's battery started dying. And I'm perfectly happy with it and would keep using it except that the charging port is failing, I'm actually really miffed at having to spend hundreds on a new device which will have show 0 tangible improvement in actual use. I decided to get a Pixel 3 so I at least have the benefit of wireless charging because I'm sick of dicking around with the finicky charging port on my old phone, the Pixel 4 is just too expensive. I miss when the Nexus line offered great value before Google decided they should charge as much as Apple without any of Apple's marketing mindshare to back it up!

    • @LannisterFromDaRock
      @LannisterFromDaRock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@lasest2 The S5 has an easily replaceable battery. I usually change it every 1-2 years and use the super battery saver option available in Lineage OS. The actual battery I have is around one year old. I can watch around 2 hours of video or do ~1.5 hours of web browsing from 100%. If I only do calls then it can hold the charge for around one day. I have a 10000 mAh power bank with me at all times as well in my pocket. The only "major" problem I have is that with super battery saver certain apps tend to lag/slow down and unfortunately having 2 GB of ram doesn't really help in this situation as well. :)

Eduardo Avila Galaxy S2 is known to have stability issues with its Exynos CPU out of the box and heats up pretty badly (pushing performance too much). My Galaxy S2 just died a few days ago and my Galaxy Note crashes when it heats up too much. Also these 2011 Samsung flagships have just 4GB of fast memory and rest are flash memory, so the loading speeds are slow as hell. The saving grace for S2 is it's lower resolution screen so most things it can run were relatively smooth for such an old phone.

Wish the same could be said for the 2013 N7. Even fresh factory resets produce a insanely laggy device just moving around system menus. Completely impossible to use

wow! unbelievable how this has aged so well. i still have my galaxy s3 which was released in the same year and the battery has not aged well on it at all. it'll last for probably 40-50 minutes of use at most. i ended up flashing android 10 onto it which made it extremely slow in certain tasks and gave it a really dodgy wifi connection but it still works, and can actually download more recent apps too which it wouldn't let me do before the flash.

Man, I still keep my Nexus 4. It used to be my backup phone back in 2017 when I had to sell my primary phone. It's still alive today, but the lower part of the touchscreen no longer responds.

I upgraded from my Nexus 4 about a year ago now after 6 years of usage. It was still running strong, only the battery life was becoming an issue as I had to moderate my usage to make it through the day and well the camera quality was getting overshadowed by what newer phones could do. But really, the most basic day to day tasks like making calls, browsing the web, watching youtube, it really didn't do any of that notably worse than the Mate 20 Pro I am running now.

I had one of these back in 2012.....long gone now. It was good for the money. Kept it until I went to the Nexus 6. Cant imagine using it now tho. Running a Samsung S10 now. Never went back to Google once the Pixel showed up.

I had a Nexus 5 for about 4 years. The fact that the 16GB of storage, of which about 12 was actually usable for apps and media, wasn't expandable was why it was replaced. Apart from that I had a jolly good time with it. Still have it as a backup for if my current Nokia 8 gets any trouble or thing like that.

Have two left with me, and have still been using one until yesterday. Not broken, just upgraded to a newer phone. Finding it hard to part, I still like the design even after all these years. Now thinking of installing custom ROM. The only thing holding me back is most banking apps do not like rooted device. Well, maybe I'll do those on my newer phone. Wish me luck...

Always loved this era of Nexus phones before they went on to compete with the flagships. I would have expected the 4 to have gotten better OS support though; only one new version is quite meager. Nevertheless considering the age of the OS I would have expected worse...but this looked very fine; I'm impressed!

having finally succumbed to a mobile phone late last year I can see the similarity with this phone and mine a Cubot J5 with a small micro sd card added (128 gig) which for both cost me under £50.
Does what I want it to do mainly play music and audio books, battery life is good almost 2 days for me as I'm not on it constantly.

Really the only thing holding back are these aged phones are the battery. The battery just doesnt have enough to power through tasks. My Nexus 5 runs smooth...when it wants to but usually get very hot and starts lagging all the because the damn battery is just about failed and could blast anytime lol
