I suspect the main reason american become vegestarians is due to the bad wislity of meat in the USA. With the better quality of meat and fish in Portugal, imposed by both national and EU rules, i suspect that a lot of the suspicion against meat by american vegetarians would not exist.
Of course a lot of vegetarians are so due to humane concerns zbout aminal welfare and on that there is nothing to say.
