    Hi David! Long time subscriber. Defended you on your excellent weight distribution hitch video. I’m sure your electric bikes are light. But I’d like to warn people. Just because a rack can hold a ton of weight doesn’t mean you should. Firewood seems great on a rack like that. Out side no mess. But weighs a ton. Can cause severe trailer sway. Moving your spare to the bed instead of keeping its weight back there was a great idea. Every video I’ve seen of a camper swaying and losing control had a rear rack. I’m considering an A frame front bike rack because of that. I have a little Coleman 17B so weight placement is a little more of a concern for me. Love your videos. Hope Roe is enjoying her new job. Take care!

    I have to say this is one of the best instructional videos I have seen on TH-cam. You hit it out of the park. I have subscribed just because of the great job. I have a 5th wheel and looking for a foldable cargo carrier. However I have two Lectric e-bikes but one of the is a trike with a 30in wheelbase. So I want one of these that is 30 inches wide. Big thanks for the bumper support idea. Never thought of that.

    Adding a couple hundred pounds to the back of a trailer takes weight off the tongue could really mess with the weight and balance your trailer. Depending on tow vehicle it could cause it sway. I know. I tried put a 90 lb generator on the back of a 24 Hi-lo towed by a full size Blazer. Soon as I hit 55 on the freeway on-ramp i crossed 3 lanes of traffic in less than 100 ft and back and forth till I could slow down and pull of the side. Thank gd it was early morning and little traffic. Put the generator inside the trailer door and it towed like had prior to the change. Be careful the first time getting up to speed.

      @pattya1679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly! I talked about this in the comments of the previous video and was dismissed. Again, no mention of weight distribution and the need to balance the tongue or you could have a severe problem. A gust of wind could throw it off if not balanced.

    Thanks David! - On my TT - I had a rear 2" hitch installed between the frame "I" beams, then I got a split receiver that has two hitches vertically separated by about 4".
    I installed a 500lb capacity rack in the lower receiver and a bicycle mount into the upper receiver.
    I carry two large plastic storage bins on the lower rack - I think this helps offset the second battery and the 20lb to 30lb propane tank upgrade I did in the front.

    @HansGyswyt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nice install. I know my trailer has 1500lbs tongue weight, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about detracting from tongue weight, but this would be a bad idea if a person was light on the tongue and then put heavy items in the rack.

    I've heard of a few Rvers getting their electric bikes and generators stolen from the back of travel trailers while stuck in traffic and overnight on travel days.
    I would add a small siren alarm with a pull wire, so you can hear it from the truck cab or inside if it's taken off.

    • @FateUnbound
      @FateUnbound  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No because the chainrings are not sitting directly on anything. The bikes have a "foot" that is welded to the frame that contacts the ground in the front.

      I'm in the same boat. The bike racks are not recommended for TT.

    • @FateUnbound
      @FateUnbound  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because a bike rack would be so tall that it would partially block out our view from the big back window. This way our window is unobscured and we don't have to stare out at two bicycles all the time. The low profile of this cargo carrier was better for us.

      Most normal bike racks aren't rated for enough weight to carry e-bikes. Of those that can hold e-bikes very few don't say "Not approved for use on RVs." I found a few that are approved for use with hitch receivers of 5th wheels and motor homes, but not travel trailers. My Hollywood Racks RV Rider finally arrived from Etrailer today. It had been on back order since July.

    too much weight on back of trailer causes side sway.

    • @EfficientRVer
      @EfficientRVer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      David's a mechanical engineer, so I presume he's thought of the weight and balance implications.
      I once mistakenly loaded a 6x12 cargo trailer with a lot of the heaviest stuff behind the axle, and the tail did wag the dog (a light 98 S-10 standard cab pickup) on a highway for a very scary 20 seconds or so, because retaining control was borderline impossible, braking or downshifting was out of the question (jackknife and flip) and it took seemingly an eternity for air resistance to slow me down and lessen the oscillations. It didn't happen until probably an hour on the highway. Bumpy pavement-segment gaps on a tight curve (due to an urban section of interstate) likely triggered it. It's possible I under or overcorrected the initial and surprising yank/yaw on the truck, though I think I handled it pretty smoothly all things considered.
      I'd at least want to verify that the tongue weight is still positive! A serious change in tongue weight even short of popping a wheelie, should be obvious the first time they unhitch. Things can go south in a hurry when there's no tongue weight, or it's lightening the traction on the truck's rear wheels.
      Weighing the force on the hitch ball, or comparing photos of the truck's rear wheel wells before and after the change, would be a good idea. Luckily, I think they have extra weight hanging off the front also, having increased the size of their propane tanks. And they probably lightened the rear end of the interior when they removed all sorts of built-in furniture and replaced it with the simple desk surface. Or is that at the front? I forget.
