Great idea! I have a 26ft travel trailer with only 36 inches between the ladder and spare tire which is even more space than I need for the bumper mounted rack. I will use “L” brackets designed to improve bumper weight capacity. I’ll store a small 60lbs 3500w generator inside of a 24”W x 18”H x 18”Deep, Diamond steel box at about 40lbs. These small travel trailer are short on outside storage so added a 39”L x 13”W x 10”H locking storage box to the tongue.
Mike Fogle thank you, I appreciate that. Good luck with your build, I think you’ll be pleased, especially if your bumper is supported by the frame as much as mine is. Thank you for watching and Happy Camping
Have you thought of mounting L brackets to the chassis . And come out about 18 inches and welding from or bolting them to the carrier . For added support .
Great video! It's been about 2 years since you posted this. How has it been holding up, looking back now, would you do anything differently? Thank you for sharing your work, stay safe.
Thanks for sharing this! Do you have any pictures or tips for how you attached the deck box? Does it fit right inside the rack or was the box a little larger (like mine is).Just looking for the best way to attach the deck box securely.
Thank you and thanks for watching, the box was a couple inches smaller than the rack but I did build the rack a little larger than the normal rack. I used two pieces of flat aluminum 1.5” wide in the bottom of the box and drilled through the aluminum and the box to attach the box to the rack with bolts and nuts. The flat aluminum just keeps the bolts from pulling through the plastic box. I also added L brackets, two in each corner to help keep the sides of the box together. And to help keep water out of the box, I used silicone to seal where the sides and ends of the box join. I hope this helps
BlueRidgeMarine thanks, no turkey hunting yet for me, been too busy and I don't really have a good place to go. My oldest son has harvested two in SC and he videoed one of his buddies to taking one. He's hunting today, hope I can go soon but not a lot where I hunt these days.
girlmastergeneral thank you so much, I appreciate that. My best friend works for a company that orders a lot of metal and I was able to get it at a lower price since it is ordered in bulk. I think I have $60 in the materials to make it.
You really did a great job with that rack. I don't know if I would have went that deep at two and a half feet. just because that's a lot of torque when you get extended like that but as long as you keep it light I'm sure you'll be good to go. 👍
Very informative! Thanks ! I am thinking about building one but I am wondering if it is legal to hide the licence plate or do one as to move it every time I put a box being the vehicule?
Great job with welding the rack together nice and solid. I can't say though that I would be crazy about the u-bolt mounting that it all rides on. I hope that at the very least, locking type nuts were used on those u-bolts... and I would check them often to be sure they are remaining tight. Your design seems sound... but (personal opinion here) I would have welded two receiver tubes on top of the bumper, and slid the rack's tubes into those, securing with pins. But... I have a tendency towards "overkill", lol. I found this video because I want to equip a recently purchased van with a good sized generator... and the area at the rear is one of the FEW logical places to locate it. I'm looking for either something ready made, or I may have to custom fabricate, something similar to the carrier type bumpers found on many off road vehicles, with a "swing away" platform to allow easy access to the rear doors. But, for some reason, none of the "RV outfitters" I've spoken with so far are "hip" to the concept, lol. So I will probably have to produce my own solution.
Any ideas or suggestions for me as i am with you never welded before. I don’t have anyone like your father in law. Where would i start?i have some things I would like to do as hacks that require welding and I don’t want to track down a welder for ever small job i need done.......thanks
biologistjim my plans are to start as cheap as possible by purchasing a small welder, welding helmet and supplies from Harbor Freight. I'm guessing I can get started for about $200.00 to $250.00. I have several small projects to work on so I can get the metal for those at a hardware store. It may be a little while before I am able to get the welding equipment squared away but I will Video the set up when I do.
I ended up attaching a deck box in the center on the rack for weatherproof storage. The taillights aren’t covered but you do have to be directly behind the travel trailer to see both lights at the same time. I actually just got in some lights last week that I’m going to install to take care of this issue. I ordered the light strip that is made for the back of a pickup under the tailgate and I’m going to attach it to the back of the rack so that it will be visible from any angle. I’m going to video the lights and upload it as soon as I can

Thank you, sounds like you have it worked for a great set up. Storage is definitely an issue on most campers. Thank you for watching
looks strong well done thanks 2 receivers great idea
You did a hellova job!!!
Very nice. I am for sure going to make one. Thanks for the advise!! Happy Camping!

Nice, looks good. I like the tape also the light idea.
If you have a trailer hitch you could brace it with the hitch also.
Great job!
Nice job!
Steel Fist thank you I appreciate that.
Nice set up. Only thing is that bumper's metal is just too thin. Replace it with a 3/16" 4X4 square tube. And you will be golden.
Great video! It's been about 2 years since you posted this. How has it been holding up, looking back now, would you do anything differently? Thank you for sharing your work, stay safe.
Nice tray. I really like the dual receivers vs just one centered one. Do you recall what the steel for this project costs?
Bumper looks like its built much better than the cheap shit forest river bumper i have.

@@TheFurrminator Thanks for these great tips. That helps a lot!
Nice job. Turkey season? I have been training dogs down east. Have seen more gobblers this year in NC than ever before.

As someone who just purchased a 27ft travel trailer, this is a great idea! What was the total cost for the metal?
girlmastergeneral thank you so much, I appreciate that. My best friend works for a company that orders a lot of metal and I was able to get it at a lower price since it is ordered in bulk. I think I have $60 in the materials to make it.
I’ve got the same bumper attachment on my Rockwood. Any issues so far with the bumper supporting the weight without additional bracing? Thx.

Has anyone seen ideas for doing this, without welding. I don't weld, and I don't know anyone that does.

Try the 110v dc inverter stick welder from Harbor Freight. Cheap and works great for a starter welder.
Personally, I cringe at the mention of harbor freight, lol.
But the fact that it's a cheap way to get started can't be denied.
What did you do about your RV tail lights. When you have your cargo aboard they will be covered.

the sound is not good I am quite disappointed
