  • More storytelling on health, herbal medicine and what it means to listen to your body.
If you're a beginner interested in doing more self-care with plants, I recommend Katie Carey's eCourse. There's lots of stuff out there, but this one is particularly directed towards beginners, and it's great! coursecraft.net/courses/z9Qyj...
Some beginner-friendly herbs you might try:
    dandelion
    red clover
    nettle leaf
    mint
    lemon balm
    lavender
    mullein
    chamomile
    red raspberry leaf
    and many more!

While I have not been necessarily "into" herbal medicines I do think you bring up some very important points about truly listening to your body. I am disabled with an autoimmune disease and because of that I have had my whole world changed over the last few years. The pharmaceuticals that are typically prescribed for my problems did not work for me. Instead I ended up with rare reactions and even more health issues. This caused me to begin to awaken to a new thought pattern. I began to actually start listening to my body. Instead of doing everything possible to squash my immune system, I have begun the journey to try and heal what is broken. What I am doing is really pretty simple and basic. I am simply trying to eat better foods, get rest when I need it, exercise when my body will allow it and keep my mind and my spirit in a better place. Even baby steps like those have made an incredible difference in my day to day life. Am I cured? No. Will I ever be? Probably not, but my daily journey is better for the changes that I have made.

Thunder Ridge Homestead .... at the end of the day its about risk/reward....
I was diagnosed with hi cholesterol & put on statins... nobody told me about the possible side-effects so of course I took the pills...
When I started to have muscle pain problems I started googling... too late...
I took the pills for about 6 months & then stopped 6/7 years ago... & to this day I have severe knee joint pain & my joints feel "loose" if I about-turn I feel my legs go out from under me.
I have no doubt statins damaged me & also have no doubt I am permanantly "damaged"...
I changed my diet to control my cholesterol but I am stuck with the statin-damage... "statin-induced myopathy" is my own diagnosis of what it is... no one has offered a more logical explanation....
      ☹️☹️☹️☹️

Peter Fitzpatrick I totally agree with that I was told to be on cholesterol pills to lower it, I refuse' I told the doctor I would do it myself, I did within 2 weeks drinking making my own celery juice. I juice all kinds of fruit and veggies to help my health that way i wouldn't have to take any meds, also change my diet, and make my own medicine with herbs and roots. (For my own health)

@@peterfitzpatrick7032 This makes sense most of those posion pills have side effects . I too know all to well the damage they cause with the side effects I have the same things with statins I refuse to take they cause more harm then good I am finding that alot of the medications have side effects and I am weaning myself off them just because the doctor says you need to take this medication or that medication d ones not me I have to take it , I weight the benefit with the side effects and there are way to many of them these does have to look at books for medication they have no knowledge of them they interchange them for conditions .
I recently learned these woke doctors have been lying to us about blood pressure medication they tell you to avoid salt no your body needs salt to function and when we stop eating salt it causes your blood pressure to rise because you are lacking sodium and I had a doctor once tell me that doctors are not in the business to cure us if they did they would go out of business .
I recent heard Dr Ardis say also the fluids they are giving you through an iv is sodium so by giving you sodium through an iv it cause your. Blood pressure to go down and when we go see the doctor it will rise due to white coat syndrome doctors are causing us to have stress and anxiety so then they can say see your blood pressure is high when in fact your going about your day and it is normal so we are basically their bread and butter .
Get off grains, gluten ,dairy and you will see a difference in how you feel and look

She is completely right. We are in a culture that does not take a person’s account of themselves seriously. I have even worked for employers in a health accommodation perspective, where they have rejected the subjective experience of a person. They do not consider it evidence of high regard. Even, when the person is doing everything they can to succeed, from a health stand point. It permeates on all levels including personally taking charge. We want people to take charge for their health but we’re not supporting the journey of self-advocation and individuality.

I believe you did what was right for you. Personally I would never have conventional cancer treatments although I would work closely with a dr to originally diagnose the disease and how advanced etc. I would also allow a dr to keep an eye on the progress/decline of the disease. However, I would go for natural treatments. There are thousands of people that have healed cancer from using natural medicine. It is well documented. However, eating well and herbs are better used as preventatives for sure.

This is awesome! I love the way you explain why/how you don't "believe" in herbal medicine. Also love the research vs system, and knowledge/experience points you hit on. I hate when what I know of my body is doubted or questioned, or even dismissed... or like when my husband, long before I knew him, hospitalized and with a high fever, knew Tylenol wouldn't help, but aspirin would. Sometimes personal experience is more important than medical knowledge. Not always, but sometimes.

Sorry. I'm gonna just blow up you comments whenever I hear something I identify with! SO you said, these plants are everywhere and not just because you're in the woods. I LOVE that! My daughter and I got a deck of cards entitled, " Edible Plants of the Western United States" and it is AWESOME! But, it has drawbacks. You see, we see homeless people all over Reno literally SLEEPING on FOOD!!! They have no idea that Purslane and Plantain, and Wild Roses and Chicory and Dandelion are FOOD! We went on a Girl Scout Camping trip, and when my daughter brushed her teeth with manzanita, the troop leader freaked out! I was like, "Isn't this what YOU are supposed to be teaching these girls???" anyway, I'll comment on the next point I find relevant. I hope you don't mind!

Very well stated about listening to your body. When I started waking up with mild arthritis in my knuckles, knees and feet I stumbled on a receipt for turmeric paste to mak golden milk for arthritis. I figured the worst thing that could happen was nothing and it was cheap. Turned out it worked great for me. I rarely have an issue and a lot of the time it's due to my not drinking the golden milk for a few day's.

Thankyou, beautifully said and mirrors my thoughts. There are so many plants out there that can be beneficial for the same ailment or multiple ailments that we do have to find what's right for our own bodies. Awesome Esther! Natural healing is not about faith. People's systems require different combinations to heal. The best lesson I've learned in the 25 years I've used western natural medicine is that Chinese medicine - the yin/yang - balance of their formulas are hugely effective based on several factors they use to diagnose the body as a "whole". I really believe you would find many breakthroughs taking a gander. Not only that, they have best books 🌞 Many blessings & I absolutely respect your research and experiences!

Hi Esther, I will admit I was a little irritated by the title until I got a little bit into the video and realized you supported herbal medicine. My public pseudonym is J, and I decided that after I struggled for so many years getting inadequate relief (mainly for chronic pain and stress) from traditional medicine, that I would share with people different herbal combinations that worked well for me, most of which were far better/less side effects than most of the man-made medicines I tried. I just started a company producing and selling those medicinal herb products, I hope that I do well. My kids and wife suffered greatly from my "lack of health" despite trying so hard, and I really hope to help them, and many others who were in my kind of situation, not be stuck with no non-prescription AND legal relief from such ailments like depression, anxiety, pain, insomnia, etc. I'll definitely be checking out your channel more! Totally agree with you on being in tune with your body. I think our culture today has us so bombarded with constant input that it is almost impossible for us to be still and in tune with our body. I have a friend who has spent the last 40 years without seeing a doctor and only using herbal medicines. One of the most important lessons I learned from her is that she is very in tune with her body and as soon as she starts feeling something wrong she addresses it herbally and it works. On the other hand I am many times oblivious and dont realize there is something wrong till I'm sicker than a dog. Herbal medicines don't tend to have the intensity of pharmaceuticals and take longer to work. So I end up running to the doctor for... and I believe that doing so leads to a cycle of dependency. Shame on me.
    Love your talk Esther.
Me and mine are so encouraged by you and yours.

God bless you Mrs. Fouch. I wanted to say first that I enjoy your videos and the Fouch Family videos very much. I admire your forthright and candid nature that I feel from the videos. Bravo for calling out Paul Wheaton. Another example of why I watch your videos. So I’m writing to you, finally, after having watched “Why I Don't "Believe" in Herbal Medicine”. Excellent video. I was caught off guard when you ended with the piece about doing your research. I am a research fanatic. Sometimes I think part of the reason I never seem to get anything finished is because I spend too much time researching. I got the impression someone was touting big pharma or maybe taking that self-righteous attitude I see in so many of this new generation concerning nearly everything they think they know but don’t. Herbal medicine is something I confess I haven’t researched enough but that is strictly because it is one of my wife’s areas and I rather enjoy learning about it from her. I have been on a number of medicines for over a decade that I questioned but didn’t care enough at the time to investigate. This year my wife has been working hard to find natural or herbal replacements for these “medicines”. And yes I am starting to feel like we got through the changes and are now moving uphill (the first few months of transitioning from pharma to natural was a difficult time as my brain tried to process the changes…it was ugly for a while). My main point is that I was on one particular drug (I’d rather not be too specific) that was no longer helping but I was convinced was killing me. Turns out it was. I had been on that pill for over 4 years. Just recently I found a study done by a nation “across the pond” that concluded the drug did everything it promised exceptionally well. It was being considered a miracle drug. But the study started finding “side effects”. That country banned the drug. The reason was that after a 10-year study the drug was considered poison. The study had to be concluded after 10 years because the last of the patients died. After 10 years all the patients in the study were dead, all due to complications from side effects from that drug. In America the drug is still prescribed with reckless abandon. I was never even informed of the side effects, let alone any risks with the drug. So regardless of what others may say I encourage you to keep up all the great work you do. Thank you Esther. May God bless you and your family in mighty ways. Shannon C.

Then she was surprised when I started rubbing it on my arms, when the skin was brown I threw it away. It cooled and cured my rash plus didn't attract the wasps that were hanging around other customers drinking.

I think that you having a conversation with your body and then asking "how was that" was the healing step people over look. You connected mind and body with compassion and I think that's very powerful! I think that's what make someone a healer. I feel like most people will not hear what you said and that's too bad. There are emotions that get trapped in the organs and it takes compassion to heal, it sounds like you cared for yourself enough to listen. I'm rambling now but good medicine is not just outside of yourself its within as well. Tapping can be very healing for illness as well.

Watching the video about the hot cider (I can't remember what you call it) is what finally spurred me to get busy on acquiring more "weed" herbs. The tenant who lived in our house before us pretty much destroyed the yard so all that grows here are weeds anyway, so I am going to plant useful ones. We have mallow, goose foot, purslane, and I've seen mullein around but not in my yard. I've put out feelers to my friends in various places (mostly back east) to send me weeds I remember growing up with, like plantain and chicory. I'm excited to get my hands on more.

Yes! I have several packets of seeds I'm going to plant around the house next spring. Valerian and skullcap and wormwood, as well as continuing to encourage the stuff that grows here very naturally. I can use a lot of red clover flowers (a hot tea almost as often as I can get it) so I'm cultivating lots of that, too. Good luck!

I am very interested in adding herbal remedies to our home but, I often feel overwhelmed by it all. There are so many herbs and so many appear to cover the same issue that is gets to feel chaotic in my mind. I need a chart that says this herb for this situation. I'm also worried that if I need pain relief, as a example, it will take 6 weeks of taking the herb before it has as effect or it won't work at all. I know I need a lot more education on this but I'm not the type that wants a long winded book but, I want the condensed version on what I should use, how much and how often. Also, I'm unsure do I steep it, make a tenture or do I apply it directly. I'm just a bundle of confusion but I want to get away from chemical pharmaceuticals. I also don't have enough knowledge to just go pick a herb in the wild. Im rambling but it's part of the confusion and insecurity about this whole issue.

I think this is a really normal, healthy response, Dawn. I think it just takes time, adding a little bit of information at a time and being patient. There is no quick version, but that's okay. My advice is start with dandelion. I bet you can't tell me you don't know what it is. :) Make a dandelion tincture or vinegar and see what it's like. See what it does. At that point you'll feel a million times more confident to understand what else is out there! :) Thanks for commenting.

What a wonderful journey. My mindset shifted when I started thinking about where my food comes from. If I eat food nourished by the sun and soil and water in my own ecosystem in the season that it's ripe, I stand to be far healthier because I know the power of God's amazing creation. He provides us with what we need in due season. It works for the animals. Why not me?

if you go to nutritionfacts dot org, and search for asthma, you will find "treating asthma and eczema with plant-based diets". They did a study of 24 people suffering from asthma. After a year on a vegan diet, 92% reported an improvement in their symptoms. You might want to also look into nose breathing techniques, seriously.

I use it still as my Mother and Grandmother and with success....but I am starting to think it has to do with what the body is used to and has lived with. If someone has used nothing but plant medicine, I don't think it would be easy to switch over to modern medicine.
I know when I tried an aspirin, it did nothing for me. I was put on an antibiotic once and that did not work....so I have just stuck with what does work. I do know people that plant medicine did nothing for them.

Julia Bradley , did you listen all Esther was telling in this video? Didn't she tell it's not only about using a certain herb to make the symptoms go away? To me it's clear it's her way of life, together with her use of the herbs growing there, helping her deal with her 'health issues '.

    • @norahbradley5138
      @norahbradley5138 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Inge Leonora-den Ouden did you read her comment. I asked a specific question about an herbal remedy since that is what the video was about. Obviously her living situation and lifestyle is much healthier and that helps. I'm concerned about what to do to treat asthma if there is ever a situation where I can't get to a hospital and there are no rescue inhalers. The world is unstable right now. Anything could happen. I have a life threatening condition and I'm trying different remedies with things that I can grow so that I can be around to take care of my special needs kid if my inhalers run out and I can't get more. Furthermore, I'm in the process of looking for a homestead and am planning out my herb garden. If one plant works well and another doesn't then I'll grow the one that works. I'm not sure why you feel the need to be nasty, but I'm sorry that you are having such a terrible day. Please don't take your bad mood out on me again. I won't put up with it nor am I going to respond any further to you.

So I am one of the folks who is basically stuck on the fence with this one. Not because I'm refusing to pick a side, but because on both sides I've been burned, so I am not terribly keen toward either. Er, that isn't entirely what I mean. I love pharmaceutical science and I love alternative medicine and striking a balance between the two of them is part of maintaining or achieving health when you're sick.
Pharmaceutical companies have done so many terrible things I am absolutely sympathetic to people's mistrust. On the other hand, there have been alt medicine scam artists who've killed people for profit, and I am sympathetic to people's mistrust in that area. Out here, especially in Western Washington, more doctors are incorporating medicinal alternatives to conventional meds as part of a whole-package sort of medical care and I love that so much. That has been, I think, helped by legal cannabis, but really it's also just a lot of doctors here recognize that indigenous medicines (as in, native to the cultures that make up their patients, not necessarily just Native American medicines - though local indigenous Medicine has its place as well) aren't inherently hogwash, so to speak. It's made dealing with my particular combination of issues in a medical context a lot easier.
But that doesn't change how terrible other people can be. I've had multiple able-bodied people tell me that one thing or other I rely on is absolute bunk because x, y, and z reason. Some come from "herbal medicine is bunk, and if it worked we'd patent it." Some come from "pharmaceutical companies and doctors cannot be trusted because they just want to make a profit." And, honestly, most of it comes from people assuming I don't know what the hell I'm talking about - that, because I am a younger female-appearing person I just follow the advice of others without doing my own research. Like you, it incenses me when that assumption is made because, like you, I spend most of my time researching things. I am very thorough to make sure I don't hurt myself or someone else.
I have a lot of medical and mental health problems which I'm not going to get into the whole of because I don't want to put myself THAT out there and, frankly, it's a lot. However, I also have breathing issues - last month we determined that I have about 60% lung capacity. I got albuterol and a recommendation that if I need it more than 2-3 times a week I need to get on a control inhaler. For most people, this sort of thing is pretty routine but unfortunately nothing in my life is. I am allergic to every sulfur-based medication I have ever come across. I know the doctor who prescribed the albuterol to me knows this, and she did so anyway because "it's a very different sulfur from any other sulfur med, so it should be fine." Except it's the same sulfur-base as magnesium sulfate - which I had to be on because I was pre-eclamptic and I had a very bad reaction to. My OB kept me on it at a slower drip because feeling like my veins are on fire is far more desirable to having a seizure while giving birth (this was almost years ago now), but the albuterol isn't nearly so critical so I've stopped taking it entirely. I am now on a control inhaler, but there is no non-sulfur emergency inhaler on the market. So, with the help of my doctor, I have found an herbal alternative - specifically natural vapor rubs formulated for babies. This particular one has lovely things like lavender and chamomile as well as peppermint and... I forget what else. All sorts of fantastic things for relaxing muscles, opening airways, and reducing chest pain. So when I feel that chest tightness and struggle to breathe enough, it works fantastic. But if I didn't know about this and didn't have a supportive doctor who is educated in natural medicine as well as conventional, I would be SOL, because there is no way I am going to continue to take a medication that causes severe muscle twitching, chest pain, and feeling like my veins are on fire.
But there are still people who look at that and tell me that I clearly don't know what I'm talking about. Or ask me why I take vicodin for joint pain (which is unrelated to the breathing problems) when there are so many alternatives (and sure, there are natural alternatives, but when I'm having a flare, they don't touch that pain). Through things like meritocracy and "rugged individualism", we've managed to foster a culture where people are more likely to accuse each other of faking pain or causing it by listening to their bodies than they are to support each other and help communally to reach an equilibrium and that really sucks.

    • @ingeleonora-denouden6222
      @ingeleonora-denouden6222 7 ปีที่แล้ว

LilGalFriday are you sure the joint pain is not related to the breathing problems?... My experience with my (late) husband made me think there was some sort of a relationship between those two. I am not a doctor, and I am a different person than my husband, but seeing his health problems 'from the outside ', but close, made me think of that possibility.

I normaly do not respond to alot of videos on you tube. I could not leave your video without one, my whole body my hands , feet, arms, none of them would let me. I just want to say how unbelivably powerful this video is , for me. In the last year I have been going through so many changes in my body. I can feel strange things starting to happen. I feel depressed but I am not, sad but not. So tired, never wanted to be with my children just a slew of things. The doctor used me as a guienne pig for 6 months it did nothing but make it worse. I decided this I know that God would have never left us here without something for us to use. We just have to find it. In this last month I have been researching so much on plants for healing and I am amazed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video. Truly Truly a blessing and so refreshing. Your channel is great and I admire what you guys are doing. Blessings to you and your family.

been years since i started using plants as medicine - even eating a piece of fruit that makes you happy could be considered 'medicine'... now i water specific weeds in my driveway like plantain (especially useful for the occasional sting you invariably get keeping bees), but using banana peels for my garden - plants need 'medicine' too sometimes, preventive or whatever... even things like grinding up the pits of avocados - loads of antioxidants. people that say you're 'insert anything', because you're 'insert anything' here, are just dumb. you're ignorant because you use herbal medicine? you're crazy because you live off grid? i have people assume i must be a lesbian because i am vegetarian and live by myself. people make assumptions, and for some reason they feel the need to tell you about them... i stopped caring what people say a long time - one of the great things that comes with age - a little apathy can be a GOOD thing1
