I found you on Dialogue with Marsha Franklin. Loved all that you are from the moment I listened with my heart. I am 2 1/2 weeks post-op shoulder surgery and am confined to my apartment. You are blessed. Living out the dream I would have done 45 years ago had I married the right man! But at 64 yrs old, I have found God and have finally found that inner peace with Him!! This is my blessings in my old age. My mind runs a marathon daily, but my body is running like a Model T :-) Ah the beauty of life! Don't stop doing what you do Esther! You are poetry in motion!..and blessed with your family too. Thanks for sharing! Annette

I'd like you to know how much I appreciate your genuineness, honesty, openness, and intellect with which you articulate these REAL topics. This is therapy I did not know I needed after my recent xgf left me in a lurch. Thank You ........ I hope the positive feedback you receive makes up for any misguided negative commentary. This is real value you are generously gifting to the Internet. Thank You Esther

Thank you, Esther and Nick .. for what you do .. in sharing these inspiring glimpses into an interesting and rarified way of life. I am so glad I found this space to briefly comment .. as I have greatly enjoyed viewing your excellent productions over the past year. I followed the building of the stunningly beautiful home .. and then, the stages of the magnificent workshop. Only recently, did I happen to see this additional channel .. Esther's channel .. and this new set of superb video discussions. I recently ordered your book and am looking forward to that. Again, sincere thanks from Wisconsin.

I live in suburbia and I love it. driving an hour to get someplace and an hour to get back home. was just not good for my psyche. with those two hours I can spend more time with my family. and by the two hour commute I mean doctors appointments, dentists, going for parts to fix my house, visit family members etc. the trick really is to be content with yourself with whatever and whenever and wherever you find it, it is good.

gahhhhhhh *standing ovation* this is...... this is such a talk that needs to be heard by young and old alike .... thank you for articulating what we need to hear in a way that doesn't leave us defensive but rather leaves us open and capable change ... its an art, this gift of yours... we are blessed to be able to listen to it and learn...
    A'ho :)

Oh Esther, you do speak to my heart with these talks. To me, it comes down to what we give prioritize and come to value about ourselves and our life. And that changes as we go through life. I am reminded of a poem I wrote for my oldest a few years ago. She was (is) my constant shadow and has talked my ear off since she was 18 months old. Now, I'm no Maya Angelou or Frost, and I'm sure the format of this comment section is going to screw up how this poem is meant to be written and read, but hopefully, you'll be able to figure it out. Thank you for creating this very special channel. \
When My Little Girl Grows Up
    (For Laina)
    Someday
I know I’ll long to hear
that little voice incessantly in my ear.
    Someday
I’ll wish for the constant stream of mundane facts,
    Observations, and yak yak yak.
    Someday
I’ll strain to remember the sweet lilt of her tone
as she filled up the silence and never left me alone.
    Someday
I know I’ll come to miss her steady chatter.
and I’ll ask myself, “What else did matter?”
    Someday
I’ll be old, and she grown up.
    The silence total and abrupt.
    Someday
I’ll try to hear her still.
The wished for quiet turned bitter pill.
     -- By Momma 2013

What can I say, yet another beautiful talk that resonated with me. But I do have to experience things for myself, I found myself yearning for my own wilderness time a few yrs ago, took time off from all tech and I've come out the end knowing myself, my needs and knowing my family better. We homestead, homeschool and homemake here but I always make sure there is quality time for family and each individual member now. Sometimes I have to press reset and remember to do it, but overall we are doing much better as a family and a couple. I may have to do it again soon ,there's something empowering about it. Thank-you again

WOW I so like that you also read Andrew Sullivan. His New York magazine piece had a perfect title I Used to Be a Human Being. We haven't had tv for years, use the Internet sparingly, no iPhones, video cameras. Aside from our laptop we live more 1940 mode. Stillness is my favorite sound.

I really enjoyed watching this video, and listening to your voice and words, while I sip my coffee at 3 am, and my dog sleeps contentedly next to me, snoring ever so slightly. All too often, I find myself on the Hampster wheel, and must continually remind myself to get off the durn wheel and stop and look around and just See, and Be. Thanks for helping to make, and being part of one of my Off the Wheel moments. ;)

After getting my property, I kept finding every time I sat down to try and relax I would almost immediately get up and go start doing another task. So much to do to turn raw land into a homestead just kept me moving and doing things. I have to really push myself to stop and slow down, and remind myself that "I have the property for the rest of my life, I don't have to rush too much". I have been making sure to take casual walks around the property, to enjoy the sights and beauty of the land. To stop and watch the wildlife. And sometimes watch some lovely videos like yours to give me a relaxing bit of down time.

I hope you take as much time for puzzles as you can. In a flash Sadie will be off to college and you will wish she would take time to sit and talk for a while. Her beautiful innocence and inquisitiveness will disappear all too soon, thank goodness you have video of her young self. Enjoy your babies. The lessons they teach are abundant.

As most Americans, I went through the whole "validation of self" that you speak of. Was I on target? On schedule? Was I progressing career-wise? Could I keep up with my contemporaries, or my own mother? The answer was yes - but on MY terms. I just had to toss all the nonsense, and realize that running in circles to please others was a waste!

I was on Jury duty a few years ago and sat next to an interesting lady, we were assigned to sit next to each other for entire four day trial. She had mentioned that she and her husband also lived off grid. On one morning, I simply said to her that it was such a beautiful day, I said I wish I were outdoors instead of inside this room. She answered by saying "lovely weather for making maple syrup." Interesting to think that as we sat in that courtroom, she was occasionally thinking about the woods and maple trees, the long syrup making process.

I love story time Thursdays, you say it so well. I do the same with my three children...it's always "I can't, I HAVE to do ..... First" I don't HAVE to put anything in front of that puzzle either, I need to. It's about living consciously, soon my babies won't want to play with me, then I really will have missed my HAVE to moments. Sure, I can make up for it with the grandkids in 20 years time, but I don't want to, I want my children to feel loved in play and I want to feel that too. I'm taking my little munchkins to the fair tonight to make some memories. Keep up story time Thursday...you keep me grounded xxx
