What's the strategy behind Saudi Arabia's sports splurge? | Business Beyond

- Saudi Arabia has embarked on an investment spree. Fuelled by mammoth pandemic-era oil profits, the country's sovereign wealth fund is spending billions in a range of sectors and industries.
One which has caught everyone's eye is sport. Having dramatically disrupted professional golf in 2022, this year it is football which has been upended by an infusion of Saudi billions. The country's league is now the second-highest spending in the world, having been 20th last season.
But why is Saudi Arabia doing all this? Its leadership says it wants to diversify its economy as it moves away from oil, and sport is just one part of a broad move to create a services-based economy. But critics say the state - and particularly its leader, Mohammad bin Salman - is engaged in blatant 'sportswashing'. That means trying to improve its image through association with elite sport. Saudi Arabia has long been highlighted by human rights groups as a haven of inequality and oppression.
In this episode of Business Beyond, we will look in depth at Saudi Arabia's mega sports bet. Is it trying to diversify its economy, or simply, its reputation?

No Saudi's were interviewed in this video, and nearly all speakers were featured via online calls. Well done DW for sticking to your low budget 😂
As long they try to not be racists and biased
Although D.W should focus more on climate change ecology and environment sustainable development like before
Now D.W is also focusing on unnecessary things
Focus on important things like environment sustainable development projects etc
Very true
It's a more economical and efficient way of creating TH-cam content. A quick Zoom Call is good enough for a few sound bytes.

saudi strategy throw as much money as possible to get the best players its a mickey league 😂
Saudi Arabia is exponentially growing its economy. It is getting modernized day by day. This is a fact whether you like it or not. Numbers speak for themselves
I believe Saudi should also launch their global news channel like bbc world and aljazzera
saudi strategy throw as much money as possible to get the best players its a mickey league
The earlier the Western world realizes that power has shifted away, the sooner they will come to terms with the fact that Saudi Arabia is outperforming them at their own game. Why has no one criticized the wasteful exploitation of resources in Africa, including the practice of taking African soccer stars to Europe? But suddenly, it becomes a problem when Saudi Arabia does the same!
I am aware of Jamal was killed in Turkey, but what about the actions of the US, UK, France, and NATO, which have resulted in the deaths of millions worldwide, such as in Iraq, Libya, and Afghanistan? Whose moral high ground are they preaching from? Look what they doing in Congo the EUs?
Premier League has done the most damage to football. That league showed the world that football can be bought will money and now Saudi are just following their lead.
And British are one steering all Aran oil money ships .
You are so naive. When Italian football used to dominate in the 1990s and 1980s.
What do you think was making it more successful than all other leagues.
Hopes and dreams?
Money was always at the center of football.
In every single European country the clubs with the most money or funding often win. The leagues with the most money often win the most European tournaments.
It has always been that way
saudi a mickey mouse league
I don’t see a problem with what Saudi Arabia is doing
It is the West always putting problems where it shouldn't be. The content should have been about football but they've turned it to human rights lecture.
but all i see are Europeans crying and worrying about their positions
They are going to be a the big competitor of European football league. that's why they are so jealous .otherwise there is no evil in what they are doing
Spoken like someone who isn't a journalist critical of lack of free speech in Saudi.
@@mrlilgucci9399 😂jealous ? its a mickey mouse league , average attendance of women's football in the premier league is higher than the saudi league, when ronaldo leaves its finished
Why cant you be happy about the transformation of Saudi Arabia? Why don’t you want them to change and improve themselves??
This will prevent the Western media from using football to wash the minds of followers from implementing the agendas of homosexuals, transgender people, politics, human rights, etc. Saudi Arabia wants football to be just for the fun of football, without agendas.
Saudis are relatvely clean when you start to look under the rug of US sports. It really doesn't take a long look. We all know the problems.

What are those problems?
During time of prince Salman on power, Saudi Arabia doubled size of it economy. Greatings to prince Salman from Serbia.
Europeans and Americans have no write to acuse Saudi Arabia on their doings. They should first criticize themselves for what they did to Iraq and Afghanistan and what they are doing to Africans first before raising hand on others. This is pure hypocrisy.

throwing money at every sport to be hosted in saudi , cant produce thier own tournaments or talent
We, as the people of Saudi Arabia, support all our leadership steps to be at the forefront 🇸🇦
Wish you all the best . Greetings from your brothers in Morocco
It is to open Saudi to the world, what we have always wanted! I am so proud to see all the visions in Saudi these days. I can't wait to visit!
Saudi prince love his country and his people
They are doing what the Europeans have done to other leagues.
Those teams are foreign owned that are doing that. The only exception is the Spanish League from the top leagues.
He’s a young guy! Likes sports more than previous 80 year old kings.
He’s bringing in entertainment. Sports is a big part of it.
He’s commercializing. Sports is a part of it.
Sport washing is a part of all of that. Not the only motivation.
I don’t mind seeing Qatar, UAE, and Saudi duking it out when it comes to sports. I care more about sports business than the sport itself.
الله يكفانا شركم ويحفظ السعودية العظمي
sports are an escape for those who are tired of life.
Not anymore for those who support Saudi funded teams, players, leagues or orgs
Saudi Arabia is doing the right thing with the sport, others should follow suit. Sport is very important for the body.
Are you stoned?
That was brilliant ❤
Qatar did it with FIFA, Saudi also doing the same.
Why create an Culture when you can just buy one. The rush of stars willing to sell their souls.

I will believe that most countries want us to forget about most things that happened in the country Saudi Arabia is not alone in that
Maybe you should interview someone from Saudi Arabia
Politics has no place in sports
You started this when you unfairly kicked Russia out football competitions. 👌

the trouble is the gulf states have the money while the european states are running on debt now so they will do business with them even if they have to pinch their nose to do so. morality and ethics are good and admirable things but what is even better is cold hard cash.
Europeans have no morality, morality exist only in Arabia ur only hypocrites
People may balk at that point theoretically, but in essence money talks and most distancing or isolation of "trouble-makers" means not associating with those that cost a business money and associating with those that bring money in. It's hard to boycott when BILLIONS of profits are at stake (no matter if its Saudi, Israel or China).
Stop lamenting, Saudi is doing the right thing.
I never thought of Saudi doing a sportwashing, they just do anything they want to diversify their economy, yet at the same time they have money. Western medias are just envy with anything Saudis have
don`t say that willis is a liverpool fan...
You need to learn Arabic to understand the culture and how people think. Everything you said according to western point of view. Most of the speakers never been to Saudi and the worst part have no Saudi friends

I think it's a good thing. Would you rather have them isolated and straying into darkeness more and more? This keeps Saudi Arabia interacting with the modern world.
There will inherently come a clash between the conservatism and theocratic/autocracy and attractiveness to invest. Autocracies lack the institutions to protect investors and that will always cap the interest in these other sectors. Dubai has managed to do this but UAE is comparably less oppressive.
Calling Saudi a “theocracy” is exactly where I stopped reading your comment. You’re clueless.
@@user-qx9zn2cj4e Ok?
The clash has happened and ended long ago, Saudi is successful.
It’s a part of reformation ,well come saudis.
I honestly have no idea why people are interested in football.... it's terrible. There is no difference between most european top flight clubs nowadays other than the locations of their stadium. Thr English Premier League being the worst culprit. The overwhelming majority of each team is full of players not even from the same country... let alone being a local of the area in which that club is based....
Deze man heeft tovernaarij gebruikt waaronder ondergoed kledingstukken water in Almere samen onder invloed vlakbij de Pakistaanse moskee in Almere poort
The players which Saudi has bought are kind off in their twilight period. The question is can they infuse fresh talent from across the world and make the world pay and watch them play which the Europeans have done brilliantly (eg : Messi). The middle East is not know to have a sporting culture which could create new challenges for the region trying to improve its perception around the world.
