Hi I use the technique in this video. May I recommend that when you use the masking tape, that you have the neat edges showing on the bottom of the base, and all the slightly untidy folds on the upper part of the base. This way the untidy bits can be covered with your sand/grit and so on. Hope this helps. Regards Lexi.
Yep this is a great method. I have cardboard bases dating back to the early 90's and they still looks brand new.. They are used and abused with no special care. The sealing process is very important and we normally use 2 layers for durability.
@@MiniatureLandscapeHobbies I've always been amuse by the way people outside the hobby react. They treat you like some kind of hoarder. As I go to lengths to get something everyone else ignores or treats as rubbish. To a degree they are correct but I see it as recycling for a better purpose. Stones that look like a large rock at this scale or that scale. Interesting twigs, cardboard, bottle tops and containers are all ingredients to a visually pleasing top top for me.
bloody brilliant I have to make a lot of jungle terrain for the far east WW2 so i am definitely going to give this a try if iI can get my hands on the right type of cardboard
This really works well for jungle terrain. I did a commission for a client the same way and he was super pleased with the result. Good luck on the build and contact me if you have any questions!
I once got boxes with 3 ply cardboard. cherished it. To ensure flatness use a double layer of cardboard on the base layer with your technique of turning the cardboard so the corrugation is at 180 degrees. And maybe add some plastic wrap and then weight it down until dry.
Tip: if you want extra durability you can push trimmed down barbecue sticks through the corrugations in the bottom layer of the base and glue them in place.
Have you tried this method while beveling the cardboard to slope with more subtle flow from the “ground”? I want my terrain to look a literal more natural and lose that common “stairway” look, but I think it will be too thin to avoid warping, even with this solid method. Any insights would be much appreciated. Love the video!

That's a great idea!
Dude that trick with masking tape saved me tens of hours and lots of money ! Thank you❤
Your welcome! It really does simplify things. Anything to avoid waiting for plaster to dry!
Simple, cheap and looks great - brilliant idea, thanks!
I am glad it helped! This really is one of those core skills that makes your building skills take off!

This is one of the techniques that can be a real lifesaver as long as you are in the hobby!

It has been my experience for masking tape to lose its adhesiveness over time. Does the Modge-Podge layer prevent this from happening?
Yes the Mod podge makes the tape almost bullet proof!
Yes, as an older artist, I’ve seen that masking tape becomes quite brittle and loses adhesion as time goes by.
I want to make a beaver pond for scouting. Can I make a muddy terrain and a fake lake on cardboard?
You sure can. I was thinking of doing a Video on a similar build soon…

Never thought of plastic wrap! I will have to try it.

Good idea! Nex time I revisit this topic I will mention this!
Great tutorial, Joe! Saved!
Thanks!

Yes I have done that it works pretty well. I would look for fairly thick cardboard for it though.
Wonderful, thank you!
❤
Thanks!

IT WAS HORRABLE SEEING SOME ONE USE' A CRAFT KNIFE' WITH THE WRONG SIDE OF THEIR BODY 😱
Sorry, but left handed people are 10% of the population after all…
