Making miniature houses using a secret ingredient- DND and Wargaming Terrain.

- Foam board is a really cheap way to build miniature houses, but I don't have access to great options for foam, and what I can get is hard to work with. So instead I use SAND!
Some of the examples I have used XPS Bricks and Egg carton bricks.
These houses look great on the table and are super cheap and easy to make. If you want to fill your town scenes with some more town these are a great way to get into it

how about using rough sand paper for the textured walls?
Now that is next level stuff, Super great idea!
Use that pink spackle that turns white. Much nicer
There's a trick to the shingles--measure the distance of your roof, cut the strip to length, then cut the flaps *almost* all the way through but not quite, do that for rows and rows, go back with an Xacto knife to uneven some of the edges, and apply them on an offset. That way you apply them in strips instead of one shingle at a time! Saves **loads** of time, and looks almost as good!
This is a very smart idea definitely a huge time saver
Love the simplicity of this approach, makes it all very achievable, removing the considerable hurdle of getting the right foam in the right amount, and worse yet, the hot wire cutter.

The beach fine sand idea is some next level witchery, it's hard to find xps where I live and that idea blew my mind, thank you!

You can buy chinchilla bathing sand really cheap in almost all pet shops. I've used it for my WOR buildings, and the texture is just right.

This is how we used to make most miniature buildings. We made thatch with lawn clippings dried and cleaned. Though cardboard worked for the wood frames for us. Thanks for this video.

Cardboard is one of the best and simplest materials to use for terrain. I know a lot of people say it won't last, but some of my best work has been done with cardboard and paper. Still looks great

I've just completed a cardboard house with inspiration from you. Thanks for the instructions, so easy to build. Thinking about my next building.
I've been using tile grout powder, it's got a finer texture than sand. Messier, though, and doesn't fill in cracks or gaps very well.
You can kind of get around that by cutting the corrugated part out of one side of a join, and using the cardboard's backing paper to mask the join.
That sounds like such a great idea, would be pretty cheap too if you buy a big bag.

I use egg cartons for the stucco effect, and sometimes shingles, on my tudor buildings.
Other alternatives for making stucco is Das modelling clay or all-purpose filler.
Ill have to give those a go, they sound great!
@@Falvodor My brother used to make a stucco effect using a mix of PVA, water and sand which he would apply inbetween the beams using a syringe.
Personally I like using the egg carton as it achieves the stucco effect in a shorter amount of time. (Just be sure to use 3mm foamboard or corrugated card, otherwise the walls will become too thick for coffee stir sticks to be used for window framework.
The only downside of using egg cartons if you will need a lot of them if you want to build a village.

Dude, you did an amazing job! I also don't have access to high quality foam in acceptable amounts to build my projects and I've always found cardboard buildings a bit "artificial". So you came to prove me wrong! You did an amazing handwork here and I'm going to give one more chance to cardboard (this time the double layer one). Thanks for sharing and greetings from Brazil!

With the roof shingles why not make the strips themselves a bit wider and cut into it but not all the way trough then lay then across the roof then over lap each strip over each other so it looks like all the shingles were put there individually then actually doing them individually at the very top.
I've started doing that now, it is much faster ! 😃

Proxxon foam cutter. Thin strips, re stack, cut down the middle in erratic pattern. Lay the strips on the roof alternating. You'll save yourself hours and effort. Nice vid tho
Damn. I need to stop at the dollar store after work!! I'm planning on making an inn, a tavern, a chapel, general store, and another small house to go with the two small houses and barn I already built a while back. I may retro fit those already existing buildings with details to make them uniform with the others I'm planning on making. They just have flat printouts on top of corrugated cardboard with no dimension or detail. I might also want to build a watch tower of some sort out of a Pringles can that could double as a dice tower if I design it that way. Looking forward to some crafting.

Looking great! I do no foam houses as well, but I use crunched up paper for the wall texture. It is a lot more exagerated in texture though. Now that I think about it you could probably also use egg carton for it.

Glue and toilet paper works well too
One ply paper towels with glue works well, paper mache basically

The shit you have to do when you live in Australia and even XPS foam is a premium resource.
It's definitely hard to come by down under, but sand sure is plentiful!

@@Falvodor update: I tested all your tips on a small building first and it worked very well. I am little scared about painting it because I only have acrylic paint.
@@slystrings I painted all mine with cheap acrylics and it works great! Just need to make sure to put a coat of PVA or modge podge over the sand as if it isn't sealed it will get everywhere.

Ive heard baking soda works well too I have yet to try it stand alone.
I've actually tried baking soda in some of my more recent products and it does work great! gives a more subtle texture, I definitely recommend!

Is there a reason you leave the floor out, instead of squaring up the building by gluing in the floor, and making the roof lift off to see inside? Seems like it'd be possible to make multiple modular levels to attach to any height you want and place roof on top. You do need to reinforce the roof with supports. If you wanted to, you could attach the flooring and furniture to poster board and swap out the interiors of a structure depending in what you need, empty, church, schoolroom, barn, etc. Wood floor or stone, or broken abandoned look
The main reason I keep the floor separate is so anyone sitting around the table can see into the building without it being obscured by the walls, I've also found its a bit faster and simpler to not worry about making a removable roof, and good looking walled interior.
For multiple floors I just lay out each floor tile to the side.
But your definitely right. I used removable roofs in my modular theatre project and they have worked pretty well, thanks to the open design of the walls, and the huge size.

Yes definitely a great idea to get some more modularity, I think I might revisit this idea in the future to include such an ability
I find they tend to be better for having models in the building when the roof is the removable feature
Water doesnt corrugate but I'm pretty sure cardboard is.
I suspect baking soda would also work in place of sand.

What glue did you use with the sand vs the shingles? Are you using wood glue? PVA?

Matte or gloss modge podge?
Either will work, since its covered in paint later. I usually buy gloss so I can use it for other things to get a glossy finish. So I likely used gloss here
i like it, only issue i have (with everyones rooves when doing shingles) is the size of the shingles. 1 inch is 5 feet on the table. so... imagine that 3/4 inch shingle.... thats almost a 4 foot wide shingle.

What did adhesive did you use for the sand?
Just some PVA glue! Any similar glue would work great too, potentially even glue stick, but I havn't tried that one
Can I ask what modge podge product you used?
I dont undertsand how eveyone gets these even coats when painting over modge podge. My paint just keeps wiping off
