Sheboygan Shenanigans with Captain Darrell Walton...the Uncut Version
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 2 ต.ค. 2024
- Based on feedback from our viewers, we thought we'd show a conversation between myself, the History Mystery Man, and Captain Darrell Walton featuring all the stuff that doesn't make the primary videos...sort of an uncut version of what Darrell and I talk about...stuff that typically goes right to the "trash bin". And stick around for the end where you'll find a hysterical story told by Captain Darrell of his crazy escapades in Sheyboygan, Wisconsin where, as a 22-year-old newbie on the Lake Freighter W. C. Richardson, he was sent ashore by his shipmates for a specific purpose to find "gold" for the crew's next trip across the Great Lakes. Enjoy the ride...and thanks for your continued support!
No history should EVER be left alone, or forgotten!!!
I'm buying this one too...HMM
Just came back from New York yesterday, and I went to the World Trade Center, it’s so surreal and almost overbearing but well worth the visit.
I'm still in agreement with Cap'n darrell about another exploratory dive on the Fitz for the logbook!
Are they water tight?
I agree as it just seems strange that even if there is just a small chance the truth could be found, or even just SOME clarity on what happened, it would be worth the look. WHY would they NOT want to know? What is hiding down there amongst the wreckage?
All good questions p.k.5455...that deserve answers. HMM
Would that book have held up after 50 years underwater?
@@ripperace I don't know, but books were retrieved off the Titanic that could still be read...thanks. HMM
Oh man, to miss Skynard by two weeks! That is one of those WTH moments ... lol I could listen to the two of you for hours, days, months...etc...😅 Seriously, you two are so good together, and the way you teach history thru stories and experiences is tremendous! Thank you both, and please keep teaching so we can keep learning!
Thanks again...your feedback is always sooo rewarding! HMM
Nothing changes more than the past. New information is always coming to light. Great video!
Thanks again, Michael. More on the way...HMM
Captain Darrell is the Best..
He's an American gem for sure. "America's Captain!" Thanks again...HMM
The Bellamy Brothers!!! How often do you hear them referenced? Love it, my kind of music! Love the captain and his insight
"He's an old hippie..." Who doesn't love that ole classic...thanks. HMM
Love Captain Darrell Waltons stories could listen to them all day
He could have is own talk I could show. I feel the same way.
No doubt...Darrell could definitely do his own show...this I can't deny. Thanks for your support of the History Mystery Man! HMM
"We are Seamen"! Oh put that on a t-shirt! You got a Jem there with Captain Darrell!
I know; he's the best...more Capt. D please...HMM
I saw AC/DC at the Sports Arena with The Pat Travers Band warming them up. It wasn’t a couple weeks later that Bon Scott died, if my memory serves me right. The Sports Arena was a great place to see a concert!😎 Hara Arena in Dayton was another great venue! Don’t make ‘em like that any more.
What an awesome show! And better yet because it happened at the Toledo Sports Arena...thanks! Simple Man...HMM
I’m in agreement with you both about remembering history. If we don’t remember, we’re doomed to repeat it. What really pisses me off are those who want to hide it, or change it to fit a narrative. Sometimes history isn’t fun to look back on, sometimes painful. But it’s so important to teach it, and remember it no matter how bad it is.
Excellent commentary; thanks for sharing it here! I love me some history! HMM
Salute to my fellow brother Marine, Artimus Pyle!!! OOHRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't know Pyle was a Marine...Salute! Thanks...HMM
GIVE US MORE CAPN' WALTON !!! Come on fellas....we know there are plenty of stories tou guys could tell. How about some ROUGH SEAS ON THE LAKES WHERE YOU THOUGHT THAT WAS THE END !!!
Ok...here goes..."There we were...wind was blowin' a gale..." That's all I got for now...work in progress. HMM
Well sir, there's a lot to comment about in this one. A few stories I could share.
I'll just say, we are of the same generation and share much of the same viewpoint on many things.
I enjoy your edited videos and also greatly enjoyed this video! Thanks for the insight and entertainment!
You're welcome Robert. If I run everything, I'd get canceled! More to come though...thanks my friend. HMM
Great story! I am a year older than you so I know the times you speak of! I enjoy all the history you post! Thank you!
You're welcome Andrew; thanks for your support. HMM
Love Civil War history ! A good topic for you guys would be the Navel operations on ocean and the River operations !
Civil War history is my favorite. I'd do more if I thought people would watch. I brought back a ton of video from Gettysburg last year and didn't air any of it outside of the Jenny Wade story. Thanks again, Ron...HMM
I truly enjoy history talk between two old captains. Some of that of which you speak does go on today, but I never saw it. Smelled it, but never saw it. It's different on the Lakes and the inland rivers. On the rivers even when I was cooking on a boat at the dry dock "hotel boat" for the crews that worked on the boats getting repaired, I'd get popped for a sample right now, "if there's something frying on the stove, let it burn." The men didn't get any privacy whatsoever. They did allow me some privacy, but I had to use the common crew head, and it was disgusting. They wouldn't let me use the one in my own quarters. They tested for a bunch of different substances. Nobody was allowed to go ashore to drink alcohol on the rivers. You were on that boat for the full 14, 20, or 30 day hitch. On the Lakes, as long as you weren't on watch and the ship wasn't leaving you could go up the street and drink your fill. Just don't bring it aboard and do be on the ship before she sails.
Interesting commentary. Again...thanks for sharing it here. In all my days on the tugs...as a deckhand or Captain, I was never once drug tested. The crews regularly went ashore to drink their fill...then stagger back...and away we'd go...amazing. HMM
Cpn Darrel's story about scoring in WI is hilarious...if you're reading this Darrell, I know exactly what you mean when wild scenarios like that man overboard drill and of course it's gotta happen the exact hour you're out getting pie-eyed😅 ... Murphy's law i guess
Pie-eyed and bushy-tailed...Capt. D rocks! Thanks for watching! HMM
Central Michigan native here.
Went to the UP this weekend and had the privilege of catching the Arthur M. Anderson passing through the straits while it was headed to Duluth.
We wonder if there are any surviving familiy members from the crew of the fitz-the Anderson itself is still going. If those walls could talk. I have respect for the ship and all of you who have sailed 👍🏻🙏🏼💪🏼
Man I've been wanting to travel to the UP for the longest time. Trying to figure in a trip yet this season. There are definitely some surviving family members from the Fitz. Some will talk, some won't so we have to respect that. Here's an interview with a family member of the Fitz...th-cam.com/video/5mheawZpB48/w-d-xo.html

You’re totally right about loud concerts fellas. And AC/DC was blistering loud at the Palace of Auburn Hills
Would have loved to have been there for that one...ears still ringing I'm sure...thanks. "Whole lotta Rosie..." HMM

Thanks again Pamela. You don't have to wait long...fresh one out today! HMM

Awesome video and music your all talking about. Artamus Pyle is the last one
Skynyrd rocks! Thanks again, Bob...HMM
Love all the content on your channel. Your interviews with captain darrel I feel can pull the audience so much closer to the Fitzgerald rather than a book or basic documentary. I’m from Grand Rapids mi and I drive into North Adams and go by the library almost once a week hauling feed to the Amish farms out there for my job. I always look in The parking lot hoping you two are going to be standing out there so I can shake both your hands. Thanks for all you do and for keeping this great history alive.
Thanks Michael...super nice compliments...so rewarding. If you drive by, we'll be disappointed if you don't stop! Been to Grand Rapids many times...on the way to Berlin Raceway in Marne. Thanks for your support! HMM
I would like to give a shout out to the young lady who recognized the memory of the late Bruce Hudson and his work on the Mighty Fitz with her artwork. Sounds like her work was very respectful. Just check out some of the art work of Ken Marshall that he created on the Titanic. He never left it alone and it's truly amazing!
Thanks Todd. She created the art for one of her college classes...and got an A on the project. The dude on Facebook was brutal toward her...not cool at all. HMM
Oh yes I always watch the whole video. Captain Darrell is well knowledgeable. Much respect for the both of you. May God bless us all.
Thanks Rob...we appreciate your feedback. HMM
I love you when you guys talk on the Fitzgerald and I met one of Crew members great niece and she told me about him when her great uncle when he was sailing on the ship

an instant classic from Captain Darrell, thanks for sharing! As to your point on history, I agree with you, the stories need to be told. As the age old saying goes, those that don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
No truer words on history. Thanks for your feedback! HMM
Always informative and entertaining with more than a few good chuckles in this episode. I could only nod in agreement throughout but particularly so at your attitudes toward air travel. I’ve vowed to never set foot on a commercial flight again - and I’m a former airline captain!
Wow! That's amazing to hear this from a Captain. I can't say I won't ever fly again, but I much prefer to drive; it's just more fun! And the whole airport experience is such a pain-in-the-ass turnoff. Thanks for your feedback, Captain! HMM
There is a saying g that goes "those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." We need to learn from the past, and in order to do that we can't leave it alone. Keep telling your stories gentlemen. The world needs to learn from you

Darrell, that must have been the old C. Reiss Coal Company in Sheboygan. It's now a resort on the peninsula. Sheboygan hasn't been a ship port in the 21 st century.
Thanks Chuck. My tug career nearly ended one cold winter's night in Sheboygan, before it ever began. Got patched up on the local hospital, went home and thought it was over.
Can you share the link to that artwork the young lady did of Bruce Hudson? And you gotta remember ya can't fix stupid comments. Keep up telling the history.

We need history kept alive, especially history that the common American isn't familiar with, such as that of the Great Lakes. And we need it the more so now, when there is a blatant effort by some to destroy it at every opportunity. Keep the home fires lit; some of us greatly appreciate what you do and how you do it.
Thanks...so appreciated. So many schools don't teach history anymore, so we'll do it. We appreciate your support...HMM

HMM and Captain Darrell Thanks for the History and Stories! We were young Sailors at Great Lakes going to school and on our way home for the weekend (home was Ohio and 6 hours from the base) anyway we had just arrived in Fort Wayne when the plane wreck about Lynyrd Skynyrd was announced on the radio.
