Nintendo was also struggling for a time during the Wii U era, but they actually learned from their mistakes and did everything they needed to make sure they were successful, and now Nintendo is incredibly successful with the Switch. Microsoft could’ve had something similar if they actually knew what they were doing instead of having these unrealistic expectations for every game and studio they had. This whole ordeal pretty much killed any interest I had in potentially getting an Xbox Series, and maybe even any future Xbox consoles if they’re even gonna still be in the console market. I wouldn’t blame any of the devs of Microsoft and other sh*tty AAA companies if they start going on strike, because these companies have shown that they find these devs disposable instead of essential

Hi-Fi Rush is such a unique game yet cause it didn't make all the money in the world the studio has to shut down. It's really hard to have any faith in these companies if they're going to just shut down studios for literally any reason.
Hi Fi Rush was up there with Pizza Tower as one of my favourite games of last year, hell it might be one of my favourite games period. Tango didn’t deserve this. But I hope everyone there knows they made a masterpiece with one of the most lovable casts in any game.
The thing I’m worried about the most is that if Xbox pulls out the console wars next gen, I feel like that’d be terrible for the industry as it’ll create a massive monopoly for Sony since they’ll have no direct competitor. I don’t really view Sony/Nintendo as “competitors” since their target audience are pretty different and according to a survey conducted by Sony, half of their PS5 owners also own a Nintendo Switch (granted this survey is pretty old so idk if it’s still accurate) so the two systems sorta just coexist. If Xbox goes away, what’s stopping Sony to say, overcharge ps plus or overcharge their consoles with lower quality games? I could go on and on but even if Xbox is absolutely terrible, I do kinda think that it has to be there or at the very least have a replacement competitor (SEGA anyone?)
the video game industry in the west is a massive mess right now, so many factors to consider like games having huge budgets, insane crunch time, the rise of AI and how companies will favor that over real artists, and so many others I'm forgetting, and they all pile up resulting in all these layoffs, idk how long they can go on before the straw breaks the camel's back. And as you showed even if a game is a success it's not good enough to make back the costs as we saw with Insomniac. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a crash or a strike for video game developers sooner or later.
Buyouts can provide job security...if both the the buyer and the bought company are both in japan. As we've seen the last couple of years, Japanese labor laws have done an extremely large amount of heavy lifting to protect Japanese workers. From the government pressure to raise wages, to the sheer absence of major layoffs or studio closures. The only one that comes to mind is Luminous with Square Enix, but even in that case, the staff was just shuffled back into Square Enix's other departments, so no one lost their work. Sadly, these laws couldn't protect Tango though. Given that Microsoft is stationed in America, thus meaning it follows American business law, and can do this with little repercussion. And by another technicality, it also doesn't protect people outside of japan if the company has western branches. This is why it is that despite SEGA being stationed in japan, SEGA of Europe has still laid off several people and sold off studios. The only job security that is for sure is if, for example, the merger occurs in japan, to another Japanese company.
When Game Pass was being sold as "gaming Netflix", who could have expected that would turn out to be extremely accurate for entirely different reasons than intended? Shutting down Tango despite the popular and critical success of their game is literally the same exact thing Netflix does, they cancel very popular and well liked shows for seemingly no reason. The similarity is uncanny.
I just feel so bad for Shinji Mikami. The dude has a history of getting publicly fucked over by his employers. Capcom stabbed him in the back announcing Resident Evil 4 on PS2 (the earliest case of a pro-consumer, but anti-employee move that I remember) behind his back before the GameCube version could EVEN BREATHE (which by extension alienated Nintendo as well). And now Xbox, who Mikami initially aimed to have RE4 before they demonstrated their incompetence with Japanese developers, shuts down his company. Granted this time, he left before that (did he see the writing on the wall?), but still, Tango Gameworks was his baby.
There's one video I saw making the rounds on Twitter of Sarah Bond completely dodging the question of why Microsoft would feel the need to shut down the likes of Tango Gameworks. Do you think it might be possible that she knew the actual answer and what the problem was but chose not to say it out of fear of losing her job, or at least receiving disapproval from Phil Spencer?
I think it may be applied to Phil Spencer too. He might know why Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks were shut down, but he doesn't speak in order to avoid his superiors at Microsoft (the bigger chiefs) being angry at him.
What the hell is up with these big companies buying smaller ones then shutting them down? At this point I'm seriously thinking it's just sick kicks for the executives.
It's just how public trading companies work. They MUST always grow and MUST always assume they are going to grow as much as possible, their projections are always extremely optimistic, because if they were realistic that would be bearish on the market. It's like a big euphoric delusion about the line always going up, so every investment is made based on the most optimistic projections possible, but when inevitably, the projections overshoot the reality, and you now need to cut costs. The really funny part is that cutting costs is actually bullish for the market, because, you guessed it, it makes the line immediately go up faster. They "sell" investments like big purchases as growth, and then "sell" cutting off those investments later, also as growth. If they don't grow the company, that's death.
Honestly I feel like if not for Sea of Thieves Rare would’ve been the first to die YEARS ago alongside Lionhead. I hate that those four studios died for stupid reasons. Here we have Arkane Austin who has made fantastic games, but thanks to Redfall a game no one wanted to make and stated that they’re not good at making those type of games but the higher ups at Zenimax force them to make an online like game. People say it’s fine that they’re gone which hurts to see and then Tango who has made four hits back to back and no where near the budget of other Bethesda games all critically acclaimed and they still get shut down. I do think Game Pass while yes it is definitely a awesome thing for customers that plays video games I can’t help but see this hurting Microsoft (more specifically the devs under them) cause not only did MS paid a buttload of money to get Bethesda and especially Activision Blizzard, but they had to pay the lawyers due to the FTC and oh let’s not forget they’re paying all these third parties just to have them bring their brand new games like Persona, Like A Dragon, Nier, Resident Evil etc to come over which I think we can all agree that’s not cheap. When Game Pass was first introduced I always said that they shouldn’t bring their new games to that service because it’s going to bite them in the ass eventually and they should just stick to their old legacy titles like Nintendo with NSO just WAY BETTER. Nope they’re doing it like it is and now we’re seeing the aftermath. The majority (yes I know not all) that have Game Pass are saying why buy a game on Xbox and/or PC when we can just play them for “free”.
It blows my mind how Microsoft's been in the industry for 20 years and they STILL don't know what they're doing. At this point, I feel like the only reason why the 360 was successful was because the PS3 wasn't (at launch) and there were literally no other alternative platforms at the time. After this whole thing, it's clear they just got lucky with the 360 and didn't learn what makes a console successful from it.
New information came out today with Matt Booty telling that the close of Tango Gameworks was about problem with leadership (Basically going against Shinji Mikami and how it was difficult to find someone to replace him apparently)
(Crazy how Nintendo has been in the business for 47 years and not a single other console manufacturer is even close to that number of years, and if this keeps up, xbox would never reach this number. lol)
Remember that Nintendo is a Japanese company and Microsoft is American. Business politics in both countries are different, almost like America and Japan are two separate countries, crazy, right?
The way I see it, it’s no longer a race to the top because Nintendo won that race. It’s now a race to the bottom between PlayStation and Xbox. And, Xbox is winning this sad race by shooting themself in the foot harder than PlayStation.
PlayStation aren’t making that much progress either, the PS5 doesn’t have many exclusives and won’t get any until next year (even when Sony says it’s halfway through its lifespan!).
The thought of Microsoft going full third party has me super conflicted. On one hand, they have proven time and time again that they do not know how to nurture talent and that their solution to every problem is to buy out the competition. Xbox is also a sinking ship and MS may consider cutting their losses at this point (again). On the other hand, Sony having a monopoly on the AAA console market would be bad for the industry and Nintendo isn’t competing with them directly since their audiences are pretty different
Xbox/Microsoft shutting down the studio that made one of their most well-received games in recent memory is definitely a huge L. I doubt there’ll be any way to walk back from such a major PR disaster, especially when they’ve already bought out so many studios and people are already afraid which ones they’ll shutter next. At this point I doubt they’ll even make another console after the Series X since they didn’t just shoot themselves in the foot, but in the whole damn leg.
Xbox is a sinking ship that’s basically impossible to save at this point, they’re literally going to become Sega and leave the console market, them saying Microsoft Gaming proves to me that they don’t care too much about the Xbox brand anymore
When Microsoft said their focus was on "priority games" I can likely guess that it was to make more AAA games from established franchises. So basically those who weren't unemployed are basically gonna be support devs for the yearly Call of Duty. It's a sad trend in the industry that the focus is on hyper realism, live-service, and making games in established franchises rather than be willing to take risks. There was a report the other day that apparently Vicarious Visions wanted to make a Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 but was shot down by Activision in favor of helping make the next Call of Duty. It's not just Microsoft, other companies like Square are also scrapping smaller projects in favor of big games. Also, I still find it baffling that Xbox fans want Microsoft to buy Sega and all I'm thinking is, "So basically you want no more Persona, Megami Tensei Sonic, and Yakazu." Because I could bet the farm that Microsoft would scrap those games from happening because they don't sell 10 morbillion copies. Sorry if this sounds incoherent but the events this last week have made me want to rant about the state of the industry. All I have to say is is I'm glad Nintendo is actually making quality games and not following industry trends
I'm going to be honest. I have not been paying any attention to what Microsoft and Sony have been doing in the game industry. I mean some of you might want to call me a Nintendo fanboy all you want but hey when I grew up in the '90s I wasn't just playing SNES and N64. While they were my favorite consoles to play back then I still also played some Sega Genesis and PS1. I also played the original Xbox back when that was new. It wasn't until much more recently although I guess not really recent it was like 8 years ago when I got a PS2 slim. I thought the PS3 was a pretty great console and I had a lot of excitement for the PS4 when it first came out but ultimately never got one because my PC could play just about any game that the new PlayStation or Xbox consoles have so I just never saw a point to getting either of those consoles. I'm sure it would be easier than upgrading my PC to be a gaming computer since that's so damn expensive, but I haven't really found much reason to get any consoles other than Nintendo ones because Nintendo has all the exclusives I like. It could be because I grew up playing games like Mario and Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros and other ones as well, not to mention Sonic which is on All platforms granted yes is also available too so there's that. And even some of the more grown-up games are also available on switch but then again they're very extremely widely available on PC. So the point I'm trying to get at is I had no idea any of this was going on but now that I know about it I appreciate knowing about it and sometimes it's cool learning new things I just had no idea about. The thing that concerns me is I think it would be good if Microsoft just abandoned the console markup because it doesn't seem like they have any idea what they're doing if the Xbox brand. They've always lost to Sony. Yes at one point they were ahead of them with the 360 but eventually the PS3 overcame them. Of course the Wii had a comfortable lead above them both. But my concern is if it comes down to it the only competitors will be Nintendo and Sony. That could potentially be a bad thing. I mean it wasn't a bad thing when it was just Nintendo versus Sega but still I'm not sure how things would go If there wasn't a third platform that could kind of even things out. But then again when you really think about it Microsoft is not really evening things out at all. Maybe it could be a good thing though. Maybe it could lead to somebody new being in the console market but at the same time maybe it would be too little too late with how everybody plays games on their phones and with how many games are available on so many downloading clients on PC
Good thing I was never an XBOX player, so I doubt I'm missing much... The only thing Microsoft I'm really into are of course the computers and programs. I doubt Sony and Nintendo are far behind...
While Sega went out with the Dreamcast which is relatively beloved, when Xbox goes 3rd party which I’m convinced is happening I doubt anyone will buy anything from them that isn’t Halo related
It’s not even like they care about the consoles much anymore… they made the “most powerful console ever” just to hold it back by a console weaker than its direct competitor.
lets hear it from all the people that were like 'sony WHINING about so-called monopoly deal, everythings gonna be better for gaming when all those ip's gonna end up on game pass, a service that proves microsoft really cares'
Hi-Fi Rush was my 2023 GOTY. Played it on Game Pass and loved it so much that I bought it on Steam and PS5. Microsoft really dropped the ball big time, and the damage may be permanent. The end may be near for the Xbox brand and, unlike SEGA with the Dreamcast, they won’t go out with a bang.
The only way change will come if people speak with their wallets. But Let’s be honest - next week 90% of the people upset with this will forget and be upset about something else. No change will happen. We have a memory of a goldfish
Honestly? Now the majority of people are starting to agree with the shit that I was saying when Xbox One X was announced. Took long enough. There is a point where optimism equates to stupidity.
Hey, I just want to thank you for ghosting my ass for nearly a year. What the hell, man? I thought we were cool. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t want to be your friend anymore. A REAL friend wouldn’t ignore his other friends. Goodbye, and thanks for nothing.
theres much broader problem here, people versus marketing, people inability to see through basic layers of communication to dig the hard truths and stuff thats not at the forefront. the deal is done - i can assure you pulling this activision blizzard aquasition through was only thing that mattered and matters for microsoft, not some games or workplaces. and there definately was a shampagne toast raised in some small office and laughs when bobby kotick said - OK FINE i can resign but i want 250 mil for doing so. -ok bob we got the deal through! lets just close couple of studios and you have it in the bank!!!
to put into perspective, SEGA's last chairman Isao Okawa during their final console years, put 40 mil of his money to fund dreamcast, forgave huge debt sega owed him and gave his stocks away to sega when retiring. And then, Microsoft bought SEGA.
Thankyou for the upload. Xbox is dead. I'm not going forward with them in the future. I've supported xbox since the original. Now that I'm 37 and seeing all this I'm done. I'll keep my series x (big waste of money) and use the games I've bought. I won't be buying new games or anything . I'm sticking with retro gaming and maybe whatever Nintendo brings. But sny and Microsoft are dead t me.
With everyone but Nintendo using X86 they are just basically locked down crappy PCs, with the success of the Steam Deck I’d imagine Steam Machines may make a comeback, then MS wouldn’t have to worry about “system sellers” and could just focus on games and services.
Hi-Fi Rush: *does well*
Microsoft: *closes down the studio*

At least toys for bob is safe
It’s not even like they care about the consoles much anymore… they made the “most powerful console ever” just to hold it back by a console weaker than its direct competitor.
lets hear it from all the people that were like 'sony WHINING about so-called monopoly deal, everythings gonna be better for gaming when all those ip's gonna end up on game pass, a service that proves microsoft really cares'
I remember Marvel fans being excited that Disney was buying 20th Century Fox because “the X-Men will be in the MCU”. Yeah, but at what cost?
Hi-Fi Rush was my 2023 GOTY. Played it on Game Pass and loved it so much that I bought it on Steam and PS5.
Microsoft really dropped the ball big time, and the damage may be permanent. The end may be near for the Xbox brand and, unlike SEGA with the Dreamcast, they won’t go out with a bang.
I completely agree with you about all this, too. And to think I was going to give Xbox a chance! 😡
Nintendo and Valve are laughing at Xbox and PlayStation right now.
Sony isn't far behind Xbox BOTH console/companys are trash ! I don't even own there next gen systems LOL
Hi-Fi Rush was also shadow dropped. Yeah it’s a great game and it got amazing reviews, but I think the game just coming out hurt it in the long run
Game pass ruined everything!
But the writing was on the wall when they announced Xbox one.
After that worthless tech demo that is called Snoozeblade 2 it is indeed a total mess
Go woke, go broke as they say 😂
Interesting how the companies you accuse of being “broke” are the companies everyone knows about.
please shut up
@@liammcnicholas918and funny how are the ones losing money and damaging their reputation
Blah blah blah blah…. It’s fkn video games 🎮
