If eastern Europeans leave Britain after Brexit, what happens? | Anywhere but Westminster

  • John Harris visits the flatlands of East Anglia, where support for Brexit runs high, and where a huge number of people from central and Eastern Europe keep a vital part of the UK economy ticking over. From cheap vegetables to Amazon parcels, what goes on here affects all of us. But those who have settled here are increasingly worried about the immediate future, while businesses fear ‘falling off a precipice’

I can sympathise but the answer to the question the woman asked of "Who's going to work £5-6 per hour?" is no one. No one should be working below minimum wage, in fact, in most cases it's illegal.

Here is the other side of the story that very few Brits are aware of: There are Tesco's in Poland in Romania thats killing small local stores, the big banks from London's city transfer a lot of money around Eastern Europe every day and they make millions on currency speculations. So you see we as East Europeans have been used and taken advantage of as well.

As a Romanian immigrant, when I saw the business owner's speech, I understood why people voted for Brexit. Utter disdain for workers. He wants to treat people like cattle and he is glad eastern Europeans are more willing. His company would not survive in France, or Germany, with their labour laws. That's why I fear Brexit is not the solution. I fear that the Tories might be worse than the EU. Zero-hour contracts do not exist because of the EU. It's illegal in some other EU countries. In Germany you have to pay a fine if you are caught working more than 10 hours in a day.

@Anton Antonson We must have spent Billions protecting a few people from terrorism and failed, yet that same amount money could have saved countless more lives if it was spent on the sick and the aged but we choose not to. I'm not saying we should have spent anti terrorism money on the NHS , if saying if lives is what matters we should do both. Live expectancy in the UK has dropped 6 months under the Tories. The view of the problem is disproportionate. There will always be outliers in groups that want to kill people. It is a tiny problem in the great scheme of things. The vast majority of Muslims are not the problem but isolating them and attacking their right to be here is certainly making some isolated and angry and driving their motivations in the wrong direction so you are not contributing to a solution. You can quote the koran but the old testament is not much better yet christians are not seen as killers just ordinary people living a life. This video is about brexit and I think you will find the European migrants who are leaving anyway due to the poor pound will be replaced by Muslims and others. The businesses who fund the Tory party are not going to go without their cheap labour, plans are already being made to derive skilled and unskilled labour from Africa and Asia in order to compete. Its no accident that the only area of gov policy that has not published an impact document is immigration.

      1. I don't think you can make the connection between cheap labour and low supermarket prices without considering issues such as the enormous waste of food that occurs due to supermarkets' absurdly high standards of food appearance ("wonky carrots", etc), and the way the supermarkets drive down producer prices in the name of profit. I'd rather buy directly from the farmer but I know not everyone has this opportunity.
      2. Maybe we do need to face up to the fact that our food is too cheap. We're in a downward spiral of deflation, leading us into a low-value, low-productivity economy in which people earn low wages, subsidised by government hand-outs, and rely on cheap food to feed their families. All the while, the corporations get richer, with much of the profit going off-shore.

this is a Communist slogan. But people from eastern Europe know thing or two about what does it mean to be under Communism (anyone who is at least 35 can remember). For example, under Communism there are no rich and everyone are EQUALY poor, only the ones in power are "more equal" thant others, i.e. in essence you get same sh*t. The difference is that under capitalism system poor people at least have some chances to change their status when under Communism no matter how hard you try, because your wealth will be considered as a criminal thing, i.e. equality of income is the goal. And with time this kind of a system works like a demotivation, people become spoiled by the system - because it's a human nature to work in order to have more and not the same as the ones who are lazy.

They will be replaced not by Brits willing to work (as there were plenty of jobs for everybody willing to work but they have to get out of the house first to ask for one), but by immigrants from outside Europe, such as Indians, Chinese, Africans, Caribbean’s and so on.. the UK border is not closed to them and the truth is that there are more immigrants from outside the EU than from the EU but politicians have a different agenda and put in the table a different reason to cover their failing measures.
So you think Eastern Europeans were accepting low wages and for that reason you Brits couldn’t get out of the house to get a job than wait for the Middle East, Asia and Africa immigrants and you’ll see what low wage is.. they all survive on less than a euro a day, they know how to do it and still make saving. You know this is you travelled in these regions. Problem is that Brits won’t pay more ever when they can make more profit paying less and there is no control of even cheaper labour. Europeans are able to integrate in the society but the other ones, with a lot of respect, neither are able nor are willing to do so.
In conclusion, Brits get ready to teach how to wipe more asses as you did colonizing the world, as your colonies forgot already how to do it the moment you left theirs territories. Open your arms and be open minded as well to deal with it. UK is not anymore the “ombelico del mundo”

Crystal Method You do know that the whole point of being in business is to make a profit right and that the best way to earn profit is to cut costs.
If I were a business owner, the point if my business is ultimately to earn money for myself and to better my own standard of living and if it meant hiring migrant workers, using cheaper material or just outsourcing manufacturing to Vietnam, then I'll do just that.
If I weren't earning enough for myself or making a profit then I'll just close the business, let go of the workers and sell off the assets as remaining in business would be illogical.

When 95% of the worlds wealth is owned by 5% of the population, you have to ask whether this is an acceptable economic model. The stats clearly show it isn't, except for those who reap ridiculous profits off the back of everybody else in this country (not just immigrants).

    • @e0o9kii
      @e0o9kii 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

***** Yeah but again, if employing British and keeping manufacturing in Britain becomes too costly and non-profitable, then the business owner won't be making a profit, they'd be spending more than he/she is earning and it wouldn't make sense to stay in business anymore.
If I owned a business in the UK and if I realized that employing British workers and keeping manufacturing in the UK was too costly for me, I'll just close down the business, let go of the workers, sell off the assets, move to a more business friendly place like Hong Kong or South Korea where cheap migrant Filipino, Indonesian and Vietnamese workers are abundant.

Things will slightly change for people who try to come to the UK until they realize that those restrictions are nonsense and effect only british business and then again everybody will be allowed to come again. The point is that wages have been squeezed because (bless them) Eastern Europeans are willing to work for that little.
If big bosses can't get away with paying as little as possible and making people work all the hours that god sends then wages will go up; This is called Supply and Demand.
We should get our own people off welfare and into work instead of paying them to sit on their backsides.

And all the food factories and further processing factories won't be needed either. So they will be on the dole also. Hell we can just import everything that's needed into this country no jobs for everyone. Yeah!

The car insurance are outrageous, (A car that cost 200£ to insure in my country, in UK, the isurance companies charge me 1920£ ???). Renting a house+bils is around 1000£, the prices are getting higher, and sadly the weather is not to nice in this country, and for a lot of people the weather is a important factor.
The majority of emigrants come in UK to earn money, stay a few years (2-5) and after that, they go back.
In this case, is starting not to be so profitable to live in UK.
In my opinion, doesnt worth it to live in UK, anymore. Untill January me and my wife we will leave. Thanks for everything, but sadly this is not the country to live all my life.

Thats why we have a crisis of debt in Europe.

I knew that It is not "my life" so i remained "loyal" to my employers. I knew that the relatively tiny savings that i could do every mount after almost a decade can set me financially free in Eastern Europe.. So i did not care my life quality and how hard i have to work for how many hours a weak and how mutch i had to obey.. I think that on these sectors of the labor market of the UK there is a very sick competition.. That money that goes back to the UK is MUUCH more than you guys lose by having the remnants of the salaries going back to our homelands.

Now they dont work because immigrants accept the same jobs for lowered wages thus the citizens are at home unemployed and immigrants go BACK to their countries mostly..thus the welfare debt is CONSTANTLY GROWING!
Immigrants are not a solution..they are a placebo...the welfare state cant go on like this.

In 2004 Britain was opened up to much of Slavic Europe without the consent of the people ! Whatever individual views people have are on immigration, I don't accept that such a demographically changing action should have been allowed without the majority approval, tacit or formal, of the British people. The country has now been altered irrevocably.

I know also that the mentality is another one than an western european. The indians must change their mind a little bit (also the east european) and like this they can change their chiefs minds, because those ones are profiting from these hard workers peoples paying them so bad. I see the sellers and deposit workers, the most of them are foreigners with low incomes. For example at mcdonald's in Germany they give you 9-10 euro/h and they sell in a day for at least 5000 euro in 2 shifts. I worked also in a shitty bar on the highway for 8 hours and all income was around 600 euro/day and they have paid me with 10 euro/h. What the cardboard box manager in wisbech failed to mention is..When you hire agency staff and have to pay min wage. £7.30 then there is a mark up of up to 30% to the agency. hence he is paying £10ph for agency foreign labour. If he just employed brits for £9-10 then he would have hard working brit workers. who can work just as hard as there foreign eastern european counterparts. so start telling the truth. What this employer doesn't want to do is employ anybody permanent. pay maternity and sickness pay and using correct employment practices which he has to do if it was a brit. With a eastern european he can just say he doesn't need them the next day. Its immoral but that's the way the british elite work

    • @jeremijakrstic1968
      @jeremijakrstic1968 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Well, that guy explained it all. One day he might need 50 people, next, only 5. So what's the point of employing anybody for £9-£10? British economy operates on just-in-time principles, regardless whether it requires lean, agile or le-agile aproach towards running business. In any case, the most desirable factor for any employer is flexibility. Without it, you gonna see less rivalry within a market, which will inevitably translate into higher prices and lower salaries. If there's only a few companies of a particular type left after economic change, do you think they gonna lower their prices, when there's only a limited number of competitors present in their niche? Do you think they will fight for employees with higher salaries, when a lot of people will be looking for a job?
Let me tell you mate - no - it doesn't work this way.
You are just another example of a person who would like to have a cake and eat it too. Evan a kiddo knows that it's impossible to have it both ways.
It would be a lot more reasonable to start asking loud why taxation is so high, why housing market bubble is so big and why the hell inflation consumes wages and salaries so fast?

When it comes to stupidity, let's stay objective and follow elementary
science, especially so called 'normal distribution'. Number of 'stupid'
people in every European nation is more or less equal to the number of
those that might be considered as 'wise'.
I don't think that Great Britain is any different.
However, there's also another factor, factor that affects my personal judgement of Brexit-related affairs.
Somebody said that Europe is full of failed empires, most of which got over own
decline long time ago and transformed into entities seeking to obtain
the highest possible level of competitive advantage in some field/fields, utilising modern means, different than imperialism.
British Empire collapsed roughly around 75 years ago, which is not that distant point in British history.
      What does it mean?
It does mean that there's quite a lot people actually born in British
Empire, still alive, and most definitely that romantic memory of past
glory of British Empire is still alive in minds of the most part of
      British society.
So, being brief, it's entirely possible that
British society is still getting through the process of 'getting over'
      British Empire failure.
Hence, mentioned society experiences some problems in perceiving reality as it is.
'We will be better off without EU' - voters decided.
      Is that true?
I would consider it as more feasible, if I saw that Great Britain has a
detailed plan regarding how to conduct Brexit process, at the same time
describing future path of rebuilding own position, available for every
citizen and resident since few years ago, being specific, since
      pre-referendum times.
      Did that happen? No.
So, now it's just a 'lucky dip'. Post-Brexit Britain might work, but most likely
won't. At least in a short term. And it might take decades to only balance losses, not mentioning about development of self-made
      competitiveness.
One needs to play Lotto at least onece, to
realise that mentioned lucky dip isn't the best way to invest own
resources, while counting on becoming rich.
Are Britons ready to sacrifice their own standard of living and prove that they are better off without EU?
I don't think so. And that's the source of my biggest concern. Brexit itself is not as painful as the shock Britons will experience after it, especially if it's no-deal Brexit becomes a fact.
Wishful thinking, based on memories of British Empire, combined with disappointment caused by post-Brexit state of affairs and declining quality of life, can be really dangerous.
World doesn't revolve around UK anymore. That's the fact.
The other fact is EU won't be better off without UK. I hoped for British presence and strong stance regarding EU reform, needed so badly these days.
I guess it's not very likely now. Shame, shame we are now sentenced to German and French rule that will most likely lead other EU countries to nowhere.

Also, I have been told many times about that cycle of generations - first one is relatively poor, second one works hard, so the third can have fun. After times of fun mentioned cycle starts over.
Those are father examples of folk wisdom, however they seem to be matching with some of your conclusions.
Anyways, let's hope for the best, while being prepared for the worst.

I was born and raised in London and throughout my Careers I have met the loveliest, hardest working Europeans ever. Sorry, but we British, black, white or otherwise need to learn from these diligent people instead of complaining about them taking the jobs *we weren't prepared to take* before they arrived! We need to re-establish border taxes and protect our national economies. That way CHina products will be more costly thus Uk and French etc companies wont have to hire slaves but will be able to hire common citizens like they did once.

The majority of their employees (temporary agency workers) come from overseas. The agencies themselves are exploitative. Employer contractual/financial obligations towards the 'employees' are parasitic and evasive of responsibility. These so called 'businesses' are not viable.
