We are leaving by the hundreds/thousands.
There's a scheme in the National Health System in Spain and in order to get a contract they benefit nurses with experience in national health system of EU countries.
Many of us came to UK looking for experience that is also useful back home.
I have quit myself when brexit was approaching the march 31st deadline.
This scheme actually applies to any healthcare job, including doctors, X-ray operators and more.
What is sad is that many people don't even know that other countries have public free healthcare too and they accuse us of ripping rhe NHS off.
Hearing Charlie's story reminded me of this line from the UN rapporteur Philip Alston's report on UK poverty - "The bottom line is that much of the glue that has held British society together since the Second World War has been deliberately removed and replaced with a harsh and uncaring ethos."
And much like the title of the video, no one seems to care.

I am in tears hearing Charilie (c 6m 20s). I'm a stoic bloke and been around the block a few times. But sometimes it's not the extraordinary human fight for survival in a war or disaster zone that gets you. It's when the quiet desperation is experienced behind walls or normality and nobody pays much attention. I am more convinced than ever that it is not about the Governments we elect, but who we are, that elects the Government. Community, care, connectedness and compassion is only really experienced at a local level. We all need to rethink this.
Depressing as fuck, but thanks for keeping this series going as it's pretty eye opening. I'd imagine the Tories are going to use people's desperation against them again, but I honestly don't know how anyone can vote for them after the last ten years.

@@dtotti Neither is our first past the post system or the fact Boris Johnson became prime minister through a much less democratic process. The EU elects commisioners on a process similar to that of the speaker of the house, so we get a representative that has support from all sides, or in Bercows case, HAD support from all sides. Sure the EU system isn't perfect, but at least they have proportional representation, which is much better than we have. I have to vote for a party I largely dissagree because of how undemocratic first past the post is.
Nothing sums up modern Britain and the gig economy more than getting a text saying "no work tomorrow mate".

I haven't lived in the UK since the referendum and every time I get home it just gets...worse. I'm tired of hearing about it, i'm sad watching it decay and I just pray that people stop falling through the cracks.
This is a fantastic series that shines a light on those people, and I hope it continues. Fuck austerity, man. It's abysmal what people are forced to live through now.

Take a look at the U.S.: The leader of the 'greatest nation in the free world' lies at every opportunity and seeks to create division within society with his immigration myths (immigrants are criminals). The UK is now in a position that doesn't seem much better - the PM accused of lying to the Queen and potentially at risk of breaking the law if a No Deal Brexit is implemented on October 31st. Not enough people really seem to care about the climate crisis we are facing; growth and profit matter more than the destruction of natural resources. Etc, etc. All of this filters down to young people as is evidenced in this video.

@Just thoughts really - what I don't get is why he didn't go back on benefits after all those text messages, they've effectively sacked him or keep on at the agency for other work at a different employer. To let it lead to eviction with that amount of debt is silly, has he taken any advice from other professionals not just JCP/DWP?

2 observations watching this video:
1- Situation in the UK was a lot better in 2013 and 2015, on the surface at least. We had smaller problems then like ‘immigrants taking benefits they don’t deserve’, which is not entirely true but if it was, it was not the reason you can visibly see the situation is a lot worse in 2019.
2- Charlie broke my heart. A 40-hour job promised, but no work due to no orders. He wanted to be free from the rules of the EU, those rules that would actually protect him against his landlord for example.
See the pattern there?
What protection does the eu provide against landlords?
@@ArthurEmbleton Long term (actually life-long) rental contracts. Everyone is happy about them in so many European cities and the change towards something more simiallr to UK has been not received positively in places like Berlin for example. What the government did there to combat this is to buy a lot of properties to offer them in the market as a public option. The UK goverment will never do this ever because it "socialism" and the developers have our MPs by the balls. this is the difference.

Even though I have a feeling you will see this as being biased, the UK has the same tenant protections as countries who are really a lot worse economically, and it will get worse after brexshit.
This is something not to be proud of. If someone can't handle the "hardship" of being a landlord (even though they are a lot worse in the UK because the housing system is broken) then they shouldn't be landlords! I know you will now say "I need to guarantee my retirement, that's why I'm a landlord", again, its a problem with the UK broken social security system.

I spent most of my life in Northern cities - Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield - and it seems like we have come full circle and back to the start of the 80s. Life was miserable for ordinary people then ... in the report I see the same look in people's eyes.
I saw the writing on the wall many years ago and left the country (for much further than the EU) and have no intention of ever coming back. I watch news stories like this, and it just confirms to me how right I was.
I emigrated too but the UK is a great place as long as you have money. What is really frightening is that so many people in the UK are in Charlie's position because people who have to work for a living are seen as a cost rather than a person who deserves a dignified life by those who are rich and live of investment returns. What kind of people think a zero hours job is clever?

I can't imagine Basildon would be a particularly pleasant place but it is an election bellwether town that was massively in favour of Brexit (70%+ if I remember correctly).
In London there was an issue of people living in garden sheds and garages a few years ago, I can imagine that still exists.
Perhaps another step is to try and bring people together from various sides of arguments, living standards, political positions. Invite some of those who John has met to visit more prosperous areas, such as bring a manager of a food bank to Canary Wharf and develop some dialogue there.
Please can you come to Bolsover District. Labour stronghold with one of the highest Leave votes in the country. Young people voted the same way as their elders largely. And firebrand Skinner often defies party majority.

There is truth in no one caring anymore, Brexit conversations have been replaced by conversations about how much we despise our politicians or just pure disbelief in how they are acting. I hope the politicians stop what they are doing, before they do too much more permanent damage. I'm not sure many people will ever forgive the political class for standing up and giving speeches about democracy as they block a general election, nor will they be forgiven for voting to give the power to leave the EU to the EU.
These people believe they aristocracy, but they have no divine right nor heraldic bloodline, they lack the protections of an aristocracy, they just have our votes, but they may just have destroyed faith in such things. Aren't they lucky we aren't French.
I've commented elsewhere in this thread - but come to Northampton PLEASE. Everything wrong with education, healthcare, homelessness, decrepit buildings, bankrupt councils and more is present in Northampton. The people of the town have always felt ignored by the government, treated as insignificant and Brexit tensions only inflame that
When all this is over and people are able to look back at this period, this series will survive as serious journalism over all the shite that is being produced at the moment.

As an Irish person, everything seemed to have gone funny with the "Alternative Voting" Ref in 2011. Anyways, we really can't bear to imagine where you guys will be in 2021, or 2025 if you cannot shake off the hijacked Tories and Farage. You've made your own (and much of the ECJ's) laws from the begining.
Although, 2026 can look completely back to normal because on Jan 1st 2020 the Eu will implement new Anti Tax Avoidance laws, and being outside the ECJ by Halloween is understandable - for the real drivers in control.
I have better hope for America. They at least have a way back. England has its population's collective minds' doused in cognitive dissonance.

Suicide was at an all time high in 2018. Only 52% of those who die by suicide have a diagnosed mental health issues. It is NOT ONLY a mental illness caused travesty but very very often takes the lives of those who live in unbearably awful and difficult situations like this man. I hope he is OK.
please keep making these videos! Even this one, which may seem directionless, is important. We can sense the decline in the population's mood since the series started, the increased sense of frustration and resignation as our political system proves time and again to be dysfunctional.

Come to Northampton - our council went bankrupt, couldn't even afford to power street lights, boarded up factories and houses, tents of homeless people all over the streets, some of the worst performing schools in the country...
Its a microcosm of the deep rooted decay of English society slap bang in the middle of the country. Its a bellweather constituency as well.
How did Northampton vote in 2016 ref and 2019 EU elections?
This is the bleakest episode recall watching. I felt desperately sorry for that fella getting messed around with work; it's appalling that we are failing people like this.
I visited London a few months ago. The British people we spoke to were very friendly and welcoming. I didn't bring up politics. It'll be interesting to see how this situation pans out.

I’m sure someone would love to have Charlie as an employee, his house is immaculate, he is obviously a grafter and a lovely man.
John's features are brilliant. I was lucky enough to meet him and it really was a pleasure and he genuinely cared about what we had to say, with a good humour. It is tragic that we are at this point that he has to make them, but I salute you sir.
You're spot on that we might already be in the aftermath. I walk to work through Walsall town centre everyday and occasionally (or quite often, depending on how much I choose to look) it feels like a dystopian reality.
Thank you for these interviews. They're a real piece of journalism, and really capture the reality of so many people's lives. Thank you for listening to people who would otherwise remain voiceless.

I hate the fact that I'm an ex-pat and often miss the UK,but watching this heartbreaking docu is heartbreaking and things/situations unimaginable when I lived in the UK are now commonplace. Damn Thatcher and the never ending horde of greed filled locusts she put upon us.I'm just as appalled at the sheer ignorance of older people yearning for 'the good old days' that never really were. Hard to locate the hope in this picture of Britain. People really don't seem to care, and indeed actively foster contempt. In the name of what, I wonder. Identity maybe? I don't know. But I'm waiting for the day when some hope within our society generally - and not just for a handful of us - can return, and maybe bind us back together again. Even if only a little bit.

As always, the hope lies with the younger generation... but if things deteriorate so severely, there also lies a darker path of generational dissatisfaction in which hatred can fester. I believe that history will show the austerity policy was far more damaging then anything that Boris Johnson does.

This down to earth approach actually resumes UK situation, showing that people's despair and a genuine feeling of abandonment could lead to bad choices. Not long before we see a depressed John Harris in slippers, a stained vest and an open dressing gown just aimlessly walking around post industrial towns in the rain asking random people why everything is so shit.
Either way, as long as the UK breaks a part. It's a win win in my view.

PLEASE go back to these towns and talk to people now in 2023. It would be so interesting to find out what the Brexit sentiment is right now.
A sombre reflection of the nihilism that Brexit and all that preceded it has left us.
It begs the question. Was there ever a plan for a post Brexit Britain that would provide a surplus of funds for the infrastructure of our society? Schools, NHS, Police and our public services. The answer is no. The elderly guy on a zero hour contract whose been effectively fxxked by the governments sadistic welfare system is a dark harbinger of what’s to come if no deal comes through. Political failure is ultimately a failure of imagination. There was no vision of a vibrant new Britain with a revitalised manufacturing base, not one word. No deal will be proven to be the greatest con this country has experienced, when medical supplies run out and people are actually losing their lives that will be a sobering moment for those that swallowed the lie. There is nothing more sobering than human collateral.

The presenter tries to remain upbeat and optimistic for the viewers but it is when he is serious that his expression and silence speak volumes for the people he is interviewing , like that man who kept getting no work days and reached desperation that he was trying to suppress to remain optimistic himself.

I started following Anywhere but Westminster after hearing John Harris at the Left Field at Glastonbury. I find that the series has often illustrated the sense of desperation felt in this country but hasn't often omitted the causes. Admittedly, that might be the point in it being anywhere but Westminster. I've found Harris' criticism of Corbyn's Labour particularly bizarre (just because he wouldn't press his magical Stop Brexit button) given that they are the only party talking seriously about fixing many of the problems demonstrated outside of Westminster.
