Trails is sadly a tough recommendation since it's published through NISA (with most very difficult to find in North America at least). Tactics Ogre is one I want to get sometime soon actually! It's on my very long list of SRPGs I want to own eventually 😂
I don't know if it is available on physical discs, but "Planescape: Torment" is the best western RPG I have played till now. I've played it 3 times, first in 2002 (I think). It is like a vintage wine! You will never forget its taste! For example, I will never forget the character Annah of the Shadows (voiced by Sheena Easton) or the light hearted jokes of Morte (in a very gloomy universe!).
@@jean-pierrejoubert6140 These two RPG are almost the opposite when comes to characters. In Icewind Dale you create your party and name them. Hi, Emily! I recently discovered your channel and I really enjoy your videos. I absolutely love RPGs especially Fire Emblem Engage which I finished just a few weeks ago. great video and great list! a have a few of the games mentioned but theres a whole lot more i need to get, and some new ones on my radar thanks to this video :)
Great list. You also might want to check out the (I think very fun) genre of turn-based rogue-like RPGs, such as: - Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate - Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! - Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX - void tRrLM(); // (Void Terrarium) 1 & 2 - Omega Labyrinth Life (18+) These are ones I have physical versions of. Don't know how easy they are to get in America, but they shouldn't be too hard to find.
This is awesome. 1st video I ever watched where you talk about video games & there's a check list in the vid down below. I'm still playing Persona 5 Royale. The sword & the Fairy together forever, that went on sale at half price in the PSN. So now I paid $20 American to buy the game.
Great video! Like both of you, I try to get physical versions of most notable Switch RPGs but I do wonder still about the future. Since most physical games require downloads upon purchase, either as planned additional data or through patches, I have to wonder about these will still be available into the future or will those be discontinued when the Switch eshop ultimately closes someday?
This is a concern I have as well. The switch has the ability to download updates by matching with local users. So if a nearby switch contains those patches for a game you can download from there instead of relying on the eShop via internet wifi. But I guess this is also where the homebrew scene can step in down the line too. Especially once the flash carts inevitably fail as well. It's unfortunate that this is the state of the physical scene now.
Great video Emily and Brandon! As a recent Switch owner this was an awesome list that gave me several games to look forward to! Thank you both creating high-quality, informative videos. I'm checking out Branden's channel next! ✌
Already love this new series! So helpful! Especially useful that y’all note the availability and complete cart, I don’t see that listed in most list style videos and it saves me a lot of googling haha! Also one tiny note, not sure if it’s just be but the white symbol in the yellow box is almost impossible for me to make out either do to TH-cam compression or just the contrast being too low?
Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoy the concept of this series & the details we considered :) And yeah looking back maybe yellow was not the right color to go with, I may change it to grey for the next videos 😅
Stellar video! I’m sure there’s something in here that will finally break me out of the gaming rut 😂 I really like the criteria system you guys applied, super helpful! Though it really highlights how rare fully complete carts are these days 😭
There are a lot of great recommendations in this video and it is nice to see SMT V and Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi getting some attention. As for those complaining about SMT V, I wouldn't take them very seriously. The people complaining about the story don't seem to realize that the game is a direct sequel to the canon ending of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne and that SMT V goes with more of a horror narrative in tone with the situation of the protagonist being thrust into a situation involving a conflict between powerful forces that were previously unknown to him and fear of the unknown is a key part of making such a narrative work. So expecting this game to hand feed you lots of information like an RPG with a different narrative style would is an unreasonable expectation formed by people who don't understand what the game is trying to achieve. That would be like being disappointed that H.P. Lovecraft didn't write in the same style as J.R.R. Tolkien. Some additional games I would recommend are Ara Fell and Rise of the Third Power, which are indie RPGs in a JRPG style created by the same developer that got a physical release on the Switch this year through Limited Run. They are both well-written, have very fun combat, and have more content than most other indie RPGs with the games running about 30 hours for Ara Fell and 40 hours for Rise of the Third Power. As for Western RPGs, there are also some classic retro CRPGs that have Switch ports like Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate I & II, and Neverwinter Nights.
Some good points about SMT. Ara Fell & Rise of the Third Power are good recs too though we tried to avoid numbered LRG titles in this list because they're more difficult to get ahold of for MSRP.
Hehe, be sure to check out the video over on Branden's channel 😆 I lean more towards turn-based games as well, though I do love a good action RPG to spice things up from time to time :)
Dragon's dogma is one of the best RPG's ever made imo. Tons of replay value, great story, AMAZING gameplay. If it's on sale, buy it! You won't regret it
Watching these kinds of videos and playing the "Yep I have that" game. "Have Ryza, have TWEWY, don't have 13 Sentinels, have Valkyria Chronicles digitally, think I got Etrian Oddyssey digitally on 3DS, have the LRG Grandia, don't have Triangle Strategy, Sakuna's on PS4" Well rounded recommendations.
great picks from both of you. i do have some of these physically like monster hunter stories 2 , rune factory 4 special and dq 11. But i own most of them digitally.
I'm not sure if this would be counted as an RPG by some, but one game that was amazing for the Switch and really surprised me was Shadowverse: Champion's Battle on the Switch. I bought it on a whim because the price was very reasonable, and despite the fact that I had been so eagerly anticipating SMTV, when it came out, I had trouble putting down Shadowverse to play SMTV because the story was just so engrossing: it was like a Pokémon game if the game was challenging and had much more of a plot. I've never played a card-based game before, but the cards had so much character and the actual people in the world were so interesting that this was in my top games of 2021.
This was such a fun video to watch. I did get super sad about grandia hd- i have the asia copy and had no idea about the difference. This is so helpful all good games in on e video. Thank you!
I was sad when I learned about the cart differences between the Grandia HD editions too because I missed out on the LRG offering 😭 But glad to hear you enjoyed this format ☺️
Tokyo Mirage was the first switch game i actually finished. I played it on WiiU, but never finished it. So i had unfinished business when it came to the switch. lol
Yeah after Sega reprinted it it's a great action rpg option! I picked it up for the PS4 myself because I found it with that steelbook tin for cheap but I hear it runs pretty well on the switch too.
I believe one of the hardest RPGs to get now is FF Pixel Remaster. At least where I live, prices have completely skyrocketed. This month I've got also the Tactics Ogre Reborn, fearing that something similar would happen because I don't see it very often.
Aww Ryza 2 & 3 are so good!! They have noticeably more performance issues compared to the first game but if you can get past that they're wonderful games to own on the Switch :)
This is in my opion the top 5 rpgs 5 - Diablo 3 - By far the game I played the most on the Switch 4 - Dragon Quest 11 - Awesome RPG but I am not a fan of turn base games 3 - The Witcher 3 - One of the best rpgs ever but the Switch port is far from perfect 2 - Skyrim - No need to say a thing 1 Dark Souls - Not thr best in the trilogy imo but you cant deny its greatness Honorable mention to the Xenoblade games they are amazing but the combat just doesnt click completely with me, basic fights drag on for far too long.
Thanks again Emily for having me, this was a blast!
Thanks for joining me! The videos turned out great 😊

Thanks! Glad to hear you enjoy the concept of this series & the details we considered :)
And yeah looking back maybe yellow was not the right color to go with, I may change it to grey for the next videos 😅
Stellar video! I’m sure there’s something in here that will finally break me out of the gaming rut 😂
I really like the criteria system you guys applied, super helpful! Though it really highlights how rare fully complete carts are these days 😭
Thanks so much, Justin! And I hope you can conquer your gaming rut sometime soon!!
Emily doing a double video drop! 🥳🥳 I like traditional turned based RPG the most. Love Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest series, and the older FF series.
Hehe, be sure to check out the video over on Branden's channel 😆 I lean more towards turn-based games as well, though I do love a good action RPG to spice things up from time to time :)
Wow, great list. Just ordered Brigandine!
Good selection, good vids, cheers guys
Dragon's dogma is one of the best RPG's ever made imo. Tons of replay value, great story, AMAZING gameplay. If it's on sale, buy it! You won't regret it
Watching these kinds of videos and playing the "Yep I have that" game. "Have Ryza, have TWEWY, don't have 13 Sentinels, have Valkyria Chronicles digitally, think I got Etrian Oddyssey digitally on 3DS, have the LRG Grandia, don't have Triangle Strategy, Sakuna's on PS4"
Well rounded recommendations.
Thanks! We really tried to hit on as many subgenres and titles as possible :)
Great n awesome video Im just starting my Nintendo Switch Jrpgs collection haha😅
Best of luck with your switch JRPG collection! It's a ton of fun collecting for the system :)
Great list of recommendations! The Switch has so many great RPGs. I still need to pick up quite a few of these 😳
This was a really cool like of games, I just have to note that Dragon’s Dogma is by pure definition a jrpg, it’s made in Japan
great picks from both of you. i do have some of these physically like monster hunter stories 2 , rune factory 4 special and dq 11. But i own most of them digitally.
I'm playing Monster Hunter Stories 2 right now and I'm loving it a lot. Great monster collecting RPG for sure!
It's amazing
Just found your channel and love it!! ❤😊
So i had unfinished business when it came to the switch. lol
I love the xenoseries collection on the back
Love this new series! ❤ Sega needs to release a Phantasy Star 1-4 collection, similar to the Mana collection.
A Phantasy Star collection would be awesome! Sega make that happen~
Great recommendations. I would also like to nominate shining resonance refrain. Still pretty easy to get and good arpg
Great list !! I hope baldurs gate 3 will release on switch in the future.
Switch 2 maybe
I enjoy these videos. I’m trying to get into visual novels. Do you have any recommendations? Or maybe a video on them?
I can totally make a similar video for VNs :)
I'm a little worried about how many of these I already own...I think I don't have like...four of these.
Some great games here and a few i need to check out now. I still need to get to Ryza 2 and 3.
Aww Ryza 2 & 3 are so good!! They have noticeably more performance issues compared to the first game but if you can get past that they're wonderful games to own on the Switch :)
This is in my opion the top 5 rpgs
5 - Diablo 3 - By far the game I played the most on the Switch
4 - Dragon Quest 11 - Awesome RPG but I am not a fan of turn base games
3 - The Witcher 3 - One of the best rpgs ever but the Switch port is far from perfect
2 - Skyrim - No need to say a thing
1 Dark Souls - Not thr best in the trilogy imo but you cant deny its greatness
Honorable mention to the Xenoblade games they are amazing but the combat just doesnt click completely with me, basic fights drag on for far too long.
Rune Factory 3 on DS was godly. I hope I bother to fix my switch for rune factory 5 lol
