legend of heros series area great, especially the trails series. They have a such great world map, complete stories, very interesting plots and many replay values. It really builds up its own world and make you fall in love with the characters inside.
My top 3: Dragon Quest 11, Ys 8 Lacrimosa of Dana, and Octopath Traveler. Dare I say that DQ11 might be my favorite RPG of all time. Also Johnny, thank you for introducing me to the Ys series. I bought 8 on sale earlier this year and enjoyed every second of it! Thanks for promoting Ys so heavily over the years otherwise I never would have given it a chance.
I’m right there with you on DQ11 and commented the same on this video. I typically get bored about halfway through many JRPGs. Not with DQ11. That game was so entertaining, never spending too much time in each city and so much variation in every aspect.
Dragon quest 11 may not only be one of the best RPGs of all time, but one of the best games period. I've logged almost 150 hours already, damn does the game ever end? 😆 *Spoiler* I'm in the post game part, where that little black tockle transforms into that huge creature.
Was DQ11 your first Dragon Quest? Just asking. I've played it on PC, then again on switch and its my third or fourth favorite of the DQs. DQ5 > DQ8 > DQ9 with friends > DQ11. Without multiplayer, the swap DQ11 & DQ9. My is a masterpiece. It's also the series creators favorite too. You start as a baby, and it goes through your whole life. The DS version is one I played it adds another wife option, and more monsters you can recruit to party. There's a PS2 Japan exclusive version of DQ5 that's in 3d like 8 & 11. A fan translation is available if you emulate, or mod your PS. I plan to play that version soon
BD 2 is amazing and yes it was a quiet release. I love how you can pick any job you want and how well they all synergize with each other. Really like how some classes are "hidden" too. Such a fun game.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 is another great JRPG of a game! I feel the game makes your actions impactful in the combat! I enjoyed both collecting, hunting, and raising Monsters in the game. The story was great, characters were interesting and the game graphically looks beautiful!!

I stumbled upon the option to take her route naturally my first time by just playing the game; by talking to people at the castle once per month and raising supports.

I was worried when I first started BD2 because it seemed like a grind fest but then I learned you could speed up combat and automate some of the actions. Completely changed the experience for me and now I looooooove it.
Bravely Default 2 has one of the best soundtracks of the year, visuals are on point, and the combat system is choice. It’s a bit grindy but it’s basically just a classic FF game so idk what people expect. Definitely recommend!
Also I wanted to say I loved Grandia. Fell in love with the first one on PS1 and played the others on Dreamcast I believe, excellent game series! Another sort of JRPG that I would suggest is also Dragon Quest Builders 2. It's actually got a great story behind it and just isn't talked about enough. It might be passed off too easily as a sort of mincraft ripoff but its really charming and fun to play with lovable characters, and a superb building and fighting system behind it. I can just spend hours upon hours building crazy castles and farms and whatnot. Great game!
Have had a Switch for about 3 years now and have under utilized it to say the least. I grew up in the golden age of Squaresoft and Enix (before they merged). FFs, Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, Legend of Dragoon, Valkyrie Profile, etc. So I'm happy to see the classic RPGs make a return on a new-ish console. Thank you for highlighting these games and just for your overall positive attitude and excitement that you show for these games. Your channel is a pleasure to watch. Thank you for your hard work!
Bravely Default 2 had a very specific feel to it. It had classic final fantasy vibes while delivering some fun new battle strategies. Final Fantasy X-2 is how I got introduced into rpg's first got it on my PS2 when I was 16 and was hooked. Now I have the HD remastered bundle for my switch & I just got bravely default 2 for my birthday back in July. RPG's are my cozy games 🎮🙂
I’d say the biggest con against Octopath also turns itself into a pro. That is the lack of a big over-arching narrative. The individual character stories are nice but sometimes you go 15 hours before you see what happens next to the characters you like. However, it does make it so you can put it down for a long period of time and jump back in without feeling lost, because you always can look at the map and see where you can go to tackle a chapter. And it will recap what happened to the character before the current chapter. Which is nice for these 60+ hour rpgs
I just finished Dragon Quest 11 the other day and my time with the game was just as varied as the story itself. The light hearted start of the game had me thinking that it just wasn’t going to be that exciting. But as the story progressed and a few of the twists happened, along with the big twist at the end of the first act, I was hooked. I was a little bored with Slyvando’s quest. But everything else was exciting and had my very excited for what’s coming. It was the first DQ that I finished. Now I just wish they would port over DQ8.
I highly recommend Labyrinth of Refrain. It has a story that will surprise you, a satisfying turn based battle system, and the best post-game content I've ever played. The game plays like Etrian Odyssey in that it's a first person dungeon crawler, but it has a greater focus on story. The characters start out a bit grating, but they really grow and gain nuance the more you play.
I can confirmo refrain is a hidden gem. If you play the game and like it, NIS released anither gane in the series called labyrinth of galleria. Its only on PS4 at the moment but I have hope it will make it to the switch someday.
Happened to me: 1st game I tried on Switch is Octopath Traveller, during game completion always using a headset so I realized that the music score is tremendously amazing. Continue playing other game such as Bravely Default 2, it was a very good game. However given the music score impression in Octopath Traveller made me set the music score standard at high bar. Anyhow I liked how unique each RPG in Switch.
Bravely Default 2 was my intro to the series and I had a blast, completing it 100%. I'm now going through the original game on my 3DS and enjoying it a lot as well. Being an RPG fan is tough because the games are so long, and there's always so many we want to play. For me I don't feel satisfied rushing through them either, I always have to take my time and do side quests and such which just add to the length. It's killing me not to have Tales of Arise right now as I'm a huge Tales fan. But my PC is getting old so I'd really like to play it on PS5, I still just can't find one.
I have to say Johnny in a world (and YT specifically) full of cynicism and "red" and "black" pill Right vs. Left, drama fueled garbage your channel is like a beacon. Seriously you are just so full of joy about most games (and video games in general) even ones you didn't really seem to like or think were great yet you still usually try to see things as half full and not go on tangents or rants. It really is refreshing to see and hear and thank you.
Being from the UK I was only ever used to seeing RPGs released for the most part on Nintendo's secondary handhelds and not their main system. Both the NES and SNES in Europe barely got any. So I have to say the Switch has been a revelation for RPGs both ports of older games and modern ones that have also been released other systems of the past generation. Both The World Ends with You and its sequel have been particular favourites as well as SMT 5. Loved the Xenoblade games too but already knew I would since I played the original on the Wii. Still have to get around to the Ys games though to this day I have never played one.
My favorite DQXI moment was when I was separated from Sylvio and was walking along doing some mission and looked to my right and saw Sylvio's ship anchored in the bay and thought "he's back?!" I then took one more step forward and he made his big re-entrance to the story. It was great having that little moment of discovery before the cutscene.
Just finished Xenoblade Chronicles DE last night. What a game! What a story! I do, however, like XC2 exponentially more. The combat, music, story are all top notch. Can’t wait to see what Monolithsoft has in store for the future of the Xenoblade universe.
@@derek-64 3-4 years back Monolith said that they won't make XCX port as it would cost them too much but maybe they do work on NEW installment. Fingers crossed!
For anyone wondering, the frame rate is Ys IX is hardly a problem. It only happens when there's a lot going on and like old schmups kind of helps for that second or two when things are really nuts. Finishing the whole game I never thought once about the game being bad due to the frame rate.
There is nothing that warms my heart more than hearing the music from secret Amana series breaks my heart. All these games you mentioned are so dear to my heart too. They are so important for everyone to experience the Mona Lisa's of our time
The original Bravely default is easily one of my favorite games of all time. Bravely Second was absolutely brilliant as well. I was so excited for Bravely Default 2, but to me it kind of just fell flat. The new characters were just okay, I didn't fall in love with them. The jobs weren't that exciting or fun for me explore, and the story was 7/10. Not bad! but not great either. Overall I'd consider it a just Okay game. Granted, it had absolutely massive shoes to fill. I'd sure love to see the original bravely default and bravely second get ported to switch.
Thanks for all your content man... I just started Xenobalde definitive edition and I love it so far. I'm a little bit upset not being able to find Xenoblade Chronicles 2 physical tho.
I can't believe you didn't mention Fire Emblem Three Houses! That's the best RPG on the system (along with Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest 11). Astral Chain is also a good action RPG you didn't mention.
With Fire Emblem turning more into a dating sim rather than a strategy RPG, I've just lost interest and feel the series is taking a turn I cannot follow anymore. Good or bad is subjective, but so is calling it "the best RPG on the system". It's just not for me. I'll be waiting for BotW 2 and hoping we get Pikmin 4.. and that maybe we'll get a real Pokemon game that's got actual effort put into it to earn that 60$ price tag.
@@Sairiui Anyone that says Fire Emblem is more of a dating sim clearly hasn't experienced much of it. There have only been 2 Fire Emblem games in the series that let you pair everyone up as a couple and have kids. The last 2 games haven't had that mechanic at all and the last game only lets you pick a partner for your own character. Which only gives a short 30 second or so cutscene. It's literally less than 0.00001 percent of the game.
@@Flareboxx Considering I've been playing Fire Emblem games since Sacred Stones and had more of a focus on gameplay and strategy over the dating sim, I can say, with enough experience, that the recent Fire Emblem titles have become more of a dating sim.

Great list of some top tier games, i own a fair amount of these titles but on PS4 & XBOX because the switch struggles & they always overcharge for a lesser version. I really wish Nintendo would release an upgraded piece of hardware so i could enjoy the games more, some great games in the list.

Never finished it. But about 20 years ago, I got to the very end of FF10 and never beat the final boss...I'm torn.
I recently picked up BD 2 and I am really enjoying it. The default system is a nice bit of strategy addition to your combat. I also really like the ability to slowdown and speed up your combat. It really makes the game flow at the pace you would like. The depth of the jobs system with the ability to have minor/sub jobs is a nice bit of depth. I’ve heard the game is to difficult with boss encounters, I haven’t felt that way. Ofcourse Im old school and grind a bit more than others probably do between boss encounters. My rating for BD 2 is 9 out of 10.
Something I would like to see is the Quintet SNES trilogy getting the Trials of Mana Remake treatment. Not very likely to happen at all though. I've recently been playing Soul Blazer again and it's still really fun.

I’d highly recommend DQ11S its a must have game on Switch.
100% agree! They pulled some serious wizardry to get it to look that good and play so well on the switch.
Loved the orchestra soundtrack too and I'll definitely do a second playthrough but in 2D mode and playing the Japanese import next time. The 2D quests in Tickington were such a cool addition and I'm so glad I didn't buy the original PS4 version without them and with the MIDI soundtrack.
Totally. I'll do a 2D only playthrough in a year or two.
Just recently got into this game. Really shows how poorly made Pokémon Scarlett and Violet are.
@@danielschmidtke9213 I felt the same way, this game brings everything fun about scarlet and violet and makes it polished
Ni no kuni got me into rpg's! Great story and looks like a studio ghibli movie
Same here ❤
FYI Grandia I and Ii is now available on Play Asia for a physical copy. Great video John. Love the Switch for all the RPGs.
Thanks for this info! I was bummed to miss the LRG copy and it's stupid expensive now!
@@IrieIslandGaming feel ya buddy. Especially since it's my favorite game.
Ugh, I just bought the LRG copy a couple week ago for 120 euros(140 dollars). I had to get it since it's one of my favorites but I could have gotten it for so much cheaper..
@@Deadono same thing happened to me. A week after I shell out the cash they announced it.
Lilly the skull... that is all.
legend of heros series area great, especially the trails series.
I agree completely, DQ11 is such an awesome game 👍🏻
Dragon quest 11 may not only be one of the best RPGs of all time, but one of the best games period. I've logged almost 150 hours already, damn does the game ever end? 😆
*Spoiler* I'm in the post game part, where that little black tockle transforms into that huge creature.
Also DQ12 was announced, and its getting simultaneous World Wide Release! First time ever in DQ history!
BD 2 is amazing and yes it was a quiet release. I love how you can pick any job you want and how well they all synergize with each other. Really like how some classes are "hidden" too. Such a fun game.
Your channel deserves more views and subscribers. I love your energy!!
I love Grandia on ps1 , I managed to get the switch version and im "slowly" playing through it remembering how great it is.
Monster Hunter Stories 2 is another great JRPG of a game! I feel the game makes your actions impactful in the combat! I enjoyed both collecting, hunting, and raising Monsters in the game. The story was great, characters were interesting and the game graphically looks beautiful!!
It's so addicting for me in looking for rare monstie eggs, I'm loving the game so far!
The only problems I have is the storyline feels weak and navirou is annoying, other than that ,this game is awesome.
@@optimoblunt2894 I hate Navirou so much
I passed on it after I played the demo. It just felt like too much of a carbon copy of stories 1.

@@thegreatape884 Not three houses. I literally stayed up til 4 am every night playing it. Its my first FE game so maybe thats why i love it.
@@thegreatape884 That sounds like bad luck to me, I never had any issues going edelgard route and never needed a guide.

@@DJdebbin7 yea it took me a while to get used to the mechanics but I really learned to enjoy it. First one is easier for sure!
Yes! A great video about rpg's. My favorite genre. My two cents: I wish they would port Dragon Quest 8 and Tales of Abyss to the Switch.
Dragon Quest 8 on Switch? Just hook it into my vein.
Would adore Tales of the Abyss on Switch! Hopefully Bandai Namco will remaster Abyss and Graces f for Switch and other consoles some day.
@@axogreen876 Hopefully the good sales of Tales of Arise will change Bandai Namco's mind, like the Trials of Mana remake sales did with Square Enix.
I strongly suggest Dragon's Dogma, Star Ocean First Departure R, Tales of Vesperia, and Persona 5 Strikers for the action rpg fans.
Strongly agree with Dragons Dogma. Arguably the best RPG ported to the switch.
Great list of RPGs! Final Fantasy VIII will always have special place for me. I somehow like the though bubbles of Squall are shown and how he fights against himself.. and had his own fears and pain.. and how each team member adds something different to the party..
octopath traveler was such a nice journey. never stop playing the soundtrack
Seymours boss theme in FFX is absolutely brilliant, when I played Ff15 I just listened to the FFX soundtrack in game, what a joy
I watched this video when it first came out and remember hearing a bunch of games I haven’t heard of or considered buying. 11 months later and I own every game on this list except 3. Thanks a lot!!!!!
Ikenfell gets incredibly overlooked even though it's an amazing cute game. The combat can be brutal but youncan make it as easy as you like.
Yes, sadly he don't seem give a damn about indie game like Bug Fables and Ikenfell. But it's his list. 😁
SMT V will soon be added to that awesome list!
Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade Chronicles (1&2) are fantastic ones. Ys VIII and IX are some of my favorites, but I played both of those on PS4
I really gotta play the Ys games, they look awesome. Though I might start with the really old school PC Engine ones.
@@homerthompson416 I would highly recommend them👍🏻 I haven't played the old ones either though, I gotta find some way to play them
it's gotta be Moon: Remix RPG Adventure for me. Loved playing the original imported game on a modded PS1 a decade or so ago, so seeing it not only release on Switch but get a full English Translation to boot? Truly a miracle!
I never played a dragon quest until Johnny hyped up DQ11. I love it!!!!!
i only played the first one on original NES hardware a couple years ago. was def fun!
@@PeterParker-vq2cz Second one is really cool too if you liked the first. Though if you can the Super Famicom version is better since it still has all the backgrounds in battle instead of being a black screen.
I don't play much of these types of games truthfully, but his enthusiasm and excitement about the games hooked me to watch the video to the end.
Thank you again the amazing content!!! Yesterday I saw Collection of Mana for $20 CAD and didn’t pick it up. I saw your video then had to go back to Walmart today, still there, bought it. Looking forward to play these, never played before. Thanks a lot, I would’ve missed out!
I was worried when I first started BD2 because it seemed like a grind fest but then I learned you could speed up combat and automate some of the actions. Completely changed the experience for me and now I looooooove it.
Just bought Collection of Mana yesterday and really enjoying it.
Are all the games in it from the super Nintendo era?
I think you should’ve shown or mentioned the Ghibli scenes in Ni No Kuni, that was a big selling point for soooooo many people
You got me into JRPGs mate. Thank you from your number 1 UK fan
Bravely Default 2 had a very specific feel to it. It had classic final fantasy vibes while delivering some fun new battle strategies. I am really enjoying the detailed environments and variety of strategies to combine the bast jobs to defeat each boss. By the way I just picked up the mana collection. Thanks for the suggestion I look forward to playing it. Cheers

- Dragon Quest XI
- Final Fantasy VII / VIII
- Final Fantasy IX
- Final Fantasy X/X2
- Final Fantasy XII : The Zodiac Age

- Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore
- Tales of Vesperia : Definitive Edition
- Ni no Kuni
- Grandia I/II HD Remaster

- Romancing Saga 3
I finally got brave default 2 on black Friday sale, its feels like old school confort RPG food, a slow burner with a deep mystery, great and varied environments with lots of little details and beautiful lighting and interesting assortment of whimsical enimies something that I felt missed the mark with Scarlett nexus (enemy designs) I have never played the first bravely default game though.
Final Fantasy X-2 is how I got introduced into rpg's first got it on my PS2 when I was 16 and was hooked. Now I have the HD remastered bundle for my switch & I just got bravely default 2 for my birthday back in July. RPG's are my cozy games 🎮🙂
For me, the bests RPGs ever made was:
- Chrono Cross
- FF IX
- Grandia
- Dragon Quest 11
- Ni No Kuni 2
Oh man dragon quest was AWESOME 😎
Chrono cross over Chrono trigger? What drugs are you on?
I’d say the biggest con against Octopath also turns itself into a pro. That is the lack of a big over-arching narrative. The individual character stories are nice but sometimes you go 15 hours before you see what happens next to the characters you like. However, it does make it so you can put it down for a long period of time and jump back in without feeling lost, because you always can look at the map and see where you can go to tackle a chapter. And it will recap what happened to the character before the current chapter. Which is nice for these 60+ hour rpgs
I love Bravely Default and Bravely Second and I also really love Octopath Traver.
But OMG Bravely Default 2 is even better, a SOLID JRPG.
Favorites for me would be Death End Re Quest, Dragon Star Varnir, The Mary Skelter series, Tales of Vesperia, etc. There's so many that I love.
Now I just wish they would port over DQ8.
thank you for having quick link segments to click through and not just one giant video.
I’ve been really interested in checking that game out, thanks for letting me know it is worth it. I’m a huge etrian fan, so it’s up my ally for sure
I can confirmo refrain is a hidden gem. If you play the game and like it, NIS released anither gane in the series called labyrinth of galleria. Its only on PS4 at the moment but I have hope it will make it to the switch someday.
@@somerandomguy4281 Unfortunately they still haven't confirmed a release outside of Japan. A Switch version is releasing in Japan, though.
The Ys games on the Switch are incredible and Ys IX is my game of the year. They put so much heart into those games
Great list! I would add Fire Emblem Three Houses and the Pokémon games too! Even the South Park games. The Switch is a gold mine!
Kingdoms of Amalur Re Reckoning (although I guess it’s an action RPG). One of my favourites and so underrated.
I just bought this and currently 25 hours in. Its fantastic.
@@nicholasnajibi3082 Dont need to spend much time here to see how these drama fueled channels are everywhere now.
NEO: The World Ends With You is a fantastic RPG that just came out on the Switch (and PS4) that I highly recommend.
Ni No Kuni II Revenant Kingdom came to switch back in August, and I’ve been binging that! So so good!
Mine was Henrick saving the people and enjoying his quest the second chapter.
I loved I am Setsuna and Trails of Cold Steel 3! Thanks HappyCG I love the heart you put into your videos!!
I loved bravely default 2, it had great mechanics interesting classes and overall an interesting story.
I grew up on Dragon Quest, also owning Dragon Warrior in 89 and playing the ever living crap out of it. 11 was so good.
Just finished Xenoblade Chronicles DE last night. What a game! What a story! I do, however, like XC2 exponentially more. The combat, music, story are all top notch. Can’t wait to see what Monolithsoft has in store for the future of the Xenoblade universe.
Finally someone who has the same, yet highely rare, opinion on XC: DE vs XC2!
A Switch port of Xenoblade Chronicles X would be nice or perhaps a sequel maybe?
@@derek-64 3-4 years back Monolith said that they won't make XCX port as it would cost them too much but maybe they do work on NEW installment. Fingers crossed!

Chile of Light is often ignored in these kinds of lists, but it’s a very good RPG with incredible combat and beautiful visual/music.

I really must know why Capcom has refused to make a Breath of Fire collection. I suspect someone in the company has become allergic to money.
Bug Fable is a really good paper Mario/mario rpg spiritual successor. Also playing Eastward atm. Really really good game.
I loved DQ 11, Cosmic Star Heroine and Tales of Vesperia, probably in that order - great system for JRPGs. Its no Vita, but a worthy replacement.
I’ve played (or have) most of these games. Final Fantasy X and X-2, love love love! Great video! Subbed.
I absolutely loved Ys Origin and Ys 8, and Dragon Quest XI I think was my favorite RPG of all time so far.

😂 ur a doomph skoomph

It is tempting on Switch. Being handheld will be great and I do like jumping back into X now and then.

@@Ookami20 I hate X-2 so much lol. Loved the tone and atory of X, so having the complete opposite in the sequel felt awful. Felt like a spit in the face. Shame cause the gameplay is actually decent but can't get past the rest. Not a fan of the soundtrack or focus on gimmicks/sidequests either.
Great list of some top tier games, i own a fair amount of these titles but on PS4 & XBOX because the switch struggles & they always overcharge for a lesser version. I really wish Nintendo would release an upgraded piece of hardware so i could enjoy the games more, some great games in the list.
FF12 is the greatest Final Fantasy to me. I've played that game to completion multiple times on the ps2, ps4, and now the Switch.

@@michaelvandongen7629 it’s just ok. It’s not amazing on there but if that is your only way to play the game it is well worth it. There’s nothing like it on the switch.

Never finished it. But about 20 years ago, I got to the very end of FF10 and never beat the final boss...I'm torn.
Ys IX is already updated on Switch so the framerate is not much of an issues. It still there when so much particles but its far more stable now.
Did it really? I might check it out again.
