It's a lovely car to drive my G31 520d M Sport but there are some small annoying things that you would take it for granted in a premium car. It's not easy to turn on the fog lights while driving (the steering wheel covers the switch), operating the back windows from the driver seat will make you hit the pillar with elbow, don't have a place to rest the right foot next to the pedal while the car is on cruise control on the motorway (other cheaper cars have that) and other few small things.
Australian police just switched to these a few years ago but the 530d with the 3.0L diesel. They previously used locally built Holden Commodore (GM) and Ford Falcon police cars each with either V8's or Turbo V6. These are great because they use half the fuel, which makes up for the more expensive price.

I drove 5-6k miles in an F10 and did similar mileage in a G30, both 520d models. You echoed my words by saying that the G30 was slightly better in ever aspect. Both were superb and despite the comparative lack of power on paper, they were great in the real world. The 6 Series GT was another BMW that impressed me a lot more than I expected it would.
Owned 2 BMWs so far, and they’ve never once let me down. You’re right, If you look after them you can’t go wrong. Been starting to think about my next one and I think this video just convinced me it’s a 5 series. However I think the 530d is the sweet spot on one of these.
530d definitely. I’ve had a 520d and 530d back to back and averaged 43 and 40mpg respectively over 3 years of ownership with each. For the extra oomph the 3 litre gives you its a no brainer.👍

Great review, which couldn’t be more spot on. I have the 2018 xdrive M sport model in selenite grey. Looks absolutely great and drives fantastic. I opted for the smaller 18 inch alloy wheels, allows for a bit more cushioning for the pot holes on the Uk roads. Would highly recommend this car!
Bought my g30 530d Xdrive before watching your review. Even if most people will buy the 520d, I recommend the 3l engine for this car. It’s simply amazing, making it the ultimate driving machine for real (in the diesel world).
Very informative. As someone of limited means, I've always been scared-off BMWs as being high-maintenance, this car seems perfect; I would like a quicker 0-60 time, but I suspect in reality it wouldn't be an issue.
BMWs aren’t high maintenance, unless you’re buying the Sports cars. The diesels are the ones to buy. You get good performance and they have robust engines
My Alpine white with cognac interior g30 520d hit 90k miles a few weeks back. No issues whatsoever, 0 interior wear… recently recalled for a egr cooler, that’s done. Love the car

I've had the newer W213 E220d since 2016, and I agree, the newer engine is quiet, 194bhp and excellent economy. When I bought it I test drove the E Class, the XF and the 520d back to back, and haven't regretted my choice, 60,000 miles and still smiling
@@philcrockford5534 The W/S213 is a stunning car. My dad has had one for about 6 months and it's just gorgeous. In fairness to the BMW though, the engine is just a bit quieter than the 220d (not by much, but when you start revving it out) and it did feel a bit lighter on it's feet than the E class. Aftermarket support also seems to be better on the BMWs, lots of retrofits available - less so on the Mercs. All in all, both excellent cars. My heart says XF, but i just can't bring myself to commit when both the BMW and Merc are much better cars.
@@timprice5 I loved driving the XF ( felt it handled better than the BMW at the time) but back then there were loads of reports of touchscreen problems with the updated Meridian system. l recently rented a 5 series 4 cylinder gas version in Las Vegas. No car should be without gesture controls. Also, wireless Apple carplay is a must have for i phone users. Excellent review as always. In the states, run flat tires are standard - which are noisy.
Here in Finland lots of 2 liter diesel four-bangers nowadays, thanks to expensive fuel prices. I had a new one recently. Twelve times I had it back to the dealer for repairs under warranty. The dealer was fine, no problem there. I sold it before the thirteenth thing occurred. I was very disappointed. It also had some incessant rattling in the rear, that no one could find. Perhaps this was a Covid model. I purchased an XE and all I can say is WOW!!!
Another great vid. I've been wanting an estate version for years, always loved them. I looked at one recently and was astonished at the physical size. I don't know if I've been going around with my eyes half open in the past but I may have to consider a 3 series because I actually found it quite intimidating. Or I might be getting old.
Not at all Neil, i do find the 5 series and the E class intimidating in size. I have an old B6 Passat estate and the difference is measurable. I got scared when lifting up an E class on axle stands - that's never happened before!
Having just bought my first ever BMW, a 530e, I can say they feel bigger to be in and drive than to look at. They're deceptively large. I am now petrified of car parks.
I'll be brutally honest with you, none of them drive nearly as well as the E39, except the E60 which was a bit of an uggo. That super crisp, precise steering in the E39 is all but gone in the F10 and G30 models, anyone who tells you otherwise is kidding themselves. The improvements to subsequent models of 5 can be summed up in one word: tech.
Having driven the E34, E39, F10 and the G30, the E39 feels the best to drive. All other felt great too, especially the F10 with hydraulic steering but still didn’t feel as nimble as the E39, it’s just the perfect balance. Too bad they rust so much, curious on the E60 but I think they look the worst of the bunch.
Wow! Seen a couple of POV drives of these. Amazed out how quiet the engine is. It takes about 0.5 to start, it's almost electric like! For me, as a real enthusiast, all these super refined modern cars are a bit boring. I like the noise and feeling the road, it's what gives a car character. Guess that's the way it's going though! We have had Passat DSGs which have a similar, super-refined engine and ride so I'm sort of used to it. This is a step up though. Fantastic everyday transport but hope we don't lose genuinely exciting and interesting cars! Like you said, you need this and something for the weekend. 🙂
@@matthewsmith2787 it's not the road noise really. For me cars are losing their soul. All the stuff that made them interesting is being taken away. That is an awesome car but it's just a mode of transport. I prefer a purer driving experience with the sound of an engine, a manual gearbox and a feeling of speed. That doesn't mean they have to be noisy. 🙂
I've had 5's (E60 & G31) and 3 series touring's (2 x F31), and love them all, for different reasons. Definitely both great all round cars with very few faults. The G31 isn't as sharp on the back roads as the F31's were, but it's always a pleasure (and effortless) to drive. Our '19 520d did nearly 700 miles (high 50's mpg) on a tank one holiday, 5 up with luggage and I wasn't trying to eak out the best MPG.
Had one of the older models and loved it but only had it two weeks as mine was in the paint/refurbishment shop, after an idiot lobbed a flower pot off a balcony 8 floors up and made a right mess of mine and others parked close to me. That was a New Year party that went wrong and the culprit - you guess it a Nerd on the Social. Would I have one - dammed right I would but I'd have to park on the road as it would not fit in my parking space, alongside SUV's and smaller cars. Cheers Matt - Looks nice.
I've got a BMW 520d E60 bought new in 2009, almost 12 years ago. Never had any issues with it and still going strong. I'm interested in knowing more about one of your comments regarding premium fuel. I've always asked myself if I should use it or if it wasn't necessary. In all these years I've always used standard diesel... Cheers.
I don't currently drive a BMW, but I do drive a diesel Jaguar, and like you I have always used regular diesel. Anyway recently I filled up with premium Shell diesel which was almost 10p per litre more expensive, ouch, but it was either this or risk running out! Almost immediately I noticed a difference in performance, and acceleration, and something else that has changed is the engine runs more quietly, which has got to be a bonus! I am guessing that the fuel is more refined and hence has fewer impurities in it. From now on I shall regularly fill up with Shell or some other premium brand to help ward off the usual problems that we diesel drivers are worried about! Incidentally I am considering buying a BMW 520d or possibly a 530d. The old Jaguar is lovely but rather 20th century and becoming tired!
My dad has just bought an 68 plate S213 E220d - we looked at both that and the 5 series G31. The G31 was indeed an excellent car. I think the 520d felt a bit 'quicker' than the E220d, and less cumbersome on the road. Mind you, it's a 5 metre long estate car so driving dynamics are definitely a bonus rather than a need. The advantage of the E Class is the equipment 'packs'. Some of the things that come standard on the 'Premium/Premium Plus' packages in the UK are very rare options on the 5 series. Memory seats, Panoramic roof, Park assist, Reversing camera - all standard on the E Class - we found barely any with some/all of these options in the 5 series. I also think on the used market, the E Class becomes much better value around 2 years old than the beemer. They are chucking out top spec E220d with 10k miles for £24-28k depending on spec, which frankly is a steal for the car you're getting.
@@lyletregoning4717 I had a drive in a RR Sport a while ago and i was shocked how old fashioned it looked inside (i know that isn't the point of them!). The 5 series will be a different planet!

Driving it - so nice, comfy, all the power you need on a day 2 day basis. Best 5 series ever. The only one I would pick over this is the 530e or 545e 😍

Seriously thinking of getting a MK2 m535. Love them!

I agree with you. The one irritant is the size of the door pockets. perfect for child sized hands. Other than that 10/10 and a joy to drive.
Another great review I don’t do bmws but I appreciate your point of view
Picking mine up tomorrow 😊
I drove 5-6k miles in an F10 and did similar mileage in a G30, both 520d models. You echoed my words by saying that the G30 was slightly better in ever aspect. Both were superb and despite the comparative lack of power on paper, they were great in the real world. The 6 Series GT was another BMW that impressed me a lot more than I expected it would.
I agree
Picked up my g30 530e about two weeks ago. Best car I've owned! Enough power and comfort for UK roads.
Good choice
Interested to hear your experience of it 8 months on?
Owned 2 BMWs so far, and they’ve never once let me down. You’re right, If you look after them you can’t go wrong. Been starting to think about my next one and I think this video just convinced me it’s a 5 series. However I think the 530d is the sweet spot on one of these.
The 630d GT is the way to go!! If you like that weird aesthetics of course 😁
Had a 530d GT on loan once and it felt like an absolute tank. Do love the look of 6 series GT though, and you can pick some up at a good price now.
530d definitely. I’ve had a 520d and 530d back to back and averaged 43 and 40mpg respectively over 3 years of ownership with each. For the extra oomph the 3 litre gives you its a no brainer.👍
Can’t speak for the 5 series, but the 3 series I drove was very unreliable
@@matthewsmith2787 I have a 5 series, not a cheap car to maintain and like you I have found the reliability disappointing, my wallet agrees 😑
Great video of a great car. I’ve recently bought a new 530e PHEV and driven with care I’m getting over 100mpg I haven’t bought petrol since middle of March despite a few long trips.
I had a G31 520d Touring for 3 years and averaged 49.8 mpg over 33k miles. Loved it, pretty much all the car anyone needs.
I agree
I have always bought Mercedes but must say this car looks beautiful.
Bought my g30 530d Xdrive before watching your review. Even if most people will buy the 520d, I recommend the 3l engine for this car. It’s simply amazing, making it the ultimate driving machine for real (in the diesel world).
Has it been reliable?
Very informative. As someone of limited means, I've always been scared-off BMWs as being high-maintenance, this car seems perfect; I would like a quicker 0-60 time, but I suspect in reality it wouldn't be an issue.
BMWs aren’t high maintenance, unless you’re buying the Sports cars. The diesels are the ones to buy. You get good performance and they have robust engines
The facelifted one of this is a gem.
Great video...I just purchased a brand new touring..mild hybrid diesel...👍
My Alpine white with cognac interior g30 520d hit 90k miles a few weeks back. No issues whatsoever, 0 interior wear… recently recalled for a egr cooler, that’s done. Love the car
Can’t think of a better all rounder ever. Comfy, amazing to drive, plenty of performance even with the 520d. Looks classy or loud if you get the m performance kit
Honest reviews like this are what really helped me put a deposit down on my 520D M Sport XDrive. Collecting mine on Saturday and can not wait!
And ? Still happy ?
@@Carlos-Rodrigues Extremely! The only thing that's bugged me the last 10 months is the number of times my vehicle has had a manufacture vehicle. I suppose these things happen and my local BMW dealer are really good at sorting this thing out painlessly.
Still happy?
@sacapuntas137 happy to say still no real issues! Now thinking of upgrading as the mileage is almost reached 75k. But regular servicing should keep this going for few more years easily.
The one I’ve been waiting for! Having had the e60 and f10 5 series I’d recommend them to anyone (particularly the 6cylinder petrols). They’re the 911 of executive cars, slightly better each time.
Are they reliable as well?
Bought my first BMW this year. It's a 2019 G31 520d xdrive with the M-sport package. I absolutely love it and it's well worth the wait and all those years of saving up for it.
Despite you said you might not post this on ig I’m sure glad you did, much love from Barbados
Thanks for watching from beautiful Barbados
Just did. 2019 G31 Touring version, 35000 km, highly practical family car. Not M package though, but lots of eqipment. Did 2500 km, so far no complaints.
One of the last good looking BMWs on the road now.
I saw a x3 the other day, it looked hideous and almost laughable the grill is almost the size of the bonnet
I have the 2018 540i…… It’s without doubt the best car I’ve ever owned, truly awesome car.
I think you meant an old E Class diesel. Would be nice to see a review of a new E Class. Keep up the good work
I've had the newer W213 E220d since 2016, and I agree, the newer engine is quiet, 194bhp and excellent economy.
They've probably sorted it now. Ended up finding an ex-MB dealership managers AMG Line in silver, with 3000 miles, black Nappa, panoramic, Burmeister stereo upgrade, turned dash trim and rear climate control. Yeah I'd love to try a XF next time but this will keep me happy for a while yet!
@@philcrockford5534 that's a great spec. Ours is an S213 on a 68 plate AMG Line Premium (not plus) with pan roof . No nappa, multibeam or burmester but not priorities for my dad.
Couldn't argue at around £25k just over a year old with 11k miles though.
Straight to the point, I like it. I just watched 2 of your videos (f19-g30) and I already subscribed
Il like the exterior of the F10 but the interior of the G30 is just perfection

Thank you so much for the review mate. I was really close to go get a decent F10 with around 12-13k ish. But now you got me thinking.. why not throw another 2-3k and get the G30. Everything looks much better especially in the interior.
Is it worth getting a G30 with 60-70k for about 15k ish ? Cheers
Thanks. This always the trouble when looking for cars. You can keep adding a couple of grand until eventually you're way over budget. If you can comfortably afford a G30 then I would definitely recommend. If not the F10 is a very good option
Did you manage to find the F10 for 15k ish?
@@MrUnknown2105 even better, last April I found an 5 Series G30 2017 with 72k on the clock for 14.5k. Now it’s worth 17-18k lol

I had a 530e for half a year. The car was dynamically compromised with the worst of both petrol and EV. But comfort and build quality were excellent! And the drive was very, very good!
All what you say is true. But you don’t need a car to go 140, if I won the premium bonds I’d be tempted. However I’d pick a mondeo, odd I know but all you need is there. Just think of who you could help with the difference?
Had 2 still got the f10 34000 miles on it love the car great car can't wait to get a good run out in it.
The reason I drive BMW is you never have any bother shifting them on when your done with them there always a buyer
Exactly correct. I went and bought a Mazda CX-5 , and now I wish I was just patient enough to get a 5 series instead.
Do a video on an X6 please. Had Two 5 series, and a 4 series recently, but went to an X6 30d M-Sport A Edition. What a machine the X6 is, i loved my 5’s but the jump up in quality on the X6 is tremendous. Keep up the good work👍
My only moan is the lack of rear folding seats unless spec’d! :(
I have E39 and I wanted to take something longer and find out that I cant fold my seats :D:D:D
Great review and I agree having had the f10 m5 for many years and now moved to the f90 m5 comp , if you wanted I’m happy for you to do a review of it , it’s been tuned aswell so full exhaust, downpipes and a remap so running around 800 bhp

You tempted to consider a BMW for the first time for almost a decade. I’d get the Touring, though and with the X-Drive, they must be pretty expensive, still.
There’s also the M550d xDrive which has 400 horsepower, but isn’t available in the UK.
It's been discontinued since the LCI.
The M50d X5 has also been discontinued since September 2020.
l recently rented a 5 series 4 cylinder gas version in Las Vegas. No car should be without gesture controls. Also, wireless Apple carplay is a must have for i phone users. Excellent review as always. In the states, run flat tires are standard - which are noisy.
Great point
Here in Finland lots of 2 liter diesel four-bangers nowadays, thanks to expensive fuel prices. Yeah I’d love one of these but right now my heart is pumping towards stupid looking JDM cars, well that’ll be over in a few weeks and then I’ll be wanting something else again lol.
5:07 ”Richard, do be careful parking the car in front of the manor house. Yes, park it next to the Mercedes, so it looks better! My Sheridan would be appalled if you’d park it next to that awful old car! Mind the horses dear! Sound the horn!!”
JDM cars actually outlast any German cars. Especially Toyota and Honda. Bulletproof cars.
I used to own an E39 and I loved it - if every subsequent generation is a step forward then maybe I need another five in my life
I'll be brutally honest with you, none of them drive nearly as well as the E39, except the E60 which was a bit of an uggo.
You'll find yourself tailgating people and flashing them 🤣
Bmw guys going crazy with likes 😂
I like quiet cars , nothing worse than loud road noise
@@matthewsmith2787 it's not the road noise really. For me cars are losing their soul. All the stuff that made them interesting is being taken away. That is an awesome car but it's just a mode of transport. I prefer a purer driving experience with the sound of an engine, a manual gearbox and a feeling of speed. That doesn't mean they have to be noisy. 🙂
I'd be intrigued to see you review a 3 series GT given they are about the same size due to the longer wheelbase and look pretty similar inside.
E39 still the best 5 series of all time for me
Had one of the older models and loved it but only had it two weeks as mine was in the paint/refurbishment shop, after an idiot lobbed a flower pot off a balcony 8 floors up and made a right mess of mine and others parked close to me.
Thank you very much for providing your experience! I think I will soon try the premium Diesel too.
I have a 530d g30 RWD 2017 with 19.000 miles on it, best car I have ever had.
Can you do an update on the Bentley Continental please?
Cup holders?! You never mentioned the cup holders, surely that could be a downside?!?! 🤔😂🤣
I’m just considering buying a G31 (touring) So pleased my favourite car reviewer has just done a video
Cheers!
Do it, it's a stunning car. Also consider the E Class S213 - less fun to drive but a great alternative and good value used.
