    I remember a few years back. It was a lovely summer's morning. Sun was shining, birds were chirping and there was a man in a BMW 435i convertible. I looked at him and he glanced on forward and I just thought to myself, this guy knows exactly what he's about. I had instant respect for him as he sat there in his Melbourne Red Metallic 4 series convertible with the roof down on a lovely morning. It was a stunning car.

    I've had a 430i coupe for 3 years and it never fails to put a smile on my face when I drive it. It's the perfect balance between practicality and comfort while still being sporty. The back seats can carry 2 adults under 6' and the boot's a good size. The biggest improvement I made was to swap the tyres from run flats; instant reduction in road noise, got rid of the harsh ride and that's without the adaptive dampers so I would imagine with those fitted it would be an even bigger improvement. The interior whilst not the most exciting to look at is extremely well built with great ergonomics and not a single squeak or rattle. The red leather isn't as garish to look at in real life as it looks on camera. I also looked at the C Class couple which although looks more upmarket on the inside doesn't actually feel that classy once you start touching and prodding the materials. I had a remap put on mine so it's pushing close to 300hp now which has made a difference to not only performance but also economy, I'm averaging 40.5mpg. It really has been a pleasure to own the car and I'd highly recommend test driving one if you are in the market for a car like this.

    • @gw7624
      @gw7624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What type of driving are you doing to get that fuel economy? I averaged 27mpg in my 325i with most of that on the motorway.

    • @thelastemperor3704
      @thelastemperor3704 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@gw7624 mixed driving, probably 60% motorway. I was getting around 36 before I remapped it but saw a decent improvement afterwards. Obviously this is driving with a light right foot and only gunning it when I really need to. If I thrash it all the time I can soon see it drop to low 30s. I think the B48 is an under rated engine because its only a 4 pot, it might not have the sound we all love with the B58 but with the way fuel prices are these days I'm glad I didn't get the 440i as I think with the remap giving near 300hp its more than adequate for roads.

Fantastic was and understatement I used to “borrow” it and would slide the arse out on many a big roundabout. Such fun. I think the 6 cylinder petrol is a great engine and to all those who say it uses too much fuel, they really need to enjoy life more and inject some fun in to their sad life. The 2018 435d X drive M Sport coupe I had was a slight improvement but I never understood why BMW failed so spectacularly to give us a car that could hold a straight line. Almost bought another the other day as I do miss the sheer power of these cars but can only afford 6 year fairly old high mile cars now so probably not the most sensible move.

    No lights, and flying past doing 60 in a 30 zone, with a Focus ST glued to its derriere.
    This is when we all need 007 Cannons in the front bumper. Was it you Matt?

    I really wanted a 4gc two years ago, however they were another £4/5k extra than the F10 5 series…so I got my F10.
    Coming up for third year on and nothing is wrong with it. Bought at 69k miles and now on 111k.
    Been serviced on time (or early) and run on standard shell as well as vpower.
    It’s the same engine as what is in this 4 series, 190hp so it’s quick enough and I’ve had up to 69mpg on a long run with shell vpower, average around 63 mpg on normal motorway conditions and around 40-50 mixed.

    I had a 2016 420d m sport gran coupe and loved it. Very practical, great on the motorway and a really good looking car. Another child meant I swapped it for g31 530d which is also great. If I was getting another I may opt for the 440i as they go and sound great. Good vid!

    While these look nicer they are heavier than a regular 3? Id imagine less spacious too. Id take the extra stiffness with the framed windows and a 340 touring thanks. And 3:45 so true 🤣 my radio presets have had the minor coffee accident.

    • @SJ-pb6jx
      @SJ-pb6jx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The window frames add nothing to the stiffness of the car, they are a convenient way to park the raised windows. BMW, Porsche, etc drop the windows a few mm for clearance when the door handle is lifted. The cabin is virtually identical to the 3 Series but rear head room may be slightly less in the 4GC than in a 3Touring. I think the 4 has higher-spec as standard iDrive, dials, etc than the equivalent 3, which explains the cost difference. Looks-wise it’s no contest and the only exterior panel common to both 4 and 3 Series is the bonnet. I did look at quite a few 335d Tourings but prefer the looks and spec of the 435d.

    Another grweat vlog. The only thing I have found which you did not mention is the high noise levels. Having driven a few 4 series whilst my 5 series were in for service I found there were very high levels of noise from all sources especially road noise, whether petrol or diesel variants. To me, the 4 series feels like it has NO sound deadening materials at all, otherwise a stylish car.

    Unless your paintwork is flawless and/or you're wealthy enough to pay somebody else to wash (even polish) it twice a week black is a poor choice of colour on a car I think. On a real car - a everyday working vehicle with imperfect paint that doesn't have constant attention lavished on it - black paint very soon looks bloody awful frankly. Nothing else shows dirt, damage or paint imperfections more obviously. Many a motorist has discovered to their cost that the 'Mafia staff car' look they fell for in the showroom is mistake in the long term. If you doubt this then try cleaning a black car on a hot summer's day and realize just how much fun that is.
    Also, in a world where choice is almost unlimited why do today's new car buyers consider that variations on Battleship Grey (otherwise known as 'Crabfat') is for some reason a desirable colour on a their car?

    I had the first gen audi sportback s line from new...drove it for 6 years. Lovely car but made a mistake and should of got it in auto! Such a heavy car to drive... few cars laters i now drive this 4 series gc 420d m sport plus version.. agile.. and rides so much smoother than any car i have owned... which is odd for 19 inch wheels! Still scratching my head, wondering how bmw did it!? 😂

    Great timing on the review from a personal perspective, as a grand coupe 420d or 430d is currently top of my list for next car, maybe early next year Matt. 18 months ago I'd get a 19reg 420d for about 26k in UK, now the same age I'm looking at 30k to get a really nice one with sub 10k milage, as I want digital dials and m sport plus pack, larger wheels etc. Bit of a promotion gift to myself 🤣 do you see the market settling anytime soon Matt? Or just continuing the way it is? Merry Christmas BTW 👌

    It looks great ! You don't see too many of them here in Central Europe, as the cost / income ratio would make the locals' eyes water. Although oddly, just up the street here in Prague, a BMW dealership moved into new premises and has all the shiny expensive machines spot lit at night. The showroom looks fantastic. Their old showroom next door is now branded Rolls Royce. with their shiny machines behind glass. Which looks a bit odd as it's overlooked by Communist era panel built high rise housing.

    Looks awfully similar to a BMW328i Coupe about 20 years ago. Two doors similar back seat - I think it was a’96 model. Lovely car, even he this neat quirk withe windows opening & shuttering with the doors. It was red, but didn’t have horrible red seats. The doors were hutge and heavy- very awkward to open in tight spaces. I was surprised at the size, I previously had a 520i which actually seemed smaller. I was living in Australia at the time and they thought anything BMW was the best!

    Having just reluctantly got rid of an E92 3 series with a rod bearing fault after forking out £2k for a new exhaust system, there is no way I'd run another BMW without a decent warranty. You _really_ don't want to run these cars second hand without one.

    I have been going of this era of cars with turbo’s and so much cheap plastic under the bonnet which just builds in shelf like to the extent it can’t be repaired. In the current crop of German engineered super cars, M and RS models even if it’s front engined to get to anything you need to take the front bumper off. Then calibrate everything when it goes back. It’s like mid engined cars where it’s engine out for everything. I am looking at v8 v10 v12 Na with proper engineering integrity.
