My life has changed in the last 6 years. I think it's because I subconsciously took on stoic philosophies. I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2014. I knew some huge life-changing illness like multiple sclerosis was going to have a massive impact on my goals I decided to change my outlook and and focus on the things that mattered. So I stopped going out drinking with my friends and partying wasting time. I spent the years following up to my diagnosis wasting time. Multiple sclerosis made me focus on what matters in life. Try to get closer to that every day by comparing to yourself yesterday 2. the view from above Zoom out in third person view from your person - to your house - the street - the city - the Earth - and so on… Put your problems in the perspective of the whole world Throughout the day, view yourself as a character in a video game - alienate yourself from environmental influences 3. physical exercise Exercise for the benefit of your mind 4. meditation Control your urge to itch and let it disappear by itself Apply it to situations to control your reactions 5. review the day Sit down and think about what happened during the day Congratulate yourself for everything you did well Identify the problems you don’t want to have again See whether you are on track to your goals 6. journaling See th-cam.com/video/qpwWi2MTTuc/w-d-xo.html
@@QuickMadeUpName Nope. Not at all. Wisdom is gained through years as 'X Marks' mentioned. You can be 85 years old and through life's experiences, wisdom will be thrust open you. Whether you are self-aware or not to apply it is another question. Usually if you make it to 40 or 60 or 80, you understand the world a little better and why you have been able to live this long despite the trials and tribulations. Enlightenment can come at 15 years old or 40 or 90 or any age. It also doesn't stay. It comes and goes. No real human being can maintain an enlightened state, otherwise your name would be the great Buddha.
All the just gesticulation is very distracting and gets in the way of clear communication. If you "feel like you can control yourself" better, please start with stopping with the crazy and erratic hand gestures.
The video is well put together, and information is concise as well as clearly communicated throughout the whole video. I appreciate the organization and structure in which the speaker relays the experiment. It is high quality documentation that does not seem to be too prevalent in many TH-cam videos nowadays.
The future will always be unclear. You can only know what's certain at this point in time and that's why you have to start somewhere, right here right now

I haven't seen a school in our age that teaches something as useful as this. Ancient classical education was far more superior to raise strong individuals. And that's the point I guess. Our education system.doesnt want strong individuals. It wants servants and subservient citizens.
100%. My school constantly rammed it down our throats how lucky we are to go there. They based their success on how many students got into uni, there was literally no other option to go because anything else would have been seen as failure. I went to uni, got a graduate job, sat down at my desk and thought “Is this it??!” I was nothing more than just a coin being put into a machine. My life is starting to really turn around now and I feel inspired by videos like this.
Not to be a dick. But as cool as that sounds it's nonsense. You're comparing the super wealthy elites education from back then to the education a random nobody (no offense. I'm a nobody too) is getting today. The fact is it has little to do with the time period and much more to do with your class. They wouldn't have even pretended to give a shit about your education then...you would just be a servant.
Here are 6 concepts for evening routine (taken from Marcus Aurelius - "Meditations" book) written through MY viewpoint. 1) Compare yourself to where you were yesterday... Plan who you want to be. (read 12 Rules of Life for further details) 2) Put everything in perspective... (stoicism way, everyone problem is just as big as yours) View yourself from a 3rd person and make the decision that way? 3) Physical Exercise ! (see video from What I've Learned or other youtubers) 4) Meditation ! The discomfort you feel when you meditate is equally to the discomfort when someone/something angers you. As you meditate more and more (hours of meditation), that discomfort will slowly fade away... and you'll be almost immune to stress. Meditation lets you control your actions... 5) Review your day ! (see Robin's Sharma morning routine) Ex: write 3 good things that happened today / write 3 bad things (problems) you've faced today 6) Journaling (there are lots of youtubers telling you how to journal the proper way)
@@koolkiddwayne You're welcome.. but still, there are a lot of resources to stay passively informed and it's harder to actually do these activities and have a routine. For example: I've forgot that i wrote this comment, and did nothing last few months..

Short review: 1) contemplation of the sage. What would zeno ? What would my 2.0 version do ? ( First in life you need to know what you want, then think who do you need to be to get that. Than you look for where you are on your journey and just plan your route) 2) view from above Zoom out and put everything in perspective Put your problem in perspective Or View yourself as if you are playing a charecter to take control of your decisions by looking at yourself in third person 3) excercise Work on your body to better work on your mind 4) meditate Train to not itch the itch Control your body and what you want to do. 5) review your day What did you do well ? What did you do wrong ? Are you on track to reaching your goals ? 6) journaling Again a way of learning from your journey and your course

After a man killed 12 hookers, ran a Lamborghini through a shopping mall, and blew up 6 police helicopters, a high-speed pursuit ensued.” *1 hour later* News caster: “Cops managed to subdue the assailant and got a few words from him. This is was he had to say.” Me: “Marcus Aurelius told me to do it!”
Is that really what you want to do..? Kill 12 hookers, run a Lamborghini through a shopping mall, and blow up 6 police helicopters? Marcus Aurelius is not controlling your actions, he's just a guy that existed a long time ago who shared his views on life. Its up to you how much you take from it.
So Marcus Aurelius told u to "pretend you are in a video game"? Hmm, strange... You should have learned from Abraham Lincon he once said: "dont believe everything you read on the internet".
In youth? Listen to the 50+ year old politicians who have been voted in by that generation. They have the vocabulary of a gnat, and slur every second word. I guess it's easier to judge other generations, than to fix your own.
To be truly happy all you can do is drive out things that make you unhappy. Don’t waste time on things you have no control over. Be the better you, for you. Simple but not so obvious to many people. Thanks for the excellent presentation.

Your point of comparing ourselves to our 2.0 version is so wise and ideal 💡 It’s so motivating to not react how our former self would and allows us to make more rational decisions in the moment
Most liked comments are those who are making fun of the video and missing out on the point. The majority of us are unable to have the mindset that's going to help this world become a better place.
If you notice, no one is actually making fun of him. They're implicitly accepting what he says, and find ways share their acceptance in light-hearted jokes. "Your wizard hat is floating" was one of my favourite. Hahaha
Well the YT comment section has evolved into a popularity contest, and also the reason why most top comments all seem so copy paste. Click on the 'sort' button at the top, beside the word 'comments' and it will only show comments from newest to oldest. since most like whores try to make top comments within the few hours the video is posted you won't see them as often.
Your view honestly seems sort of close-minded. You’re saying that people who joke in comment sections can’t make the world a better place? Just because people are making jokes doesn’t mean they don’t agree. Also, not taking stuff too seriously can be helpful in life.
I want to add to the third person idea. For people who go to a gym, you know that they cover the walls with mirrors so you can see yourself from every angle at every moment. Now, some might say that's just because gym peeps are obsessed with looking at themselves. There may be some truth to that, but it is actually a tool. You can observe your own form, as an onlooker rather the from two holes on your face that cant see half of your own body. You can see you're own progress (or lack there of) and adjust your routine. So if you're having a hard time "zooming out", maybe pretend you have mirrors on every wall. For youtube viewers, think about when you watch a stream or youtube vid. Imagine watching a stream of your life or a video of you doing something like your job or your classes or whatever activity. You would be able to judge every success or failure.
Trying to do this. I was on the right track in my youth. Knife was pulled on me and I was stabbed in my hand trying to get away. It has been very disappointing. I work with my hands. I am now trying to adopt this method and find peace and hope. Thank you for sharing.

People nowdays misuderstand meditation by thinking it should be as like emptying the mind when in fact buddha said the total contrary, sit in silence and feel, view every emetion and feel it.accept it in order to have some kind of control so you wont be depended by your emptions=detachment.
Two things that help me are. 1. Am i bettering myself or making the situation worse. (Should i play xbox and drink beers for 8 hours or should i workout, read, apply to jobs, talk to friends and family, etc) 2. Your problems are nothing compared to other people around the world. (Your GF cheating on you doesn't mean shit, breakup with her. People are starving, being killed, homeless, etc. You have things in your life that millions dont have, BE GRATEFUL!!!)
agree but would replace millions with billions. if you make 32,400 USD/year you made it in the 1% of top earners world wide. people in western-EU/US wine so much it makes me wanne vomit
A bad thing happened in your life? Good! What did you learn from it? (Jocko Willink) Using those words I've derailed so many pity parties and seen the person who was ready to weaken themselves through their speech, find new clarity and strength.
Martin Finzsch 32’000.- a year makes something between 3’000 and 4’000 per month. what in switzerland isn’t even middle - class.... you can exactly pay your bills and buy some food. and that’s about it. so what are you dreaming about the 1% ?! 😂 you know you have to be famous and make millions to be in that 1% ...??
The 2 point is dangerous though because at some point you don't let yourself feel the emotions in you. When you do feel emotions then you could talk down to yourself saying people have it worse than you. That's why the third person thing is good. You are allowed to feel sad and other people are too, these things just happen and you can overcome. Basically don't compare pain, it just makes too much conflict. I've gotten third degree burns before, my nerves were damaged from a sudden hole in my lung, and I had an open operation while fully conscious 4 times but paper cuts still hurt.
Through Marcus Aurelius I found out about stoic philosophy and I find it the most convincing philosophy on the question of how to live a good life. But there is an ever more profound concept, for me, which I believe works perfectly with stoicism: mindfulness. Not necessarily because of the relaxing element of it, although you still tend to benefit of this to, but more about the clarity of mind you can reach. To consistently being able to see through the illusion of the self, even just briefly, gives you a better understanding of how you tend to function day by day. At least it did for me. Anyway, just wanted to share this here. I just found your channel through algorithm and I'm very happy I did! Subscribed and looking forward to following you. Cheers. :)
Are you interested in the teachings of The Buddha or just practicing mindfulness because it's the CURRENT THING and makes you briefly happy? Serious question.
@@tomfisher9089 I am interested in some of the teachings, but not all. I tend to pick concepts/lessons from whichever philosophy seems to be most applicable to my life. Hence why I subscribe to the general principles of stoicism too. I tend not to be attached to any one specific teacher or teaching but just kind of wander around the field of ideas. From the Buddah I tend to focus on the four noble truths and the ideas behind it, that is to say suffering (or unsatisfactoriness, as I believe that translation captures the idea of Dukkah the best). I don't follow specific trends either. The way I practice and understand mindfulness is usually not the way is is being taught in the current mainstream, at least not what I have encountered. I hope that responds to your question. :)

Hello James, I think that you've hit the nail on the head when you talk about the subconscious... if we immerse ourselves in the right teachings then slowly but surely we change and break our old habits.... and we just see a different path... well done! Hmmm... 100% commitment... I suppose so, but in my case I've just gradually changed and so I don't see it as a challenge... just found what I want out of life....
Well done James.

I was feeling very depressed for the last few weeks and couldn't stop crying so I decided I needed to do something about it, I started by sticking to an easy routine I did a very easy workout that I could continue without skipping(and even if I did skip I won't be hard on myself and just do it tomorrow) I started reading one hour a day even reading out loud to myself so I can focus on the words and not think too much, and whenever I felt lazy I would tell myself "just this once, if I start I can finish" and also meditation (I'm a Muslim so praying is meditation for me and became more enjoyable). It's been three days now and today I'm so happy and got more stuff done and I'm proud of myself I literally woke up with a rush of dopamine and feel motivated to do more.

A summary...
1. contemplation of the sage
Ask “What would the person I’m looking up to do?” throughout the day
Find the ideal person you want to become. Try to get closer to that every day by comparing to yourself yesterday
2. the view from above
Zoom out in third person view from your person - to your house - the street - the city - the Earth - and so on…
Put your problems in the perspective of the whole world
Throughout the day, view yourself as a character in a video game - alienate yourself from environmental influences
3. physical exercise
Exercise for the benefit of your mind
4. meditation
Control your urge to itch and let it disappear by itself
Apply it to situations to control your reactions
5. review the day
Sit down and think about what happened during the day
Congratulate yourself for everything you did well
Identify the problems you don’t want to have again
See whether you are on track to your goals

So young & so enlightened, You are already so beyond the curve. Bravo to you
@X Marks OP never claimed young man to have wisdom. Enlightenment is in no way correlated to wisdom.
@@RealmsOfGames actually it kind of is.

Ancient classical education was far more superior to raise strong individuals.
And that's the point I guess. Our education system.doesnt want strong individuals. It wants servants and subservient citizens.
Agreed. Interesting that videos like this exist. Shows that there is a fundamental need for freedom of thought
100%. My school constantly rammed it down our throats how lucky we are to go there. They based their success on how many students got into uni, there was literally no other option to go because anything else would have been seen as failure. Here are 6 concepts for evening routine (taken from Marcus Aurelius - "Meditations" book) written through MY viewpoint.
1) Compare yourself to where you were yesterday... Plan who you want to be. (read 12 Rules of Life for further details)
2) Put everything in perspective... (stoicism way, everyone problem is just as big as yours)
View yourself from a 3rd person and make the decision that way?
3) Physical Exercise ! (see video from What I've Learned or other youtubers)
4) Meditation !
The discomfort you feel when you meditate is equally to the discomfort when someone/something angers you. As you meditate more and more (hours of meditation), that discomfort will slowly fade away... and you'll be almost immune to stress. Meditation lets you control your actions...
5) Review your day ! (see Robin's Sharma morning routine)
Ex: write 3 good things that happened today / write 3 bad things (problems) you've faced today
6) Journaling (there are lots of youtubers telling you how to journal the proper way)
A good parable would be " The itch you do not scratch in meditation will soon become the argument you choose not to participate in."
Thank you,I searched through alot of comments just to find this comment.

Short review:
1) contemplation of the sage.
What would zeno ?
What would my 2.0 version do ?
( First in life you need to know what you want, then think who do you need to be to get that. Than you look for where you are on your journey and just plan your route)
2) view from above
Zoom out and put everything in perspective
Put your problem in perspective
Or
View yourself as if you are playing a charecter to take control of your decisions by looking at yourself in third person
3) excercise
Work on your body to better work on your mind
4) meditate
Train to not itch the itch
Control your body and what you want to do.
5) review your day
What did you do well ?
What did you do wrong ?
Are you on track to reaching your goals ?
6) journaling
Again a way of learning from your journey and your course

It’s so motivating to not react how our former self would and allows us to make more rational decisions in the moment
Most liked comments are those who are making fun of the video and missing out on the point. The majority of us are unable to have the mindset that's going to help this world become a better place.
Yasmine Maltoufi lmao they may just be making jokes, doesn't necessarily mean they don't agree with the video
If you notice, no one is actually making fun of him. They're implicitly accepting what he says, and find ways share their acceptance in light-hearted jokes. "Your wizard hat is floating" was one of my favourite. Hahaha
We call that being sarcastic young man. Welcome to the Internet.
TH-cam YOU HAVE DONE it again and this is a very interesting find

Meditation meant something different in Aurelius' day. The goal of modern meditation is to empty the mind. Then it was meant to cause you to think.
@notes from The Beyond thank you for that comment.
People nowdays misuderstand meditation by thinking it should be as like emptying the mind when in fact buddha said the total contrary, sit in silence and feel, view every emetion and feel it.accept it in order to have some kind of control so you wont be depended by your emptions=detachment.
Marcus does refer to it as 'retreating into oneself' rather than meditating explicitly
Two things that help me are.
1. Am i bettering myself or making the situation worse. (Should i play xbox and drink beers for 8 hours or should i workout, read, apply to jobs, talk to friends and family, etc)
2. Your problems are nothing compared to other people around the world. (Your GF cheating on you doesn't mean shit, breakup with her. People are starving, being killed, homeless, etc. You have things in your life that millions dont have, BE GRATEFUL!!!)

@@martinfinzsch8904 It's just a different struggle.

I'm so glad I found your channel. Real, enlightening topics are covered. As far from the Kardashians as you can get. I like that.
