24 years ago I adopted a female German Shepherd and she was quite square compared to modern German Shepherds. She was entirely sound, very stable, trust worthy, intelligent and extremely obedient. She could jump a 4 foot fence like breaking sticks, she was amazing. Today, many German Shepherds can't even walk in a natural and fluid manor. She was smaller than today's German Shepherds but very powerful. I could not find anything like her and gave up on German Shepherds.

      Thats incredibly unbelievable...
Are you sure you looked well because as far as I know there are plenty of Great American showline breeders in American and plenty of workingline breeders as well. They are very "easy" to find.
"Modern" gsds can jump 4 ft fences easily aswell and many jump more than that... Alot more.

If you're looking at a new dog, always go for the working vs the show. Show versions have exaggerated the "bad" traits like the shortened noses on a Boxer and Bull Mastiffs which often need surgery. "Working" versions have way less health problems.
Just like "best in breed" German Shepherds that have terrible hips who can barely walk and the Kennel Club for them says that that is how they are supposed to be..... Except they can't walk, let alone run. How can they work at,,, I don't know,,, Sheep Herding? Sheepherd > Shepherd...

The very sad fact is that the AKC judges put up the extreme specimens for conformation wins. "My" breed is the Doberman. I've been disgusted by the "elegant" 30 inch at the withers giraffe necked pencil heads being put up in the AKC show ring. Never mind that the American AKC conformation only bloodlines breeders are unable to breed specimens to pass even the watered down DPCA Working Aptitude Evaluation. The last time I attended our local AKC breed club sponsored WAE, the only Dobes that passed were a couple of rescues. The brand new FCI (UK and Euro) standard that depicts a sloping topline and over angulated hindquarters for the Dobermann is troubling. The Doberman(n) is supposed to be a medium sized, squarely built dog with a level topline.

Judges can only judge what breeders bring to them. Changes happen over time, it is not sudden. Breeders, buyers, judges, registries all have a responsibility... but truly it starts with breeders. They often lack education and do not explore ethical dog breeding issues.

+Ruta Giedraityte : Same thing in the US. They used to be estate guardians. Now they're wimps who die by 6 YOA. So sad. By the time they grow up, they're a couple years away from death. I have a friend that got a rescue in the early 70s. She lived to be 12. Then he got a male puppy from a reknowned bloodline who quickly achieved his AKC championship. He died of DCM shortly after he acheived his 5th birthday. He had sired several show litters beforehand.

I'm not a breeder and probably just don't get it, but as a dog owner this practice breaks my heart. If it's a person born with genetic and health problems it's taken seriously. But if it's a dog born with genetic and health problems, "This is a perfect, pure bread! You win the dog show! Here's some money and trophies!"
I'm aware that different dog breeds are going to happen because of natural selection but dogs aren't meant to be cosmetic toys. It's not natural to force the existence of a breed this way.

‌Absolutely right. If breeders did from the beginning what they said they were doing - today there would be no division into working and show lines. Breeding dogs that look like modern pugs, mastino, English Bulldogs, German Shepherds, English Mastiffs etc. is just cruelty. There are breeders trying to have an old, healthier type of breed, but their dogs do not go to the "normal" dog shows, because for judges they are "not typical for the breed". And this at a time when the breed standard has often not changed at all. This is insane.

  • @connornotforpublic4135

This is why I love my dogs. I own a Brittany, Great Pry mix (but have had several prys in the past, purebred), Shetland Sheepdogs, my moms Belgian Terv. These are all show and working bred dogs. They're healthy animals who aren't overly exaggerated animals. The only dog that wasn't reguarally used for working, it would be the min pin.
But I show dogs, but the dogs I do show, I also work with them as well. My Brittany is a show dog, he hunts. And well.
My Sheltie's herd, so does the Belgian. Our Great Pyr's guarded. It's sad what we've done to some of these dogs. And one breed I can think of off the top of my head that we've also screwed up is the German Shepherd. It's just sad.

Breeders should breed for health purpose, not show purpose. Dogs arent for show, they are family. Would you bring your sister into a contest "Best of Human Breed"?

    • @akcgermanshepherdbreedinfo2591
      @akcgermanshepherdbreedinfo2591 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Many breeders do breed for health. Show is not the main purpose. Very few breeders actually breed specifically for show. They only show when they think a puppy might be worth it(even if its truly not) well... our "show dogs" are family. Don't think they're being mistreated or anything. They are loved just as much as any "regular" pet...only difference is that they go to shows every once in a while. Many dogs actually enjoy going.
To answer your question... No we wouldn't but also... We are human its simply not done, what is done is a beauty contest.
The reason why the shows are done is so that we can find the best examples of the breed so that they can be bred and pass on correct traits.

You mean how we've ruined dogs?
The dogs we breed today are not nearly as healthy and come with a list of health problems. Why? Because of poor breeding. I don't disagree with having a pure bred German shepherd, but somewhere throw in a lab to add genetic diversity. Eventually the labs physical characteristics will fade, but the genes will be healthier. I get wanting a cuter version of a breed, but at the cost of a healthy one? Nope! Let's see here. Short shouted dogs such as pugs, bulldogs, mastiffs, etc...have breathing problems....we've bred them to have shorter snouts resulting now this problem. The German shepherd...now the breed has a sloping back and narrow body. The breed in the 1900's had a straight back and was build strong. But people don't care so long as they get the appearance they want.

You don't have to throw in a different breed. You just need not to inbred or breed for unhealthy structure. Contrary to popular belief cross breeding does not add to health. The other breed will bring its own set of problems. Testing for genetically inherited health issues, breeding for low COI and good structure goes a long way in keeping a breed healthy and functional.

If the purpose of certain breeds of dogs is to be a shepherd, aka a LGD aka a working dog, then making them fit for apartments greatly diminishes their unique characteristics. This is why the Karakachan dog is kept in farms and countrysides with livestock to look after just like how it's been doing for the past 5000 years in order to protect the gene pool.

+Janie PatchouliSkunk : Those are old photos of human deformities. I believe they were taken in the 1800s. The humans are at either end. The point being made that, as humans, we've advanced as far at mostly eliminating disfiguring and life shortening deformities with ourselves while intentionally breeding dogs with disfiguring and life shortening deformities. Mebbe the now banned old time human freak shows that satisfied a perverse fascination with the horrible and grotesque are now satisfied by some modern show breeds? Remember the "Elephant Man?" He was a well taken care of sad freak that made money for the person that showed him. He never was treated like a man, but a quaint freak that others would pay money to look at with horrified fascination.

In the case of boxer you are wrong.Your photos you show us are the first dogs which they used in early stage of breedind before the breed take todays shape in around 1930 by adding more bulldog bloodlines. But for all other breeds you have absolutly right. Only Rottweilers are the same dogs as in 1910 because the breeders has one goal: working abillities not shows! And thats why they releativly healthy. German Sheperds are excellent dogs but also in the last 30 years they "suffer" from the frogy style back legs! Also the health problems in breeds today is a result of bad breeding (inbreeding) meaning brother & sisters have mate and mothers & sons, witch means smaller gene pool and many health problems like cancers.

it is sad really, the breeders are putting father to daughter and sister to brother or they may miss a generation but always a lot of inbreeding. It defines the strongest characteristics. However it also passes the bad bits on aswell. If you own a so called well bred pedigree dog all u need to do is look at it. The same stud dog will be present for generations in one way or another. People even say if u wanna find a good stud for a bitch look through the papers and there u will find one...

+Chiara Rosati Not to mention that seizures, heart conditions and lung cancer are rife within this breed. That's not to say that they can't be perfectly healthy, but if you are looking to get one, make sure you find a breeder that does all tests possible to ensure any breeding dog is healthy. This includes ensure their somewhat shortened (but not drastically so) muzzle does not affect their breathing.

Skye Iron Don't worry, i've changed my view, I still believe that dogs should have their distinctive type, but it have to fit with their working pourpose. Anyway you're right, it's essential to choose a breeder who tests his dogs all about health, character and "beauty", in this order

That's good. My friend had a lab boxer mix. His name was Milo, and while he looked mostly like a Labrador he died of lung cancer from his boxer side. His death was unexpected and hit my friend hard. It's for reason's like this that I want to inform as many people as I can about their favoured breeds health risks so that they are aware of the common problems in that breed and ask them to ensure they thoroughly check the background of any puppy they buy, minimizing the chances of an early death from hereditary health risks.

  • @stevenm73
    @stevenm73 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Not the first time I have watched this video. How can anyone who watches this possibly believe that show breeders and the kennel clubs have "improved" our dog breeds? It is painfully obvious all these people have done is destroy breed after breed for the last 150 years, believing they're actually making the dogs "better." Many of them have lost the physical ability and mental capacity to do the jobs they were originally bred for, can not breed or give birth naturally. Who in their right minds wants to throw their hard earned money out the window on a "show dog" when what they're actually getting is an animal that either already has physical problems or developing physical problems and comes with a laundry list of genetic ailments and behavioral problems that sadly are considered "normal" for it's breed? All you can be sure of is you will be spending large amounts of time and money at the vet's office. Who benefits from this? Not you, and not the dog which will have a shortened lifespan, riddled with physical, mental and genetic disease. NO. The only ones benefiting in any way are the breeder who will happily sell you another puppy after the one you have is put down and the vet who treated your last dog and who will be treating your new one until it too dies young. NO THANK YOU! It's been my experience that so called backyard breeders have the better dogs anymore. By better, I mean they're healthy, live longer, have more stable temperments, can actually do the job they were bred for. Most people I know that would fall into that hated category of BYB wouldn't waste time or money on a dog that couldn't work, stayed sick and couldn't be trusted around the kids or cost them an arm & a leg at the vet's office every time they turned around. It's all a money game. If you're doing right by the doge, you will not make money breeding & selling. If anything, you'll end up losing money. Good breeders have good dogs that ARE NOT grotesquely deformed, are healthy, can still do what their ancestors were bred for originally and if they were bred right, can do it better than their ancestors did. CH & GRCH are given too freely I think. Sure, many of the kennel club dogs may be pretty but can the dog still hunt, track, retrieve game, do protection work, search & rescue, pull sleds, etc.? He should not only be "pretty" he needs to be able to work as well. In some horse breeds (i.e. Warmbloods, Lippizaners, etc, ... forgive the spelling) thry have to be evaluatd pass performance tests before being allowed to reproduce. Health & temperment screenings, and performance tests, that's how we will be able to actually improve and save our dog breeds but I fear many are sadly, beyond the point of no return. Man's greed and bad judgement has nearly ruined the the best, most loyal and loving of animals we have been blessed to share our lives with

obviously someone who thinks had discover the dog world... but careless to go in-depth of what a DOG Breeder goals are... bad publicity is the goal over here nothing else... as every other video posted by this person just watch her channel videos... there is always two faces of the coin..and sadly instead of choosing a positive topic of how good breeders do...or how THE current VERSION as she states... are track field champions, retrieving champions... u name it!

+Karolina Arevalo They have chosen to reveal to those who are less knowledgeable on the subject of show breeding what humans have done to dogs by exaggerating their features to the point that the dogs are either in constant pain, or are so physically unfit that they can no longer complete the tasks they were once bred for. There are two types of breeders(puppy mill breeders not included); Those who breed for conformation and don't give a damn about what the dog suffers just as long as they get their fancy new ribbon at the end of the day (the show breeders who breed for conformation), and those who actually care about the health of their dog's and don't breed those whose physical structure directly contributes to health problems (working type), for example; loose skin (especially near the eyes), flat faces, misshapen heads, spinal problems whether due to a double curled tail or a ridge etc. Those who do well in track field and those who are retrieving champions are all work types and have no exaggerated features (also known as deformities).
There would be no use in choosing a positive topic of how well the GOOD and RESPONSIBLE breeders do, we already know how awesome the HEALTHY dogs they breed are. They were simply pointing out that the show standard is a disgusting bastardisation of what it should have been. Bad publicity is not the goal, opening peoples eyes to the dark side of show breeding is.
Also, by the way you have defended conformation show breeding, I can only assume that you (or someone close to you) are one of the irresponsible show breeders who cares nothing for the longevity and comfort of the poor, innocent dogs you (or someone close to you) breeds. This person spreads more truth than you do... You with your poisonous lies and falsehoods. And even if this isn't so, you still support the extreme inbreeding that is commonplace with conformation show breeding, in which the most distantly related breeding is between grandparent and grandchild unless the breeder in question decides to bring in new blood.

Yeah, none of the show type dogs on this list are physically healthy.

I had a 1960s style Euro Dobermann I obtained in the 1980s. I entered him in US breed specialties in obedience and temperament tests. He blew the others away. The AKC show matrons scoffed at his "unelegant" appearance because of his substantial head and muscle. We also obtained a SchH I way back when Dobes were hardly represented at all in trials. He also lived well into his 14th year with no health issues until his last 2 months when he succumbed to lympho. Thank goodness for the US United Doberman Club. They are very concerned with a Dobe's longevity and working temperament, as well as their beauty.

+Agent Fungus Which is where the good breeders come in. I once came across someone who wanted a Doberman from a particular breeder (I think the breeder was in Germany but I am not certain. This was quite some time ago). This guy wanted the puppy from the line of a dog that had died at the age of 7 from a heart condition, just because this dog was beautiful and was basically the epitome of Doberman conformation. Seriously does this guy have no brain at all? The thing about heart conditions, is that they tend to be hereditary. My grandfather died during an open heart operation to give him an artificial valve because one wasn't working properly. This condition is hereditary, so if any of my siblings or I get something like a heart murmur or start to feel weak and out of breath, we have to mention this to our doctor (as it has a tendency to show up later in life) to do the appropriate tests to ensure this heart condition has not formed.

Skye Iron : Yep. Heredity is so very important. Thankfully, there are good breeders that try their best to screen whatever is possible to avoid breeding carriers of congenital diseases. With DNA screening, so much has been accomplished the past decade. However, so much is still unknown. Thankfully, so many working Dobermann breeders are dedicated.
I've encountered so many rescue Dobies on my walks who are physically and mentally wonderful examples of the breed, that mebbe the Dobermann breeders should mebbe consider outcrossing to undocumented dogs. It worked for Basinjis.

it is sad really, the breeders are putting father to daughter and sister to brother or they may miss a generation but always a lot of inbreeding.
