      Burgomeister Heinrich Essig of Leonberg wanted a dog resembling the lion on the town crest.
      He bred a mix of Great Pyrenees, red Saint Bernard, and Landseer Newfoundland, and successfully developed a new breed with the desired appearance, and with the temperament and working abilities of the contributing breeds.

      Rescue dogs are always so grateful and happy to have a place to call home. I would love to see these dogs pulled from shelters and put into training programs to benefit people. There are millions of people who need dogs for several different problems, anywhere from diabetes, seizures to cancer. Dogs have been proven to detect these problems. It would cut down on so many dogs in shelters and give them a much-needed breather. Dogs love people and only want to have a home and someone who will love them. There would be a lot more service animals for people and they don't have to spend a lot of money on breeders. I think some insurance companies will cover the cost of a service animal. I would have to check on that. I am currently working on getting ESA's on the Service Animal list. Despite what the American Disability Act says, they are a service animal. Problems like depression, anxiety, and many other emotional or psychiatric problems, they don't stop at the front door. If there are people with these kinds of disabilities, please contact the Department of Justice and ask them to change this. ESA's or better known as Emotional Support Animals are a great way to alleviate these problems without using a lot of drugs. Millions of dogs and cats can be saved if we train them to help millions of people in their daily lives. And getting rid of the puppy mills would make a huge dent in our over population problem.

    I have an American Akita, which has only recently been recognized as a different breed than the Akita Inu. The Akita was first brought after WWII and American breeders bred them to have heavier bone structures, making them bigger than their Japanese ancestors. After some time they decided that the breed had enough key changes that it had to be recognized as a different breed altogether. I wonder how their genomes differ. Mine might not be pure because I couldn't get papers for her, but I only got her by chance and I didn't pay for her. The people who had the puppies didn't separate their dogs early enough and had accidental puppies. They did charge for 5 of the 7 pups, but they gave the last two females for free to people they know cause they were worried that someone would take them to a puppy mill.

    I still don't get how u can selectively breed wolves till you eventually get something that looks nothing like it. That's like having a population consisting solely of 5'6" Hispanics and somehow through selective breeding, you get a 7 foot tall Chinese person.

    • @jlp6864
      @jlp6864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if they look the same on the surface level there are some little differences (some wolves are slightly taller than others for example) these differences are natural and happen random
      Humans selected those wolves with the same small differences and started bredding them.a lot.
      Sadly theres pretty much guaranteed to be incest involved
      You wait a few generations until the originally small differences become bigger and more noticable because the wolf pups pick from a smaller genum (due to incest often).
      Thats how it works
      Edit: also wolves that were more friendly and less shy towards people were bred resulting in pups that had a different coat and body features than those of wild wolves (yup behavioural bredding leads to a difference in looks too - check out that one russian dude who domesticated silver foxes and made them look like pseudo dogs if youd like to know more)

      +William Smith Yep, mutts are great. Less health problems and much more variety than purebred dogs. And mutts aren't bred for money, so you're less likely to be supporting puppy mills and the overpopulation of dogs when there are so many healthy dogs killed every day. Even if you buy from a reputable breeder, there are plenty of purebred dogs that are euthanized so you'd still be supporting overbreeding.

    • @demondevongirl666

      2 phisically or mentaly unsound dogs dont produce sound healthy puppies no matter the breed or mix. any name ending in "doodle" or "poo" are mixes bred for $, often more then health tested common purebreeds. no mater what dog you buy, others will still die without a home.

    • @katzpajamas5123
      @katzpajamas5123 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Nothing wrong with mutts, but there's a prominent misconception that they're healthier than purebred dogs. In all actuality, the only difference between getting a mutt and getting a purebred dog is knowing what you're getting. A purebred dog will come with the basic knowledge of genetic history provided by your breeder. Many of these people dedicate their lives to breeding healthier, more friendly animals and they enable a great deal of the information provided in the video to exist. The AKC licencing fees go directly toward kennel inspections(to prevent puppy mill situations) and genetic testing and research. It's a network of people who've dedicated themselves to making dogs' lives better. So there's really no need to scorn the purebred dog. A mutt can be just as likely to have severe genetic defects, only you don't know what to look for. Of course..there's always the allure of owning a completely unique dog and knowing there will never be another one like it ;) I love mutts. And I love purebred dogs. You should too!

    • @diceman199
      @diceman199 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +William Smith As with all things it's a case of doing your research on both the "product" and the "supplier"
      So say you wanted a german shepherd, you research it, find the breed has a tendency towards hip problems. So you find a breeder who has had both the dogs hip scored to make sure they don't have problems. Really good breeders will have hip scores for all the grandparents too.
      Good breeders are actively breeding out these faults now.

    • @Koolkid736
      @Koolkid736 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Primalxbeast mutts aren't bred for money? they're probably the main dogs to be bred for money. you know breeds like maltipoos, labradoodles, cockapoos, ect? they are just mutts that people breed so people think they're getting some special dog breed but in reality they're getting a mutt.

    My favorite is the Pit Bull. No, not the blocky headed dogs that shelters automatically label as pit bulls (although I do love them too). The American Pit Bull Terrier. Bred for its gameness using for dogfighting, brought over to America, changed the name to American Staffordshire Terrier in the AKC, first Am Staff champion was Kirby of Indiana in 1940. With famous pit dogs including Mayday, Eli, Snooty, and Iron Kid. The breed that never quits. Oddly enough with their inbreeding, they are, in general, very healthy dogs. They were careful with inbreeding though and didn't overdo it.

    I think that it is important to understand that, when we get right down to it, all domesticated dogs are mixed or what is many times referred to as a "mutt." Truthfully there are no purebred dogs. That's not to say that dog breeds do not exist. Breed is a construct created by humans from breeding certain dogs or other breeds that have been created together for uniformity for certain traits or certain purposes. That is why there are breed standards for these breeds to dictate whether or not a dog is of a certain breed. There is a very informative video called "The Bizarre Truth About Purebred Dogs (and Why Mutts Are Better) - Adam Ruins Everything" that can be found on TH-cam which discusses this. I think that a better term for "purebred" should be used when referring to dog breeds. I believe that something like "thoroughly-bred" or "fully-bred" would be better terms to use. I also believe that people should go back to the concept of type rather than breed. Our ancestors did not breed for uniformity for a certain look or to strictly match a certain set of standards. They bred more for jobs or roles which did lead to distinct variation in appearance between the types. In the past, there were types of dogs instead of breeds. For example, there were Retrievers, Pointers, Spaniels, Sheepdogs, Livestock Guardian Dogs, Hounds, Mastiffs, Bulldogs or Bull types, and even Toy types or Pet types. Any dog that did the work or filled the role and looked somewhat like a type of dog was that type of dog. But make no mistake, our ancestors did take breeding seriously, maybe even more seriously than people do today, for they were not focused so much on how a dog looked. They were much more concerned about how it performed or if it could fill its role well. Going by type would help increase diversity in dogs so that the gene pool would not be as limited or restricted and can lead to healthier and more physically and mentally sound dogs. Also, by breeding for jobs and roles more than conforming to specific looks, more people will be breeding more for health and soundness for what the dogs are bred for or for what they want them to be able to do or fulfil. That all being said, I must say that breed is not necessarily a bad concept. When people breed for health and soundness and do not sacrifice what is important for the sake of a certain look, things are ideal. It is when people let visual gratification get in the way that problems could arise in overall structure and composition of dogs. Some standards or directions for which some breeders are going need to be changed for some breeds. There are dog shows out there where the dogs that are winning and considered best in show are not the best structurally sound dogs. For example, there are very flat-nosed and low-to-the-ground English Bulldogs that win best in show even when some of them cannot breath properly, breed naturally, or give birth naturally because the puppies are too wide to go through the birth canal. Such dogs need artificial insemination to breed and veterinarian assistance to give birth. This problem in some dogs of this breed could be corrected without even breeding outside of the breed by only breeding dogs of that breed that can breed and give birth naturally and leaving the ones that can't out of the breeding program as well as making sure that the dogs who can breath and move easily and well are the ones that are bred and not the ones that cannot.

      +saturdayocean Thank you very much. However, I do not think that the African Wild Dog would count in this instance and, to my knowledge, I do not think the African Wild Dog can even interbreed with domestic dogs to produce offspring, so they would be considered more of another category of canine all together.

      QueenPikmin Not necessarily. While the concept of purebred is a made-up concept, that is not to say that breeds and selective breeding do not exist. They most certainly do and we must acknowledge the selective breeding for uniformity that people have done and the standards for these breeds.

      +saturdayocean That's not what purebred means. Wild dogs are mongrels by nature as their gene pool is diverse like any other wild species. Dog breeding is when the breeder limits the gene pool on purpose, in order to bring out recessive traits or make certain characteristics more pronounced.

      No. Purebreds are created thru selective breeding. Not by crossing and slapping a name on the result.
      Many old breeds were established from selectively breeding for specific worki g abilities until they developed into distinct types.
      Some are the result of selectively breeding one breed in a different direction

    Thanks for covering the fact the extreme features some breeds of dogs are bred for can seriously affect their quality of life. The king cavalier spaniel in particular is often bred with a head that is way to small for it's brain causing life long suffering and an award winning dog of this breed with a severe case of this disease will still be bred extensively passing on the suffering to large numbers of offspring. Breed standards for show dogs have so many nit-picky harmless traits that will disqualify them from winning a show, yet they don't disqualify dogs that are bred with extreme congenital health problems.

    • @Primalxbeast
      @Primalxbeast 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Primalxbeast German Shepherds are another example of harmful breed standards. A GSD is meant to be a strong working dog, but the breed standard for the show dogs is to have a sloping back that is very harmful to their health and makes them unusable as actual working dogs because of how weak their back ends are. But somebody decided this defect was attractive looking, so now show dogs have to be bred with this defect to have any hope of actually winning in a show.

    Say what? There are breeds that are thousends of years old and not "a couple of hundred years at the most" as you put it. Take the Saluki, a breed that was common in ancient egypt and especially known for being beautiful, and healthy, not having all the genetic issues of the modern breeds.

    Please forgive me for being the pronunciation police, but it’s called a Chiari Malformation, with the “Ch” pronounced like a “K” (Ki-ari)... I should know because I also have one. The drastic rise in human Chiari diagnoses over the past several years has been credited to the MRI and its ever increasing resolution quality. I’ll try & explain it in as simple terms as I can: basically the vault at the base of my skull which holds the cerebellum formed too small (a birth defect called a neural tube defect and related to Spina Bifida), so part of my cerebellum herniates (or gets crammed) down into my spinal canal, which disrupts the flow of spinal fluid. Often when this disruption happens it causes a lifetime of damage, pain & even permanent disability (as in my case). In my case, the disruption in flow of spinal fluid caused a cyst or cavity to form in my actual spinal cord from T5-T8 (a secondary condition called Syringomyelia), which then caused scoliosis. I now also have damage to my optic nerve from bouts with hydrocephalus or increased intracranial pressures as well as other related damage. Sadly, the only real fix is brain surgery, but it’s not guaranteed to help and many people end up worse off with complications because it’s such a highly invasive surgery. I believe I heard somewhere that Chiari in dogs is most common in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Not sure why, but likely the way they were bred and the unique positioning of their brain & skull.

    People say a mixed breed is healthier, but not necessarily!
    For example if you cross a border collie with a Labrador, as this conception is believed, people don't health test their dogs, the puppy could get hip dysplasia.
    However, if you're breeding two labs together, you'll most likely health test them, resulting in a healthier puppies!
    Also, you said Golden lab, that's a yellow lab! A golden lab isn't a thing, and a golden retriever X lab is called a Goldador, so no, a golden lab isn't a thing at all!

    +Seeker 1st of I have to correct you Julia at 3:48 - Foxes are *NOT* related to the dog or the wolf. Foxes are a member of the "cat" or Feline family. Strange I know. My favorite breed of dog that I recommend to *ANYONE* is called the kelpie. Which stars in two movies made in Australia - "Red Dog" and "Red Dog -true blue". The American Kennel Club stupidly doesn't classify the Kelpie as a dog breed. *IT IS* what else would you call it, a fish?

    • @saraharrison6836
      @saraharrison6836 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the science award does NOT go to... Where to begin? Foxes aren't felines, they are canids. AKC is a purebred registry in this country. Most dogs aren't American purebreds. But, they are still fish. Pretty sure this is all moot because I have a friend who raises and shows kelpies. They certainly are not recommended to "anyone" as a pet. They aren't recomended at all as pets.
      Be careful about falling in love with dogs because you saw one in a movie. This is what causes pet overpopulation. Kelpie is a working dog. Not a pet. Australian ranchers created it and have exactly as many as they need . There isn't surplus enough to fill every suburban back yard. Puppy mills can help you with that, though.
      Go to the movies. Fall in love. Get a puppy. Discover that Goldens don't play basketball. They poop on the carpet, chew your shoes and knock up the neighbor's mutt. Take him to the pound. Blame the breeders. Despite the fact that the pound is 99% full of mutts. 1% popular-puppy mill-pups. It was caused by breeders? Go figure.
      Dogs breeds exist because people want consistency in their dog's behaviour and body - so the dog can do his job. So extreme differences between breeds. Strong similarity within the breed Dog shows = objective people tell you if your dog is similar enough to it's type to be bred. Nothing sinister about it. Stop doing it and dogs go extinct.
      Dogs get and protect your food. If dogs go extinct, humans are doomed. Don't know how and why there are different breeds? Obviously, you have never even seen where your food comes from. If you have never even seen where your food comes from, then dogs are none of your business. Literally. Stay out of it. You don't need a dog and shouldn't even talk about them.
      What? You gonna love 'em and have one anyway? I'm not the boss of you?
      OK. Well then find the breed that suits your lifestyle. Your intelligence, activity, household, and experience.
      Extreme variability between breeds. "High exercise needs" does't mean you think you can promise to take it to the dog park. I means pick another pet unless you are a triathlete. If you really don't want to go to the dog park, there are breeds that don't want to go right along with you. Exercise needs/energy level is number one consideration. You and your dog will end up neurotic if you pick a dog because of it's looks and just think you will work out the rest.
      The next most important thing is how easily trained. Some breeds really don't care what you want. Others live to please. Huge variability from breed to breed. If you have never trained a dog in your life and get a hard-headed dog, brace yourself for some really tough times including losing your rental agreement, neighbors complaining, friends won't come over, destroyed possessions, other pets killed etc. If you run like a girl, don't get a Cane Corso.
      Learn before you yearn. Spy before you buy. Training is better than straining.

    0:40 False, there are dog breeds that are between 2000-8000 years old. MOST dog breeds have been created recently, but types (sheepdog, livestock guardian, sled dog, scent hound, sight hound, pest control, toy dog, etcetera) have been around for thousand of years, and some breeds truly have been isolated - on islands or up in the mountains - for that long, and are pure breeds for a very long time.

    The 7 "new" breeds you mentioned at the beginning aren't new. They've been around for many, many years. They just weren't registered by the AKC. They were registered in other countries and you could show them in the miscellaneous group or at UKC. They didn't just create "new" breeds as those take years to develop. Also, why do you have mixed feelings about dog shows? Dog shows have nothing to do with how breeds were created. They have changed how SOME breeds have evolved. Some haven't changed much. For example, the AKC English Setter breed standard hasn't changed since 1909.
