I was just thinking this, I really want a similar rts with squads system, and I think I preferred LOTRBFME 1's building system because it was unique and it still looked kind of like a town. It would be cool to have a game like that that let you expand out like Frost Punk per base further and further. Also a game like that where its not just war all the time, could just focus economy and base building too, maybe a 4x top down strategy.

More importantly, the way you talked truly gives the sensation that you really are passionated and committed to the subject and not just making some kind of top video. :) I'm more a tactical player, my hope is that Wargroove won't be a perfect clone of Advance Wars mechanics.Necromunda's teaser is intriguing but if it's like the boardgame, it will be unnecessary tedious and unbalanced. To answer your question, a good strategy game should be at first all gameplay. You can add all the units, factions, levels, campaigns, musics and fancy graphics you want, without a solid enjoyable gameplay it is hard to sell to me. IMHO, it's the core algorithm of any game (even narrative or contemplative ones), the thing you should start thinking before a universe or a story. The rest is easier to forgive and to improve, especially if you allow modding. I think that's what every classics have in common.

I hope AOE4 will be about the late 1800's, 1900's and the world wars. Iron Harvest looks cool. Every Stronghold release after Crusader have been dissapointing but I had some fun with Stronghold Kingdoms and I'll give them the benefit if the doubt with Stronghold Next. Three kingdoms Total War has the potential to be amazing but with trailers for DLC before the main game is even out gave me chills down my spine. Give me Knights of Honor 2 and my life will be fulfilled:D
The best thing about strategy games is the reward, the sense of accomplishment, for hours and sessions of careful planning and effort put into inner politics, diplomacy, trade & economy, military and technology, seeing through enemies ploys and counter-act (or fall victim to their scheme and try to recover), and in the end to see everything fall into place according to your design, all for the greater benefit of your faction. Seeing your strategies unfold on the battlefield, crushing your enemies, to see them driven before you. That might very well be the most enjoyable thing!
Gameplay and replayability is the most perfect strategy game. Sid meier's Civilization franchise are successful because of their randomness especially the map that can be chosen can be many different variety depending on minute details and the many other things etc..
OH MAH Gawd yess plz. Knights of honor 2 is all i need in life. I wish they would implement some of the campaign map elements from games like medieval 2 Total War Though. Like years passing, season changes and a more balanced trade system. Advancing technology would also be nice:)
I think that Imperator Rome is the one I am most excited about, mostly because I have started to really enjoy Paradox's games lately. Although Stronghold and Warcraft, how can one not get excited about news like that! A good strategy game though, I think the game play itself is the single most important ingredient. And the more complex, or rather dynamic, the better. I mean that one decision shouldn't result in an all to easy to foresee outcome, but you should have an idea of what happens. Like gathering resources shouldn't be just clicking a button every 5 minutes, but rather it should be incorporated in a more complex way that affect everything else that happens. Same goes for battles and armies, their quality should not solely depend on where you are in a linear tech-tree at the moment, but instead depend on the sum of earlier events. Of course this should be controllable and reproducible, so that you actively can affect your future. But not so simplified that you need to push this button now to be able to do that later.
I'm a very niche oriented gamer. I love history games first and foremost. I grew up on Civ2, AOE and finally my all time favorite series Total War. For years as a kid I dreamed of my ultimate dream game Napoleon Total War, but it didn't come out until I was 25 and kind of getting out of gaming. In fact I have never even played it. Rome Total War was the last game I played that I loved more than any other. The other idea I have always had would be to attempt to fuse the 4X turn based strategy of Civilization with the Real Time Tactical element of Total War. That would be the ultimate 4X/TBS/RTT gaming experience. I even imagined once that a fusion of castle building such as the wonderfully free and creative engine used by Stronghold would have gone well as a fun supplement to Medieval Total War. Lords of the Realm tried to do exactly that years before Total War but sadly Lords of the Realm never caught up with the Total War tactical battle engine quality.
I've seen many top "XX" games youtube channel, but this one is the best of them all. very detail, short and bold intro, just like seeing tactical view while seeing gameplay in action. Subscribed !.
I try my best to dig up the hidden gems to put along the obvious big ones. People are always saying there's never anything much coming out but if you get past the AAA games there are a lot of good games there.

As for what creates the perfect game, I think it's the replayability. When 1 small change ends up in completely different game. With deep lore and campaign. And maybe after all of this also balanced multiplayer or even better coop. It sounds weird, but we still don't have many rts that really use physics

What's missing from this list is Ymir. A combination of 4x and city builder, it is quite a deep and interesting game. Play a civilization of intelligent pigs from the prehistoric to the medieval era. Currently in closed alpha, keys are sold once per month.

the ant game looks great and is more appealing than almost all the others which are mostly warlike. I can't believe how far on Settlers has come since the old game Settlers 2 was the last one I played. Re-Legion had a Sydicate Wars feel to it. Would love an updated version of that
Overall I'm disappointed with Total war games, Instead of making in- depth games, like we hoped for back in 2009 with technology improving every day and allowing it, etc..we see more and more streamlining. Recently I was playing Rome 2, and I realized what a cheap game this is by CA. They used consumer psychology by setting a high price making it feel like it's a game of value. But Rome 2 offers nothing. There is practically 0 immersion compared to previous titles, the only videos they give us are their trailer ads, voiced by a couple of un-talented actors. Their dialogue is non-sensical. Then there is the battle itself, they abandoned all other aspects of the game claiming "we are a company that focuses on battles" and they failed even with that. Recently I experimented with custom battles, and dispite using mods to improve fighting mechanics and animations, it was still horribly bad to watch. All they are is pretty units that move about again thanks to mods no thanks to CA, and when they clash, you don't understand what the F*** is going on.. Their battle maps are mostly bugged, and the few sieges of NOte such as Rome or Carthage, are historically inacurate and bugged as well, Recently I was playing Rise of the Republic dlc, and the seige of Carthage was more bugged than the Grand campaign I don't know why. The city was at 5 slots, and on the battle map, you didn't play in fully expanded Carthage, and my reinforcements were bugged, stuck in the edge of the water, and spawing half strength, because half my men were killed by the bug. Even their most recent release on Rome 2 is a fiasco. CA seems to be going down a path of making eye-candy games that are nice to watch only so to fetch a high price, but as games, they are completely unplayable, useless, and sometimes even a downright pain to experience and always struggling to make them work.. Please please wait for release of China total war. because something tells me you will be downright disappointed. These people don't seem to want to learn any lesson, the only way to hurt them is with money.

Totally not messing about here. I have an idea for an RTS that will change the way all RTS’s are played forever more. Iv been sitting on this idea for 20 years. I don’t have any programming skills and I don’t know how to protect my idea from being stolen? Because it would be. Iv spoke to Developers 15-20 years ago who said the technology isn’t there yet for what your suggesting.. but now it is! This idea came to me when I was first playing Dune2000, it is quite ironic that the game Dune2 was the first real RTS that we all know today. It changed everything.. my idea will do the same. If there is a small development team out there that would like to work with me we could make gaming history. watch out Starcraft I’m gunning for you.
I recently checked out Unsung Story Kickstarter page and the new developer has made a lot of progress on the game. It kinda looks promising, maybe it can make the list upcoming tactics list one day.
Yeah it was, but if you look into it, you can also understand why they tried it. Older Dawn of Wars were generally a hit, but mostly a hit within the niche of people already interested in the WH40K universe, so it generally had small but very strong user bases (I mean, I still play Dawn of war 2 and 1), but they simmer out and there aren't many new players at a specific point. What they tried to do, was make a game that was more accessible, with mechanics that weren't as punishing as Dawn of War 2, but also not as simple as Dawn of War 1... On top of that, they tried to create a game that was ready for an e-sports market, opening up to a whole new set of players. This all backfired, not only was the game bad in a competitive sense, predictable and so basic, that most matched played out in the same general way, with the same units being built and used with little variation. It also alienated the crowd interested in a real WH40K experience, being disappointing with how loose it really played with the lore and how the mechanics worked with that lore in mind. So suddenly, they had no casual players, no new players and no wh40k fan players to call too, because everyone had their own grievances with the game. It would have been received better if it wasn't a DOW game and wasn't placed in the WH40K universe. Yeah, it was a disaster, but I do think Relic can make good games and there's a good chance they won't take such risks with AoE4, but that's my opinion on the matter.
COH2 is dog shit bruh. there is dlc literally for DLC. that game is fucking awefull. relic deliberately balances their new patches to sell dlc. all the new factions always come out extremely op. sorry but you dont know what your talking about. theres a reason coh2 has a gillion bad reviews. relic is awful.
Panzercorps was good but you could have easily cheat your way through it, because of the dice system, so when important units were clashing and you didn't like the result of the dice roll, you just had to reload the save game before the fight and could have done it till you got the result in your favour. I had to do this a couple of times with some unrealistic results. 2 plans vs 6 plans, and the result was 1 and 1 left alive...
Oh man, Ai War2, as someone who loved the first ai war and has the whole game, I can't wait for it. AI war was such a unique game and so much fun to play co-op, I can't wait!
@@seanpoole6025 Sure, DoWIII is well optimized...at the expense of everything else. And I'm still worried about AoEIV. Despite the fact that Relic has multiple dev teams, and it happened that DoWIII was done by an inexperienced team, this still makes me concerned.
Well the announcement video came out last year and we have yet to hear any news. I really hope that means they are putting a lot of time into it. But honestly it doesn't matter who is working on AOE4 the chances of it being a big hit are super low. They have a huge name to live up to.

I'm telling you guys, keep an eye on Desperadoes 3 by mimi games. They made Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun and in short, it's the best strategy stealth game of all time.

what I would love to see is RTS with environment that will react to your actions, with floods and tornados and landslides when you cut down all trees on the hill. With resources not just on some little spots but with large mountains in which you will have to dig to find iron or gold or whatever and then build mines and tunnels under that mountain, where you could literally mine out the whole hills for your resources, not just building mines and looking on some number gettin lower so you have to build another mine and wait till it's also empty. I want large maps that are alive, not just textures and trees, maps where you can build towns and villages and connect them into an empire and where the battles of large armies could change the entire look of map. I know that there are games that has some of this aspects and I know it's not easy to make RTS that will be really perfect with everything I mentioned and maybe we are not there yet with PC performance but who knows, maybe one day...

Hey I'm glad I could help you find it! I've more recently discovered every mention of Netstorm is met with overwhelming positivity haha. I haven't played it myself but everyone seems to love it.
My perfect, Grand Strategy, PDS style. The more complex, the better. I don't care for multiplayer other than coop campaigns with friends. A game like Europa Universalis IV is my ideal.
Some of these look fantastic, hope the gameplay will be as good. Especially AoE IV(!), didn't like the 3rd very much so still stuck in 2nd :/ Well not really, 2nd is the one to go for a "real" Age of Empires game, but I've also been playing Age of Empires online for a while now. Played it back when Microsoft had it up and running, it was shut down 2014 but has been revived by the community with Project Celeste. I've got the impression that a lot of people don't know about it being back up, which is a damn shame because it's actually a very good game. I can recommend it to anyone who likes RTS games.
I loved the first Knights of Honor, a part two would be awesome. But what i´m really looking for is a Sins of a solar empire 2 (With a Star Trek Armada 4 Mod xD) and something like Supreme Commander (No, not Planetary Annihiliation).
Im mostly excited about imperator rome. I have played alot of pdx games but I am pretty sure this will be my favorite. It will bring back total war rome nostalgia but in 4x gameplay. Rome2 was a horrific disapointment to me. The imperator rome mechanics will be interesting even tho its familiar from the other games.
Something like crusader kings 2 but implementation of city building and more like total war combat... Or even stellaris just to make it more visually appealing
Next year seem to be quite alot of Age of Sail based games. Could you happen to do a video about that? Especially when it comes to Naval combat and so forth. (Pirates of the Burning Sea or AC: Black Flag for example)

As for what creates the perfect game, I think it's the replayability. When 1 small change ends up in completely different game. With deep lore and campaign. And maybe after all of this also balanced multiplayer or even better coop. It sounds weird, but we still don't have many rts that really use physics

What's missing from this list is Ymir. A combination of 4x and city builder, it is quite a deep and interesting game. Play a civilization of intelligent pigs from the prehistoric to the medieval era. Currently in closed alpha, keys are sold once per month.
Ymir is the city-building list. I'm keeping a close eye on that one and have covered it on the channel really early on.

Overall I'm disappointed with Total war games, Instead of making in- depth games, like we hoped for back in 2009 with technology improving every day and allowing it, etc..we see more and more streamlining. Recently I was playing Rome 2, and I realized what a cheap game this is by CA. They used consumer psychology by setting a high price making it feel like it's a game of value. But Rome 2 offers nothing.
There is practically 0 immersion compared to previous titles, the only videos they give us are their trailer ads, voiced by a couple of un-talented actors. Their dialogue is non-sensical. Then there is the battle itself, they abandoned all other aspects of the game claiming "we are a company that focuses on battles" and they failed even with that. Recently I experimented with custom battles, and dispite using mods to improve fighting mechanics and animations, it was still horribly bad to watch. All they are is pretty units that move about again thanks to mods no thanks to CA, and when they clash, you don't understand what the F*** is going on.. Their battle maps are mostly bugged, and the few sieges of NOte such as Rome or Carthage, are historically inacurate and bugged as well, Recently I was playing Rise of the Republic dlc, and the seige of Carthage was more bugged than the Grand campaign I don't know why. The city was at 5 slots, and on the battle map, you didn't play in fully expanded Carthage, and my reinforcements were bugged, stuck in the edge of the water, and spawing half strength, because half my men were killed by the bug. Even their most recent release on Rome 2 is a fiasco.
CA seems to be going down a path of making eye-candy games that are nice to watch only so to fetch a high price, but as games, they are completely unplayable, useless, and sometimes even a downright pain to experience and always struggling to make them work..
Please please wait for release of China total war. because something tells me you will be downright disappointed. These people don't seem to want to learn any lesson, the only way to hurt them is with money.

Rome 2 had so many problems and could be so much better i agree with that, but how about is still one of the most played TW games? Devs are still updating it because of the large player base. You wanna hate something? Fine, but do it in silence without saying bullshits

Totally not messing about here. I have an idea for an RTS that will change the way all RTS’s are played forever more. Iv been sitting on this idea for 20 years. I don’t have any programming skills and I don’t know how to protect my idea from being stolen? Because it would be.
Iv spoke to Developers 15-20 years ago who said the technology isn’t there yet for what your suggesting.. but now it is!
This idea came to me when I was first playing Dune2000, it is quite ironic that the game Dune2 was the first real RTS that we all know today. It changed everything.. my idea will do the same.
If there is a small development team out there that would like to work with me we could make gaming history. watch out Starcraft I’m gunning for you.

I recently checked out Unsung Story Kickstarter page and the new developer has made a lot of progress on the game. It kinda looks promising, maybe it can make the list upcoming tactics list one day.
I still can't believe microsoft hired relic to develop AoE4, DoW3 was a disaster.
Yeah it was, but if you look into it, you can also understand why they tried it. Older Dawn of Wars were generally a hit, but mostly a hit within the niche of people already interested in the WH40K universe, so it generally had small but very strong user bases (I mean, I still play Dawn of war 2 and 1), but they simmer out and there aren't many new players at a specific point.
What they tried to do, was make a game that was more accessible, with mechanics that weren't as punishing as Dawn of War 2, but also not as simple as Dawn of War 1... On top of that, they tried to create a game that was ready for an e-sports market, opening up to a whole new set of players.
This all backfired, not only was the game bad in a competitive sense, predictable and so basic, that most matched played out in the same general way, with the same units being built and used with little variation. It also alienated the crowd interested in a real WH40K experience, being disappointing with how loose it really played with the lore and how the mechanics worked with that lore in mind. So suddenly, they had no casual players, no new players and no wh40k fan players to call too, because everyone had their own grievances with the game.
It would have been received better if it wasn't a DOW game and wasn't placed in the WH40K universe.
Yeah, it was a disaster, but I do think Relic can make good games and there's a good chance they won't take such risks with AoE4, but that's my opinion on the matter.
Reich entertainment will do excellent for MS. All welcome AoE4:BSOD :D

COH2 is dog shit bruh. there is dlc literally for DLC. that game is fucking awefull. relic deliberately balances their new patches to sell dlc. all the new factions always come out extremely op. sorry but you dont know what your talking about. theres a reason coh2 has a gillion bad reviews. relic is awful.

Panzercorps was good but you could have easily cheat your way through it, because of the dice system, so when important units were clashing and you didn't like the result of the dice roll, you just had to reload the save game before the fight and could have done it till you got the result in your favour. I had to do this a couple of times with some unrealistic results. 2 plans vs 6 plans, and the result was 1 and 1 left alive...
Mostly looking forward to Total War: Three Kingdoms. I'm a huuuuge fan of the total war franchise (except Thrones haha)
Oh man, Ai War2, as someone who loved the first ai war and has the whole game, I can't wait for it. AI war was such a unique game and so much fun to play co-op, I can't wait!

@@seanpoole6025 Sure, DoWIII is well optimized...at the expense of everything else. And I'm still worried about AoEIV. Despite the fact that Relic has multiple dev teams, and it happened that DoWIII was done by an inexperienced team, this still makes me concerned.
Well the announcement video came out last year and we have yet to hear any news. I really hope that means they are putting a lot of time into it. But honestly it doesn't matter who is working on AOE4 the chances of it being a big hit are super low. They have a huge name to live up to.

what I would love to see is RTS with environment that will react to your actions, with floods and tornados and landslides when you cut down all trees on the hill. With resources not just on some little spots but with large mountains in which you will have to dig to find iron or gold or whatever and then build mines and tunnels under that mountain, where you could literally mine out the whole hills for your resources, not just building mines and looking on some number gettin lower so you have to build another mine and wait till it's also empty. I want large maps that are alive, not just textures and trees, maps where you can build towns and villages and connect them into an empire and where the battles of large armies could change the entire look of map. I know that there are games that has some of this aspects and I know it's not easy to make RTS that will be really perfect with everything I mentioned and maybe we are not there yet with PC performance but who knows, maybe one day...

My perfect, Grand Strategy, PDS style. The more complex, the better. I don't care for multiplayer other than coop campaigns with friends. A game like Europa Universalis IV is my ideal.
Some of these look fantastic, hope the gameplay will be as good. Especially AoE IV(!), didn't like the 3rd very much so still stuck in 2nd :/
Well not really, 2nd is the one to go for a "real" Age of Empires game, but I've also been playing Age of Empires online for a while now. Played it back when Microsoft had it up and running, it was shut down 2014 but has been revived by the community with Project Celeste. I've got the impression that a lot of people don't know about it being back up, which is a damn shame because it's actually a very good game. I can recommend it to anyone who likes RTS games.
I'm here just wanting a definitive edition for Age of Mythology or better yet.. A sequel. Have yet to find a game that can scratch the same myth itch.
Adding to the pile of 40k tactics games, there is also Battlefield Gothic: Armada 2 (though I guess it could fit in the 'space' category as well).

I loved the first Knights of Honor, a part two would be awesome. But what i´m really looking for is a Sins of a solar empire 2 (With a Star Trek Armada 4 Mod xD) and something like Supreme Commander (No, not Planetary Annihiliation).
Im mostly excited about imperator rome. I have played alot of pdx games but I am pretty sure this will be my favorite. It will bring back total war rome nostalgia but in 4x gameplay. Rome2 was a horrific disapointment to me. The imperator rome mechanics will be interesting even tho its familiar from the other games.
Something like crusader kings 2 but implementation of city building and more like total war combat... Or even stellaris just to make it more visually appealing
The Settlers and Iron Harvest looks fun!
Next year seem to be quite alot of Age of Sail based games.
