I love the moment at 22:57 where Heather aims up slightly and both of your arrows are perfectly parallel, and land right next to each other in the yellow
Hello Jake Yesterday shot for the first time since early January here in the UK due to Covid restrictions, I cant even hold my bow up for more than ten arrows without shaking. I did nothing during lockdown to maintain my strength and now I can see that what I was good at before is not so good now. First thing is to build up your strength before you try any kind of tuning. You hold so still. Anybody watching you that is plain to see. If you cannot do that then you are either overbowed or out of practice. You can`t shoot straight with a shaking bow arm and a moving head. So impressive to see a guy holding a 47 pound bow with zero shake zero movement. Now I see what it takes to shoot straight.
Thank you both for a really encouraging and informative video. She/Her/My Wife/H[eath]er is bringing out your best coaching, and the dialogue between you - while you do "newbie learns barebow" - makes this channel totally unique and hugely valuable. But Jake - never forget that "Heather" beats she/her/my wife every time 👍
I've struggled with the rotation too but what finally made it click for me was sort of an implementation of the "movement over muscles" concept. I often couldn't get into consistent alignment when I focused on the rotational movement itself, but when I instead started thinking of it as pushing my bow arm towards the target while moving my draw shoulder behind me going to set-up, the rotation happened automatically and my alignment as well as my overall body stability improved dramatically.
The changes you recommended to Heather came at the right time... they are new so yes, a bit mechanical still but she has been shooting long enough to have a firm enough grasp on the fundamentals to incorporate them... she looks so much more natural and clean through the shot already. The changes also set her up with much more stability at full draw which will be a huge benefit to her while aiming for 50m. But most importantly, she can tell it is working for her and that positive outlook will lead to her to settling into the new shot even faster. She will do great at the 50m shoot with a couple more weeks of practice! Thanks for sharing the progress and glad the arrows worked for her! GL to you both at the shoot!
brilliant video. I think the best advice is to figure out which 1 thing to focus on. Thats such a key thing for me, or I end up spiralling down rabbit holes and make no progress.
Very enjoyable video. Many thanks. Well done again Heather on shooting so well at 50m. It will be very interesting how you both get on in the forthcoming comp. Could you remind me please on the limb weight of Heather’s bow. Fairly light I believe.
Thank you so much for this series, Jake & Heather! I am also new to barebow and I am learning so much from following Heather’s progress. Wish I were in the area and could come shoot with you. I was the only female barebow in the last shoot in my area too. Good luck!
At 3:26 - that's a fine singing voice I heard, but Jake's speaking, and Heather's lips aren't moving so I'm thanking the neighbor's dog for continuing the input to this fine channel, of cats, chickens and (under)dogs - 'cuz no dog has yet made it on-screen 😊
Great to see Heather shooting. Well done. Just one small thing I noticed, Heather tends to move her head towards anchor, rather than the string hand anchor coming to her head. Best to keep the head very still in one position. Just an observation. Great honest videos.
Great improvement Heather! And in such a short time. Good follow through is already happening by itself now. But that elbow can come further down still. You are still pushing your chest out to help your back muscles. More lawnmower pullback action. You still lift your bow too high before pulling back. Try keeping your arrow tip under the gold. Because you end up still having to 'fight' the bow vertically when at full draw. As your upper back is more engaged than your lower.
I was an instinctive shooter and snap shooter and was pretty good. I dint bother with consistent anchor points or consistent anything I just shot fast and furiously. At 20 yds I could destroy the centre of a target. Then I started buying more expensive equipment and decided to try string walking and aiming . It was an enormous struggle! At one point I was using a compound release to stop releasing instantly. Your brain tells you one thing but your subconscious takes over. Still not convinced I did the right thing
I was just watching and noticed that you use the tip of your nose to help set your head. Heather on the other hand doesn't look to have a solid contact point for the string to touch to help with head alignment. Form changes are hard but worthwhile , good luck at your upcoming tournament.
One thing that I'm noticing (and I'm sure you'll see/you saw when you watched this: most of the time, when Heather hits high, it's either her elbow dropping low or her hand drifting down her cheek. When she hits low, it's because she's losing back-tension. I think it often goes left because she tried to compensate for the loss of tension by pushing with the bow arm.
Great videos of you both. Thank you! I use a lot of those to teach technique in my childrens recurve lessons. (working as a non professional just experienced archer to give some 20 children some advice in recurve technique for 3D archery.). As i see you Heather having a slightly more hips rotation as probably wanted (17:55) , i would suggest to try a bit closer feet position (left foot 3-4 cm forward). I have made the experience that for some archers it is easier to concentrate on shoulder rotation when there is not such a big "body twist" at full draw. Furthermore it seems for me that there is an angle less than 180 between draw hand and right forearm (11:55). You first straighten your wrist shortly before full draw. This could be already done better when setting your bow hand and grip. This would also make shoulder rotation easier in my opinion, as you wouldn't have to correct your wrist angle at the same time.
It's great to see the development esp. being new to archery as well! One thing I notice was Heather's tendency to grip the bow immediately on release, even though she has her finger sling on. I was taught to let it flow as part of follow-through and that gripping it on release for fear of dropping the bow also affected the shot. Any thoughts on this? Fantastic to see her intent, focus and confidence in her form as well!
Jake must probably be a little observant of her anchor point! so it doesn't so her alignment of the string moves to the left! Then she hits to the right and vice versa.
I'm surprised how shooting Barebow is more fun! Glad you have videos about this. How do you like the MXT-10 foam? I'm debating between the wood or foam.
Hi jake i found if I have a list of things to check as they are in order would this method help heather as she has a good memory for order unfortunately I often miss some things in the sequence good luck
Hey Heather, Love your enthusiasm for archery, or for being with Jake none the less :) Are you familiar with practice of being Mindfull? Im asking because what you project in this video (to me atleast) is submindfulness. I'd like to suggest working more on the mindset. Looking at the physical there are room from improvements (dont we all have it?) But the mindset seems to me, to pull you apart. Sure you are positive and lovely. But you are a real TOUGH judge on your own performance as a whole. Yes, there are room for improvements in the physical part. But I think so too in your mental process. Analyse the shot, but dont judge it good or bad as youre on the line. Shot has been shot. You cant fix that. But you can fix the mentality between the shots. just a few thoughts, Dont judge. Just analyse. Rinse / repeat Happy shooting, Helge from Denmark
Try Victory 3DHV's if you want a lighter arrow and more speed. They're wickedly fast. Looks like heather might've kicked your ass had she gone through years of training with KL.
You forgetting the "Thing with the hand" reminded me of many famous musicians who always record their playing so they do not lose great new riff ideas the next day. You need to consider yourself a musician and tape all your practice sessions.
Hi Jake is your anchor the same at 18m as it is at 50m? If i keep my anchor the same then the string is not touching my nose the same at 18 as it does at 50m.
Correct, I keep it the same. The nose position should be the same, unless you are changing your head position slightly from the different bow arm positions.
If you have an open to the public archery club start there to get a feel for the form & bow draw weight, 20lbs is a tough draw if you never shot before. This will give you a better idea what to look for & understand what you may want in your first set up. Don't go too high on the draw weight for the sake of appearences, it can create bad form in trying to draw it back and make it unpleasant to shoot. If you want to shoot a Barebow & string walk like Jake & Heather, start with an Olympic recurve ILF riser matched with the ILF limb & poundage suited for your level. The string will be based off of the limb & riser height. Add two nocs on the string leveled with your arrow rest. Buy the wrap around arrow rest with the thicker wire & good plunger. Don't go cheap on these, get the better quality as they will transfer with your upgrades & you'll be one & done with the cost. Get the cheaper carbon arrows tho($6 or less an arrow) to start but matched to your draw weight & arm length. Arrows will be lost or broken so don't go expensive on these to start but matching them will make a big difference on how you shoot. Jake has other vids that discuss all of this but unfortunately, it's not all inclusive to one vid...yet.😖 Landcasterarchery.com👍will get you started on the equipment for your level, budget at least $500 for a decent medium level bow, a good quiver & finger tab set up. 🏹 Hope this will help.😊
@@kajala11 mamy thanks Jayne. Currently I'm an olimpic style archer. I have a SF riser and economic ILF limbs (Kinetic) 30" but I reach 37" thanks ti my draw. Economic plunger too... Plus all the olimpic stuff. Carbon One Arrow (600 spine for 30.75" never cut.)
@@kajala11 Yes, it's closer to my idea of archery. Going in the Woods and shoot arrows (3D or HF) without aiming trought the scope. Ok, not like traditional archery but more accurate than olimpic. And, in case of zombie invasion i Will properly use a bow.
@@Drakkar983 I can think of a few other invasions I'd use a bow for!😏 Nevertheless, barebow shootings only technical is the plunger & a small front weight(s) no longer than 1.5 inches. Your anchor will change from your Olympic recurve shooting tho.🤔

Hi Jake and Heather. I noticed that the cap flap sometimes touches the string, which causes an head movement. Do you use the cap flap as an extra reference point?
no, but she moves her head to move the cap out of the way. The sun is brutal here in Florida at times. Its 100% required here, and bucket hats aren't our style. Small things to fix as time goes on.
