Bare shaft tuning a bow for the first time can seem intimidating but I share expertise to a new archer on how simple bare shaft tuning can be.

Excellent! This was a MASTER CLASS in beginner step-by-step tuning... Heather's questions and your explanations of how and why changing different characteristics will affect tune were perfect for a new to understand and follow along with. No doubt this will take a lot of the fear, stress and apprehension out of the process for new 's trying to get a handle on tuning. Truly a fantastic and valuable piece of archery content that will help many!

Hi Jake, This video is very old - just over a year now, but I wanted to thank you for making this series. Although I am currently working on a trad setup, a lot of the information (specifically this video) has really helped to fine tune my equipment. I am working toward getting a barebow setup in the near future and will be able to apply even more of your videos there as well. Once again, just wanted to say thank you for your help and information provided. - Mike
This is an excellent video material to learn about barebow tuning. Heather's questions helped a lot in clearing up some of the things I wanted to ask. This is what I've been searching for, as it shows the specifics, i.e., in numbers the effects on of:
(a) Reducing the weight of the arrow point in increments of 10gns
(b) Reducing the length of the shaft in increments of 1" will have an equivalent effect of 1 spine change stiffer.
(c) Reducing the draw weight by 0.5 turn
Only after going through all the above will, I start making adjustments with my plunger.
How I wish this video was created much earlier. It could have saved me money buying so many arrows of different spines.

What an absolutely fantastic video. I'm just getting started and your channel, and this series in particular, has been incredibly valuable. It's clear that Jake's knowledge runs deep but having Heather on board really brings in the beginners perspective. Her questions are so good and well timed that she's able to bring the most out of Jake. You two are a fantastic team. I have been following you for the last couple of weeks and I have to say are an excellent instructor. Everything to make reference to, just stays in my mind.
My goodness! there are so many things to consider. I understand a lot with your vids. Thanks for all your time and your CLEAR explanations. As to me, I need to keep up practicing and I can se that my technique has greatly improved.
The most enjoyment I got was teaching my three girls how to shoot a compound bow for three D . I knew I had trained them well when they always place in the top three . As they got older they lost interest but we all had a good time . This is a great family sport !

You guys rock! Thanks for all the incredibly useful information. I’ve been watching you since the beginning of my archery journey last spring starting with recurve and moving onto traditional and longbow. Your barebow anchor video helped the most. I struggled with a higher anchor than the typical under the chin used in Olympic recurve. The idea of anchoring next to my tooth just seemed wrong after studying the KSL shot cycle. I have found behind my jawbone with my thumbs rear knuckle shoved in the pocket under my ear lobe works for me. The sensitive pressure point deters me from collapsing with my thumb knuckle pressed in there. Any forward movement in my anchor hand (collapse) causing a very slight uncomfortable pain sensation, almost like behavioral shock treatment haha! Thanks Jake and Heather you are a wonderful addition to the videos!

Jake that's another GREAT video! It's so nice to see it through a beginners eyes! As a newbie myself, it has been frustrating seeing tuning videos using expert or accomplished archers. They make it look so easy that you come away thinking all you have to do is go out there and tune and you'll be shooting nearly as good as them. This video helps understand the expectations a beginner should have with bst - and Heather was better than most beginners I know. Again, thanks!
Great video Jake. Great to see Heathers progress and interesting her comments near the end about having a coach always with her. I am in a similar situation having taught my partner to shoot over past 14 months. Although we were unable to shoot due to COVID lockdowns over about 5 months in that time her progress has been fantastic, to the point where she is beating far more experienced women in her age group. A lot of people do not realise how valuable having a regular coach can be. Our experience suggests that having someone regular critiquing form, offering advice etc can make a huge difference to a new archers progress.

Tuning teaches you a lot about how the whole system works. I actually enjoy it. One thing that I've always wondered about is the initial plunger setting. Medium spring, medium tension. I've had to crank a plunger spring pretty far in as a last resort to get a temporary tune. Thanks for the content!!

Hello Jake, I am a year late as I shot my first bare shafts today (noob western style archer here), and I have to say this series is amazing. The synergy between you two is what makes it so much worth it: you are incredibly taught and a great expert at what you do, while Heather is a genuine newbie with so many honest questions to ask, giving you the counterpart of the true beginner, and forcing you to explain everything you know from the very foundations up. Amazing. Also, it warms the heart to see how fondly you two look at each other, you look like a really lovely couple :)

this was exactly my experience without having the expert to explain to me with certainty what actualy happens, it was like a bad nightmare. but now we know better dont we... Its amazing that you also show where to say stop, based on time constrain given she has a competition, the ability of the archer which is super anyway and that it risks changing too much given they allready fly much much better! - you can teach common sense!
This was a great video and an example of how things can be out of tune and you don't see it right away. I don't shoot Bare bow. But I shoot trad with heavy arrows and a high FOC with a fixed crawl. And tune is so important.

This video reminds me of a Hoyt Target Compound I was shooting back in the 90's. It had a serious vibration problem and I discovered the Limb bolts had backed out on their own, so it was way out of tune. But I was still hitting the 122cm Target at 90M. Although the groups were terrible.

I do find if your not careful with barebow, when you shorten your arrows when you do field on close targets it can get hard to see down the arrow but long shots work well.

If i may give just a technical suggestion, if you could increase the volume of the talking parts in the editing so we don't have to increase our device' volume too much so when the ads come in, their volume won't blow us over. With Australia traditional archery, we are not allowed to string walk. It all instinctive shooting. If you or one of your followers can give some tips ,that would be great,. Been very interesting and informative so far with bow and arrows setups, and keep the good work going,.

Great video again - when Heather stated that shooting the bare shafts was pretty nerve racking for her, I think it showed that having (or not having) confidence in the shot leads to good (or bad) results. No one wants to miss the bale., lose an arrow etc... and the added pressure of being on camera while shooting compounds the issue. It should help her confidence in the long run though and make it a little easier when standing on a shooting line. She shoots the fletched shafts really well, I think that no more changes and get some time behind the bow is the right prescription for now and good luck to both of you at your tournament!
One thing I learnt from trying to tune break off points is that as the point gets shorter it increases the arrow length so you do not get that much of a change in dynamic spine because the longer arrow slightly decreases the spine offsetting the increase from the reduction in point weight.
I was about to say the same. Narrow diameter arrows have the point length longer per grain than a wider arrow. So slimmer arrows in my experience do not benefit as much from breaking weight off and in extreme examples could even worsen a weak arrow.
Great thing is though, you can take advantage of this if you can get the right components. I set my black eagle x-impacts up with a custom 195 grain tungsten point with only 1 inch internal length. Let me have the widest possible range to cut them back for tune, put them in a weight range I liked, and gives me massive FOC for the wind.

I shoot an ILF traditional bow and screw-in points on my arrows. It made bare shaft tuning a breeze by playing with draw weight for major adjustments and switching points to fine tune it. I don't have to resort to cutting arrows.
I am really glad to see you are doing these beginning videos. Where I live there are very few people to help beginners with barebow. I have had to learn totally on my own how to tune. I never made much headway until I found you on TH-cam and bought your book on tuning which was my saving grace. My scores have improved a lot. Still have a ways to go but I am now waiting for this pandemic to get under control so I can start competing in barebow. I have hunted with recurves and longbows since 1978. Barebow is different from hunting bows.

Break off points are insteresting as they make the shaft "longer" when one breaks off weight segments. That is, as one breaks off these segments more of the shaft is allowed to flex, offsetting the effect of the ligther point to some extent, depending on the relative length of the arrow (a shorter arrow should be more affected than a longer one).
Especially with nano or 3.2 ID arrows as the point stem and each breakoff section is long compared to larger diameter shafts. I recently attempted to tune my barebow and abandoned point adjustment as it seemed to have a reverse effect
@@adrianyee2634 Good observation, yes those segments are really long on the super thin arrows.
I guess the breakoff points are best to be used from a FOC perspective and then one has to consider spine from that. However in my case I have some different points which portrude different amounts infront of the shaft e.g., the Skylon/Avalon points for their 700/600 spine 4.2mm arrows which have two different sets of break off points i.e., 100/120 grain, which the latter portrude more in front of the shaft than the former.
This however effects the total length of the arrow so one has to take that into account. Bottom line is that points are for FOC and such. However I use points to modify effective spine with trad arrows (6.2mm screw in points) often as it is very convinient and I just adapt to whatever it does to FOC and trajectory.

I thought it would be a very interesting video a while ago and seeing the slow-motion of the arrow just reminded it to me. I'd like to have advices on good video setup. I too often have to train myself alone due to my timetables though I'm in a club so it could help to setup something. I'm a bit affraid of the budget, I have no clue where to place de camera/phone, nor how, ... I heard about instant replay app but on what screen, aso... I think there are so many things to explain you could even make a series out of it and why not call for sponsorship to compare products aso.

Really GREAT video describing all the thoughts during tuning, and even the curve balls. But Jake man, just buy her the next stiffer spine! She's got the technique to justify it and you chose cheaper shafts for a reason!
I find that being setup slightly weak (about 3-4" at 18m) gives me the best grouping. I'm not sure if this has to do with FOC the weight of fletching, or because of where I put my string blur, but a perfect tune tends to give me worse left/right grouping.
Great Barebow tuning content! I'd really like to see more of your Q&A type of videos as it tends to reveal much more of your tacit knowledge! One question though: Beside point weight, arrow length and bow weight, wouldn't be adjusting center shot (at least to a certain degree) another option for compensating a too weak / stiff arrow (turning center shot more inwards for a too stiff arrow and more outwards for too weak arrows)?
Not center shot, but plunger tension. Although that is a last resort, especially with barebow.
arrows with plastic plumage are more rigid dynamically, since the knocking point is much heavier, unlike the bare shaft, so it is necessary to weigh the shaft with tape to the weight of three feathers - then the dynamic spine will be adequate to the feathered ones
