It’s actually a misnomer, the whole 06 being a reboot thing. It’s a misunderstanding that become popular accepted fact, born from an interview Yuji Naka gave to video game outlet at the time (I think it was IGN please feel free to fact check me on that) where he compared this game to two movies at the time, Spider-Man 3 and The Dark Knight. Now The Dark Knight was a reboot for the Batman movies at the time, but Spider-Man 3 is obviously a sequel and not a reboot. What he was trying to get across, and what was lost in translation over the years in one long game of telephone, was that 06 was supposed to be the biggest and best Sonic game that they’ve worked on, and that they had (planned) released up to that point. It was never supposed to be a reboot, just a really big large scale game that was intended to be so much more, but Christmas couldn’t wait, and neither could SEGA management. Looking at their fiscal year I suppose I can see why they couldn’t, same applies to the massive money sink the game already was, and how it was essentially two games mashed into one. The unreleased cancelled game about a psychic character with physics based gameplay revolving around the new Havok engine. And the Sonic game planned for that year. They didn’t want to throw away all the work and money they had put into the other game, so that’s why Silver exists at all. ‘06 is a fascinating rabbit hole, and I haven’t even scratched the surface. Don’t get me started on the behind the scenes mismanagement, or the internal politics which threatened the game’s production. Either way, I’ve been anticipating this remake since you mentioned you were doing them, especially given you recently showed off the thumbnail for the video. I could tell it wasn’t long until we got it. This was always going to be a tall task, but I think you’ve done pretty well, and it’s definitely an improvement on the original video. Which while still good, lacks a lot of the small things your newer videos don’t.
I think part of the confusion around Sonic 06 being a reboot or not stems from the fact that the language at the time was a bit more limited than it is now; imo 06 could almost perfectly be defined as a “soft reboot,” a piece of media in a pre-existing franchise that still follows the pre-existing continuity, but generally tries to distance itself a bit from it to be more accessible to newcomers, but that term didn’t really start becoming popular until the mid-2010s when the Star Wars sequel trilogy started with The Force Awakens. If Sonic ‘06 came out 10 years later, I’m almost certain that’s how Sonic Team would’ve described what they were going for. P.S. This is going to be a big ol’ nitpick, but the movies Yuji Naka was comparing Sonic 06 to in that interview were Batman Begins and Spider-Man 2, not their sequels The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 3, which wouldn’t come out until 2 years or so after Sonic 06. At 1:21:04 it seems to be an unfinished render of Elise's character model. The reason why I believe it's unfinished is mainly because the character model itself is pre-rendered in it's default A-Pose. Possibly, no rig is there for posing, considering that the hair texture is unfinished or being unused in this render.
The "realistic" models are also for the pre-rendered cutscenes by Blur studio, that's why they are of such high quality. They're not supposed to be found in the game since they were only made for the cinematics
Probably my favorite unused stuff in this game are the Rainbow Gem, Super Hard mode, Metal Sonic being playable (likely by collecting all of the medals), and music tracks from previous games being buyable in the shop. Also, two unused ideas that did get used in the Very Hard DLC were Sonic playing through the Ruins area of Tropical Jungle and Silver having to fight Eggman robots in Crisis City.

40:03 I could be very wrong, but Sonic's voice clip here - Sonic: "It looks like Dr. Eggman is after the Chaos Emeralds again. Shadow, we're in this one together." - "Again." "Again." The last time Dr. Eggman was searching for the Chaos Emeralds was in Sonic Adventure 2, working with Shadow. ( I could be wrong about that, too. Maybe Dr. Eggman was searching for them in Shadow the Hedgehog ( 2005 ). ) In Sonic Heroes, Dr. Eggman couldn't search for them because 1.) Dr. Eggman was locked up by a rouge and rebellious Metal Sonic. ( Neo Metal Sonic ) 2.) Literally, the Chaos Emeralds we're flying and racing to the Goal Ring in the Special Stages. In Shadow the Hedgehog ( 2005 ), The Black Arms came to Earth, and Black Doom wanted Shadow to collect the Chaos Emeralds so Black Doom can have them for himself. And in Sonic Rush, The Chaos Emeralds pulled off a more stylish and groovy Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Also, "Shadow, we're in this one together." I like this one. I can see why they removed the wind safety net. For a demo that will be new for every, yay good way to help the player. But as a level tours the end of the game, the player “should” be confident in the movement to not need it. “Should”.
the animation seen when interacting with the wind object is actually used in the final game the game plays it at a faster speed when you die from touching a kill plane (falling into a pit, water, etc.)
19:00 Isn't that model used in Shadow's story? There's a moment where he has to light up a fountain to recreate the Scepter, in preparation for his rematch with Mephiles. Picking up the Scepter is what triggers that infamous outtake from the GUN Agent!

At 46:04, there probably would have been a point where Sonic would have had to save a bunch of townspeople. Maybe there could have been a mission in hub area, or the first train in Radical Train could have had people on it.
Spark the electric jester 2 and 3 share some 06 inspired ed elements, such as the difference in level completion objects, the jump roll and unrolling as well as the no delay jester dash.

It looks like Sonic '06 was going to have co-op but due to time constraints it got cut down and the Amigos was a compromise. Does explain why in some stages and the hub world the other characters just follow you and not do anything
I’m playing sonic 06 for the first time I’m 50 percent done with Sonic’s campaign and I’ve barely run into any glitches the most annoying thing is just the camera but other than that it’s been a fun play through I’m playing on 360 so idk if that helps or not
they need to remaster and reimagine 06 in 2026 for the 20 year anniversary, i genuinely think with all the potential it had there's a chance it could've been the best sonic game of all time
i wonder what the writers had planned for the original story of this game to be, it seems more intereting than any sonic game story, too bad we might never know
Fantastic video. I played this game as a kid at the time it came out, and had a lot of fun with it, so I hold it with special regard for that, but now as an adult, I can see objectively why the game is terrible, which is fine. Getting to learn more about it's history is something I'll always be interested in. And this makes me sad, man. So much potential wasted, all because it just HAD to be released for the 15th anniversary. Seriously, fuck that shit. They should have waited another year. Luckly, we have Project 06 proving that this game could have been amazing.
Those screams are probably meant for radical train, cause in Sonic version of the stage, he is trying to save civilians who are trapped in the train in a collision course to explosive crates
Thanks for this! Since the gems are fully functional in the Xbox Live demo, do they drain the action gauge as intended? I also wonder if the platinum hits version is based on this demo.
SCU at release did lag less if you removed all unused files. Older games are weird in the sense that even if a lot of files are unused, if you remove them some stuff will stop working
It would not, no, not because of dependencies, but because the whole reason the game lags and slows down is two fold: a) the normal level renderer is kind of weird and not optimized well, and this can be mitigated by using patches to turn of TSAA b) the loading times themselves is because of how loading the levels themselves work. It's usually because the object layouts are often SO big and 06 loads the ENTIRE stage at once, NOT as chunks. The stage itself does NOT cull out or have LOD applied, so the same model is loaded the entire time, even for inaccessible areas. It's partially why the draw distance is so low sometimes as well, keep the amount of objects loaded to reduce lag and load times.
40:40 As an avid ‘06 enjoyer for its story like the adventure games (Sonic shenanigans but taken completely seriously with real world stakes. Kinda like dragon ball vibes) I am literally gripping my head in shock with my jaw dropped truly how much is missing. I know I’m partially bias. But think about it. This video is almost 2 hours. I promise you if I enjoy so much of what we actually got, imagine if this 2 hours of cut content was in the game? This would be the best Sonic game of all time, and I really hope they try something like this (Adventure style) again in the future given his newfound extreme popularity due to the movies. With that popularity, give Dev’s the proper budget and time to pull this off Please Sega ❤❤

Spark the electric jester 2 and 3 share some 06 inspired ed elements, such as the difference in level completion objects, the jump roll and unrolling as well as the no delay jester dash.
Listening at max volume and 46:09 scared me for a sec lol
Same, I glad I had headphones on. because whichever character is was SURELY didnt seem to sound like they were in danger lmao
@@zphoenix9693didnt sound like danger at all….
39:02 I've ALWAYS wondered where that one drum sample came from, i remember hearing it a lot in Ben 10, especially in "Ben 10: Protector of Earth" but i wasn't able to find where it originated from.
the unused tag team dialogue for sonic and shadow sounds like it'd be for the coolest level ever i'm so sad
Love these vids, its genuinely insane how much goes unused in 06 (especially voice lines lmao) keep up the great videos 👍
hey Cifesk bit late but great video!
luckily we have chaosx but dude imagine if they remade this game and were given a right amount of time to add EVERY SINGLE THING they intended to do for 06...
hi, I'd like to introduce you to a mod called Legacy of Solaris-
I was watching this waiting for sonic 06 to load on my ps3... this video finished first. I wish this was sonic 07 or 08 coulda been something amazing
The files from the XBLA demo are from later in development. This information is extremely relevant...
Some of them may be, but digging deeper into XBLA outside of what's shown shows it's actually far more of a mess than retail LOL
6:46 pretty late to this and I'm not sure if someone else said it but their logo seems to be on the US platinum Family Hits copy.
You know a game was rushed when it has 1 hour of unused content
1:20:43
Why does that look like an early version of Unleashed Sonic? I wonder if it was the bases for that design.
Epic video
1:17:08 aint no way they went from elise being voiced by Ash Ketchum, to Meg Griffin
Finally we got that Sonic 2 Bonus video. (SA2 edition) /j
06 is so good i love hearing about the game its my favorite
It looks like Sonic '06 was going to have co-op but due to time constraints it got cut down and the Amigos was a compromise.
Does explain why in some stages and the hub world the other characters just follow you and not do anything
Hustun had some pretty interesting dialogue in the XBLA Demo
Sonic 06 sure is a video game (not necessarily a good one but one with a lot of cut content)
Man, 06 could have been something special. It's sad.
Goated video
52:03
secret rings victory animation?
I’m playing sonic 06 for the first time I’m 50 percent done with Sonic’s campaign and I’ve barely run into any glitches the most annoying thing is just the camera but other than that it’s been a fun play through I’m playing on 360 so idk if that helps or not
Tbh neither have I experienced many game breaking issues with it, it's just everything else that leaves a lot to be desired
@@Cifeskyeah that’s a fair point lol
1:19:36
why didn’t they use this idea, i like it a lot
they need to remaster and reimagine 06 in 2026 for the 20 year anniversary, i genuinely think with all the potential it had there's a chance it could've been the best sonic game of all time
i wonder what the writers had planned for the original story of this game to be, it seems more intereting than any sonic game story, too bad we might never know
lets gooo!!
I mean...Iblis does kinda look like a shrimp...sorta
26:58 im the biggest silver fan ever and i didn't know that 😱😱😱😱
1:16:10
And uses text associated with Silver.
They have rct in their filename, which stands for Radical Train
The TGS version looks better to me! The world seemed so much bigger and the rail speed is pretty awesome to me
39:43 Reminds me of the dinner scene from Shrek 2
The cut night and day cycle reminds me of when kojima wanted to do that with mgs3 but couldn't due to the ps2s limitations
Thanks for this! Since the gems are fully functional in the Xbox Live demo, do they drain the action gauge as intended? I also wonder if the platinum hits version is based on this demo.
Who else remembers the Sonic 06 brick breaker flash game, that was childhood
I've always wondered:
If you were to take out all of the unused stuff from the game's files, would the game still lag and slow down ?
SCU at release did lag less if you removed all unused files.
Older games are weird in the sense that even if a lot of files are unused, if you remove them some stuff will stop working
It would not, no, not because of dependencies, but because the whole reason the game lags and slows down is two fold:
a) the normal level renderer is kind of weird and not optimized well, and this can be mitigated by using patches to turn of TSAA
b) the loading times themselves is because of how loading the levels themselves work.
40:40
As an avid ‘06 enjoyer for its story like the adventure games (Sonic shenanigans but taken completely seriously with real world stakes. Kinda like dragon ball vibes)
I am literally gripping my head in shock with my jaw dropped truly how much is missing.
With that popularity, give Dev’s the proper budget and time to pull this off
Please Sega ❤❤
22:05 shadow got caught in 4k 😂23:40😂
Sonic Heroes Suuuuuuuuucks
True. Also, isn't it interesting how every sonic heroes liker has played sonic heroes game in their childhood?
Just saying, I think sonic heroes enjoyers have a huge nostalgia for it and that's why they like it.
Heroes is my favourite of all time even when I play it to this day, I don't think your point makes any sense
27:37 Pretty Sure Shadow Is e-One Houndred And Silver e-Two Houndred
And Not One Thousand And Two Thousand
35:08 Pretty Sure Is .lub Not .lua , Unlike The Act Mission
@@ezequielin5058 yeah, I wrongly said "thousand" instead of "hundred"
.lub files are literally the same as .lua files so it doesn't matter
@@Cifesk Heh, Yeh I Know
Thanks For Replying Anyways
Good Video, By The Way
26:17 I checked and damn you weren't lying
Hell yeah
1:20:28
Through caves? Like in the final game.
This game got so many unused content with Better and Cool stuff was removed in Final Game makes the Gameplay even Worse & buggy
its been a year daddy
Great video! 06 truly is a tragedy like no other.
