For me, Jason and Ryan portrayed the “teenager with attitude and love of adventure” of Sonic perfectly. During the Adventure era, Sonic seemed to fit that mold. Sonic still has that attitude, and while I loved the performances of Ryan and Jason, it took a while for me to warm up to Roger’s Sonic. Roger sounded a bit deeper and felt like a Sonic that was a bit more mature as a seasoned hero by the time he’d voiced him. By the time of Frontiers, I’d accepted Roger’s Sonic, as for the longest time, Jason and Ryan’s voices as Sonic *was* Sonic to me. I still love how they’re both around to share stories about their roles as Sonic, as many fans loved some of the games from the 2000s to 2010s.
I thought Jason started off pretty bad as Sonic but I loved him as Sonic in Unleashed and Black Knight, shame they sacked him right as he was getting his groove as sonic. I always loved his Shadow though (although I do slightly prefer David Humphrey’s Shadow)

He embodies the character for me. It's a shame my favorite performance from him, Sonic Unleashed, was also his last for the character. Hope to see him reprise the role for fan service some time in the future ✊
i couldn't stand roger during the forces and generations games. just did not encapsulate sonic for me. jason always had that for me. he just understood the character well, but i will say, i absolutely loved rogers performance in frontiers
I don’t think Roger was bad at all. The problem was the voice direction he was given which was more comical in the Colors-Forces era. Frontiers shows that he can give Sonic a more mature voice and it just works better.
To me Roger is perfect for boom sonic, but always sounded off for regular modern sonic to me. Not for a lack of talent or bad direction (even though there was definitely bad direction for a while) I just don’t like Sonic having such a grown up nasally voice. I like his voice sounding more lively and carefree like Ryan and Jason who was my favorite
I like the origins of people developing their character voices. Jason Griffith got shadow from a corpse husband-esc smoking edgy writer of a roommate named Carl and Tom Kenny got spongebobs voice from an angry swearing midget dressed as an elf. Lol
Big props for Jason getting to voice Sonic in Super Smash Bros Brawl, and lots of respect for voicing every ending in Shadow the Hedgehog as well, he really put in the work!
The fact he can still do the voices years later with minimal differences is not only impressive, but way past cool. I grew up with Sonic X, Sonic Unleashed, Mario & Sonic, and Sonic & The Black Knight. These were my childhood Sonic games and they remain some of my favorites to this day (especially Sonic Unleashed). I always thought the same that Jason perfected the character voice by Sonic Unleashed and Black Knight. I'm glad to see he agrees that they let him go at his best. The great character writing and storytelling for Unleashed and Black Knight, propelled Jason's performance immensely. The storytelling, cinematic feel, and character arcs peaked with those games. It made it all the more sad that they ditched Jason in 2010. I still have a special place in my heart for almost all things Sonic related, even the stuff that came before and after Jason's work on the character. Not everything he worked on was perfect though. I think his performances in Shadow and 06 as Sonic leave a lot to be desired at some points. However, the stuff that Jason did work on and excelled left an impact on my life I never thought possible through voice acting. I really wish and believe that he was still the voice of Sonic & Shadow as just when Jason perfected the character voices he was swiftly replaced by an inferior Sonic voice. Not a bad one mind you and had some solid performances in some Sonic Media, but not nearly as good as Jason in his peak. I'm glad that these roles basically kick-started his career and that he has moved on to more roles in games and other media. He handled the hand off well, for that and his undeniable talent, I respect Jason.
34:23 Jameson was on a mission. Had him shaking and crying on the voice direction For Janko. They didn't even show him on the timestamp or Closed Captions LMAO.
I feel bad the jason got all that crap that came his way he got fired because 4kids had some problems but the fact that sega doesn't even seem to honor him is so sad i feel too bad for this man that he got so much hate and when he gets fire now people love him
It was the 2000's and people were only first discovering the internet and that they could say whatever they wanted on it aha. But as he said, it was only a matter of time before he got his time in the sun, once all the people who grew up with his voice got older.
Honestly it’s cool to hear that Jason meet Ryan but I’m surprised him and Roger never crossed paths. Wonder how prepared he was if people would of asked more questions regarding comparisons to Roger and if there would be anything he’d wanna tell him
Something he definitely misremembers is the evolution of Shadow's voice. If you go back and watch his scenes in Sonic X, Shadow legitimately sounds exactly like Sonic speaking dully. By the time he'd voiced a couple of games the two were very different in sound, you almost wouldn't guess they had the same voice actor.
So when Shadow first appears in Sonic X his voice sounds more like an evil Sonic voice, but by the time of the game Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow's voice sounds more like his own.
When I was kid I couldn’t even tell the difference between Ryan and Jason tbh. He was a great successor to Ryan, and while I’ve come to appreciate Roger as well, Jason and Ryan will always be favourites. Jason was really the best at portraying Sonic’s cockiness, and best at displaying Sonic’s moods overall. Hope we see him as Sonic again someday, he still got it
He can still do the Sonic voice quite well and Sega has been listening alot lately so fingers crossed we ever get to see Jason voicing Sonic or Shadow in a Sonic game again
I was one of the people who grew up with Jason as Sonic. Hearing his voice again by rewatching couple of stuffs he had roles on, I immediately melted like a butter. Felt like getting tucked into blanket as he talked to me to give me some comfort
I met Jason, in June. During Greater Austin Comic Con. He is SUPER NICE! I was very nervous, because Sonic X was technically my first introduction to the character of Sonic. And then I realized Jason also voiced Shadow. For that, I freaked out and it was last minute info for me 🔥 meeting him was for sure a dream come true. He signed my Shadow funko and Werehog funko. Even my Sonic Unleashed copy 💙 I did a small impersonation of his Sonic and said it was very good! I would’ve love to have converse with him all day, especially since I want to aspire to be a va. But of course there’s always a long line 😂 but overall, it was a sick experience and I really enjoyed the time I spent talking to the legend 😁 I hope to meet him again one day
Jason's sonic is naturally cool. Ryan sounds like he is trying to be cool. Jason's shadow is really great as well. Not too edgy but just the right amount of cocky and intimidating. It was a big mistake losing him.
I think Ryan’s sounded already cool but he gives an extra feel to try to be cool, Jason your right is naturally cool, Roger sounds relaxed with a few quips if taking frontiers, feels a bit forced in Forces, Lost World and Colors (even tho I like that game in particular)
Watching this made me giggle, but also it breaks my heart that he was replaced. I know everyone hates Sonic 06, but that game (and Unleashed/Black Knight) really showcases just how friendly and compassionate Sonic is, and how ready he is to help someone in need. Jason’s Sonic was the warmest voice we have had for Sonic, and kid me always felt like Sonic was a good friend. That, plus the quiet, stoic, but assured voice of Shadow was also great. Jason and Dan Green are two of the Sonic actors I’ve missed the most when they got replaced.
I'm genuinely glad Jason is still gainfully employed and getting work, he was my Sonic growing up and I'm eternally thankful for all the memories he gave me, thanks so much Jason!💙
I Watched Sonic X As Well and That Show Made Become a Bigger Fan of Sonic The Hedgehog After Playing The 2 Original Games on The Sega and The Later Games on The Nintendo GameCube and Nowadays It’s The PS3 and The PS4!
I remember Him talking about doing something rather secret sometime, It's a Stretch... but I really hope he Meant Sonic 3 as in Voicing Shadow because Istg that will make me cry
I loved his work in Unleashed and Secret Rings because of the raw emotions he would do for Sonic. So much so I felt a deep emotional connect with the character on the screen. It made me laugh or cry for Sonic when he was going through it. Thats why I love Jason.❤
With the Sonic X season 3 thing: It did actually get released in Japan when it was originally produced, but it's release was extremely limited with it primarily being available through video rental instead of being aired on TV like the first two seasons. 2020 was just when it got aired on TV
Such an incredible talent! Nice to hear the other side of the industry after growing up and loving all these voices! The way he just switches from Sonic, Werehog, and Shadow, mind blowing
Its so wonderful to see him go from being absolutely ridiculed for no reason to being praised and loved as the best voice of Sonic. This man deserves all the love ❤❤
Fun panel, I love how he's so devoted to having everyone's questiosn answered! Didn't know about the story how he got the voice for Shadow and Jet, that was hilarious haha
Jason seems like such a cool dude. Admittedly he’s not really my favorite voice for Sonic (he’s PERFECT for Shadow though!) but this entire panel was so entertaining to watch and I really want to hear more of his stories now. I’m glad that he’s doing well, such a childhood legend!
I'm glad someone commented on that as well. No need for that stuff there. Almost like he tried to create an awkward situation for an actor that wasn't even involved in that voice. That guy needed to just sit down and behave.
You can tell that even though some fans were cruel to him. He will still appreciate Sega for having him as Sonic and the other characters. He is the Sonic I grew up with and I think he was irreplaceable because he literally nailed the character. The current voice actor grew on me I think he is the adult version of Sonic and I like it. We have to appreciate it what we have now because one day we will miss them when they are gone

Nah.
I like the origins of people developing their character voices. Jason Griffith got shadow from a corpse husband-esc smoking edgy writer of a roommate named Carl and Tom Kenny got spongebobs voice from an angry swearing midget dressed as an elf. Lol
How is he an edgy writer
@mdtisthebest6249 not an edgy writer per say but an edgy guy who LIKES to write is what I mean
I hope he plays Shadow in the new Sonic movie
That would be a dream come true
Me too I want Jason Griffith to voice shadow he’s so freaking good
Agreed that would be so cool
It’s most likely never to happen, SEGA Fired Jason remember
I would die!!! That would be so damn cool!
15:30 Damn! That's hardcore asf, Jason really is the GOAT
respect
I feel bad the jason got all that crap that came his way he got fired because 4kids had some problems but the fact that sega doesn't even seem to honor him is so sad i feel too bad for this man that he got so much hate and when he gets fire now people love him
Society started to get slowly dirty in the late 2000s
It was the 2000's and people were only first discovering the internet and that they could say whatever they wanted on it aha. But as he said, it was only a matter of time before he got his time in the sun, once all the people who grew up with his voice got older.
SEGA I DAMAND YOU TO HIRE JASON GOD DAMN IT DO IT PLEASE HES SO GOOD
He holds such a special place in my heart, he’ll always be the best Sonic for me.
What a charismatic, genuine guy he seems like.
Honestly it’s cool to hear that Jason meet Ryan but I’m surprised him and Roger never crossed paths. Wonder how prepared he was if people would of asked more questions regarding comparisons to Roger and if there would be anything he’d wanna tell him
If Jet ever comes back, Sega better bring him back to voice that crazy bird.
I have to agree. He really comes into his own for shadow the hedgehog but in sonic x, I can clearly hear sonic while shadow is talking 😭
So when Shadow first appears in Sonic X his voice sounds more like an evil Sonic voice, but by the time of the game Shadow the Hedgehog, Shadow's voice sounds more like his own.
BEST Sonic and Shadow. Man, do we miss him😭
Believe Me, I Feel The Same Way. 😔
Jason was a legendary Sonic, but his Shadow was fucking GOAT
I know right every time when he does shadows voice all I can do is just smile he is shadow
@@Starrmonster02I Just love Latinas sonic
When I was kid I couldn’t even tell the difference between Ryan and Jason tbh. He was a great successor to Ryan, and while I’ve come to appreciate Roger as well, Jason and Ryan will always be favourites. Jason was really the best at portraying Sonic’s cockiness, and best at displaying Sonic’s moods overall. Hope we see him as Sonic again someday, he still got it
He can still do the Sonic voice quite well and Sega has been listening alot lately so fingers crossed we ever get to see Jason voicing Sonic or Shadow in a Sonic game again
I'm sorry, man, but Roger ain't it.
@@jasontoddler7680I think he did alright for boom sonic but normal sonic belongs to ryan or jason
@@supersmashmaster43 Agreed
Bring this man back, I miss his Sonic and Shadow so damn much it's unreal.
I was one of the people who grew up with Jason as Sonic. Hearing his voice again by rewatching couple of stuffs he had roles on, I immediately melted like a butter. Felt like getting tucked into blanket as he talked to me to give me some comfort
Hearing stories from people in the industry is always fascinating. I'm glad he shared with everyone!
Jason has always been the definitive voice of Sonic.
Jason aged well, I'm happy to see he's alright. Pretty interesting interview~
Ma boiii looks Jacked up 💪
Age hasn't slowed him down one bit.
Sad that Jason stopped working as Sonic's voice.
We all will miss him.
I Miss Jason Griffin Voicing Both Sonic and Shadow Big Time and I Discovered Him From The Show “Sonic X”!
Wish he'd get hired to play Shadow in the 3rd Sonic movie :(
I'm from the future, it's actually Keanu Reeves. 😥
@@mtkk_productionsit was impossible for Jason to be shadow since they want A List Actors
I love Roger but I really miss Jason. To me he always will be the voice of sonic when I hear him speak in my head.
Sega made a huge mistake by not keeping Griffith
Literally 3 characters in one VA
Well Mike said he just re-auditioned for Eggman and that's why he's still in the cast.
Maybe he had to move?
He's a devoted dad. I have high respects for him.
16:29 the werehog and darkspine sonic voice (both sound surprisingly similar)
But of course there’s always a long line 😂 but overall, it was a sick experience and I really enjoyed the time I spent talking to the legend 😁 I hope to meet him again one day
I wish I’ll meet him because I want to tell him to go back to voicing shadow because he’s so god damn good
Jason’s the GOAT
He is I want him to voice shadow in sonic movie 3 PLEASE JASON!!
Jason's sonic is naturally cool. Ryan sounds like he is trying to be cool.
Jason's shadow is really great as well. Not too edgy but just the right amount of cocky and intimidating.
It was a big mistake losing him.
Freaking love Ryan's Sonic, he basically perfected the character by Heroes. But man, Jason just...IS Sonic. I miss him dearly!!
I feel like Ryan’s was actually naturally cool. Roger is the one, like in Sonic Colors, that was definitely trying too hard.
I think Ryan’s sounded already cool but he gives an extra feel to try to be cool, Jason your right is naturally cool, Roger sounds relaxed with a few quips if taking frontiers, feels a bit forced in Forces, Lost World and Colors (even tho I like that game in particular)
I love how well he can transition between voices. Every time I heard him do the Sonic or Shadow voice, part of me felt like a kid again. I was in awe.
I was born in the Roger era but ever since I watched Sonic X on Netflix, this has been Sonic for me
For some reason, I want him to voice Shadow in the third Sonic movie.🙏🏻
"We weren't selling zits, we were trying to get rid of them." 😂
I'm genuinely glad Jason is still gainfully employed and getting work, he was my Sonic growing up and I'm eternally thankful for all the memories he gave me, thanks so much Jason!💙
Imo he was the best voice for Sonic and Shadow his performance in Sonic 06 is one of the reasons why it’s my favorite sonic game
I met Jason Anthony Griffith at Ninja Exchange. SUPER nice guy. I hope he's doing well for himself.
He is truly the Best Sonic of all time. Especially because of Sonic X I grew up watching it on every Saturdays 4K kids TV
I Watched Sonic X As Well and That Show Made Become a Bigger Fan of Sonic The Hedgehog After Playing The 2 Original Games on The Sega and The Later Games on The Nintendo GameCube and Nowadays It’s The PS3 and The PS4!
16:33 damn chills! Jason will forever be the goat
I remember Him talking about doing something rather secret sometime, It's a Stretch... but I really hope he Meant Sonic 3 as in Voicing Shadow because Istg that will make me cry
To this day, this is my sonic the hedgehog! Glad to see he did an recent interview and thank you everyone for setting it up.
I loved his work in Unleashed and Secret Rings because of the raw emotions he would do for Sonic. So much so I felt a deep emotional connect with the character on the screen. It made me laugh or cry for Sonic when he was going through it. Thats why I love Jason.❤
5:20 I love how he says IT’S ME IT’S ME I find it funny😂😂😂😂
Them firing him was bull! He is SHADOW and always will be!
Jason Griffin is a legend as Sonic
Its so wonderful to see him go from being absolutely ridiculed for no reason to being praised and loved as the best voice of Sonic. This man deserves all the love ❤❤
Fun panel, I love how he's so devoted to having everyone's questiosn answered!
Didn't know about the story how he got the voice for Shadow and Jet, that was hilarious haha
My favorite Shadow for sure. Thank you for existing Carl 😂
I hope he does all future shadow va!!
I'm just waiting for his sister to become the new voice of Mario
that story was SO FUNNY
35:58 I NEED THIS IN MY LIFE
Bruh he did so many voices I can’t fathom this is the same person😭
I remember when i played sonic colors and he didnt have the same voice. My brother and i were UPSET
Bruh that one dude at 35 minutes is outta pocket. I know how he feel & understand the issue but that’s wince worthy energy.
Like again I understand but that was highkey disrespectful in a chill room like this. Jesus
I'm glad someone commented on that as well. No need for that stuff there. Almost like he tried to create an awkward situation for an actor that wasn't even involved in that voice. That guy needed to just sit down and behave.
Yea he was trippin.
To me, Jason was the best voice for Sonic. He portrayed the attitude, flair, and speedy personality of the ionic hedgehog.
He still the definitive voice of Sonic
