I have now replaced my mid irons thru the 7 with hybrids. It's a no brainer for us old geezers. Really enjoying you and your content. Merry Christmas Andy.
Hello Andy , again thank you for your message. We all love your videos and all you have to share. Wishing you and your family a peaceful festive season. AL 😊
Cheers from the USA. l started down this path about six months ago and I am playing the best in years. Gone from 15.3 to 11.8. Always the best advice Thx
Fully agree. I realised about 10 years ago when i carried in winter with 6 clubs that my scoring didn't change. It helped my game as i learned to hit different shots with the same club. I sacked off my driver and hit a recovery 3 off the tee which goes 200 yards and i carry a 5 and 6 hybrid. Also practice chipping round the green thats where most amateurs would benefit rather than the golf range
Thanks Andy, thanks to your constant attention to enjoyable golf bag setup, I carry a 45" driver on either 11.5 or 10.5 (in high summer), a 5 wood and 4hybrid that I usually loft up to 23 degrees. Next is the 6 iron. Only for very windy rounds I might still pack the old 5 iron, alhough usually I just oft the 4h down slightly to keep the ball lower. And yes, a chipper too, although Crossfield was the one that made me buy one. Only thing I am still guilty off is carrying a 60 degree wedge, but I really try to use that for heavy rough emergencies only. Can't help it, I love the short game too much to cut down on my wedges
No one is guilty of carrying a 60 wedge, if it works for you then brilliant, these are only a guide to try and help, sounds like a great set up, have a good Christmas 🎅🏼
I was chuckling throughout this video. It seemed as though you were defining my bad of clubs. I have an old Bang Golf 3W, I think it is 300cc, fitted to 41.5". I am not very tall and that seems to be money. I have fairway woods that are very low profile, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Irons are wide soled, 8, 9, with the Cleveland Smartsole wedges rounding things out. I made these changes a while back. Best decision for my game.
Have you been looking into my golf bag? I'm playing a 13 degree Taylor Made Burner driver, a Taylor Made 7 wood (21 degrees) Taylor Made Rescue 5 wood (25 degrees) Titleist CB693 Forged 8 iron 37 degrees, Titleist Vokey 52 degree wedge, Titleist Vokey 56 degree wedge Ping Putter. I'll take a look for a Ping Chipr! Merry Christmas Andy, Holywell GC looks in good condition for December
Driver tip - highest loft and put some electrical tape about an inch down and grip under that. 7-wood a must, because of the loft I can hit it off the ground further than a 3 wood. Hybrids check. I have a 6 hybrid at 26 degrees and a 6 iron at the same loft. reason the gap between the 6 hybrid and 7 iron is too great. As a 18 handicap I suggest never hit anything off the deck with less than 20 degrees loft.
Growing up playing Texas hard pan, divots were to be avoided. I’m still a sweeper. For a shallow swing, do you think a fairway wood or a hybrid performs better?
In my own case, as a "bruiser, not a divoteer", I tend to have more consistent strikes with the 9 wood and 18° Cleveland HyWood than with my 4 and 5 hybrids. The hybrids will sometimes hook on me at inopportune times as well. A good hybrid shot is a thing of beauty, though.
There’s a great excerpt from Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book that said you can get on most par fours with a seven iron hit three times with a chance for a par putt. I don’t play an iron over a 7 ever since it helped a lot
I've developed what i think is the ultimate easy playing set up over the last six months and got my handicap down to a single digit for the first time in 50 years! 44.5" driver, 4 wood, 3-7 hybrid and 8-LW in irons. A super forgiving Odyssey 11 CS finishes off the bag. Too much ego in golf that stops many from playing the Ideal equipment for their game. Great content as usual Andy, Merry Christmas 👍
Finally getting over the chunky look of those forgiveness irons if they're helpful and make the game more fun. I was one that thought playing with blades would force me to be a better ball striker. What PXG irons / shafts are you using? Happy Christmas!
Great video. I have said for years loft is my friend. Now 75 recovering fron spinal fusion. Reset bag and now have a lot of what suggested. Need only work on hybrid spacing between my 5w and 7i. Good job mate. Happy Christmas.
I’ve switched to the PXG Tour 1 10.5 switched to 12 and all of my shafts are the Cypher 40 in Senior… I’m 55 with a terrible back and distance is gone but this driver just works
Drove to Holywell GC a couple of weeks ago from Anglesey GC where the the course was closed because of frost on the greens. Arrived at Holywell to be greeted by thick fog. Members were still playing but we reckoned visibility was less than 100 yards and not knowing our way round thought it best to abandon ship. Bloody winter golf 😢
I play a Taylormade 15* 3 Wood off the tee - a Taylormade 5 Wood 18* with a longish shaft almost as long as the 3 Wood off the deck! Now comes my old Adams 4 hybrid 23* and then my Mizuno 6 hybrid 28* The Adams is normally only out of the rough and my go to is my Mizuno 6 hybrid for everything else ! Then my Srixon Z585 7 and 9 irons then it's 56* Wedge and Mallet Putter ! Try to practice+++ with my 56* Wedge ! So YES you are totally correct - no doubt about it ! Wish I had done this years ago - wasted time trying to hit long irons Driver blade putter etc ! Do what Andy says he is correct - you will then be enjoying your golf and getting around the course minus the copious expletives 😮!
What's in my bag, 18 holes, driver, fairway wood, hybrid, 6,8, PW, SW, either 58 wedge, definitely my chipper, obviously putter. Course management, using the right tee height, most people use castle tee 😮, that's so wrong stick with white, and read the ground wind etc. For me I write down what club I used, distance , what I used more especially approach shots. My average on par 5 / 4, driver fairway wood or hybrid and what short irons I used again this would depend on distance. so I reduced my irons and stuck with this principle and I enjoy my golf and less hassle in choosing what club to use.
Andy you're correct on all counts.... so why don't we do it? For the new year I'm going to take my 3 wood out the bag and put the shaft on my driver head (Cobra SZ) and see what happens. Love the content as always and hope and your family have a blessed and safe Christmas 🎄
Thanks Harry, I have always stayed true to my word and remain unbiased, these suggestions are not brand specific and I am pleased with your comment, have a good Christmas
Andy, I watch all your videos. Love your content. I have already switched to carrying a 12* driver followed by 7 wood. What brand and model of irons are you playing in this bag? PXG Black OPS?
I have a cleveland XL2 driver . With 9, 10.5 , 10.5 fl, and 12 degree loft. Based on your video I am thinking about changing to 12 degrees. However, what does 10.5 fl mean?
Hi Andy, Great video, I've pretty much built my entire bag around all your advice 😂. Callaway Mini driver Callaway Heavenwood Callaway high launch 5 hybrid Mizuno jpx 925 HL irons Cleveland CBX4 wedges Odyssey Mallet putter Cleveland chipper Have a great Christmas🎄
Currently working on my own version of Marty Jertson's Ping G430 MAX "Thriver" ... G430 MAX head 10.5° cranked up to 12° with a 34 gram weight in the FADE setting plus 6 grams of additional lead tape ... 43 inch Alta CB 65 Black 3 Wood shaft. My swing might need some work too of course but hey, that's what winter's for ! 👊🏽🎯
Man after my own heart on keeping it simple. I’ll switch between Callaway Mini D / PXG Black OPS 3w for off the tee then it’s PXG 5w . Irons Ping i210 6,8,pw or 5,7,9 then it’s 54deg and LAB LiNk 1 putter. Light carry bag and enjoy my golf. Will be watching at Cardrona in 2025 as I can’t commit due to my current broken leg (need to see how rehab goes ) Seasons greetings
My 6: 1. Mini Driver (TM; also serves as a fairway wood) 2. LW (around the greens and out of bunkers) 3. GW (chipping and all shots shorter than 115 yds.) 4. 8-Iron 5. 5-iron 6. Putter Why a 5-iron instead of a hybrid? Because I play a single-length set (Wishon EQ1-NX). Thus, my 5-iron is the same length as my 8-iron, GW, and LW (4-iron through LW in my full set). Thus, no hybrids because I'm way better with a 5-iron.
Often I will take a 14.5 degree 42” length club as my tee club. That and six other hybrids/irons and my putter and off I go. Currently playing off 13.1 index.
Yes, Jack could hit a 1 iron in his prime. But when he was in his prime the 1 iron had the loft of todays 3 iron. He was still a master of the long irons. Long & high, high, high. Still the GOAT.
I'm a 5.6 handicap and I only play 8 clubs. Driver,4 hybrid,6 iron,a strong 8 iron,9 iron,PW,SW and putter. My best rounds are always because of chipping and putting and having 14 clubs makes no difference for me.
I stumbled on the idea of “less is better” last summer when traveling by air to visit our daughter. Honestly, I haven’t noticed a huge scoring differential, I play with a 12 index and occasionally I miss not having a club but I’m learning how to hit the clubs in my bag more consistently and that makes up for not having a full set of clubs. (Driver, 4, 6 HB’s, 7, 9, PW, 54 degree wedge and putter) think I’ll add a 7 wood this year.
No, sorry, might be for you but not for me. I carry 14 clubs and need at least 13 of them: irons 5 to 9 (rarely use the 5 but when needed it's there), PW, GW, SW, LW, Driver, 3w, 5w, 7hybrid 22°, putter - the only club I could do without is the 3w, I hit it only in practice rounds ... usually I hit 5w or hybrid or 5i instead
Absolutely Gerhard you are quite right, it’s not for everyone but you do make the point you don’t use your 3 wood and there is a 7 hybrid in there so some of the club choices we can agree on 👍
68 years old and not a horrible hybrid in my bag nor will there ever be! I’ve tried them don’t like them they don’t like me! 64 gross the other week a hybrid nowhere to be seen,, like your channel Andy but please stop preaching Amen!!

Look at Fred Couples current bag, I think the first traditional iron is a 7 iron.
Yes it is 👍
..And John Daly plays a 26˚ hybrid..

I’ve switched to a 12° loft on my driver and I just choked down a half an inch and it seems to work pretty well!
Sounds good 👌
I've thought about doing the same thing. Have you lost any distance?
I have started using a 12 degree driver and a 7 wood instead of a 5 iron. Not lost any distance. Feels great

Growing up playing Texas hard pan, divots were to be avoided. I’m still a sweeper. For a shallow swing, do you think a fairway wood or a hybrid performs better?
That’s a good question, I consider myself to be a sweeper and not issues with either but maybe the tech says fairway wood?
