Chinese speaker here, Golden Finger is a literal translation of 金手指, which is an umbrella term for cheat devices (Game Genie, Action Replay etc.) here in Taiwan. Judging from this video, seems like Hong Kong gamers also called them by the same name. The name stems from the metal contacts on the cartridge looking like gold-colored fingers, but it only applies to the cheat devices and not the cartridges themselves.
Kevin Wang Are you Norman's Asian counterpart? You should collaborate. And now to my Asian correspondent, "Kevin Wang" and then you pop up in a little box in the upper corner of the screen. It would be hilarious.
@pizzamon 79 Haha, I wish! My only retro gaming cred is that I still have a working NES (not Famicom btw, back in the day in Taiwan we had the Japanese version and carts, I grew up in Canada so our family had a North American NES), and my mom only ever allowed me to buy four NES games aside from the SMB1/Duck Hunt bundled cart, but if Norman does want to run anything related to the East Asia market through me I'd be more than willing to help out! (on an entirely unrelated side note, I've been speedrunning SMB1 and SMB3 on original equipment, but I've only just begun for about a year)
Kevin Wang very interesting. I once had my hands on a Chinese Famiclone which came with a lot off rip-off games (original Famicom titles with some changed assets). It had some similar cheat code system. As a kid I never knew how to get it working, though. :P
Seems to be a common theme. Once when I was staying in a hostel in southern Taiwan, they also had a Famiclone that uses proper carts instead of having the games built in, and there also seemed to be some sort of mysterious cheat code system. Of course the games on the 70-in-1 cart were all ripoffs
funny enough, I think people just referred to any game genie/shark type device as a 金手指 ...its a term I heard up until the 2000s with other canto speakers too. Can confirm we say that too in canto.
I’d like to explain more about Golden finger. Golden finger is a straight translation from Chinese “金手指”. Basically, a golden finger includes two function. One is the same function as well as Game gene. Another is technologically a number detector. In mainland of China, it was pretty hard to have a real Nintendo licensed cartridge in 1990s and 2000s. In this case, most people use emulator. When the game was hard, people can use software to search specific number, then make the number change variously to make sure software does detect the number. Then the software will change the number. For this process there are two ways. One is by changing the save data , we used this way to cheat when we playing Pokémon. Another is by changing the actual game data when the game is running. I believe golden finger uses the second way.
Thanks for explaining! I remember hearing about the golden finger as a kid and my friends thought it was this magical device that could translate Japanese games into English (I imported Pokemon Gold when it was first released which is how this came up at school). I guess it's more of a cheat device and not as magical as my 10-year-old mind made it seem back then. :)
Mandiness Entertainment That is pretty funny! I remember my friend thought Nintendo was a small company which was small enough that they could only wrote their game base on other game software (emulator). I got you feeling. When I saw Wind Waker on GameCube I just wanted hire someone to play game with me!
GB Hunter wins since even though it hurts ears, at least it has an actual melody. Also it was originally a Jeroen Tel song called "That's The Way It Is".
+EposVox Actually, it isn’t… Detel’s GBHunter (sorry, didn’t save the PAL region’s name; GBHunter wasn’t directly marketed by Detel) uses three channel, square wave only sound at a very low bitrate and with no real idea of what could have even been done with the completely lacklustre amount of playroom that gives you. Most of the keygens actually had decent music to them, even if it may not have been to your taste. About 90% of them actually use music from the demo scene back in the 8-bit era. Think about the famous c64 SID chip, or MOD- or StreamTracker modules from the Amiga, to name two of the main ‘providers’. Something that can definitely _NOT_ be said for whatever piece of junk has been used to compensate for the lack of audio support in Detel’s products. Speaking of audio, I actually was amazed to hear that absolutely _none_ of those devices even _tried_ to do anything with the original game’s audio in the first place. Apart from the GBA TV converter, that is…
The main benefit of the Advance Game Port was that it was considerably cheaper than the GBP. I asked my parents for a GBP and got the game port instead because we were poor. In my opinion, it did the job!

Regarding the Super GB Booster for PlayStation, the Save Backup option backs up your save files for Gameboy games that have a save battery option. For example, the Pokemon games.
So in order words unless you were say, one of those types of Pokemon players who were desperately hunting shinys or whatever and wanted a redundant save file, this was almost worthless.
James Kaplan Not exactly. I used to have a Gameboy memory card accessory with similar functionality and it was great for backing up save files. It saved my bacon quite a few times with the GBC Zelda titles when dead batteries fried my save file.
James Kaplan In my experience, It wouldn't save at all unless you hit the save backup. I saved several times from the in-game menu but if you didn't use the backup function then they'd all be lost the next time you booted it up.

9:25Savestates generally just dump the entirety of the game's RAM into a file, so it doesn't really surprise me that the Advance Game Port takes up so much space.
The AGP is the only way to play GBA games legally (and badly) on the Wii using original cartridges (You won't be able to play GB or GBC games or even GBA Video carts on it though).
Nobody's mentioned the etymology of "gold finger" yet, so here's what I managed to find out: There is no clear origin of the term. Although, supposedly, in Hong Kong, it referred to a criminal who would betray their partners for personal gain or to get lighter sentences, but using "gold finger" to mean a snitch has fallen out of use. When the James Bond movie Goldfinger was released, it came back into use and has gained several meanings, including "to cheat" or in the context of literature, a "mary sue". When video game cheat devices were starting to be more available to the consumer, a company made a cheat device for the original Playstation (very similar to the Gameshark), named it "Gold Finger" (the metal contacts on a cartridge look like golden fingers, incidentally), and the name has stuck since.
The GB operator is a nice 3rd party Game Boy Player for PC. Not only does it play GB, GBC, and GBA games, but it also has emulation features like cheat codes and controller support. It has no dealbreakers at all, nothing that makes it worse than a Game Boy Player. It can be used on a smart TV with screen sharing tools if you don't like playing on your monitor. It also has support for features like putting your GB camera photos on your computer (and maybe you'll be able to use your GB camera as a webcam soon) and backing up your saves in case you need to replace a dead battery. (I know this video was made 3 years before the release of the GB operator, but it was relevant to this video)
I own the GBA TV converter. I bought it 15+ years ago when I was living in Asia and this was new technology. This always worked just fine for me when connected to the TV. If only I knew where it was so I can break it out and play again.
Okay, being able to play a Gameboy game while simultaneously utilizing the PS1's CD feature is honestly kinda cool. I dunno, I'm pretty easily impressed by features in older consoles.
There's also the Super Retro Advance Adapter by Retrobit, that plugs into an SNES. Sure, you need separate video cables to get picture and sound, but if you have a Super Retro Trio, you don't need them. The compatibility is quite strong, I've played around 30 or so games on it, and haven't had a single issue with it. But it only played GBA games.
Great video, as always! Every Game Boy player that uses emulation is pretty much terrible. I'd rather use a Game Boy Player instead. That last little add-on with composite output sounds great, if someone offered a service to solder it on. Other than that, I don't really care too much about playing them on a big screen. They're fine as handheld games on a backlit GBA SP.
Doesn't the GBA have those weird non-standard screws too? So you not only have to do this dodgy mod-job to your beloved GBA, you have to get the right screwdriver to do it too
Be N S O N The bits are less than $10 on Amazon. Not too big a deal. And they give you the added bonus of being able to replace the batteries in your games.
benn454 Sure, but it's pretty darn far out of your way to go just to play GBA games on your TV when Nintendo has a peripheral to do it already. That is, unless this thing actually came packaged with the right screw bits.
What I think is kind of funny is that on the box for the Advanced Game Port is that it's supposed to work by plugging it into the second memory card slot, but the box shows it plugged into the first slot.
Heh, I own a Game Booster for my N64. Last time I checked, its pretty much the same as the GB Hunter though with a different cartridge casing. Hearing that infamous tune looping over and over totally destroyed my enjoyment for playing GB games on the big screen.
I saw you on Pat the nes punk's comment section today, You're the highlight of the thread! When you're called out you have to take full advantage since it probably almost never happens.
I had the GBA tv adapter back in the day. It worked but the picture quality was so bad I think I used it twice, then pulled it off and put the original GBA shell back together.
Ah, Datel... Purveyors of trash, as seen in this episode. I wasn't aware of their Game Cube add-on. I did have the GBA TV Converter back when it was new and don't remember having major issues, but I picked one up recently and had an even worse image than you demonstrated in the video! Either I got lucky back in the day, or my eyes weren't working at the time. *shrugs*
8:54 OMG I remember that pokemon gba video! I remember watching both episodes on long car rides. I wish I could remember where it was, those were good episodes!
I had the gba tv converter. It was pretty thick in use , but comfortable. I loved it and used it reliably for a while , then got the GameCube player and sold it to a friend, who still uses it to this day. It was fiddly but ultimately not that hard to install. I recommend it, but not over the GameCube offering , unless ,say, you hated playing with the GameCube controller, or you were one of the three people who had the four swords game and needed to use gba and gcube at the same time...mine had good , near gb player video quality, and never needed readjustment even after a few drops. Maybe I just got lucky, but I wedged that ribbon cable in carefully and fully and never had an issue.
These are some cool accessories! I think the Super Gameboy player, and GameCube player are amazing! I'm glad I was able to learn and experience different things on this channel! Great Content Norm! Keep it Brother! Many Blessings to you and your family!
I remember when someone first told me that a software was "powerful" when they were explaining some super basic, crude software I had to learn. And I wanted to turn to them and say "it's not a nuclear weapon or a magic genie, it edits video. Fuckin relax."
In the Chinese region all the cheat codes are referred to as "the golden finger" or "the golden finger code." That includes all the game shark game genie and whatever codes that we had back in the days :) Not sure where the term came from though. You can easily find this term used through out NES to PS2 era.
The GB Hunter's whole vibe feels so eerie and uncomfortable to me. The drowned out, staticky music loop trying desperately to clear the dead air of silence, only adding insult to injury on one of its primary faults as an emulator for a system that didn't even have complex sound capabilities for its time, especially. But also its _tiny_ screen window paired with the GameBOY's black and white color scheme, the strange warping text of its startup splash, its cheap-looking menus with the bright-red all caps impact font text... It's so strange, and I pity anyone who bought it to play GameBOY games back in the day, whether they had any other way to play it, or didn't and just wasted their money. As much as it does, though, I find it hilarious that they called action replay codes "Golden Finger Codes". I'm just imagining some kind of annual event show, where they give out the 'Golden Finger' award to the best cheats or something.
Those 10 built in games in the Advance Game Port were also available as a seperate software title for the Gamecube and PS2 called “Max Play volume 1” Although impossible to find, Datel also released Game Studio for the PS2 which allows your PS2 to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, has a cheat function and 8 built in games you can load onto the included Games To Go cartridge for play on actual GBC/GBA hardware!
Good Video and nice too see that someone made another Video about this "Things". I also made one Video about the Playstation Version and had a hard Time with the Research, but can say that there are a least 4 Verison of this Adapter. The first one is like the N64 Version (and as far as I could find, also the only Version for the N64), the Second one is a Version with no Sound at all and the Third one is the one with the Build in CD Player Funktion. The forth one is an Version with an Switch on the Side, where you could toggle bethween the GB Booster and an Action Replay (Gold FInger) for the Playstation itself. The mysterious Save Backup Funktion is for the Gamesave. The Adapter is, like you sayd, an Software Emulator and dont uses the Module itself (you can unplug the Modul after the Game is loaded). The Save Backup Funktion writes the Savefile back to the GameBoy Game, if you dont do this, all Progress is gone. Little Fun Fact on the SIde. The inbuild Game is a Bootleg. Rebound Mission is known als Pokemission 97 and was programmed by Anders Granlund in the Mid 90s.
Save Backup would write your save file to the cartridge. At least with Pokémon Blue, when I would save the game from the in-game menu and then restart the game or boot it up later, the game wouldn't register the saves performed from the Game Booster. If I selected the Save Backup from the Game Booster menu before turning off my game, those saves were written to the cartridge as normal. I had to save within the game first, then back it up on the Game Booster for it to work.

GB Hunter's music vs. Crazy Bus' music. A battle for the ages.

GB Hunter wins since even though it hurts ears, at least it has an actual melody. Also it was originally a Jeroen Tel song called "That's The Way It Is".
Crazybus is me being drunk on my DAW and just randomly placing notes by wiggling the mouse up and down.
That stock looping music for the GB HUNTER is horrendous, definitely seems like a worst to best in terms of the order all of these were shown :P
I have to agree, a strange, 3-channel, 4kHz sound chip playing one of the most obnoxious songs ever.

Almost as bad as CrazyBus.

9:25Savestates generally just dump the entirety of the game's RAM into a file, so it doesn't really surprise me that the Advance Game Port takes up so much space.
My favorite part of this whole video is all the attention dedicated to the Game Boy port of Qix! That game is an absolute classic!
I like your videos before I watch them just to save time
DJ SUPERPIRATE gay
Man, I'm always happy to see one of your video show up in my feed
Since the Advance Game Port only uses a disc and memory card slot could it work with the Wii?
Only if you use Nintendon’t.
yes it did, it was the reason i got it in the first place as the wii doesn't support the gameboy player.
It theoretically works on PAL Wiis (or NTSC Wiis modded to be region-free), but has severe audio glitches.
The AGP is the only way to play GBA games legally (and badly) on the Wii using original cartridges (You won't be able to play GB or GBC games or even GBA Video carts on it though).
Nobody's mentioned the etymology of "gold finger" yet, so here's what I managed to find out:
There is no clear origin of the term.
When video game cheat devices were starting to be more available to the consumer, a company made a cheat device for the original Playstation (very similar to the Gameshark), named it "Gold Finger" (the metal contacts on a cartridge look like golden fingers, incidentally), and the name has stuck since.
wow! I had no idea about the player for the Playstation.. that's pretty neat!
What's the music that starts at 10:48?
"Float Islands" from Kirby's Dream Land on the original Game Boy
Kirby's Dream Land: Float Islands
just2good oh hey just2good i never knew you watch the gaming historian
Float islands from Kirby’s Dream Land.
I own the GBA TV converter. I bought it 15+ years ago when I was living in Asia and this was new technology. This always worked just fine for me when connected to the TV. If only I knew where it was so I can break it out and play again.
Have you been working out?
Okay, being able to play a Gameboy game while simultaneously utilizing the PS1's CD feature is honestly kinda cool. I dunno, I'm pretty easily impressed by features in older consoles.
I try to stay away from knock-off add-ons since they don"t work very well.
Really enjoyed seeing all of these and how they worked. Appreciate your time and hope you have a wonderful weekend.
1:00 where is that music from?
Super Mario Land.
The GB Hunter music already plays on a constant loop in the background of my life. So we’re good.
"Unless you ABSOLUTELY love cheating"
OH I LOVE CHEATING! Especially with my 47 different girlfriends.
Was 47 just a random number or a specific number???
this is one of the best channels on youtube. we love you norman
were new here can any1 give us any tips ?
One of my favorite channels on TH-cam
Hey, from where the music around 10:45 comes from?
Kirby's Dream Land
I appreciate the amount of research that it must take to make these videos. Great Job!
Just grab a pointy knife that the end has already snapped off of. 3 or 4 mm of flatness gets the job done
What I think is kind of funny is that on the box for the Advanced Game Port is that it's supposed to work by plugging it into the second memory card slot, but the box shows it plugged into the first slot.
I never knew there were third party Game Boy Player adapters?
Dan EvilRobot they didn't advertise very well because I never heard of them either.
Heh, I own a Game Booster for my N64. Last time I checked, its pretty much the same as the GB Hunter though with a different cartridge casing. Hearing that infamous tune looping over and over totally destroyed my enjoyment for playing GB games on the big screen.
Good information thanks
Almost a million subscribers! Congratulations!
Has everybody been eating their oats? They're quite rich in healthy nutrients!
My buddy Wilford Brimley and I always start our morning with a good, hearty bowl of oatmeal.
Quaker Oat Guy Not recently. I think the last time was a couple of months ago.
I saw you on Pat the nes punk's comment section today, You're the highlight of the thread! When you're called out you have to take full advantage since it probably almost never happens.
i dont think chucky finster ate his.
Yeah but not Quaker oats
You seem to have a knack for picking interesting topcs for your videos Norman.
Keep it up! Love all you stuff!
Use the built in generatuh to create yor own video game cheat codes, guvnah!
These GameBoy console add-on videos have been some of my favorites.
10:29 sounds like an Australian accent, not British. ;)
sounds exactly like bear grylls lol
No, it doesn't. That's quite clearly an English accent, as any English person could tell you.
I love your contents Gaming Historian. The page barely loads and I already click the Like button. Keep up the good work!
If the Game Boy Player exists, why does the Advanced Game Port exist?!?!?!?!
I had the GBA tv adapter back in the day. It worked but the picture quality was so bad I think I used it twice, then pulled it off and put the original GBA shell back together.
Newgrounds Flash Game: those were the memories!
I used Andkon arcade, M8.
*shrugs*
Does S-video help out in any way?
8:54 OMG I remember that pokemon gba video! I remember watching both episodes on long car rides. I wish I could remember where it was, those were good episodes!
Who in their right mind would dislike the Gaming Historian?
Seriously. It's one of the best video game channels by far.
Lazy troll?
So neat. I had no idea these even existed. This was before the internet was so main stream.
*Insert joke about Doug game here*
I had the gba tv converter.
Hey, don't dis Newgrounds Flash games!
Matt Roszak, Bullet Heaven 2 is shit. Repetitive and boring. Please make no more bullet-hells as you know nothing about them.
These are some cool accessories! I think the Super Gameboy player, and GameCube player are amazing! I'm glad I was able to learn and experience different things on this channel! Great Content Norm! Keep it Brother! Many Blessings to you and your family!
Sega had like 1000rd Party add-ons for the genisis😂
I was searching information and a good review for the GameBooster for AGES, thank you!
Hi! I have nothing to say, I will edit this when I come up with a comment.
Finally! You came around to make this video!
Does anyone else hate when people call software "powerful". The commentator talking about "powerful cheat codes" made me laugh.
Blame the marketing department...
PoWeFuL ChEaT CoDeS
I've been waiting for this for so long now! thank you for making it!
I may not have a golden finger but I do have a brown finger.
Dolan Trimp I almost made a "finger" joke, glad to see you got it covered.
Love your work mate and happy to support :)
You’re a pretty good looking guy
Aww its the angry video game nerds' cousin, "The doughy soft spoken geek."
Those 10 built in games in the Advance Game Port were also available as a seperate software title for the Gamecube and PS2 called “Max Play volume 1”
Although impossible to find, Datel also released Game Studio for the PS2 which allows your PS2 to play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, has a cheat function and 8 built in games you can load onto the included Games To Go cartridge for play on actual GBC/GBA hardware!
2018 BITCHES!!!
Needs more twerking
This man makes quality videos
Save Backup would write your save file to the cartridge. At least with Pokémon Blue, when I would save the game from the in-game menu and then restart the game or boot it up later, the game wouldn't register the saves performed from the Game Booster. If I selected the Save Backup from the Game Booster menu before turning off my game, those saves were written to the cartridge as normal. I had to save within the game first, then back it up on the Game Booster for it to work.
