  • In 2003, Nintendo released the follow-up to the Super Game Boy, the Game Boy Player. A device for the Gamecube, the Game Boy Player could play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. Is it the best way to play Nintendo handheld games on your television?

    Hello everyone!
    It's time for the sequel to the Super Game Boy episode. This time we are discussing the Game Boy Player. With a little homebrew help, it's the best way to play Game Boy games on your television. Currently working on a "big" episode for release next month! I'll have a few smaller ones in between. Enjoy your weekend!
    EDIT: In the video I mention Europe only got the Jet Black version. This is incorrect! They also got the purple version!

    that timer was great when I was a kid, I used to take my gamecube with gameboy player over to a group of friends and the timer would come in super handy, we used it to limit how long each person could play then when the timer ran out, the next person would player, and so on

      It's for interlacing. When the display elements are small enough, interlacing can make them visibly flicker, even on a display designed for interlacing like a SD CRT.

    5:23 It's just plain funny that Nintendo seriously thought people would want to pirate the low-res, low-FPS, badly-compressed GBA video files when there are so many *other* ways to pirate Pokemon eps if someone really wanted. Even in 2003.

      @Morgil27 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Shaun Dreclin
      I don't really get what's so hard to understand here. You can easily connect older game consoles to a standard VCR and record game footage (I did it all the time as a kid). With those GBA Video cartridges, what's to stop you from using the same method to record the video on them to a VHS tape? That's why they disabled them from working on the GBA Player.

    • @DrJuice1
      @DrJuice1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      CFAMediaV7 you mean the NES mini? it's so cool that that got hacked, but the only thing that would've gotten me to buy it is if it was online capable. i would pay top $ for a NES repro with a big user install base and online multiplayer. they could even find a way to make single-player-only games side-by-side so that you can still compete against other players.

    Yet another example of DRM being outright nonsensical and going out of its way to inconvenience users to provide false sense of comfort to the company. If someone is going to pirate a Pokemon episode, it's very unlikely to be via the tiny compressed GBA Video version...
    Great episode!

    • @KopperNeoman
      @KopperNeoman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nowadays, yes.
      But nowadays the DRM isn't relevant because Game Boy Interface can run in GBA mode, ignoring all GBP-specific code.

I found this equipment for 20$. I was around 12 at the time, and didn't have money of my own, but I knew the significance of this hardware, and proceeded to ask my mother to get it for me. Thankfully she said she would if the man would hold onto for me. Long story short, I came home with it a week later. It's the crown jewel of my collection. So, a lot of people don't seem to know what the filter settings actually do; from what I can tell, it doesn't actually "soften" the image, all it really does is add a minimal amount of motion blur (normal adds just a smidge of it while soft adds more). I figured that out when plugging in my GBP that I just got for the first time, and noticing the image looked really weird; I figured out it was the filter setting. It's easiest to notice on a game where the screen moves a lot, such as a side-scroller.

    The GameBoy Player was THE BEST way to expand the GameCube library! A real shame that it didn’t work with the Wii due to the change in hardware. And with the GameBoy Interface software, GameBoy games do look great on modern TVs!

    I still kinda wished that they could this for DS and 3DS for every game that is out there psychially on the market. But with it's VC versions on the Wii U and any other past Nintendo console and handheld games that might appear on the Switch, it probably doesn't matter anymore

    The screen filter option isn't just for pixel clarity. On original hardware, the devs took advantage of the slower refresh rate of the lcd screen and could flicker sprites to simulate transparency effects. But on a tv, this shows as a flashing, flickering mess. The filter functions allow for a masking of these flashes, to attempt to show the original intent.

    • @KnightofDarkSorrow
      @KnightofDarkSorrow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I think he misinterpreted the use of the timer. It was likely intended to be used as a play-session timer for parents to use for their children so they didn't play too long, because of school/homework/chores, etc.

    The Game Boy Player allows access to a ridiculous number of games-- provided that you can find the cartridges. This was a bit less of a problem in the middle 2000s than it is now, with the progression of the retro game sales market. I actually went out and bought a Super Game Boy recently after re-watching your video on it last month, and now I'm contemplating a Game Boy Player if I can find one at RetroWorld Expo in October.
    As always, thanks for your continued effort. I always learn something new when I watch your work.

    I was chatting with an older sales associate at a GameStop years ago about how I wanted to try playing the various Game Boy games that my niece and nephews had abandoned at our house, but wouldn't be able to play them since the screens on those stupid handhelds were small and I'm old and wear glasses. He immediately recommended that I get a Game Boy player for my GameCube instead so I could play them on the TV. Really wish the GameCube still worked; wore it out with the Game Boy player.
    Picked up a Wii (after Nintendo took a dump on the owners and cut off all online support). Loved that it let me play the GameCube games, but was pretty disappointed that they didn't include a Game Boy slot on it.
