Any teenage rock fan back in the 70`s who knew their rock stars knew about Rory Gallagher. The Internet has opened the eyes of a new generation of fans from kids and those who did manage to miss him in real time when they were young. R.I.P. Legend.

I have seen many people, famous and not famous discuss Rory and i have never heard any one of them put Rory down. If anything the word that kept coming up from all of them was `gentleman`, he was also very humble for such a talent. R.I.P. Rory.
10 minutes of my life I'll never get back again. Saw Rory live many times. Met him once backstage. The man was a guitar god and a lovely, humble and down to earth human being. Don't waste your time watching this somewhat unpleasant little film.

His later years were equally brillant in terms of his music. He was becoming a true genius when he died. Unfortunately, the mass media did not see it that way, focusing only in his image, as he was gaining weight... Rory played much better when he left us than in his early years. Only God knows what he could have accomplished had he lived
....Saw Rory Gallaher quite few times from the Sixties onwards and he radiated his energy while playing... An inspiration to many young aspiring musicians...he kept it live, improvising constantly thru his many background influences...broken string? No problem...he simply moved higher up the scale. AND, if anyone thinks putting a working band together is easy... It isnt. When people feel passionately about something, you get fireworks. You sometimes have to make decisions you would prefer not to make, and may never forgive yourself for... Its only Rock and Roll, Folks... xx
He would have lifted even `The Last Waltz` to a higher level if he was on that stage with The Band. Guitar fireworks to match Eric Clapton and Robbie Robertson.
Seen him five times in small venues, and damn right he would not cave into the record companies, you was not about letting his music be victimized, and yet it's not that unusual for musicians to go through. A few here and there, Jerry McElroy was with him for 20 plus years. I've seen hundreds of artists since the mid-60s up until even currently, and I mean nobody could put on a show from start to finish like Rory Gallagher! And yes, he was a private man, who doesn't have issues for crying out loud. The man's music is brilliant. His showmanship was at the top of the food chain. And even Rory knew himself, he could not play with the stones, why in the hell would he take a backseat to Keith Richards or Mick Jagger if anything that propelled him even further along into what he knew he had to do.... As for myself and probably millions of others are damn proud to not only have heard this man's music, but to be honored to have witnessed and play live..... He is irreplaceable and only over the last few years. Does this name seem to be even more popular, so if anything somebody wants to bad talk them. It's like another commenter had just said, just makes us want to love the man and his music that much more.... Rory Gallagher... He stands alone.
We should always distinct the man from the artist. There is no great artist who hasn't been a person with great fragilities and easy to relate to. Perfectionism, inflexibility, loyalty to himself... you can't reach that artistic level without having these characteristics. I don't believe that the musicians who worked with him had a gun to their head; they chose to work with him because he was great. What sense does it make to criticize or emphasize his fragilities? His artistic work is immortal and still vivid. Nothing else matters.

Back then Nugent was just getting off the ground and really on top of his game in concert. Ted rolls out and does 3 kicka$$ songs before talking to the crowd. Besides the usual welcome, thanks for coming speal, he goes " how the fuck about Rory Gallagher"? Fantastic compliment from a great musician that knew he was out of Rory's league opening for him!
I don't know what this video is trying to say. Everyone knows Rory was dedicated and a bit of a perfectionist. Everyone knows he was tireless and obsessive in his work ethic. Everyone knows he burned himself out in the end.

I have always revered Rory as a guitar genius and a lovely man, but have never delved into exploring his personal life. Listening to his story. as presented here is shockingly familiar to another of my rock heroes - Steve Marriott. So many parallels - musical gifts, difficult personality, driving perfectionism, little interest in fame and money, conflictwith the music industry, emotional demons, substance abuse, tragic early death. Rory and Steve were two blazing comets who shone brightly, then burned themselves out. May they both rest in peace. I own a book that I bought when I was researching Marriott, this same book also details the life of Rory and two other musicians, I only read the section on Marriott, but I think I will now dust it off to learn more about Rory. Highly recommend this book by Dan Muse : "Gallagher; Marriott; Derringer & Trower. Their Lives and Music"

Some of the stuff included is incorrect. His bass player for over 20 years was Gerry McEvoy, I think the fact that Gerry spent 20 years with Rory conflicts with your comment that "musicians came and went'. Mark Feltham also was a member of his band for many years. Your comment about the Rolling Stones is also incorrect, he wasn't offered a place in the Stones. Rory played/jammed with them for 3 days, leaving only to go on a tour of Japan. The story goes that Mick Jagger wanted him to join but Keith Richard couldn't be wakened to also approve his recruitment. John Wilson fell out with Rory during the Taste Breakup. The breakup was as a result of the manager and the other two band members taking sides against Rory. Rory wrote most of the Music released by Taste. They had hit albums, played to thousands all over the world, however at the end of Taste Rory left with nothing, only his guitar, amp and an empty bank balance. It took Rory many years to regain control of the music he had written during his time with Taste.
Taste one of the best 3 piece Bands Ever. I think John Wilson was one of Rory's best Drummers, But did he and Richard go behind Rory's back with management and released a single without Rory knowing as they knew he wouldn't want to release singles? anyway we've all got Problems, I was lucky to met Rory on 4 occasions He was a shy guy but still took time to speak to his fans. Lucky enough to have seen Rory 2 times in my hometown Cleveland ,Ohio . Met him after both shows , spoke about occupied Ireland and my favorite band Thin Lizzy . He was shy funny and a true gentleman . RIP .

They were also one of the biggest players in slavery outside of the Romans during Romans rule in Britain (England), their stock in trade, British children. The Irish made slaves out of their own people and traded them with the Romans in Britain. Ireland had an empire that predates the British empire by 1000 years, it relates specifically to parts of the U. K the Irish had controling influence and parts where they had absolute control. I think John Wilson still holds a grudge about the way Taste split up but the reality is that they were being ripped off by their manager. Yes, Rory did want artistic control but he proved in his solo career that he was the main attraction all along. His personal life is a sad tale, based on the reality that offstage, he was a shy person.
I would rate him as being equal to any of the other blues based rock guitarists his era. Maybe more than equal? A real shame the way his lifestyle and then health from it took him down at the end. Thanks for the music Rory.
Nice collection of photographs. The narrative, for me, is repetitive and lacking in depth .... a passing mention of Wilson when the note promisd more ses the stage for an unmenorable collection of ideas that any Rory fan already knows. The Rolling Stone story is seriously incomplete. Rry actually travelled to Berlin so as to meet with Mick and Keith who were momentarily distanced ..... and there is more. Try harder.

Rory was the star, the others were replaceable as their subsequent careers proved. After Taste, I see no problem with him being demanding. His name is on the tickets, he was paying the wages and the financial risks were his. Workhorse musicians need big reality checks sometimes.
Gallagher was at his peak with Taste.... they were incredibly creative in comparison to Rory's solo efforts....I listened to him as a teenager but soon grew out of him. IMHO the Taste albums eclipse later works except for "Live In Europe" the fact that he drank himself to death was a further disappointment. Still..... he pioneered great guitar tone and was fabulous Blues singer and Ragtime Blues player. Saw him Live at Adelaide Festival Theatre on December 19th 1974 and Live he was something else, his energy and passion made for a killer experience. Who would have thought that decades later I would have been standing in Harrods at a Rory Gallagher exhibition and holding my 1960 Fender Stratocaster up against his beaten up Strat mounted in a glass case? RIP Rory, your respect is well deserved
Did you know that Taste played a live gig in Harrods boutique (not too sure of the date but must have been 1968/9) My memories of that band playing live, far eclipse anything else he did.
I saw Rory Gallagher quite a few times when he came to New Zealand,, Every show was absolutely brilliant, he was well mannered & well spoken, He came with his band a couple of times then came solo a couple of times, Non of us over here saw anything that you are suggesting, even in all hi TV & radio interviews, So you maybe Bending the truth a bit,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I would suggest that "John Wilson" has run out of money, thats why he is doing this

That really should have been the point that his health issues should have been addressed. Things improved a bit when Brendan O'Neill replaced Ted, but obviously Gerry & Brendan saw things and decided to quit. What happened after that was not too great & I what I witnessed, at the now infamous Town & Country gig in Kentish Town, London. 29/10/1992 was really really sad - I felt so sad for him that night, after all the great gigs I'd seen him play since 1968. Taste & the four piece for me - Such great Marquee Club memories there!
@@picknick3591 I saw him ten times, the first time being around 1974 (Against the Grain tour I think). The last saw him but he was so bloated I hardly recognised him. I'm not sure exactly what year that was though. It was a sad sight, but he could still play!
i grew up listening to every rory track available saw 20 gigs....i met him. I feel i have the measure of him as a generalised character. He was a great musician and great humble guy. If he had high expectations it was good for us to listen to the incredible music that his hard work (and as pointed out "uncompromising") , delivered.. No one will ever really listen to a poor snapshot of the great man and guitarist of unique and extraordinary magic. This critique isnt necessary...rory will have fans old and new. i have never ever been as exhilarated as i have watching rory live. Just when you thought he reached the limit in a solo, he would drive it beyond and into a higher plane of excellence. There was something really magical about him.

Rory had a great respect for fellow Irishman, Lois Stewart [great jazz guitarist], and there were many parallels; the shy hypersensitivity, definitely - I guess drink is the killer.
Very interesting, but I suspected many of us will not find this surprising. They say there is a price to pay for everything so I suppose success is no different. I envy him in that he knew his purpose and never deviated from it. I saw him at reading a very long time ago. If his ex band mate wants to make a few bob by say uncomplimentary things about him let him. Rory has become immortal through his gift of music which he left us. We and future generations will still speak his name. They may still be doing so in 100 or 200 years time, look at what happened to Mozart. I do not think that will be the case with what’s his name (just saying) ❤
That same thought hit me as I watched this video. You could substitute the name Marriott here and the story is almost the same. I don't know enough about the personal lives of Lynott, Kossof and Moore other than they were gifted artists who sadly died way too early. I guess the old truism is correct - "There is a fine line between genius and madness". Very sad, but this also is what make them such interesting characters. Bless them all....
Rory played BluesRock, That was his thing, Wilson considered himself a virtuoso drummer and was constantly pushing to go all out into Mahavishnu territory, Rory wasnt interested. That was the disconnect. John was better off on his own...

Not sure what the problem was with Rory in this video? All I can say is Rory Gallagher's band's were always trios. All the greats were 3 piece bands,Johnny Winter, Cream, Jimi Hendrix's Experience, etc. In those bands you have to work your ass off! Ha! This so reeks of sour grapes. Rory's former bandmates in Taste were the ones who betrayed him, which was well documented at the time. They just couldn't abide by the laws of nature that appoint the most talented, visionary and leadership-adept to take charge. One can only imagine the spectacular heights their careers might have ascended to if they had remained loyal and stuck by the genius who thought they were his friends. Instead of which, they plummeted into obscurity and oblivion. They would say this about him now, wouldn't they.
An excellent and accurate analysis. Devoted musicians are a strange, lonely lot, often not of this world, they have to be to get there. Rory was a prime example. Few will ever understand.

I have always revered Rory as a guitar genius and a lovely man, but have never delved into exploring his personal life. Listening to his story. as presented here is shockingly familiar to another of my rock heroes - Steve Marriott. So many parallels - musical gifts, difficult personality, driving perfectionism, little interest in fame and money, conflictwith the music industry, emotional demons, substance abuse, tragic early death. Rory and Steve were two blazing comets who shone brightly, then burned themselves out. May they both rest in peace.
I own a book that I bought when I was researching Marriott, this same book also details the life of Rory and two other musicians, I only read the section on Marriott, but I think I will now dust it off to learn more about Rory. Highly recommend this book by Dan Muse :

Some of the stuff included is incorrect. His bass player for over 20 years was Gerry McEvoy, I think the fact that Gerry spent 20 years with Rory conflicts with your comment that "musicians came and went'. Mark Feltham also was a member of his band for many years.
Your comment about the Rolling Stones is also incorrect, he wasn't offered a place in the Stones. Rory played/jammed with them for 3 days, leaving only to go on a tour of Japan. The story goes that Mick Jagger wanted him to join but Keith Richard couldn't be wakened to also approve his recruitment.
John Wilson fell out with Rory during the Taste Breakup. The breakup was as a result of the manager and the other two band members taking sides against Rory. Rory wrote most of the Music released by Taste. They had hit albums, played to thousands all over the world, however at the end of Taste Rory left with nothing, only his guitar, amp and an empty bank balance. It took Rory many years to regain control of the music he had written during his time with Taste.

Taste one of the best 3 piece Bands Ever. I think John Wilson was one of Rory's best Drummers, But did he and Richard go behind Rory's back with management and released a single without Rory knowing as they knew he wouldn't want to release singles? anyway we've all got Problems, I was lucky to met Rory on 4 occasions He was a shy guy but still took time to speak to his fans. Lucky enough to have seen Rory 2 times in my hometown Cleveland ,Ohio . Met him after both shows , spoke about occupied Ireland and my favorite band Thin Lizzy . He was shy funny and a true gentleman . RIP .

@@brnrik500 I'm not Irish, the Irish did bring British rule upon themselves, fact. They were attacking Britain for at least 1000 years before British rule came to Ireland. They were also one of the biggest players in slavery outside of the Romans during Romans rule in Britain (England), their stock in trade, British children. The Irish made slaves out of their own people and traded them with the Romans in Britain. Ireland had an empire that predates the British empire by 1000 years, it relates specifically to parts of the U. K the Irish had controling influence and parts where they had absolute control. I think John Wilson still holds a grudge about the way Taste split up but the reality is that they were being ripped off by their manager. Yes, Rory did want artistic control but he proved in his solo career that he was the main attraction all along. His personal life is a sad tale, based on the reality that offstage, he was a shy person.
I would rate him as being equal to any of the other blues based rock guitarists his era. Maybe more than equal? A real shame the way his lifestyle and then health from it took him down at the end. Thanks for the music Rory.
Nice collection of photographs. The narrative, for me, is repetitive and lacking in depth .... a passing mention of Wilson when the note promisd more ses the stage for an unmenorable collection of ideas that any Rory fan already knows. The Rolling Stone story is seriously incomplete. Rry actually travelled to Berlin so as to meet with Mick and Keith who were momentarily distanced ..... and there is more. Try harder.
Sometimes, you have to shut up, and put up with when working alongside a genius because others just don't have what it takes at that level.
Rory was a complete genius he was a maestro a genius in fact he is up there with the all time greats like Hendrix. Gary Moore, S.R.V. Terry Kath, Mark Knofpler, Jeff Beck, Duane Allman, Eddie Van Halen. R,I.P. THE GREAT RORY GALLAGHER AND THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING MY FRIEND.
Rory was the star, the others were replaceable as their subsequent careers proved. After Taste, I see no problem with him being demanding. His name is on the tickets, he was paying the wages and the financial risks were his. Workhorse musicians need big reality checks sometimes.

Gallagher was at his peak with Taste.... they were incredibly creative in comparison to Rory's solo efforts....I listened to him as a teenager but soon grew out of him. IMHO the Taste albums eclipse later works except for "Live In Europe" the fact that he drank himself to death was a further disappointment. Still..... he pioneered great guitar tone and was fabulous Blues singer and Ragtime Blues player. Saw him Live at Adelaide Festival Theatre on December 19th 1974 and Live he was something else, his energy and passion made for a killer experience. Who would have thought that decades later I would have been standing in Harrods at a Rory Gallagher exhibition and holding my 1960 Fender Stratocaster up against his beaten up Strat mounted in a glass case? RIP Rory, your respect is well deserved
Did you know that Taste played a live gig in Harrods boutique (not too sure of the date but must have been 1968/9)
My memories of that band playing live, far eclipse anything else he did.
TASTE were amazing, saw them six times, "On The Boards" my favourite album of all time. 🎸🎸

I saw Rory Gallagher quite a few times when he came to New Zealand,, Every show was absolutely brilliant, he was well mannered & well spoken, He came with his band a couple of times then came solo a couple of times, Non of us over here saw anything that you are suggesting, even in all hi TV & radio interviews, So you maybe Bending the truth a bit,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I would suggest that "John Wilson" has run out of money, thats why he is doing this

For me Taste was the best of Rory Gallagher.
To me it was the 4piece Band with this fabulous drummer and the keyboard player.

@@robertmckinnon6564 That 3 piece was great with Ted on drums, but I feel that it was also the start of Rory's decline. That really should have been the point that his health issues should have been addressed.
Things improved a bit when Brendan O'Neill replaced Ted, but obviously Gerry & Brendan saw things and decided to quit. What happened after that was not too great & I what I witnessed, at the now infamous Town & Country gig in Kentish Town, London. 29/10/1992 was really really sad - I felt so sad for him that night, after all the great gigs I'd seen him play since 1968.
Taste & the four piece for me - Such great Marquee Club memories there!
@@picknick3591 I saw him ten times, the first time being around 1974 (Against the Grain tour I think). The last saw him but he was so bloated I hardly recognised him. I'm not sure exactly what year that was though. It was a sad sight, but he could still play!

i grew up listening to every rory track available saw 20 gigs....i met him.
I feel i have the measure of him as a generalised character.
He was a great musician and great humble guy.
If he had high expectations it was good for us to listen to the incredible music that his hard work (and as pointed out "uncompromising") , delivered..
No one will ever really listen to a poor snapshot of the great man and guitarist of unique and extraordinary magic.

Very interesting, but I suspected many of us will not find this surprising. They say there is a price to pay for everything so I suppose success is no different. I envy him in that he knew his purpose and never deviated from it. I saw him at reading a very long time ago. If his ex band mate wants to make a few bob by say uncomplimentary things about him let him. Rory has become immortal through his gift of music which he left us. We and future generations will still speak his name. They may still be doing so in 100 or 200 years time, look at what happened to Mozart. I do not think that will be the case with what’s his name (just saying) ❤
This same story can also be repeated by many eg Steve Marriott, Phil lynott,, Paul kossof, Gary Moore,
That same thought hit me as I watched this video. You could substitute the name Marriott here and the story is almost the same. I don't know enough about the personal lives of Lynott, Kossof and Moore other than they were gifted artists who sadly died way too early. I guess the old truism is correct - "There is a fine line between genius and madness". Very sad, but this also is what make them such interesting characters. Bless them all....

Mixing alcohol and pills is really bad on the liver so don’t do that. He lived tomorrow today too many times.I saw him 6 times here in the U.S. and he is my favorite musician of all time. R.I.P.

Not sure what the problem was with Rory in this video? All I can say is Rory Gallagher's band's were always trios. All the greats were 3 piece bands,Johnny Winter, Cream, Jimi Hendrix's Experience, etc. In those bands you have to work your ass off! Ha! This so reeks of sour grapes. Rory's former bandmates in Taste were the ones who betrayed him, which was well documented at the time. They just couldn't abide by the laws of nature that appoint the most talented, visionary and leadership-adept to take charge. One can only imagine the spectacular heights their careers might have ascended to if they had remained loyal and stuck by the genius who thought they were his friends. Instead of which, they plummeted into obscurity and oblivion. They would say this about him now, wouldn't they.
An excellent and accurate analysis. Devoted musicians are a strange, lonely lot, often not of this world, they have to be to get there. Rory was a prime example.
