- Noch bevor Rory Gallagher die 1. Rocknacht in der Grugahalle in Essen 1977 eröffnete, war er bereits mit seiner Band im legendären WDR-Studio L aufgetreten. Die Aufzeichnung fand am 6. Oktober 1976 statt.
Bei dem Studiokonzert vor Publikum spielte Gallagher (Gesang/Gitarre) gemeinsam mit Gerry McAvoy am Bass, Rod De'Ath an den Drums und Lou Martin am Keyboard. Der Höhepunkt seiner damaligen Show war der akustische (Solo-)Teil, mit dem Gallagher einstieg und den er eigens für den Rockpalast verlängert hatte.
Nach dem akustischen Teil mit Coversongs aus Country, Blues und Folk folgte der elektrische Band-Teil. Im Verlauf des Konzerts brachte Gallagher das Kölner Publikum mit Akustikgitarre, Dobro, Slide-Gitarre, Mandoline und seiner berühmten, abgewetzten Fender Stratocaster zum Kochen.

Rory and John Frusciante are the only guitarists I've ever heard or even seen that could channel their emotions into an improv on the fly that hit me harder than actual poetic lyricism being sung well.
I'm American and I wish people here in America were as humble as Rory. The world would be a much better place if humanity was humble and respectful towards everyone like Rory was.

@@Vigilante311 Rory is definitely not known by the majority of Americans. I'm sure true rock fans know of him here. But most of us don't. I actually discovered him a few days ago when I left the first comment above. But, he was talented. Almost as talented as our Stevie Ray Vaughn.

@@DudeMannn I found out about Rory in the summer of 2013 when I went to see Joe Bonamassa in Greensboro, NC and he opened with Cradle Rock and it changed my life as a music lover but even more as a guitarist myself. Nearly a decade later, I still listen to Rory on a daily basis. I've had health problems over the years including a brain tumor that caused me to have epilepsy and Rory is what got me through it all. I had the tumor removed in March of 2019 and when I woke up from the surgery the first thing I wanted was to listen to Irish Tour
Rory and the band had flown in from another gig...They'd been in the studio for twelve hours, played a marathon gig which was filmed in front of a studio audience..Playing most of the songs from 'Calling Card" before its release..Rory got changed after the performance then had to sit and listen, and answer, the stupid questions of Albrecht....Rory was exhausted, and hungry...How he kept his cool with this guy is a miracle...Rory, a true gentleman, even in circumstances like these......
I agree, the interviewer left a huge room for improvement. He simply did not get Rory or what Rory did.
What a genius he was. He responded beautifully and gave intelligent informing answers to silly questions. He made the spectator time worthwhile.
I kinda felt sorry for Rory, having to answer some awful questions, but he dealt with it just fine.

The interviewer was very limited as English wasn‘t his first language. Soon after the Rockpalast team switched to Alan Bangs , who did a great job anyway ! Good old days …oh my
Every time I listen to Rory Gallagher talk, his humble manner strikes me right in the damn tear ducts. At 57 I still can’t get enough of this gentle Master. God bless you Rory. I still learn from you. You are very much missed.

Joe Davis, may I suggest you listen to a jewel I just found with Rory in an incredible, no the definitive version of I Could've Had Religion. He was playing The Marguee Club April 1972. I have never heard his slide to be this haunting. I'm not knowledgeable like you, but as one true fan to another I don't want you to not witness this awesome performance. And the skat! RORY takes you to a very different time & place. Enjoy

Good grief, this is painful to watch. Rory was such a sensitive, emotional and genuine person. That interviewer is so aloof and showed no empathy whatsoever whilst grilling Rory about personal feelings etc. I wouldn't have been surprised if Rory would've walked out after a few minutes saying, 'sorry mate, I don't think this is going anywhere'. And would you believe he's asking if Rory is satisfied with his life...WTF??? Well, it just goes to show that Rory was extremely easygoing to put up with this nonsense.
A true gentleman, eloquent both verbally & musically; modest; man of the people; no "star" antics or pretensions. I saw him only once 1972 Xmas-New Year concert , Dublin National Stadium. A terrible, unnecessary loss to Ireland and far beyond. World's greatest guitarist , ever, with a true, rich singing voice. R.I.P. Rory.
That live version of shadow play where he lays the guitar on the floor then pulls it to make reverb is an antic but I love every second of it

This simple guy with a big soul who is for sure one of the best guitar players ever lived came from south Ireland from a small town called translated in portuguese "cortiça" wich Portugal is one of the biggest producers worldwide. Rory was one very special guy - I miss him very much!
The interviewer is hard work. Rory carried the interview remaining polite & understanding of the host's limited English.
Rory seems tired, run down and a little inebriated but still has the patience of the saint he is with that absolute plank of an interviewer. Miss you Rory 😔 xx
This interview was filmed more or less immediately after a typically-full on concert he’d just done for Rockpalast, so he’s understandably a little knackered!

I really enjoyed the interview. Watching Rory handle the would-be shrink was interesting and shows what a gentleman he was. This was in the era of Aerosmith, Queen, Elton John, all the glitz - when everyone was trying to be an untouchable rock star, and yet Rory only wanted to be himself. He reminds me a little of Ronnie Lane - didn't care about anything besides the music.
And he was so full of fun !!

IM 69 RETIRED . Born in westminster London . in 1970 i was in Shaftsbury ave , near Wardour st soho. i was Looking at Guitars in a second hand shop and Next To me was RORY , we spoke and i told him i knew who he was . he was very shy in fact i thought he was embarressed . but he gradually started talking . in a slow manner . he told me he was playing the MARQUEE Club in wardour st. and to come down . so i did . . i meet Rory a few times over the Years particularly in the Corn exchange CAMBRIDGE We spoke again . he NEVER Avoided Fans . he Liked Small hall atmoshere . crowds . and enjoyed sitting Jamming in Pubs in company . the ONLY Time he really come ALIVE Was MUSIC ....he Signed the Live in EUROPE LP On the Label for me i still have it in my collection . today . his Playing just got BETTER And Better over the years . till that dreaded day in 1995 .. RIP Rory .

I saw him in Finch’s Pub in the Fulham Road London, ran home got Live in Europe and he signed it for me ! Then he stayed on and did a blues jam with another player - the best of times ! Around ‘75.
The interviewer and his questions are about as exciting as watching grass grow. I give Rory lots of credit for being able to sit thru it with out pulling his hair out

Best gig I ever saw: Rory at the Brit Boat Club, Nottingham UK in maybe 1972. After which he took the time to show me his treble booster and taught me how to rewire a Strat! This is while he is packing up his own gear after blazing away for three hours! That's real.

Rory Gallagher must have been a really humble and down-to-earth person. Doesn't seem to have any airs at all. I can imagine him having a drink in his local pub with the patrons and then saying "Cheers mate, sorry I've got to run" - then goes off and wows the world!!

I loved this man so much. He was an absolute phenomenal guitarist and vocalist and he is missed so much. I first heard him in 1978 when I heard Pistol Slapper Blues and I was hooked. I emulate him and he is who I want to play like although I know I’ll never get there. But I’ll keep trying. If there’s a rock and roll heaven…..

I heard live in Europe in 72 when I was a freshman in college and I was hooked. Saw him in Montreal College then at the Bottom Line in NY my hometown. He was awesome live. Incredible stage presence. Im 68 and still listening. Miss his music live. A shame that he died so young

I saw Rory once in the late eighties. Around the same time saw stevie Ray Vaughn. I give thanks that I had friends who took me to these gigs. Two of the greatest, without doubt.
I’m jealous. They both look like they gave their life’s blood to each performance. Did you have a preference to who you thought was a greater player after seeing/ hearing them live?
@@88pynogrl both were truly great players. I named my son Rory so maybe that gives you a clue. But my wife's brother and wife named their son Stevie Ray before this, so it was taken! I am also half Irish, so maybe biased

Thank god I got to see him at The University of Miami in '72. He was one of a kind, so gifted yet so humble. They truly broke the mold after Rory - the best of the very best. RIP Rory.

I picked up my first Rory Gallagher album around this time, "Against the Grain." I was immediately hooked. Saw him live in SF and Madison WI. He played straight from the heart. No stage antics. He'd just floor it and keep on going. Great shows always. RIP Rory.

He was immensely talented yet totally unadorned. The music was front and center always. So unusual in the big business Rock World. Truly one of a kind. RIP Rory.

What an amazing man...I have only seen him on TH-cam...What an entertainer...He gives you all he has in every show...I went to see Bob Dylan who is my God...But it was like he didn't want to be there...I've seen loads of this man on here and everytime he used the whole stage and every ounce of energy...He is an absolute brilliant watch...At the end of the gig he was shattered, and ya can tell he was exhausted by his voice...Love watching him on TH-cam

Rory used to play rock till he dropped then he would take a break and play some acoustic numbers then after his "rest" he would then take the roof off with his renewed energy and best licks !! I saw him at the Top Rank Suite here in Liverpool UK in 1971 Osibisa opened and He closed !! Osibisa were so good I was fearful Rory would have trouble - He didn't !!
@@zohramennane5866 I must've been high but he was, hands down, the best concert in my life. Thirteen on stage, no frills, and came on polished. That and I got to see my all-time idol so I got those things going for me.

It almost seemed as though the interviewer wrote out his questions 5 minutes before the interview. Yet he asked the kind of questions I think a lot of people would want to know about. As for Rory, he seemed humble, honest, and self reflective, like I would hope most musicians would.

Listening to the great Rory Gallagher is like being taken to school every time! His knowledge is incredibly vast and he is always and kindly willing to share. What a great guy💖
Wow, Rory isn't only an incredible musician, but very patient as well. I love how he speaks very slowly so that the interviewer understands and how he doesn't even flinch, being confronted with their communication culture, lol. The amount of times I thought "Stop being rude, ffs!" - and I'm German, so I know that the interviewer wasn't trying to be rude, but was just not being too familiar with international communication and was possibly insecure, too, because of the language barrier, so he cut out all the polite small talk, signs of appreciation and other "nice to have"s. Still - Imagine how an Irishman must feel, being interviewed in that manner. He must've met a lot of Germans before - or he's a true saint.
Having said that, I love your work, WDR - and for that time the interviewer's English was incredible! Way to go!

Really like this. Looks like Rory has had a small refreshment - which helps when faced with this interviewer. Some interviews he could be more inhibited as - for me - the intensity of his commitment to the music must make it awkward to talk about it.
The man played and sang. Others talked...
looks like a German programme, Rory is the perfect gentleman the interviewer is picking up on what he says not what he is saying. and he is one hell of a guitarist loved by all my mates who range form mods to metal. he was the blues.
They did this interview after the Rockpalast 1976 show. I read an article that said the band had been in the TV studio all day, then gave that brilliant performance in the evening, then Rory, exhausted and hungry ( hadn't eaten since lunchtime) patiently answered all these questions. That smile at the end was probably relief at the prospect of finally being able to go get a meal and relax.
I first got into Rory when I was still at school ( I'm 67) when I heard " Same Old Story" by Taste. Unfortunately I only saw him once when he played at Free Wheels , a bikers festival in Central France I think in 1991. Sadly missed RIP

I find that when artists as well as everyday folk are asked to describe emotions, especially the blues with words are immediately humbled. The humble experience attracts humble people or is humbling if you are not already there on arrival. I like the way the subject is addressed here in the interview and in the comments. I've been moved by how Keith Jarrett and Billie Holiday talk about that expression. Billie Holiday talks about how the Blues is not about one particular emotion (sad) but others as well. Keith is just on another plane when he talks about it It is an experience that is identifiable, but not easily put into words no matter what fund words you have or ability to articulate. People tend to hit that wall where music has to take over where words simply cannot. This is so wonderfully demonstrated in this interview.

My 83 yo father's been a poet and songwriter since he was 13. I never realized how difficult is for an average person without the gift to make one single composition until I tried. He made lyrics and music at the same time mostly in 1-2 hours but most of the time it was in less than half an hour. Now I'm 40 and started to write my feelings as therapy. Metric, rhyme and metaphors are coming fluent. It's sad feelings that gave me that kind of inspiration. It's weird. I always thought it's something you was born with. Buts it's probably something you need to discover inside.

Saw Rory down-under in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre in the late 70s early 80s many times before Capital closed for a few decades to reopen later. Rory was a guitar master, full of energy. If you were up close to the stage he often let you strum his beaten fender guitar. The show always left you in awe to his music ability on multiple electric and acoustic instruments. But rock-blues was down pat Rory style. God bless you, memories to be cherished with the Boys. Still got and listen to all your albums. Energy and style at another level.

YEAH I would Say that RORY was paying attention in Finishing School the day they taught how to handle ANNOYING Interviewers . . Im not sure if its a translation thing or What But im pretty sure the Questions are asked with the INTENTION of getting an answer . The big sigh out of Rory a ways into it , Tells the story . Good on ya Rory . at some pont he should have said I sing the Blues after interviews like this !
Nothing like an overly cerebral German trying to understand where "music comes from" by asking one of the best musicians ever to walk the planet some of the most awkward questions possible. Rory was graceful in his answers even if his frustration with having to go through this torture was ever so slightly hovering in the background. I cut my teeth on "Irish Tour- '72" and still play it 50 years later when I need to turbocharge my day. You were the best, man. Still are.

I knew his name , as I saw posters of him in Liverpool in the early 1980’s..but didn’t know anything about him. I remember thinking who is Rory Gallagher? I never got to see him, now all these years later on TH-cam I’m blown away by his brilliance not only musically but as a thoughtful person with a gentle and beguiling manner. Quote from Polly Toynbee wisdom: Never be beguiled by false promises of simplicity, because peoples circumstances don’t come in one size”.

You can see him starting to get annoyed at 1:22 😂. He just spent the last minute explaining the guitar is a steel National Reso and then basically asks him the same question again.

I was lucky enough to interview Rory in Cork in 1983 for a UCC student magazine. I wasn't exactly an experienced journalist, but I also let the man finish a sentence, at least.
So I'm not the only one ... Rory is so gentle and nice and the interviewer not only does not let him finish a sentence but also does not finish playing the demo and it's even worse
I didn't find the interviewer's style to be psychoanalytic at all. The interviewer was a German and he was curious and wanting to help his German audience understand American music and American guitar playing style. I found the innocence of his questions endearing and I'm sure his German audience appreciated the information he was getting from Rory who generously gave it.
I'm starting to think that 95% of interviewers are wankers.

Out of the blue and "the blues" are two different inspirations...maybe not for everybody. Irish Folk is a progenitor of many popular musical genres. American folk, blues, and country being a few.
