Took a girl to see Rory at Sheffield city Hall, she didn't have clue who he was? Well, we have been together 43yrs and have 2kids and 6 grandkids...cheers Rory.🍀👍
I knew Rory pretty well: first saw him in 1968 at the Woburn Abbey Festival - and then 37 times after that. I took him to supper, played his guitar hall a dozen times and spent many happy hours with him. He also played saxophone, harmonica, mandolin, slide guitar and was a great songwriter. My daughter Isobel Thatcher (new single Wings on TH-cam) met bass man Gerry McAvoy last year in London and they had a great chat about Rory and his songs. Thanks for putting him on your show. He was the finest all-round musician I’ve ever known and the kindest, politest man imaginable. RIP dear Rory, 1995.
Thanks for checking out Rory! This is really just the tip of the iceberg of Rory's spectacular musical abilities. He was a self taught multi-instrumentalist (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, alto sax and more), a brilliant songwriter and a great, unique vocalist. His catalog is so diverse encompassing electric and acoustic blues, jazz, folk, and a bit of funk. I've seen so many performers and no one comes remotely close to seeing Rory Gallagher live, in terms of music, it was life changing for me.
Of all the guitarists I have listen to - Rory will always be number 1. Brian May, Clapton, Gary Moore etc...all speak highly of him. Gone far too early. Such a humble person- wish that there were more like him in the world today.
I saw Rory six times and on one occasion actually met him and his long term bass player Gerry McAvoy. Two more humble, modest men you couldn't meet. Rory was a proud Irishman and a great ambassador for his Country who left us all a great legacy with his albums and, with me my memories. His death from complications following a liver transplant robbed us of a genius and a genuinely decent, humble man.
Saw Rory live in 1979, 3+ hours concert, he was unique, so genuine! The medication he took for years for his fear of flying ruined his liver, he literally performed until he dropped, was playing in Amsterdam when he collapsed on stage due to liver failure. He had the transplant but caught MRSA in the hospital ward and died in 1995 at 47.
I spent most of my childhood listening to Rory Gallagher, because it was mostly all my dad played around the house and on car journeys (along with some Cream, Groundhogs, Pink Floyd etc). I couldn't appreciate him as a child, but he's always on my playlist as an adult. I remember the day he passed away. My dad came home from work with tears in his eyes and said he'd just heard on the radio that Rory had died. It was one of the few times I've seen him cry. It was like we had lost a family member. That's how deep Rory meant to his fans 😢
I'm relatively new to Rory Gallagher Harri a music loving guitar player friend told me to listen and after this one song down the rabbit hole I went and couldn't believe I never heard of this top tier guitar player. You can actually see he becomes one with the guitar and also sings while playing. His passion and love of what he does shows on his face Thank you for such a wonderful appreciation and reaction to Rory

For his early stuff, "Sinner Boy" or "What's Going On?" with his first band Taste at the 1970 Isle of Wight festival shows his mad skills at the age of 23. A good quality video of a later piece is "Don't Start Me Talkin'" Cologne 1990. At 42, he didn't have the same high energy to run all over the stage, but his stage presence is still amazing and his guitar skills mature. Please explore more of his wonderful catalog and introduce Rory to a new generation.
A live Rory show was amazing.Rory started on the showband scene where bands would have 6 or more members they played for hours in ballrooms with up to 3000 people dancing .Showbands played anything from Irish traditional through country and rock and roll to the hits of the day. Showbands were driving all over Ireland.,a band could travel from cork to Portrush a round trip of 600 miles in a van or coach ! For a young Rory check out the Fontana showband and the song slow down in 1964. You know it's Rory in seconds with the vocal and his playing

Check out the other numbers, particularly Shadow Play and the encore with Hellcat.Greatest guitarist that I ever saw and his energy on stage was just insane.
Couldn’t agree more James. I remember queuing in the longest queue to see Blackmore when he launched his solo career and he was amazing but Rory will always be my number one. Saw him in the 7Os into the 80s and he or his band never disappointed. Went to see Gerry McAvoy’s band last month in London and Gerry did Rory proud. Miss the G Man as do many of his loyal fans. Harri, after you're done with Rory's solo career, you should look into his first official first band TASTE. I recommend any footage taken from the Isle Of Wight Festival 1970. Powerful trio of blues, progression, hard rock and even jazz! Enjoy!
I saw Rory only the once as Western Australia is not all that convenient a place to visit but it was a memorable concert and I have been a fan for over 50 years. the man was an underrated genius and a true gentleman. It is surprising that someone like Harri had not heard of him. all of his music is excellent and his live perfomances never missed a beat. RIP Rory, the angels have some nice music to listen to.
I saw Rory Gallagher times live !!!! He was the most exciting guitar player imaginable !!! No.1 in the World with Jimi Hendrix ... !!! Soo much talent. I love him ..Thanks for the joy you brought to my life !!!! 😊
In 1971 I went to the Peachtree festival in Rockingham NC. At the end of a long day the last act was Rory Gallagher. Had never heard of him. A while later I picked up his Tattoo album at The original Tower records for $1. Great, great album.
Harri, Rory played on Jerry Lee Lewis' "London Sessions" album in 1973. You heard correctly. Rory, due to ill health and some bad career decisions, should have been a much bigger star. After a star-making performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, he was approached by Led Zep's manager, Peter Grant, for a management contract but declined, as earlier misadventures with previous managers made him very wary of having anyone but his brother manage him. Nice debut on the channel. Thanks Miss B and Harri.
Thank you John for the added info. I just got into Rory only a couple of years ago and he blew me away Not only was his playing incredible he looks like he's loving what he does
He didn't actually want to be a famous star - he just enjoyed playing. FYI it is reported that when Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world he replied "I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory"
@@missblondie2393 Yes, you're right, he loved his guitar and playing and singing!! I love Rory, he played what he feels, not what the music industry asked🎸🎶
Rory’s decision to go with his brother Donal, rather than Peter Grant ensured Rory being in charge. He was stubborn about some things, like not releasing singles. Rory was known in the states because he toured here relentlessly for decades, but it wasn’t possible to become a household name in the states without radio exposure. Maybe you can call that a bad career move, but Rory was his own man.
In fact the 4 tunes he plays on are coincidentally the best tunes on the Killers London Sessions LP. Rorys nightmare was to have a big hit single. He fought tooth and nail against it his whole career. He did not want to be sucked into the "cloak and dagger limousine lifestyle" of rock stars.
If you ever end up in Ireland there is a Rory Gallagher rock n blues festival in Ballyshannon Co Donegal every year (he was born there, moved to Cork when he was about 8). People come from all over the world to rock out in a small Irish village every year, it's awesome :)
Rory was a savage on stage. Very underrated. He liked to fly under the radar, kind of shunned the limelight. I believe he was approached to join the Rolling Stones at one point but declined.
I seen him in Galway 1983 he was class.Every year in Ballyshannon Donegal ireland there is a Rory Gallagher festival where rock and blues bands from all over Europe come .it's a incredible festival I'm just back from it older rockers from all over the world. Well worth a visit I've re booked for next year.its A must
I am very happy you brought old Rory to the channel. What a pity he passed away so young.Think about the music he could have made and still be making! Raw energy on electric guitar and also superb on acoustic.Always showing his devotion for the old blues and mixing blues scales with Irish music licks.Genius!!!
saw Rory in 1973 i did not know who he was.. he opened up for Deep Purple at the time when they were peaking , Rory and his band were on fire and blew the roof off the place. he left the audience in a frenzy after doing an encore the crowd was standing on their chairs demanding more chanting his name over and over.. as good as Purple were back them he made it difficult for them that night. the next day i went out and bought everything he made and became a fan for decades
I was lucky enough to see Rory many times in the late 60s and early 70s, both with Taste and with his eponymous band after Taste broke up. He was an amazing live performer - the energy went on for the whole gig, often two hours or more! He would play his beat up Strat, use a Telecaster for fantastic slide guitar, sometimes an old Gretsch as well. He could also play mandolin and beautiful acoustic guitar as well as saxophone. Try “Bullfrog Blues” or “In your town” for slide playing or “Wave myself goodbye” for acoustic (with guest Vincent Crane from Atomic Rooster on piano). Never saw a below par performance once in all those years - he loved playing for his fans and gave it his all. A quiet gentleman off stage and an influence on Brian May, who spoke very highly of him.
I seen Rory in 69, 70 and 71. He came to Belfast every Christmas when no other band would play there because of the conflict. Rory made up for no other band playing there as he was just amazing and all that was required to satisfy a blues lovers taste. I still listen to his music and never tire of it. There was nobody like Rory. At times he brings tears of joy to my eyes. What a musician.
We all rocked out to Rory back in the day. There was always one of his albums on the turntable at some stage of the night at any rockin' party. AAAH! the memories.
So you have to watch Rory Gallagher - Taste, Sugar Momma. Live in 1971. The guy was like 22 maybe 23. And ask yourself, Where did he get his soul from. It’s quite amazing.
If Rory Gallagher has to be explained to you you need to change your career, the ABSOLUTE BEST and off stage he was the most humble guy you could ever meet,my oldest Son is named for him,I'm proud to say. The best that ever came out of IRELAND. HE MADE THE GUITAR SING. A las no longer with us.
It's actually a bit embarrassing when these reactiion guys come out with whatever crap they have to say about Rory. If they have never heard of him, all that tells me is is that they have an extremely limited knowledge of the music of which they purport to have an opinion. He didn't even know Rory was dead. F**k off. You haven't a clue. Go and do some reactions on some boy band with no talent.
After a concert, I was asked out for a drink by two gentlemen, Rory and his brother Donal. Took a shine to my sister and I. And believe me. After he opened his gig with this very song, the place erupted. I was so bowled over by Rory's music during this era, and his concert that nothing has bettered it since. The energy during the gig was amazing, it lasted for over 2 hours. There were no barriers between fans and the band, afterwards, my younger self met Rory and I fell head over heels for this unassuming shy gentleman. Presently, I have been, and have been for some now time writing a book that includes an up-close observation, of meeting Rory Gallagher and with that, I give a snapshot of his lifestyle on the road. Recently, contacted his brother, who remembers me, and has no issue with my account. However, since then, the book concept has morphed. I hope to finish the project soon. But for now, folks you will have to wait just a little while longer.
I do hope your book is coming along splendidly. Your story sounds so lovely, and evocative of a much more innocent time in Ireland. God bless your path.
@@zepmaid Just what I needed to hear. Thank you. Aside, I am having a rotten time at the mo and my writing has come to a halt for now. But I hope to be writing again soon. It has taken me decades to open up about meeting Rory and what happened that night and a long time to write it down. In doing so, I have felt so many emotions and come to terms with much more but now I love my story which is the best rock 'n' roll fairy tale ever. Written through my youthful eyes. I knew at the time Rory was a major artist but he was such a humble man it was easy to forget. He actually teased me something chronic, at first I thought he did not like me....After he saw my reaction he burst into laughter, and I was not pleased. So he laughed even louder. Though, I did not meet Rory in Ireland. I met him in England. You are correct of course. The era which I speak of was so much kinder and innocent. We just loved music and had that in common.
Sad i ne er got to see him, he died when i was young. Thanks for showing this, he was an Irish gem. Try his live performances of 'Shadow Play'. Also incredible
Thank you for sharing HarriBest, The bass player is Gerry McAvoy who plays Rory's stuff with "A band of friends" Ted McKenna on drums has sadly passed, and Ted has a back catalogue to check out to, respect for the Jerry Lee Lewis spot, Rory recorded with him in 1971 in London...thank you
There are no other members in that band, only Rory Gallagher, Gerry McAvoy (Bass) and Ted McKenna (Drums). Rory played the longest time as a 3-piece, earlier he had a Keyboarder too, i.e. Lou Martin during 1974 Irish Tour. Rory for me was not only one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he was THE performer. He was no rockstar-like snob, when you watch his concerts, you will see him climb off the stage, interact with the audience and he loved it. As the old german music lover i am....Rory and his worn-out Stratocaster....the best Ireland gave to the world! 🤘
I'm so glad that you finally did a reaction on my favourite guitarist of all time. I have seen him live a couple of times and it was like nothing else just pure love for his music. I was deeply saddened when I heard of his death but he was sick for quite some time and it was so sad when I saw him last in 1991 he wasn't just the same although he did some good shows after that before his death. You will find many great performances here on YT one I want to mention is "Do you read me" from Rock goes to college
I don't remember the 1st time I heard Rory, my older brother was always playing him so naturally i beca,e a fan, it must be a treat to hear him for the 1st time.
There is a street named after him in Dublin. Sometimes, the best artists never get the worldwide recognition they deserve. Guitarists know all about him.
Saw rory 11 time from 77 onwards...free tradehall, Manchester, apollo more than once , Palace, International 2 , Leicester de montford, Stoke Loughborough University, lyceum ballroom London. Always fantastic. Just the best. Always thought the 4 piece band with lou and Rod tge best but that may be my age. ..😂😂
"This guy plays his guitar like it stole his girlfriend and he's out to get revenge." Absolutely beautifully said. I also like your voice, attitude, reaction and humility. I just subscribed. Thanks Harri. Nailed it my friend! I would also like to mention how much I appreciate your openness at not knowing about his passing. That is what makes you so unique. Too many "experts" out there and to see and hear an intelligent human being expressing how moved he is, is well, beautiful. "Too many diamonds in my ears." I hope you keep hearing those diamonds my friend.
Rory got to play with one of his idols, Albert Collins, in a jam session. Just type in their names and Funk jam (2parts) in TH-cam it will come up. You won't be disappointed.
I'm in my sixties and Rory was the soundtrack of my life. Saw him live several times and met him once. It's wonderful to see somebody discovering Rory for the first time.
Rory Gallagher, Jeff Beck, Peter Green, Bert Jansch, John Martyn, - Jimmy Page was never as narrowly focused - Clapton never came close. Bill Nelson, Joe Walsh, TS McPhee, of course. Nice to see Mr Gallagher getting some recognition. Proper artist.
I see that you're reacting to Rory Gallagher today!I haven't watched the reaction yet, but I want to thank you for doing the video. No one knows about Rory anymore. Of practicing musicians today, the only ones who I've heard mention Rory are Steve Earle, Slash, and Brian May.
He was inspirational to so many players Jimmy Page , Johnny Marr , Brian May and many more all rate him highly ,he got recognition from other musicians and that really is what matters. check out documentary films IRISH TOUR and GHOST BLUES about this likeable very talented musician song writer .
Harri, please consider doing "A Million Miles Away" from the Irish Tour '74 album. Make sure it is the performance from the Cork city hall from the 40th Anniversary remaster. Some fine live playing on that one. One of my favorites of all time.
It's when you hear other guitarists speak of Rory Gallagher that you realize he was only underrated in terms of popularity by music fans. Sadly, that's true for many great musicians who have gone unnoticed because they don't play to the music industry machine and the processed crap they feed to the fans. Jimi Hendrix, Brian May of Queen, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Slash of Guns 'n' Roses all had so much esteem for him. What I loved most about him was the breadth and depth of his catalogue and styles. He excelled at every genre and you never got the same old stuff from him. Who else but him could rock an arena with nothing but a mandolin (Going to My Hometown from Live in Europe)?
Took a girl to see Rory at Sheffield city Hall, she didn't have clue who he was? Well, we have been together 43yrs and have 2kids and 6 grandkids...cheers Rory.🍀👍

Rory was superb! Brilliant! 💖🌷✨👏👏👏
I just got into Rory only a couple of years ago and he blew me away
Not only was his playing incredible he looks like he's loving what he does
He didn't actually want to be a famous star - he just enjoyed playing.
FYI it is reported that when Hendrix was asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world he replied "I don't know, you'll have to ask Rory"
@@missblondie2393
Yes, you're right, he loved his guitar and playing and singing!!
"I Wonder Who....Rory Gallagher Live in Belfast" is a MUST!
Well worth a visit I've re booked for next year.its A must
Rory was the greatest of Them all
Sadly forgotten.
never forgotten
Gone but never forgotten.
Not by me!
I am very happy you brought old Rory to the channel. What a pity he passed away so young.Think about the music he could have made and still be making! Raw energy on electric guitar and also superb on acoustic.Always showing his devotion for the old blues and mixing blues scales with Irish music licks.Genius!!!
He was always so underrated, he was an awesome musician!
saw Rory in 1973 i did not know who he was.. he opened up for Deep Purple at the time when they were peaking , Rory and his band were on fire and blew the roof off the place. he left the audience in a frenzy after doing an encore the crowd was standing on their chairs demanding more chanting his name over and over.. as good as Purple were back them he made it difficult for them that night. the next day i went out and bought everything he made and became a fan for decades
He's on my list of musicians I desperately wish I'd heard live.
A quiet gentleman off stage and an influence on Brian May, who spoke very highly of him.
he even played electric sitar, a coral. You can hear it in the song "Philby" i.e.I recommend Montreux 1985
🎶✌️🎵💜🎸
We all rocked out to Rory back in the day. There was always one of his albums on the turntable at some stage of the night at any rockin' party. AAAH! the memories.
pinch harmonics @2:42 are crazy!
So you have to watch Rory Gallagher - Taste, Sugar Momma. Live in 1971. The guy was like 22 maybe 23. And ask yourself, Where did he get his soul from. It’s quite amazing.
Rory Gallagher is one of my favorites! Don’t know why a lot of people do not know him
If Rory Gallagher has to be explained to you you need to change your career, the ABSOLUTE BEST and off stage he was the most humble guy you could ever meet,my oldest Son is named for him,I'm proud to say.
Our Ruarì! One of our greatest exports. We are a tiny island but punch above our weight with talent!
🇮🇪☘️
Gary Moore also another brilliant blues man
After a concert, I was asked out for a drink by two gentlemen, Rory and his brother Donal.
We just loved music and had that in common.
jerry and rory had record together, you right he had an influence.
Ah Rory he was the best 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Yep theres the man right there . Totally original and had it all. He wiped them all out for sure dynamite and class
God bless you for your appreciation and carrying on the rockin' blues tradition!
Sad i ne er got to see him, he died when i was young. Thanks for showing this, he was an Irish gem. Try his live performances of 'Shadow Play'. Also incredible
The best ever
Thank you for sharing HarriBest, The bass player is Gerry McAvoy who plays Rory's stuff with "A band of friends" Ted McKenna on drums has sadly passed, and Ted has a back catalogue to check out to, respect for the Jerry Lee Lewis spot, Rory recorded with him in 1971 in London...thank you
Irelands best, ever! Sadly missed, every day, but we`ve got his music.😍🤩
you should listen to "hands off" from the beat club sessions.... And thanks for giving him a platform! Rory always will live on!
. . . .and I like you gave a credit tothe bass player and the drummer - WHAT aline up!!!
Saw him twice live, consummate showman, miss him so much!
I was lucky enough to see Rory in concert a few times, unbelievably nice man, one of the best.
Totally underrated. Have a listen to Million Miles Away and Walk on Hot Coals from his Irish Tour 74 album.
There's one in France too.
Rory released a studio album entitled "Calling Card" (1976???)....a wonderful album.....and stands up.
When asked what its like to the best guitarist in the world, Jimi Hendrix replied I don't know you have to ask Rory Gallagher. True Story.
Fake story., nothing more than a myth. Hendrix never said it and you'll never find any actual interview where he did.
Most people here in "the states" have never heard of Rory Gallagher. A German friend introduced me to his music in 74 and I have loved him ever since.
After college, I listened 2 Rory. For hours, I was 13 Then best memory, I'm now 64 Ta Rory
Saw rory 11 time from 77 onwards...free tradehall, Manchester, apollo more than once , Palace, International 2 , Leicester de montford, Stoke Loughborough University, lyceum ballroom London. Always fantastic. Just the best. Always thought the 4 piece band with lou and Rod tge best but that may be my age.
..😂😂
Thanks you so much with your reaction to rory I think shin kicker was rory best song and your reaction harri is first class and genuine ❤❤❤❤
Shin kicker was his opener an hour and a half later he closed with Shadiw Play.
He like to run Shadow Play till the house cut the power too.
I was lucky, saw him live 4 times. Loved him. I have a copy of his guitar hanging on my wall. Thanks.
Loved your comments Harri , I first saw Rory and the band in 1974 at the tender age of 14 !! Blown away 😊
Thank you for sharing Rory was a one off we will never see another like hem❤
Rory and his band= excellence. Saw him back in the mid 70s. Great review Harri.
Rory could play with intendsity and energy for a 3 hour show and adhered to the rule of Irish musicians "send them home sweating"!!
I love Rory such a great guitarist. Thanks for sharing Miss Blondie and Harri.💞
So glad you liked Rory Diane
He was so unbelievable
🎵💜🎶
I seen him with his band Taste in 1969 open for Blind Faith in St. Louis. Jim
It was his blues, touring for months all around the world Is great, but heavy at the same time,... I love too this song
Thanks for checking this guy out. I had the good fortune to see him in the early 70's and was just blown away.
