Rory was obviously amazing, but to me what's even more mind-blowing was that he was only 23 at the time of this performance. Leading his own band, writing his own material and being recognized as a world class guitar player.

My buddies and I went to a Deep Purple concert at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium in 1973. The opening act was this Irish dude named Rory Gallagher. We were all blown away by his playing so much that everyone cheered for 2 more encores. It was insane. We all became avid Rory fans and bought many of his albums for our house parties. Rory inadvertently stole the show from DP that night.

The sight of you @ 8:40 trying those licks and blowing it was hilarious. I applaud your courage, though, because I could never even ATTEMPT those licks. Which brings up what I’ve often thought about Rory. One almost has to be a professional player, or a knowledgeable historian, or both, to appreciate the subtlety of his technique and his command of his sources that made him what he was - which in turn may be why he was never as popular as he should have been.
The first time I heard Rory was at a buddy’s house - “The Last Time.” I sat bolt upright staring at the speakers, and thought “This is it. This is greatness.” And I never changed my mind.

I remember this video and your discussions with Martin at Beat Club (Hamburgh?). This was personal for me since I sincerely believe this is the greatest version of this song by Rory ever. And I told Martin this, and he had to believe me since I probably listened to it over four hundred times in the last decade. I wrote several mails to support you, and he was really great and I'm so glad that this has worked out well.
When Jimi died, Guitar Magazine had to have a winner for their greatest guitarist poll.
If Terry Katz won, I wouldn't have been sad. But it was Rory. And I don't think there was one guitarist in the world that regretted the choice. This song alone shows why.
Why didn't Rory have a larger following? Maybe it was all those 9th chords, played to perfection. Maybe it was his repertoire, which didn't hit the "pop" charts.
The hundreds of thousands of Rory fans won't mind that he didn't have pop success.

I've seen another video where Rory's unusual variations on scales were discussed as you have done here. I can tell you pretty confidently nobody else in my high school was listening to Rory. This was about when I discovered ZZ Top’s Tres Hombres. Johnny Winter, BB King and the Allman Brothers were also my “teachers.”

So great that you revisited this performance. I believe I read that Rory convinced his mom to let him get that Fender Strat by saying with a guitar like that he can do both rhythm and lead at the same time so he could get 2 salaries as a musician. Looks and sounds like he was being honest with his mom.

Made my day with this one, Fil! Thank you for more Rory! Great choice of song to analyze by my all-time favorite musician, listen to him every day. Saw him on my 20th birthday, 44 years ago tomorrow. You really point out the many nuances in this performance which one would really need to see many times to get. Would love to see you take a look at some of his stuff with Taste, and also some of his later material, which was so beautifully seasoned...

Saw Rory numerous times in NYC and the surrounding area. Always, always a great show. In clubs he'd frequently do an early, then late show, changing things up completely; with the late show being at least 2.5 to 3 hours. And let's not overlook his acoustic, slide and mandolin playing; Rory was one of a kind and still missed by his many fans. My son's middle name is Rory, in memory of the great he was. As a correction; FIL it's Laundromat, not Laundramat. Thanks for acknowledging The G-man.

Thanks Fil I never tire of watching you break down Rory's music. As you say, there is so much more going on than what meets the eyes and ears at first blush. Playing the tune is one thing getting to actually sound like that is another whole encyclopedia. Most viewers probably don't stop to contemplate it but it doesn't escape me that you are an exceptionally good player to be able to tackle these tunes at all much less get the very close approximations of Rory's tone and dynamics that you achieve. I was 20 minutes into it before I noticed your Rory t shirt peeking out of your hoodie. It is pretty clear you really are a serious fan and I appreciate it very much. Please keep em coming.

Really enjoyed you taking this amazing piece of playing apart. For me (saw him 20 times) it was this flow of brilliant melody in his solos.. never played the same track identically live.. he improvised as he felt it. I’ve seen a lot of great bands but Rory always stood out.
It was like he was connecting into something magical .. it was happening whilst he was playing out his feeling for the blues , You felt it watching him .. a highly uplifting emotional experience.

Great insight to Rory's style, I think key to it is not just blues guitar but that bounce you spotted in his phrasing comes more from traditional Irish music, that is full of triplet feel but the beat is 4/4. Rory went to many Irish trad. Festivals, a close friend of mine saw him in a pub during the Lisdoonvarna festivals of the eighties when he wasn't playing but soaking up the atmosphere and music.

Very nice Fil; it does illustrate very well just how darned good this guy was, and the extraordinarily unusual soloing: it’s not yer standard pentatonic riffing.
Agee with you 100% about quoting modes: can’t bear it. Reminds me of deathly nights listening to incredibly skilful jazzers boring everyone sh**less with scale riffing - quite awful.
And, thank Goodness, you pointed out that the lead chord is an A-sus2, and not an Amin (or Amin 7th) that all the copiers play.
The definitive version of this is on Live in Europe, which I reckon is damn’ nearly unplayable.
As I’ve said before, I met this lovely guy many times and he let me play (ha!) his old Strat. He had hands like malt shovels and the heaviest gauge strings imaginable. How he played them, heaven knows. And yes, he hates pedals, as did Roy Buchanan, who used an old Tele straight into an AC30.
Wilgar and Gerry are superb; my daughter Isobel met Gerry earlier this year and he was delighted that a young lass knew all the classic Rory songs! They had such a good chat.
Another excellent video. Thank you. 😁🎸

Breaking this down the way you have has made me appreciate Rory a lot more than I have.
