I used to do some work for the Performing Right Society(PRS) who are responsible for paying royalties to songwriters and publishers. One day I was attending one of their meetings and met a songwriter called Mick Leeson. I asked him what songs he had written and he said 'you may have heard of Would I Lie To You by Charles and Eddie'. I very nearly fell over. It's one of my favourite songs I spluttered embarrassingly!
I smiled throughout this entire reaction. It's such an amazing and uplifting song and i'm so glad you both loved it, especially Amber who lit up during this reaction and that made my day
Fan fact, Elton John convinced BBC radio to play this song, that's how they became a hit in Europe and in Africa. And I actually found out this year that they are American! All these years I thought they were British. R.I.P Charles Pettigrew.
I literally just found out now reading your comment they aren't British 🙈 total shocker 😅 not kidding!! growing up in the UK in the 90s this was a Summer time banger for years, it has that typical British 90s sounding simply red, big mountain chaka demus & Pliers reggae, dance, soul vibe. Ah the good old days. When one hit wonders stood the test of time. Much love ❤🇬🇧
Forgot about this song. It’s got it all. Amazing voices as well as flawless harmonies. Great hook with back up singers that almost sound like instruments themselves. Total toe tapper. One of the better songs that came out the 90s. Thanks for reacting to it. Brought a smile to my face
@@haagenneldeberg6787 It was number 1 in the UK for a couple of weeks in late November 1992,in between End of the Road by Boyz II Men and I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston. International hit. Not so much after this one. edit - now contrast this with The Eurythmics "Would I Lie To You? " (totally different song) Both are GREAT!!!
That's the song I first thought of when I saw the title. This is a decent song, great for bee bopping with your friends, great falsetto, but......Annie Lennox! Her voice and delivery on the other one are outstandingly memorable. ❤
I was just checking the background on Charles & Eddie and discovered Charles Pettigrew was born on May 12th. He shares a birthday with my mom and dad (Yes, my parents were born on the same day!), which just endeared him to me. I remember grooving to the song when I was hitting the dance floor at clubs in L.A. in the 90's. Rest in paradise, Charles. Thanks for sharing the gift of your beautiful voice.
These guys had a great sound. This song was their biggest hit along with 3 others that hit big on the charts. They performed together for about 9 years but only put out 2 albums. Unfortunately, at the end of that 9 years, Charles died of cancer at the age of 37 in 2001. Their soulful and bluesey sound lives on.
Thank you for playing this. I was hoping you would get around to this great song! This is my favorite one hit wonder the only song that these two guys ever did together. The singer with the Long hair is still alive but the other one passed of cancer.
This record is almost perfection, except for that moment when Charles is singing from his heart "would I lie to you, baby, would I lie to you?" and Eddie is going "oh yeah"...
It's been too long since I've last heard this song! I agree this would still be a hit played on the radio today! I was chair dancing with Amber to this one! Thanks for your reactions.
When this came out it was just straight up fun. I remember it as being late summer 1992 and it was one of those songs you played while in the car with your “summer love” to wrap up your time off and recall all the experiences that occurred over the vacation. Its popularity continued into the fall and was listened heavily to while riding with my back to school crush. Lol This was an era of fun in music that is sadly over now … until the great music renaissance anyway. One can dream.
Hey Jay & Amber, this duo's considered a one hit wonder, but this track I've suggested was their next biggest charting song, if interested. "Charlie & Eddie - NYC (Can You Believe This City) Live 1993" (by the channel: The Midnight Special) It showcases the pairs harmonies and vocal range. Eddie Chacron (light skin) went on to become a songwriter, record producer and photographer and I believe he's dropped another record recently. peace Out~
I'm so glad they finally got to this, I've requested this song for so,so long. This song has always been such a groove with two of the best singers❤❤❤❤Thanks Amber and Jay
Yes, when they hit a falsetto or Sax Riff, she stars Swaying her shoulders and looks at hubby like... we need a babysitter tonight.. call your sister! LOL!
That's the thing about decades. Eventually they always go retro to an earlier one. The 90's did retro 70's. A huge wave of Neo-Soul music came out in droves and also some retro pop gimmick sounds. For example: Remember the videos for Groove is in the heart and Love Shack?
In 2020 this song came on the radio while I was at work and I hadn't heard the song since the 90s. I downloaded the song and played it on repeat for about 3 months straight. Awesome song. The song has been in my regular rotation ever since.
AL B.SURE - " Nite and Day " Best New R&B SONG and Artist of 1988 this is A Must Hear for this channel right from the beginning this song has such an Amazing Sound and SOULFUL VOCALS you guys gonna LUV it a lot it's a Groovy 80s Vibe

Wow this is a real blast from the past. I had no idea what it was until the music started..it came back to me immediately 😊. Thanks, this was a fun one! ☮️
Very very good song Rob Amber you enlighten me to new song that very good song thank you Let me also add that I enjoy watching both of you what great hosts!!!!
Just checked, you haven't reacted to Sananda Maitreya yet either, late 80s, start with his song "Wishing Well". Super catchy and also a massive hit. Your vid today has me going down a high school rabbit hole now 😅
This song always makes me happy. I still know the entire lyrics by heart. One of the few songs from the 90's that my father also liked :-) . Another 90's song that I can sing along from start to finish is "Never Ever" by girl group All Saints.
I love this channel .....Recently discovered (about 2 weeks ago) ...have been binging ever since. How do i request (Steely Dan, P-Funk, Cameo, Classic Rock.....got some real good ones for next visits I think).....Love this channel so much TTYL
Good tune. Haven't heard this in a long time! Their voices work so well together. In this song, Charles voice almost has an Aaron Neville feel and Eddie's high voice reminds me of the singer JERMAINE STEWART who sang the song - "We don't have to take our clothes off", which you reacted to. But such a great sound.
Something I never thought about ~ We were subliminally told that Charles was listed first, seated on the left and sang first and Eddie was second listed, second seated and second to sing. We never even questioned it.
Might be Top 10 1 hit wonder all time. Amber is exactly right .. no matter the decade this song would be #1...First time I heard it in the 90s even the Radio DJ was like "WOW what a great song" salute to those brothas, one of my all time faves
Now you have to do The Eurythmics doing their 80’s song, “Would I Lie To You”. The official video is best. Annie Lennox, great back up vocals, and horns! Can’t go wrong! 😁
I remember the summer of 1992 being in the car with my mom. This played seemingly non stop on 99.7 WDJX. It definitely brings back memories every time I hear it.
The long haired (Eddie Chacon) was in a band with Cliff Burton (Metallica) and Mike Bordin when they were in high school. It can explain the headbanger look...
This would be classified as a mega one hit wonder… And still cut it today I noticed Amber reacts to lyrics more than Rob and the smile on her face the second time Charles sings “I’m telling you baby you will never find another girl in this heart of mine…” Just shows how smooth this track really is
Before I even clicked on the video, I was just thinking, "Jay and Amber are going to completely vibe with this song!"
I was thinking. Who? Great tune
I always remember Elton John promoting this song

True, but Eddie is still active and I kept following him regardless Charles passing away back in a day
I was a sophomore at Regis College at the beginning of the 1992-1993 school year when I heard this. I love it.
Lived in the same neighborhood as Charles Pettigrew. He was one of the top singers out of Berklee College of Music. Sad day when he passed.
this song is the real definition of one hit wonder.. RIP Charles 💔
Great song, Amber was rocking to it! I agree easy listening and would probably be a hit now
I had my daughter in 92 and I would hold her and dance to this song
Same as me December 92, always associate it with waiting for her arrival and her first couple of months. Happy days.
LOVE THIS SONG. Has been one of my favourites forever.
Legend has it that they met on the subway and started talking about music and the rest is history. RIP Charles 💕🎶🙏🏾

This was an international hit and introduced a whole new generation to the Motown sound
Might be one of my all time favorite songs.

I don't think I'd want to know someone who doesn't like this song, so good.
Same here 😅
Great song from the 90's. Pop, soul, sweet. This smoothie sounds just right.
Just an excellent song from late '92, the spirit of 60's soul is so strong here! Fantastic choice!
Amber is DIALED IN to this song. Completely present.
Loved the reaction ❤️
