It's no surprise, and it's no illusion. It's superb precision marching. I can't wait for them to show off at the Texas A&M - Texas rivalry renewal this year. I hope they do the flying cross.
For me- Ohio State and Texas A & M are the most entertaining bands anywhere. The University of Michigan and Michigan State are also great bands. The Million Dollar Band from Alabama is another great band program. North Texas State is arguably in the running also along with Western Carolina and Jacksonville State University from Alabama. (Sudler Cup Winner this past year). The Penn State Blue Band is also a great band to watch. Lots of great college bands.
That is so incredibly difficult and so impressive. That super tight formation is tricky and you have to know where you are on the field all the while playing your music and keeping those straight, straight lines! I played alto sax and if you have ever been bumped into while playing your instrument, well let me tell you - it HURTS like H E double hockey sticks. Watch those tubas and especially the bass drums when they are doing their turns. That drum is pretty much on the ground and they are still playing it! I’m sure it hardest on the brass instruments - trombones with that slide. This makes it that much more impressive! Go Aggies! Gig ‘em!

With such excellent precision, why are they marching here on the right foot?

Sorry, @Relaxium. Your Aggie band does a slight variation on the same old close-order drill and same old martial music game after game, year after year, decade after decade. It was very impressive the first few times I saw it, and I still enjoy it. It thrills Aggies the way repetitious religious liturgy inspires adherents to certain faith groups, but it loses its edge for the non-A&M spectators who rightfully wonder whether the marchin' Ags can do any other tricks. Ohio State's band is creative and talented enough to produce varied amazing formations and a bigger, better sound from varied tunes it plays in new and varied shows game after game, year after year. It's impressive and keeps its sharp new edge in every new performance. And the tradition of the script "Ohio" done to one of college football's best fight songs (as is A&M's) with the dotting of the "i" provides a traditional, repeated element to the show, but is only part of the show.
@Flying Eagle You nailed it! Davis has no clue as to the level of execution it takes for the Aggie Band to do its precision drills. Yes, we Aggie alumni enjoy seeing the world's biggest and best military style band; however, there are a myriad of formations they do to change up their halftime drills.
We learn these drills with about 6 hours spent on the field. And the absolute precision is what makes it impressive. Ohio creates very good performances, with maybe 95%+ accuracy. The jump to 99%-perfect accuracy is an absolutely massive one that the Aggie band takes pride in achieving, over and over again. Sorry if it’s too repetitive, but the fact that 300 people can manage to do something damn near perfect for 8 minutes straight is unheard of. Aggieland is literally built on tradition, so doing the same cool thing with a different group of people and a different drill each week is what I and all Aggies love so much.
