  • In this video I will go over ONE possible cause for a 90s era GM Delco Electronics radio to not play Compact Discs (CDs) and report "Err" on the display in Chevy GMC and Holden trucks and vans. In this particular case the problem is caused by an internal failure to properly seek the laser across the CD due to either binding of the tracking mechanism or debris obstructing the lens, affecting the lasers ability to read the encoded digital music data correctly. This all presumes you have eliminated the obvious primary reasons for this kind of error, which are a scratched or defective CD, upside down CD, moisture on the CD, or that you are trying to play a CD-R / MP3 content you made on your home computer (which these older technology CD players can't handle reliably).
    The radio I am showing in the video is the original Chevrolet dealer installed GM 15766343 for a 1998 Chevrolet truck, but all of the radios in the year range of 1995 thru 2002 of the following makes and models should be the same, or very similar, in their disassembly and approach to this maintenance repair:
    1995 - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado Chevrolet Cheyenne & GMC Sierra
    1995 - 2002 Chevrolet Suburban Chevrolet Tahoe & GMC Yukon
    1996 - 2005 Chevrolet Astro & GMC Safari
    1996 - 2000 Chevrolet Express & GMC Savana
    1999 - 2002 Cadillac Escalade
    All of the following Delco radio part numbers should be SIMILAR to the CD player mechanism I've shown in this video as well: 15071233, 15071234, 15071628, 15763279, 15763131, 15764358, 15765006, 15769357, 16218925, 16240065, 16255455, 9383075, 9375915, 9375905, 16265895 across years 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 and 2005.

    Great video! It did fix my “dirty” CD player. I would like to add that cd cleaning disk DO NOT FIX THE PROBLEM! You have to clean the laser with a Qtip and alcohol like the video states. I did exactly what the video and it producer said and it fix my problem. Make sure you disconnect the battery of the truck before you do any removal or disconnects to prevent electrical damage to components. Overall great video!

      Hmm I'll try that, my Sonoma is doing this and that was my first like theory why it wasn't working. I don't have many cds actually just would like it to work I'm strange like that. I'll probably do the Bluetooth aux mod thing if I can figure that out. Oh he did put a snippet of info there that I forgot... These can code lock with no power or something that does worry me, 26 year old truck radio wonder if anyone would even have that code.

    You were fortunate that the laser lens was just dirty. Typically, you need to replace the laser or spindle motor, or both. They work in tandem through the microprocessor. I used to repair home CD players and CD boom boxes back in the 90s for a large company. The Sonys were especially notorious for bad lasers. We used to just replace both motor/laser to get the unit back to the customer without unnecessary delay. Sony said that if you needed to adjust the laser power to get it to work, then just replace the laser. There's also an laser eye pattern you need to check on a scope. Sometimes with a slightly dirty laser, the songs will just skip a bit and still play, even with a spotless disc. Anyway, good job on the repair.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks, yeah but after two plus decades component level repair isn't as practical an option anymore as the parts were discontinued long long ago. Theres also no schematics published by Delco so determining a failed IC chip is out of the cards. Had the spring clean approach I videoed not worked out, my next one would have been to adjust the laser power output. Failing that, toss it in the recycle bin and try with another CD assembly from a salvage yard vehicle with the same part numbered radio.

      Maybe, but I would check the speakers first. You can work the F--R and L--R fader knobs to zero in on whether its all of the L side (Drivers) or just the F or R speakers that have cut out. After over 20 years the paper in these speakers is going bad, I've seen quite a few go in the last couple of years.

    Did this service and cleaned the eye and all the gears looked good. It accepts the cd then spits it back out and i get the ERR code. I tried two different cd players from one from my old unit and one from the junk yard. Any suggestions? May be the main part of the radio?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  24 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If the error persists across two different CD drive units, that have been cleaned and lubricated on their mechanisms, then yes I would begin to suspect an issue with the main circuit board, or the wiring harness between them.

  • @yarelim7944
    @yarelim7944 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Question? Mine says error but won’t take the cds or eject them? Is it just broken and done for??

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I haven't run into that problem yet, but if I had this issue I would still _partially_ disassemble it to see if I saw anything that might be binding up the gears (could be an easy fix). You can try lubricating the points I went over, and giving the drive motor a nudge at the main gear with a plastic tool. If no joy then yeah, the options are either a replacement CD drive assembly or a replacement radio. A part like the drive assembly would have to come from a radio shop, GM never sold them.

    Buen tutorial Dr. Shock:
    La verdad es que hace años ya le gane en hacer este servicio en mi Suburban 98, la unidad CD esta separado , para mi es mas facil y con el presentimiento de mayor durabilidad ya que no recibe todo el calor de los ic's de amplificación de audio Y demás componentes electrónicos.
    La diferencia de usted yo si tuve un poco mas de tiempo o paciencia para abrir el mecanismo lector de CD limpiar y lubricar todo.
    Una pregunta ? Dr. Shock. Lellendo en foros especializados de electrónica y preguntando a radio-técnico me comentan que puedes sopletear el lente,
    pero el usar aerosoles como el alcohol isopropílico o un cotton tips no es muy recomendable,
    Ya que reseca a la larga lente lector o se puede rayar dificultando la lectura del CD.
    Ahora si usted me dice que, para los años que tiene el stereo y como una forma de exprimir si vida útil.
    O.k. yo lo entenderé.
    Pero en general lo que yo e tenido de experiencia es que hay que darle uso de vez en cuando al CD. Porque si dejas pasar el tiempo y tu vives en lugares mucho polvo en el ambiente hay que volver hacer el procedimiento de limpieza, porque no sales del mensaje de "error" aquí donde fuera bueno poner algun líquido antiestático y repelente de polvo donde se pueda bajar el sistema sin que afecte la lente lectora del láser o ya de pérdida un pedazo de cinta a la entrada de inserción del CD 😂😂😂.
    Gracias por su respuesta como comentario. 🙋

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cuanto más utilice el reproductor de CD, menos probabilidades tendrá de que se produzcan problemas. El alcohol isopropílico eliminará la lubricación de las piezas móviles y no debe utilizarse. Pero no dañará la lente láser si se hace con poca frecuencia. El algodón es más abrasivo de lo que es preferible, pero no es práctico conseguir un paño de microfibra para limpiar lentes en un área tan reducida.
      The more you use the CD player, the less likely you have problems occur. Isopropyl alcohol will remove lubrication from moving parts and should not be used. But it will not harm the laser lens when done infrequently. Cotton is more abrasive than preferable, but it is not practical to get a lens cleaning microfiber cloth in such a confined area.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  ปีที่แล้ว

      Several possibilities for root cause. I'd check the speaker wiring harness first. If that checks out it's very likely a defect on the radio circuit board itself. You might try cleaning the pins on the connectors in back before going for a replacement.

    • @DrShock

      Without the "ERR" message, it could be something more serious such as a dead controller circuit board for the CD drive. There are no replacement parts sold anymore for these, so my advice would be to hit up your local pull your own parts salvage yard, like an LKQ, and get the _exact_ same year and radio part number out of a donor truck. Then swap over the CD drive mechanism.

    • @DrShock

      I kinda remember these proprietary Delco radios of the 90s being 1.5 DIN high but wider than 2 DIN because of the heat sinks they have. Not 100% sure, but it's definitely not single and different than double.

    cd won"t be either loaded or ejected itself. What cause the problem? Can it be repaired?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Typically this kind of behavior is traced to a failure of the rubber roller that rolls in, and rolls out, the CD at the front of the CD drive assembly. It can also be the drive gears for the roller, such as shown at 9:48. Either way it's not repairable if any parts are damaged as there are no separate parts available. So you'll need to locate a better CD drive assembly from a salvage yard donor to repair this sort of problem.
