Delco ETR radio - repair static, thumping, popping, and right-channel weak audio...

  • In this rather lengthy video, I repair a 1989 Cadillac radio. This style of radio was used from the mid 1980's to the mid 1990's in various General Motors cars. They came in different trim levels, with the best ones having a 5-band equalizer, searching tape deck, and 100W amplifier.
    A very common problem with these radios comes as they age. There are some electrolytic capacitors on the board, which fail due to age. These are related to the right-side amplifier channels. As they become leaky (electrically leaky) they cause static, rumbling, popping, thumping and other strange noises on the right speakers. Then they begin physically leaking electrolyte solution onto the circuit board. This starts a corrosive process that damages the board.
    Here, I disassemble the radio, remove the amplifier board, remove the bad capacitors, clean the board, install new capacitors, and then test / re-assemble the unit.
    As with all electronic repairs, there is always a chance it will not be feasible to repair this. I have had about an 80% success rate with this repair.

    Replaced lots of caps over time in radios and instrument panels in factory authorized service. We weren’t allowed to use water. We used alcohol based cleaner. Any micro sized caps in late 80’s and more in the 90’s failed. And often in 90’s instrument panels bad caps were a major problem. Lots of boards were replaced due to foil damage.

    Great video! I've been around many expensive cars and hi end home audio. I grew up in a GM family. My parents and relatives all drove GM cars. Those radios with the Delco 6x9's were some of the best sounding systems. We had a 90 Pontiac Grand Am with that same radio and AM Stereo. It always used to make the rear view mirror vibrate, and make the trunk rattle. Jazz, country, rock, classical - it all sounded great!

    David, thanks for doing the video. You are absolutely right, you can write all about it, but it makes a big difference to see the repair. I have to admit, I was pretty shocked to see the hot water treatment, but if the compound is only dissolved in aqueous solution you really have no choice! I've got a few of these units laying around, included that Caddy! It will be good to have this video in my pocket in case the repair is needed. I plan on doing a disassembly at some point on the Caddy to compare with the late model UX6. It may be that there are some advantages of incorporating some of the newer parts into the older radios.

      Yes, when you have water based contaminants, water is about the only way to get them off. If it was a perfect world I would have deionized water. But here in Samantha, Alabama.... we have well water. :)

    excellent delco repair video , did they ever stop putting those shorter capacitor's in the radios in the 1990's?
    I have a collection of delco mostly from dodges mid 90's into early 2000's from junk yard trips. U pick type.
    For a while a seemed to always come back with a delco radio, while looking for other items. I like the mid 90's
    neon huntsville / the stratus is newer and has the volume knob, "I dont like". I use them in my shop for shop radio
    buy buying extra speaker's at the auto junkyard & build, (using table saw), small speaker boxes out of 1/2 " plywood.
    and using a old electric cooler power supply.

    Nice - I have a similar model I've been using as a garage radio for years because it has a great receiver. It's showing the same symptoms. I figured I'd have to toss it out and replace it - this is a great fix!

    I haven't had this problem, but the only 2 I have just go haywire, scanning the tuner over and over. Pushing the buttons doesn't snap them out of it. Both of them act exactly the same way. Do you know where I can learn about mid 80s versions of these radios?

    Are there any specs on these radios? I have a 92 Caprice with the stock Delco Cassette Radio without the BOSE Option. As far as I know it is also a ETR Radio. Tried to find out how much ohm and watts they can handle but no info on that, not even in the service manuals for these model years. Since yesterday mine has a static scratching noise at the rear passenger side speaker and the bass is totally gone. Any Idea what could be the problem?

      All GM cars received the same parts on items like these, is was all a matter of options. They would change a few things to either give a different tonality or a different feature. But they all had the same chassis on these type. Now if your referring to the GMT 400 (which I'm assuming you are; given that this is a 1.5DIN). They have a Phillips chip for the amplifier on 95-up radios. And the ones in the mid 80's up till then used a DM style transistor that was particularly hard to find, which I grew up listening to these and they always worked great, and sounded great until they started failing given a short time. But the REALOLD ones that were earlier than that were of course tube type in the AM era and transistor in the later part slowly moving into the late 70s where they went to the FM flavor of options. But I know that the Cadillacs received some special options such as Bose but they were noting more than a lower impedance speaker on the later model as well as a external amp. On the 88-94 (until95) They were an in-dash unit as a pre-amp and into an amp that was modular in the dash with a external tape deck that was to me an overkill to produce a stereos components and of like most the parts on today's cars 2021+ and in reality they haven't made a good car for over 20 yrs.

    Is this a pretty common problem? I have a similar radio in my 88 Buick electrica PA and the right side barely plays. I figured the speakers were just toast, especially since the right side tweeter was constantly crackling and hissing, but it'd be kind of nice if a few caps could fix it

    what color is the leaking electroylte solution ? I have yellow all over in that area. It wouldn't be yellow would it?

    • @HD24680
      @HD24680 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually not. A leaking capacitor usually leaves a darker brown to black color on the board. It is corrosive and will damage the circuit traces if left on the area. And the caps themselves are often bulging on top, bottom, or sides, and not flat like the rest of them would be, but not always. Sometimes they will look normal. A yellow color may appear on the top of a leaking and bulging capacitor, but usually the colors on the board are darker and come from the bottom part of the capacitor where the leads are. The yellow you see on your board may have been an electronic board sealant applied to resist against moisture, or an adhesive applied to restrict component movement.

  • @longwalkshortpier
    @longwalkshortpier 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel lied to all my life. Had no idea electronic circuit boards could get wet and still function. I thought it would ruin all those capacitors. Do you have to let them dry or put them in low temp oven at least?

    How much would it cost to just shotgun that board with new caps? That's one of the things I dislike about electrolytic caps. The all eventually leak.

    • @davida1hiwaaynet
      @davida1hiwaaynet  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not much. They are cheap.
      I should do that; however I've only seen one or two others leak on these radios.
      The main reason I haven't done that is because the circuit board traces are very easy to lift while removing the old components.
