- FINAL part in the 3-part Ford Transit Tipper series!
So let's say replacement panels aren't an option; too expensive, out of stock, or unavailable for whatever reason, what then???... well, I had to just copy what was there already, but using fresh steel instead of the marshmallow, mash potato, cardboard and newspaper that whoever had been there before had used to fill up the silland wheel arch!... join me as I try and figure out how to do it as I go!... this it by no means a tutorial!
Hope you learn something from this, it's at least an insight into what I regularly have to deal with when it comes to vehicles as a mobile welder.

You certainly know your trade mate, can't beat watching a craftsman at work. I think you will get inundated with work over the next few years with people trying to keep older vehicles on the road rather than go electric.

Yes, seems to be mostly camper vans with people being almost forced to live (at least short term) in them cause property (and everything else really!) is so darn expensive!

When you have a mate whose approach to welding AND BODYWORK REPAIR IS THE SAME AS THE CLOWNS WHO PREVIOUSLY OWNED THAT DISASSTER Datsun 260Z at Yorkshire Restorations it so refreshing watching a welder fabricator do things right. Soz about the caps cant be arsed to correct.

That was Epic. Judging by the number of times the video went from daytime to night time this must have taken a while. Very solid repair and great to watch the good use of minimum tools. Hope there are more videos lined up for us to watch. Liked, subscribed and shared....you deserve it.
Cheers. Yeah, it was roughly a week overall for all 3 video's in that series (a day for the tail end and a short Sunday for the left cab side hole repair).
The plasma cutter with built-in compressor is a game changer, as is the bumper I made that can mount stuff like the vice, crane and umbrella.

It does, it gets into much tighter spaces and also allows make to gouge areas out a bite at a time if needed.

I do a lot of these - I ignore all & every shape Henry had in mind when making them. It's basically flat sheet that gets covered by the plastic step insert. Key with this repair as with most is to have balls - important - cut waaay further up than you think is necessary. It's a lot faster to weld fresh metal to good metal than it is to dick about trying to weld onto junk - so cut deep. Rebuilding off good is quicker than trying to faff about "saving" suspect areas.
Other thing I have learnt when working on these is to keep "The Mission" in mind - you are not preserving them for History - that's close to impossible. You are keeping them going for another few years before they dissolve - the idea is to weld in solid metal where there was grot. Any other "idea" is sadly dreamland in the case of these.

in french, we say " chapeau bas " that means you have my respect.
I know how this type of job asks for in situ design as nothing is standard and you can't wipe away the rotten metal, you should keep it to retain the shape and proceed demolishing and rebuilding section by section.
Even with prefabricated panels, you can't demolish and rebuild, you should process by section too

Yes, you can't just cut willy nilly as the original rusty parts are needed to figure out the shape, otherwise it's a complete guessing game, although some of this was as it had been butchered before so much.

Looking at this step it would have taken less time to take it all out in one piece then used that as a template to make another step. As to pattern part prices it would depend on how long it took to make the part against buying it and in most cases the time element is greater to hand make the part from scratch. I did these jobs for many years both making parts and fitting pattern parts as I was a sprayer and panel beater. I made parts for 1932 Morris oxford the boot part repair panel rear lower panel and both inner rear quarter panels from sheets of 8 x 4 sheet of 18g steel. Also body panels for a 1904 Crouch there were no parts available orthese vehicles.
Had I known earlier in the process how bad it was gonna be, that probably would have been the better option, even for installation, a bunch of spot welds s far easier than tons of seam welds. There is always several ways to do a job, and being mobile, I do things differently to how I'd do stuff in a workshop, even so, a garage will often bodge it and put stuff in like what I pulled from the wheel arch... filler, rubber, seam sealer, cardboard and newspaper cover it in underseal, then they'll pass the MOT for it and charge £90-£150/hr!

Sometimes I give a vague estimate, but generally I just say what I charge per hour and that it'll take as long as it takes!
I've been burned in the past (no pun intended) by quoting and having to stick to a certain amount in the past, before the wire wheel on the grinder reveals how bad things really are!
On the cracked frame on the LDV skip truck I did the other day, I found further cracks whilst the owner was out, so I left fixing them until after he got back and I could show him these other cracks that were obviously additional to my first estimate, just makes sure the customer is fine when you have to charge more than originally thought. He was a cool cat. Others can get angry and whiny, which just turns everything super awkward.

It is almost a complete guess, that's why a lot of garages will quote £1,000 each for the left side, the right side, the front and the rear (totalling £4k), but that's them covering their arses, as opposed to the garages that quote like £700, but then you get a call half way through saying it'll cost double, or another £1,500 and there's naff all you can do but pay.

On site is awkward, with minimal tools, I wouldn't be able to some of these bits without my trusty Lidl plasma cutter!... The odd shapes it can cut like a breeze and the fact it can cut into a corner and gouge off spot welds is invaluable!

There's a few around at the moment without the built-in compressor... £129.99!
Although the one with the built-in compressor cuts much better, although it doesn't have pilot arc, but that can be achieved by the wiring the tip (crocodile clip or tight eye spade) to the ground (clamp or workpiece) hack if needed!... Handy for rusty and painted metal!

There's a few on ebay but they want £250 for them..I'll wait until they get them back in. I've never used one before but sure it will come in handy. It's a Parkside PPSK 40 A1 from Lidl's! It has the built in compressor, so perfect for mobile work, not having to lug around my petrol or electric compressor, but I do also have their normal 30A plasma cutter too, which also works well, with new torch consumables, you can get an almost dross free cut, although the dross knocks off quite easily with a sharpish chisel, much quicker than grinding, sometimes a wire wheel on the grinder knocks most of it off too. Dross kills sanding pads and flap wheels cause its so harsh.
Only 2 problems I've had it water freezing (it must have been below 0 degrees C) in the air outlet that the torch hose pugs into at the front of the machine, but just pulled that plug, hit the trigger switch and it blew out the front to clear it, then plugged the torch hose back in and it was fine the rest of the day.
Second problem was the outlet hose in the top of the compressor inside the unit blew out mid job, but after taking the case off, managed to jam it back in and it's been fine for the last few months since.
Maybe I'll do a review if I get enough interest, as all the one's on TH-cam seem to be hobbyists that have never used one before and they get pretty naff cuts cause they haven't had enough practice.

It really depends what's involved; how big of a job I think it is on first glance, access (tight spaces), conditions (mud puddles), weather (ideally dry), time restraints, customers attitude (if they are genuine, polite and understanding, or if they're constantly interfering and/or down right rude) and how much I like/dislike the job... after all I got into welding for the love of it, not to be a robot (and a fall guy) for idiots, that's why I started up on my own.

Well, I'm generally still cheaper than your average garage, and I am actually a welder. I charged £1,200 for all the work in this 3-video series. I charged £30/hr for this customer as he provides quite a bit of building related work like balconies etc.

I do have those, but my petrol compressor has a constant oil leak so until I fix that I can't really use them mobile, but I'm thinking of getting a small 8 or 25l silent compressor... will only be able to use short bursts, but at least it's light enough to be 'mobile'.

Just wondering if your using gas? If not take the cover off I use this method all the time easier to see the weld and the wire.
I do... straight CO2 (half the price of argon mix and plenty good enough), much cleaner than flux core (which I've still never tried!... although I have a reel to try) but for car stuff I'll stick with gas.
Good tip though, removing the shroud, I am already aware of this from other TH-cam videos... I'll try give it a whirl soon, and also with gas for dual shield, which doesn't seem very popular here in blighty, but seems quite common stateside.

Yeah, I know flux core is the MIG equivalent of stick welding. I keep meaning to try it for heavier stuff, as it would be more productive if I had a full workshop, but for heavy stuff I just end up using stick as it requires far less power to do real heavy work compared to MIG, I can easily do structural work on a normal household plug with stick.
I think I'll have a play with flux core on some 3mm sheet. Does it fight through rust and paint like stick?... MIG can be quite fussy!... If so it would be better on some bits of these rot boxes.
@@jwweldfab I've never done stick just mig and seeming though gas is expensive I've been using fluxcore. It seems to fill holes ok when it blows on thin metal with rust, if that's what you mean and fluxcore seems to be ok on thicker 3mm metal.
Ah k cheers, I'll keep a reel of flux-core in the truck in case I run out of gas on the weekend, which, sod's law, happens more than I'd like!

Would not be easier to fit pattern part step.get home a lot earlier.
Obviously, but these aren't always available, especially if there's a tight deadline to get the vehicle through an MOT or just usable again ASAP and it's gonna take too long for pattern parts to be manufactured & shipped, I've had to wait over 2 months for pattern parts before!
next year??? you will be welding it again where it has rotted away around where you have patched it up🤣🤣🤣

@@jwweldfab as I found out with mine they rot under the strengthening plate where the rear shocks bolt too (chassis)and under the floor where the rear springs sit there's a 3 mm plate that disintegrates then the inner b posts rot. I would say T4s are just like a transit, Crap
