Bane was born in the fictional Caribbean Republic of Santa Priscia. There, his father had once been a revolutionary. Having fled at the time of Bane’s birth, the corrupt government made the newborn child carry out his father’s sentence in the hellish Prison of Pena Dura. Eventually establishing himself as the self-proclaimed king of the prison complex, he was forced to become a test subject for an experimental steroid called Venom. Altered by the drug, he escaped, only to hear tales of the dark knight. Convinced that Batman was the demonic bat that had haunted his dreams since childhood, he made his way to Gotham City to kill the caped crusader. True, he is praised as one of the most intellectual villains in Gotham, having photo graphic memory (despite being impossible in real life), and resources from the black market, he could've been the most dangerous villain in Gotham. What he lacks, however, is a reason to BE that big bad villain. Yeah, he wants to "break the bat", but compared to joker, batman seems to be a side thing for him (even though comics and movies depict him as obsessed with batman). Something better would be finding his father, and that might be why you don't see him a lot in comics or movies as anything other than a "Side brute". Meant to be taken down relatively soon.

It's not blasphemous, it's the truth. Joker couldn't harm Batman in any way even if he wanted to without the use of weapons.

Bane in Arkham Origins was one of the best interpretations of the character outside the comics.

Spencer Malley Well they had to do it for continuity. I didn't like the steroid monster portrayal of Bane in the Rocksteady games either. Origins made Bane the master strategist he was in the comics of which I am very thankful for. I also like the design of Bane in Origins instead of the Arkham Asylum one.
Bane in the first two games was horrible though.

Bane is so badass and very intelligent! That is why Bane is one of my favorite Batmanvillains because he is a challenge for Batman both mentally and psychically and he even found out Batman's secret identity really quick .

you forgot to mention that he's actually a supergenius to boot :P He knows 6 modern languages fluently, as well as the languages of Arcane and the Dead. Ra's Al Ghul stated that he's as brilliant a mind as he's ever encountered, and was so impressed that he proclaimed Bane as his heir.
I think Bane was the only person to find out Batman's true identity, but I remember a similar storyline but with Hugo Strange instead? Though can't Batman destroy Bane in an even fight with no advantages/ disadvantages on the part of either (Ignoring the Nolan films and the Knightfall storyline)?

Hugo Strange's whole thing is always based on him knowing who Batman actually is, but aside from Hugo Strange and Bane, Ra's Al Ghul and Talia Al Ghul know is true identity. Ra's is the leader of the league of assassins, which trained Batman and eventually recruited Bane. Talia wants Bruce Wayne's D

Bane's father was British, his mother was Hispanic, he was born in Guantanamo Bay/Cuba. He's Cuban. Obviously they changed the name of the country in the comic since DC doesn't use real cities/location names most of the time.

Bane's origin story in Knightfall is some of the greatest writing that has been done in comic books.
While I didn't hate Batman & Robin, I hated Bane's portrayal in the movie. They took a guy made of brain and brawn and turned him into a generic, one-dimensional, muscle-head thug.
They got the look right. But I agree . They made bane into a dumb beast

Its really interesting when you look at the two versions of Bane:
In The Dark Knight Rises, a physically deteriorated Batman whose been out of action for almost a decade gets his ass kicked by Bane, who cheats by using a pain neutralizing device, in his sewers lair. I prefer this version as it was as close to a straight up loss as you can get.Plus it made Bane a likeable villain by being such a badass.
In Knighfall, a dead tired Batman, who spent the night rounding up a bunch of escaped criminals, is confronted by Bane at the Wayne mansion. Like a lion pouncing upon a wounded gazelle, Bane defeats Batman in easy fasion, but what made it even worse was that he threw many insults as well as b*tchslapped his opponent before crippling him. From a villain's standpoint, it was a brilliant move. From the other side, Bane was the ultimate coward.
I think the comic book did everything it could to make you hate Bane. At least tried to.

I thought Nolan's take on Bane was so much more interesting than the comic book counter-part and previous movie's. Nolan's Bane retains some believability whilst making him truly dominating and intimidating. A character doesn't have to be CGI-HUGE to have an imposing and dangerous presence, and I think Tom Hardy did a really good job. Regardless of how tall or big he is in real life, it wasn't an issue in the film and I didn't even realise until I saw these comments.
Why does everyone that tells Bane's origin fail to say that he is a genius with photographic memory? Is he really JUST a brute to you guys?
He survived Peña Duro with the will and wits matching that of the Dark Knight himself. He is the dark mirror image of Batman, who has learned everything he knows through traveling while Bane was confined in a hellish prison all his life but learned a great deal of knowledge that helped him become more tenacious and ingenius than Batman. He meditated for 10 years in a 3x3 meter dungeon that gets filled with sea water everynight, even the strongest brute would not survive if his mind is weak. He learned dead languages even Batman couldnt speak, Ra's al Ghul even considered Bane to be his successor and potential husband for Talia al Ghul. Thats saying a lot for the "brute" who not only found out who Batman is, but deviced a plan to make sure he isnt gonna be jumping off buildings anytime soon.

In fact, Bane would PRETEND to be a dumb brute, just to get his opponents to underestimate him in order to win the upper hand.
Bane is actually more of an anti hero than a villain in the comics. He only broke Batman's back to get rid of the psychological trauma brought onto him in the prison he grew up in. Fear rules. He figured if he took down the one big player whom all the criminals feared, all the criminals would fear him and that's what he wanted. After Bruce Wayne's back healed they became pretty good pals. Even teamed up a few times. Pretty awesome.

The guy in the plane says says "if I pull that off will you die" and he replies "it would be extremely painful" the guy then says "you're a big guy" and Bane says "for you" at first I thought that he meant he was big to him by comparison but I think he meant "it would be extremely painful for you" meaning that if the guy in the plane took off his mask he would face the consequences.
Bane and the Joker are my favorite batman villains. I'm glad they made Bane more realistic and serious in the dark knight rises
The thing that makes Bane more dangerous than the average Batman villain is that he has the sanity and intelligence to match his power. He always has a plan which he follows through.

I love these! I think WatchMojo is doing an amazing job summarizing comic book characters. I wish they would do more, and make it at least a minute longer. I would've loved to have seen footage of Bane in The Dark Knight Rises just to round out this great video. GREAT WORK!

I liked Nolan's Bane, but we have real life chemicals that make people stronger with bad side effects. So venom isn't that unrealistic.

What are you talking about? Tom Hardy is fine actor, and I agree he played the part well enough. But they absolutely have the technology to put venom tubes into him realistically. They could have even turned him into a huge beast of a man with CGI. The second Hulk movie proved that, and that movie is a few years old. The mask they picked for Bane to wear I think was stupid, but I'd be okay with it if I could have understood half of what he was saying. I mean, come on, Darth Vader didn't have that problem and that is from 1975. Also, why did he sound like Sean Connery? The Dark Knight Rises was a total miss for me. Bruce Wayne became a recluse and didn't return to running Wayne Enterprises after Batman was no longer needed? What?!?! That was way out of character. Alfred's dream for Bruce was also out of character. Bane holding the city hostage for months while Bruce heals and goes through physical therapy, doesn't make any sense. The movie just didn't live up to the first two.

But you must ask yourself, in the narrative that is "The Dark Knight Rises", would the inclusion of Venom do anything to advance the plot? Its inclusion would have done much more harm than good. That's why movie adaptions of comics must find their own footing. What works in comics doesn't always work on the big screen. Just look at "Batman and Robin".

You guys forgot to mention that in the time of Batman Beyond, Bane is now an old man due to using Venom for so many years. He entrusted the formula to his caretaker and he used it to cash in by selling it in small doses as a steroid.

If you're a DC fan I highly highly recommend reading Secret Six. It takes a bunch of C and D list villains (well A- list in Bane's case) and turns them all awesome and completely badass. For a bunch of psychopaths they are really likable too.
It even made Catman awesome.

The story that defined Bane is Knightfall, and Nolan did a much better job taking the important bits from that than the TAS or the Arkham Games did.
(SPOILER ALLERT!) Actually i read most recently nightfall volume one and the reason that chased batman was not that he had nightmares of a dark creature.Bane saw batman as a chalenge because his companion bird told him inside the prison that gotham ruled by him,and bane obsesed with the fact that could be the ruller of gotham start chasing him.Actually i hated bane a litle due to the fact he didn't have a direct aproach in bats and first make him tyred in order to fight with him.And for that reason i think he was somewhat a coward,and from the other he think this pretty smart to trap the bat.And i have mixed feelings for him hate him and at the same time like the way he thinks.
I think it was more like strategy than cowardice, I mean would you want to take on the bat while he's at full strength?

He gave the movie a more dark and somewhat realistic view. He never said he was going to take the comics and just make them movies. He just took the characters and changed a few things to tell the story he wanted to. He changed some things but they were not anything terrible or bad.

The Dark Knight Rises was basically Knightfall....Except it fuckin sucked balls. They should have stuck to that story line but instead it was just awful. Besides the first thirty minutes the movie was crap. Its a shame to cause Base could have been a great character.
I agree, I would totally choose old luchadore bane over the Dark knight version. Actually luchadore Bane wasn't always a muscle head, he was pretty smart at times.

i really did not like bane's voice in the dark knight rises, kinda ruined the movie for me...
I did. It gave the character some comic book feeling, plus show him as someone educated and not just a barbarian... I enjoyed the difference between his brutal fighting skills against his calmed voice with an accent... Kind of like Agent Smith in the Matrix.

the new one does suck, i like the older one better myself, tho the costume was shit and the backstory was shit too at least he didnt have a a mask that hurt him, the new one just needed to have the venum and 2 actors to play the weak bane and then another for venomed bane, kinda like how the hulk was done.....
Whereas in the nolan version, the costume didn't suck, and neither did the backstory or storyline, and if it's bane's mask you are referring to that hurts him that's obviously because they created A REALISTIC AND BELIEVABLE BACK STORY, unlike venom - a drug that would never exist.. and there's no need to have 2 actors play a weak bane when tom hardy did it so well. So yeah your point is invalid really, great stuff.
actually, venum is very much possible its called steroids (tho venom is steroids on steroids on super steroids), the back story in the new movie was the original and i m glad they used it (they didnt "creat it" for the movie it was already set up, all they did was add a few minor changes to it), a screwed up lower jaw tho was stupid, venom is who bane is,. the reason i said a weak and strong version is cause when he injects the venom he is supposed to hulk out and be a large mindless brute, thats what made the character who he was.
and the older versions back story did suck when compared to the original backstory (anytime they change the origins they screw it up, no matter what movie, spiderman, xmen, w/e), the costume back then was more to the original, the thing that sucked was no cgi, they used a rubber skin to make the character look bigger, which wouldnt have been bad had they actually done it right , instead they mad it look like shit

DOTA 2 didn't even exist in the 90's, when Bane was written.
I think it made more sense to tie in Bane with Talia and the League of Shadows in the Dark Knight Rises. It wouldn't have felt quite as gratifying to introduce him as a villain of happenstance for the final movie in the trilogy, it made sense to make him have something to do with Batman prior to the beginning of the story.
I say that Bane shouldn't have made an appearance in a Batman movie from the 90s since he was still a new character around the time. The same could even be said when he appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, coarse that episode could have been made a lot better than being a rushed episode. So I say that there could be a modified adaptation of Knightfall as a two-part, DC animated movie in the near future.
bane is also a genius level intellect. amd is probably one of the few villians who can probably beat batman not only in an arm wrestling competition, but any aptitude test. He's also very stealthy as hes portrait as an assassin in his earlier years. Definitely one of the most dangerous Batman Villains.
He is to Batman as to Doomsday to Superman and Venom to Spiderman.
Basically a Superior version of the hero.
