1996- this album kept my military days happier. 2000-sitting in a van in Australia, listening to Smashing Pumpkins before a surfing session.
2020- watching this video in bed while the kids are running around and refusing to shower.

There are some bootlegs out there of them performing songs acoustically. There was a great one from around ‘96/‘97 or so on KROQ (I think) where they played through a bunch of songs, including ones you normally don’t hear acoustic.
edit: it was actually on an Australian radio show circa ‘95 or ‘96. Great quality & i have it on cassette somewhere amongst my collection of bootlegs from back in the day.

      @halredlus4614 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

amen. it stinks that for so long he almost seem to resent his past, and loath the fans that loved his older music. You want to think that your music 'heroes' remain in that moment in time when they were knitting the fabric of your life when you first heard that song, and for a lot of us the music that 'played in the background' now 20-30 years later is a time machine pulling us back, or keeping us young, and i'm glad that he's able to come to terms with his legacy. Who knows what evils he has woven into these songs, but I'm loving listening to him play them agian with his old mates.

And then 2000 came and brought along....nothing, and few artists were like, we wanna play the instruments, and the record producers were like, no no, we're not listening to that soulful crap anymore, so we're just gonna put a synth loop over here so you don't need a band, and let's alter your vocals so you don't need to know how to sing too....
And all the boys and girls were mesmerized...

Loved them instantly and I’ve been a fan ever since, been to six of their concerts, and own all their albums and even some memorabilia too. It's a cliché at this point, but Billy really did capture the voice of a generation. I would even say the Smashing Pumpkins captivated both Gen Xers and early Millennials, I think in large part because their music didn't feel as nihilistic as other popular bands of the time.
It's like Billy says to Howard, their songs evoke both optimism and melancholy, and I think that struck a deep chord within us fans.
One of my absolute favorite bands of all time.

I had the privilege of seeing SP (Billy and James, really) in Austin a couple of years ago. They played pretty much the entire Pumpkins library that night, and the stage elements were almost constantly moving or showing beautiful footage both old and new/original. They put on a hell of a show.

Since no one has put up the lyrics...this masterpiece deserves to be sang along:
" Time is never time at all
You can never ever leave without leaving a piece of youth
And our lives are forever changed
We will never be the same
The more you change the less you feel
    Believe, believe in me, believe
That life can change, that you're not stuck in vain
We're not the same, we're different tonight
    Tonight, so bright
    Tonight
And you know you're never sure
But you're sure you could be right
If you held yourself up to the light
And the embers never fade in your city by the lake
The place where you were born
    Believe, believe in me, believe
In the resolute urgency of now
And if you believe there's not a chance tonight
    Tonight, so bright tonight
    We'll crucify the insincere tonight
We'll make things right, we'll feel it all tonight
We'll find a way to offer up the night tonight
The indescribable moments of your life tonight
    The impossible is possible tonight
Believe in me as I believe in you, tonight "

I was just a child when I was introduced to Billy's music through my older brother's car radio. I had no idea what I was listening to, but it tattooed itself in my subconscious. When I rediscovered The Smashing Pumpkins as a teen, they became my audio drug. I felt the rage, confusion, rebellion, and poetic beauty of every word, as well as every note of every instrument. Now, as an adult, I listen to them to remind myself that I'm still young at heart. The Smashing Pumpkins is the soundtrack to my life. Always has been, and always will be.

I have struggled with nihilistic depression my entire life since I was a small child and I just saw the world as such a sad place, but as I grew and navigate life’s complexities
    I realized
That the wold is even more fucked then I thought, but I also learned sad doesn’t mean something cant be beautiful
In fact, sadness is the very thing that gives us perspective so we can appreciate moments of love and joy.
This song has always encapsulated that feeling, sad, but hopeful
And to here Billy say those exact words when writing it
Just shows that art in itself is a language and a vehicle.
Just the orchestration of an instrument and carefully calculated rhythms and vibrations can perfectly encapsulate the very feeling that took my brain 30 years to figure out.
    Truly remarkable.

Hearing him now, I wish I'd given them more time when I was younger. Was more into Talking Heads, early Genesis, early Dire Straits, Bob Marley, JJ Cale, Pink Floyd, Early U2, The Clash, Creedence, Iron Maiden....and then the grunge era as it evolved. He is a terrific musician and these are great songs....he sure sounds better than anything I hear today...
