I sat next to Dave on a flight from Seattle to LA once. It was my first time flying alone, I was probably 12 or 13, and I was very nervous. At this point I had no clue who the Foo Fighters or Nirvana were, so I literally had no clue who he was. He could tell I was super uneasy, so he talked to me and was super reassuring, asking me my name and introducing himself, just generally being a really friendly guy. He talked about how he played music, but never mentioned the bands, and never really played up how famous he was. He helped me get my carryon out of the luggage compartment and told me to have a fun time as I was going to disneyland with my uncle who lived in irvine, and that was it. I saw a couple people ask him for a picture when we got off the plane, but I never realized who he was until a year or so later when I mentioned a "Dave" who played music and took some pictures with people to some friends who asked me if it was him, and it just blew my mind. Really, really genuine guy, and an experience I'll never forget.
Not that it's important for the song, but James Hetfield (rhythm guitarist from Metallica) actually said the same. In a commercial for Yousician, he said: "I basically play drums on guitar."

I gotta admit guys, I never thought my comment would get this kind of response. I’m just happy to know everybody is such a fan. Here’s to many more years of Foo!

It goes really fast too. You improve so fast as long as you put in the practice. It’s probably way more fun that way actually.
It's inspiring really. I've been playing guitar for a little over a year now, and I think that I should learn all the notes ans scales so that I can play good, but then I step back for a bit, find a random chord that I have no idea what it is called and roll with it, and it sounds great.
It’s funny how we can take a song and it can mean something so different in our lives. The first time I heard this was on the hour long drive to Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, after 3.5 years our daughter was having her final chemo. “Could anything ever be this good again” … hubby and I smiled while our daughter and our son (10 months younger than our girl) sang the Do do do's in the backseat. It was our victory song! That same little girl is a beautiful and brilliant 31 year old who's getting married in October (to a drummer 🤷🏼♀️😂), we'll have a family dance to “our song… Everlong 😊 thanks Dave ❤️!
Music is such an incredibly powerful human creation. It unites us. It transports us. It elevates us. Your story is a special one that embodies all of that. Thank you.
As someone currently self training (Still terrible I may add) I appreciate this. Its exactly my thought process when just playing each chord to this song. Plays 1 chord "sounds good" the next "sounds good" and the rest "sounds good." Okay, now with the strumming pattern...."sounds nothing like everlong" RIP
I walked down the aisle to this song on Halloween 2020. My husband knew this was my favorite song, so he learned to play it on the guitar in one night and surprised me with a "concert" when I got home from work one night. Tomorrow, I have to make his funeral arrangements.I've been putting off listening to this particular song since he was put on hospice two weeks ago. It was painful but cathartic. I'm glad I decided to watch this particular video instead of the original video❤ Fuck cancer
I'm sorry for your loss. What a great guy to learn and play that for you! I hope listening to Everlong again (and you must), brings out the sweet memories of him after the tears fade.
Music has a way of helping us transcend the crap hand life gives us sometimes. The Foo Fighters (and Everlong) in particular is an incredible song and your husband loved you so much that he learned to play it for you. What an amazing gift. I too suffered a horrible loss to the love of my life - my high school sweetheart - my husband - the father of our 2 beautiful daughters - my best friend…to an illness. Time will pass and you might find that it hurts a little less, but this song will anchor you to him forever and your feelings will eventually become more melancholy than sad. It’s been nearly 6 years since our loss and I can finally listen to Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley’s version) without breaking down into a puddle of tears and find that feeling that bonded us to that song with a smile in my heart. I’m so sorry for your loss. And you’re right…Fv
@Your Dad Just deal with it, there are people that really think Dave Grohl is a great drummer. And you comparing to lists in general as a point isnt a statement to be taken seriously. Of course - you can have your own opinion.
Went to a mental institution for like a month when I was 15. I’d spend all my time in the main room hovering over the little radio they had. I wouldn’t let anyone change the station 103.9. I’d wait each day for em to play this beautiful song and I’d feel way better than all the meds they ever gave me ever did. This was right when it came out. And the acoustic version is the best!
Take note kids. This musical genius can play the drums from cords he created on a guitar without being able to comprehend writing music....THEN he matched lyrics on command......this is what REAL talent looks like.
I always love hearing a story behind the song. A bit hard to say, but that breakup might have been the best breakup ever when it resulted in a song like this.
Like clockwork. I mentioned in another comment that I can't think of a single bad time in my life that I was listening to this song. It's always been a highlight of the highlights, if you will.
Yeah. The 90's and early 2000's was a good time to be alive. I know for me it just reminds me of being a teenager with all this inner turnmoil for the first time. Just having like a first real awakening to life in general and not knowing how to handle it, but being able to take comfort and solace on songs like these, if only for a moment.
A story of everlong, a story of a man who persevered through a pain beyond all pain. To keep going after most would think its all lost. He could have quit after Kurt died, but he powered through and drove forward into an amazing force that is the Foo Fighters. Props to you Dave, love ya man
@@antonioval3035 Why did Lennon McCartney write the Golden Slumbers Medley? When a drummer is just gonna knock em out in 30 years with a couple chords he can't even name cause he thinks the high strings are cymbals and the low strings are drums... @Hayden music is completely subjective. To this person, it’s one of the best songs ever written. There’s no way to prove that it’s not. No need to argue over it
Those are the best songs I've realized, because you get the whole entirety of life in one. Both the good and the bad. Sad that it's over but also happy for what was, and for the future to come.

He is trained, just not in the traditional sense of going to a school and being taught music theory. At the end of the day though, every great musician and composer uses the same things: their ears and their heart
Gotta respect his honesty. That really means that his songs have somethig special. I've been trying for so long to learn reading music, believing that i would be somehow better. Now, this video, almost gives me an excuse to skip learning intervals, modes, arpeggios. Even though I enjoy watching Adam Neely and Rick Beato explaining what appears to be rocket science :) anyone agrees?
The acoustic version gave us chills hearing it on the stern show way back then we included it in my daughter's funeral, because at this tone it really felt like a sad but beautiful description of our brief trip here together in the physical ❤we were planning to take her to see Dave that same year but she didn't stay long enough. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful song with the world
The fact that he has written whole ALBUMS of legendary songs, can play just about all the instruments, and he’s all self taught. The man is more than just an icon, a legend. He’s absolutely brilliant.
"I'm not a trained musician".....goes and do the first album by himself!!! Maybe he doesn't know the chord...but he knows everything else. One of the greatest artist ever.
My dad does not undestand a single word of english. I just played this song for him on my acoustic guitar. He loved it. He barely show his emotions. This means the world to me. Im glad this song exist. Thank you so much Dave.
Wow that is beautiful and amazing. Great song choice. Sometimes you don’t have to understand the language to feel the emotion that follows the music. His father was proud to hear his talented son. And son was proud to share something he loves with his father. Sounds like a bonding moment to me ♥️ so congrats my friend. Keep doing what you love.
It’s unbelievable, he’s a fantastic guitarist, one of the best drummers to ever touch this Earth no matter what anyone says, and his singing is like an angel’s. He’s my hero.
My friend loved this song, he passed away 1 year ago today and this song has reminded me of him since, and this happened to pop up on my reccomended today. Tell loved ones you love em before it's too late
A man that exploded with a band at a young age, watched the lead guy die and still made an impact on the world after rather then burn out or die. Makes you think where the dead rockstars would be if they were alive.
Makes you wonder where the people inspired by these people's talent and personality would be too. Do you think that this masterpiece would have been written if Kurt hadn't died?
I used to sweat my butt off on drums in the garage with my best friend. Then he wanted to play drums, and we swapped instruments. I literally knew how to play it on both instruments at 20yrs old, because I love this song so much. One of my first experiences with drop D.
Yes, I love quite a few of Foo Fighters songs but when I knew this was one of the bands I needed to see live at least once was when I heard this song. Somehow it always reminds me of a past relationships. After hearing how he came up with the song... It makes perfect sense.
The chances of anyone from Foo Fighters actually seeing this comments are slim to none but I wanted to write it anyway. My mom passed away about five years ago at this point and Foo Fighters were her favorite band in the world and this was her favorite song in the world, hearing the story and hearing this rendition of the song brought me completely to tears and made me feel so incredibly close to her and maybe wish I could just share this video with her too, thank you
This is why I love Dave Grohl. For him its all about the music and not the bullshit. He's genuine. Unfortunately musicians like him are getting harder to come by. Love the Foo

As many times as I've listened to this song, mostly here on TH-cam, I've never seen this video. I love the story behind one of my all time favorite songs. Also the original HD video is the first one that featured Taylor Hawkins in the Foo Fighters even though through another video Dave Grohl explains that he actually recorded the drum track for it. I remember some months ago when Frusciante said that "Kiedis don´t know anything about music theory, but he write and sing with his heart and that´s even more important".
They knew theory, but didn’t know the proper terminology for it. That’s what these guys did, they didn’t know terminology, but they knew what they were doing
i started playing drums when i was seven or so, i don’t play any other instrument. when dave explained how he perceives the lower strings as drums and the higher strings as cymbals, i realized that i would think of it the same way. i’m simply used to drum grooves and if i knew a few chords on the guitar, i’d probably played them like drum grooves. i think that’s why i feel oddly special especially about this song. damn, this man and his music is so inspiring

i discovered the foo fighters when I was in sixth grade. My brother listened to their greatest hits album on repeat when he drove me to school and we jammed out to that music. I grew up with them, I distinctly remember listening to Sonic Highways before my eighth grade football games, and Concrete and Gold before my HS football games. I take them with me everywhere. I'm almost done with college now, stressed out of my mind and overwhelmed on all four corners. This music takes me back to simpler times.
You're absolutely right, Basically that is what Art in genereal is all about. It's the process. It's painful and it's beautiful. Sometimes incredibly hard, other times feels like you can walk on water. Worst part is. When you come to the end of the journey. You only get to enjoy it one time. Then you grow tired of it and start from the beginning on a new project. Good times. But I imagine that especially with songs. You get to enjoy them multiple times because every performance is going to be a journey in itself. sry for talking so much.
Music just doesn't have the same feel anymore. I remember just sitting in my room listening to music. The younger generation has so many distractions now. Internet, video games and cell phones. If only people could just listen, really listen there would be more appreciation for music.

It really is! It’s very raw, honest, vulnerable emotion. I’ve loved this song since I first heard it decades ago & when I heard the acoustic version maybe 10 years ago, I immediately thought I’d love for it to be my first dance song at my wedding. We’ll see…
@YamiOni I have twisted the meaning of this song for myself to resonate as one of living in the moment and not letting go of true love. So I personally get happy vibes from it. It is also my #1 favorite song ever.
One of my top 3 favorite songs of all times. Hearing it acoustically with his explanation of the meaning of this song just made it that much more beautiful and special to me love❤
And ironically (or not), it brings him closer to one of his musical idols, The Beatles. It's certainly good company to be able to belong to: other legends who had no mind for the mathematics of how they sounded. Grohl is the man, and long love the Beatles.

I’m in love with Dave’s explanation of the history of this song, but as soon as Dave starts playing all I can hear is the deafening absence of Taylor drums, his raw energy, his fills, his emotion, the very heartbeat of this song. I am playing Everlong on the piano right now. I can read music and just started playing again after 20yrs of not having a piano. I was having so much trouble with the rhythm bc I have to play it so fast, and the way you described playing it on the drums and how you see it has tremendously helped me.
@@dannahinojosa1934 every generation says this. Welcome to being old.
Making and listening to music is such a magical universal experience. It’s a love language in my experience across dimensions. Makes me feel connected to myself, nature, others and possibilities around the corner (for me and many) = transcendental💖🌸💝🦄
@@race38dirt nah it's not because you're old, it's true. I'm 16 and I think that music today is just mostly bad. The most famous rappers and pop stars can make a song in an hour and it could be a hit. Music isn't made the way it used to be and it honestly sucks.
This song communicated something to my soul that I can't seem to describe from a young age. My dad committed suicide when I was fourteen and I started exploring myself and music was a big part of that. THIS SONG was the one that seemed to resonate the most with me. A lot of other music has come and gone in my life but not this.
I’m sorry ❤️
Woah. That's rough in you and your family. I'm glad music helped, even if only in a small way. ♥️
Same thing. Exactly the same age and exactly the same situation.

Hello
I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red
Out of her head, she sang
Come down and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head
Out of her head, she sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
Breathe out
So I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now
I know you've always been
Out of your head
Out of my head, I sang
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
And I wonder
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when

This is the first song I sang to my children after they were born. I came upon this video today, my eldest’s 17th birthday, and there’s no shame when I say I cried hearing it.
You’re a good dad. And they’re lucky to have you. Sending love to you and your family.

This song is pure raw emotion. Dave's explanation on how the song came to be, is just icing on the cake.
Sorry I just had to State the obvious cuz this man's music makes this 50-year-old cry like a 4-year-old when I hear his music.
It really is! It’s very raw, honest, vulnerable emotion. I’ve loved this song since I first heard it decades ago & when I heard the acoustic version maybe 10 years ago, I immediately thought I’d love for it to be my first dance song at my wedding. We’ll see…
Music touches the soul. If a song like this doesn't make you cry, I might wonder what was wrong with you!
Hey man, as a 49 year old man, I just want to give you permission to cry... its not reserved for 4 year olds. (c:
@YamiOni I have twisted the meaning of this song for myself to resonate as one of living in the moment and not letting go of true love. So I personally get happy vibes from it. It is also my #1 favorite song ever.
Just to think he was just a drummer with Nirvana except when he song a few songs I think He's a legend to play with Kirk Mind blowing
One of my top 3 favorite songs of all times. Hearing it acoustically with his explanation of the meaning of this song just made it that much more beautiful and special to me love❤
The fact that he’s not a “trained musician” & “can’t read music” makes him more of an accomplished musician not less.
Ever long is just so elegantly crafted
We value earnestness and passion over technical prowess. This man felt the music and we felt it too.
And ironically (or not), it brings him closer to one of his musical idols, The Beatles.
It's certainly good company to be able to belong to: other legends who had no mind for the mathematics of how they sounded.
Grohl is the man, and long love the Beatles.
@@donsmith3590 well put
Or a person could actually take the time to learn fundamentals and also have passion. I mean, that person isn't gonna be me I'm way more like Dave but I'm just sayin its not an accomplishment to not learn something.
I met my wife in college in the '70's and we spent the next 13 years with me breaking up with her and then getting back together a number of times , I was even engaged to another woman for a time before I realized who I was running from. We celebrate our 30th anniversary this year! I am so grateful (and damned lucky) she didn't stop when I said when!!!
This guy impresses the heck out of me. This is such a beautiful song.
anyone else notice how worked up he gets? You can tell he's super grateful for all the things he's achieved in music and that is just beautiful to see
I wonder how is ex feels hearing this on the radio 13 times a day

Acoustics can rock too, Dave!
EDIT: Thank you, guys! Dave is a HUGE inspiration to me! From Nirvana to all the Foo material, his music has affected my playing, all my life. But, I get the feeling that Dave likes to tone down his own songs for acoustic, and that's what he means. Which, is not good or bad, it's just his preference. :D

Hey Fernando I was watching one of your vids the other night 👍👍👍
I've always admired his talent and love his lyrics but this explanation just proves that he's a musical/artistic genius. I now have an even higher appreciation for what he does.

In ten years people will still watch this backstory to this historic song.
I think "the only thing I'll ever ask of you, you gotta promise not to stop when I say when" is one of the most beautiful lines ever
This hits so different after the passing of Taylor. I’m in love with Dave’s explanation of the history of this song, but as soon as Dave starts playing all I can hear is the deafening absence of Taylor drums, his raw energy, his fills, his emotion, the very heartbeat of this song. Thank you Taylor for everything that you gave. I’ve grown into my years listening to this band and I’m so thankful that I’ve lived in an age blessed with your talent. Rest now.
me too, after all the words there's only void..
You’re so right. Gah, RIP Taylor :(
what does himicahi mean?
Yeah, I hear the lyrics talking to Taylor and about the band. "If anything could ever be this real forever. If anything could ever be this good again." And then she sang and there are no words. As if only Dave can hear his voice... I'm so sad he died and I don't usually feel that way about people I don't know IRL.
@@Raesling1 I feel the very same❤️
I am playing Everlong on the piano right now. I can read music and just started playing again after 20yrs of not having a piano. I was having so much trouble with the rhythm bc I have to play it so fast, and the way you described playing it on the drums and how you see it has tremendously helped me. I’ve never had a speech about music resonate so much in my soul. I cannot play a song unless I feel it in my bones. I have to be in the emotional mindset and play a song I love or you can’t hear it in my music or I’m bored with it. Music coming from raw emotion is the BEST MUSIC, and this is why Everlong is one of my favorite songs.
This is mine and my husband's song together. It was playing in his room a while after we started dating, and as it played we had told each other for the first time that we loved each other. I got the word "everlong" tattooed on me a few months ago 🙂
