I'm subbed to both channels Rick. A YT friend of mine (that I know in real life who's in the business) and myself done a music based stream and he beams about you and your contributions to the craft. Big thumbs up.
It’s really annoying to interview someone and keep interrupting them. Especially when it sounds like they’re going to say something important or insightful. What a mess.
@BamaRockstar85 I'm very aware of that. I'm a guitarist (and also a drummer, bassist and singer), so I've read multiple interviews with him and his brother in Guitar World since the band first hit the scene.
@@dmitryowens Oh? I was under the impression they were a three piece - drums, bass, and lead guitar with Scott singing but not playing an instrument. Who’s the rhythm guitar player?
Interesting to hear him say Brendan wanted the record to sound live. I always thought it sounded heavily produced, but I’m not much of a musician so what do I know!
Robert is so talented it's borderline unfair. I absolutely love the fact that Rick can pinpoint Robert's influences at the drop of a hat. I was NOT expecting to learn that there was a straight line between Antonio Carlos Jobim and Interstate Love Song.
Interstate Love Song makes STP a top 20 all time rock band. I was so lucky to see them in concert. Such a great show. Scott was so charismatic. I treasure that as one of my memories.
Interstate Love Song is my favorite song of the grunge era, which is saying something as there were very many brilliant songs. I liked the whole album and listen to it to this day.
I love Robert and Deans chord and genre knowledge! To write Bossanova, Jazz, or even ragtime chords and make them grunge was unlike anything we ever had in the 90s.
Stone Temple Pilots' 'Interstate Love Song' That guitar riff and bass melody, borrowed from the instrumental refrain in singer/songwriter Jim Croce's 1973 hit “I Got a Name
@@shmucklerYou are absolutely correct. And Croce was given zero credit for the rip or copy of that riff. I mean come on ‘Movin me Down the “Highway,” & “Interstate” Love Song.’ Clearly evident.
One of them for sure. I play it pretty regularly and it still hits. Definitely has some legs on it. Same thing with Big Empty, Plush, Still Remains, etc. I prefer Purple to Core, must be the youthful memories.
Definitely one of the awesome 90s songs of my youth, used to knock the wind out of me when I heard it on the radio as an 8 or 10 year old. Still does. RIP Scott 🙏
THIS is what fans need to see and hear from these incredibly talented musicians! Robert's honest, soft-spoken personality just makes me love the music more. I've always loved this band but these insights into the songs and the man behind so much of them is fascinating!
Interstate love song is my favorite song off all time… The lyrics, make sense when he talks about “southern train” it makes sense they recorded it at “southern tracks”. Not sure if it’s similar but I’d like to think it relates.

What a talented musician and composer. Seems like a mellow, thoughtful down to earth dude. Always was a fan of him and STP, even moreso after viewing this entire interview. RIP Scott
That's what I love about STP, their music is so well structured, you immediately unconciously know they are extremely talented and educated musicians. It is not just make music sound rock, is rock with a lot of knowledge behind it.
The Jamerson of the grunge era. Just a sublime taste for melody, chord voicings, playing in the pocket, tone, musicianship, etc. Robert belongs in the conversation of all time great rock bassists.
Love this band. They are so underrated in terms of their songwriting. It totally makes sense given the chord voicings that this started out with a Latin feel. I actually have a TH-cam cover of this on my channel from a good few years ago. It’s incredible the strange beginnings of some of these songs. The fact that Plush is almost influenced from ragtime is absolutely bonkers. Alongside Soundgarden I have to say that STP were one of the most diverse bands of that era of the early 90s.
I saw STP perform this weekend and was blown away at how much they are still rocking. I was able to do a pre-show meet and greet with the band and they were the nicest, most genuinely down to earth guys. Robert was just like he is in this interview. Dean even tossed me his slide after using it on a big Empty!!!!
Rick, you are a luxury for music lovers. Your interviews, the way you make your guests "work" and the knowledge you share is a treasure for those of us who are interested in the creative process and the musical architecture of the great songs of popular music. I can't find better words to thank you for your work and, of course, the good vibes and cooperation of the artists you know how to get the best out of. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
That was incredibly fascinating! As a bass player I was well aware of how talented and interesting Rob was, but his guitar playing caught me by surprise.
my favorite bass line to play, by far. Legit perfection. Love smokin some weed, closing my eyes , going to narnia, and running through that jam. PERFECTION.
My all time favorite song. I have it in my will that it will be played at my funeral. At some of the most trying times in my life, I would hear this song and know everything would be ok.
Robert DeLeo is a highly under-rated musician. Scott Weiland was very talented and his vocals were amazing and his death was very tragic but Robert was always the genius who made STP's music sound so great.
The riff at the 2:19 mark in the interview has great similarity to Jim Croce's " I got a Name" listen to Interstate and IGaN back to back and it will surprise you.
I love STP, and Robert is amazing...but I'm glad someone else mentioned this, because I've noticed that too...the hook riff is basically a note for note copy of Croces I Got a Name cadence
Totally agree. I put that album right up there with one of the best from the first song to kitchen wear and candy bars. It is a great listening experience. Of course my favorite song is Silvergun Superman.

Listen to Jim Croce's I Got A Name. The walkdown throughout and on the end is almost identical. Pretty cool.
Great video. StP one of my faves. I miss Scott and the band plays on my 200 watt acoustic speakers forever💪😎💪
Loved this band since they started - I had no idea how thoughtful and soft-spoken Robert DeLeo was outside of his rock star persona.
Unsure, hasn't Rick invited Robert on B/4?

Jeff Carlisi from 38 Special is as well. Great underrated guitar player, articulate, soft spoken. Love these insights.
Well, Robert was never known for being a rock 'n' roll wildman 😎
Then you clearly haven't loved this band since they started. Robert hasn't changed since the beginning of STP
Robert DeLeo needs to be a regular guest. I can watch these two talk music endlessly.
Agreed
Yeah, this was really good.
As time passes, glad to see STP finally getting their flowers.
I didn’t realize that Robert wrote these lead guitar parts. He’s such an outstanding musician. I just love the STP’s music!

Interstate is the summer song of our youth in the 90's.
It undoubtedly is and always will be. It will always belong to us.
Song of 1994!
Purple was the first CD I ever bought with my own money (I was 13) and to this day, remains a favorite
When I hear this song it just makes me feel happy. It reminds me of summer for sure. I wish I would have appreciated it more at the time.
I love Robert's songwriting. The perfect balance of melody, simplicity and complexity.

That man is bad as fuck on the bass and has inspired my bass playing for about 16 years now. And he's such a skilled songwriter too! Much respect.
Right
"Interstate Love Song", has that Jim Croci "I Got a Name" feel to it.
