    Why does buying a quality window matter? We just replaced some windows for a customer that had already been replaced only nine years ago (by someone else, of course) and today we take a look at one of the windows we pulled out so you can see the difference between a quality replacement window and one that is...well...a piece of junk. houstonwindowexperts.com

    We had the Anderson Renewal team come to our house last night. They had some good looking windows. They wouldn't give me a discount for paying cash. They wouldn't tell me about the glass much except I can pay for whatever I want. I told him I don't want Vinyl and they told me how bad vinyl is anyway.$42,000 for 10 windows. And they only have Double hung. We were not ready anyway and did learn a couple of things.

    I'm learning a lot from your videos! How great to learn of your Christian and missionary backgrounds. In the decade of the 1980's my primary ministry was as a construction missionary taking on building projects in the US, Haiti and Panama'. Last year I retired from "professional" ministry after 30 years of pastoring.
    I have moved to AZ and with one of my best friends (and formerly a leader in one of the churches I've pastored) who is closing his window business in Portland, OR and we are re-establishing it here in the Phoenix area, Accurate Window and Door.
    My friend is the "expert" but I'm catching up through your videos! Thanks for serving the industry and customers alike with your videos!

    Because of your recommendation, I looked at Anlin Windows. I was impressed with the quality and price. I had had a quote from Anderson Renewal and they wanted $43,000. The Anlin windows which I thought had better quality and the same lifetime warranty ended up being $18100. I have no idea why anyone would buy Anderson. My windows should be in by July. I will update when the windows are in.

    We built our home in central Minnesota in 2000. We built it with wooden Marvin casement windows. They are nearly all rotten, sadly. Our Marvin fixed windows are holding up better. We have worked hard to maintain proper humidity but this did not help save our windows. We are looking at replacing all 12 operating ones and some of them are six feet square. Love your video's. I was told that the windows at Home Depot are best so I ordered from the new brand that is up to California regulations, before was another brand. I still have options of cancelling if I can find the best ,I would rather buy and spend the money on the finest then the cheapest as you stated in the video and pay twice. Would like to see more on UV degrading the vinyl. Is the titanium dioxide content the only significant factor? Surely someone has done accelerated testing with UV lamps across different products
    We have 160 year old brick house with 6' windows throughout. I am comfortable with vinyl basement windows set in masonry but I am hesitant about replacing historic windows, especially on south side even though they require maintenance. Amazing that 160 year old windows still work. Contractor says old growth wood was much better than Southern Yellow Pine used in Anderson windows.
    Light transmission not a huge issue with big windows. UV fade has always been an issue.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching and your comments. I'm sorry that I overlooked your comment and did not get back to you promptly. I agree with you about old wood windows. If they're maintained properly they will ask a very long time. UV blocking was not important or understood many years ago. All the glass that has low e coatings on it will reduce UV transfer significantly.

    I’m learning a lot from your videos, thank you! I’m about to lock into a deal through Home Depot in Minnesota. I’m seriously considering Simonton 6500 series triple pane windows. Is this a solid choice? For a little more I could go with Anderson but that would be double pane and the salesman says with Simonton I’m getting more and paying less.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think simonton is a fair choice product from a big box store. Or you would make any final decisions, you should also try to find a local family-owned window company for a comparison proposal. Since the most important component is the installation process, I think that should be at the top of your list for making a decision. Typically the installation Cruise for the big box stores are subpar and get paid by the window instead of the quality of their work. They tend to be in a hurry and use unskilled labor to get things done. Let me know how it goes!

    I'm looking at replacing original 1974 CBS 2/2 1100 sq. ft. home aluminum windows with impact windows.
    1. Do you have an opinion of PA company Viwinco? It's being pushed by a lumber yard that sells them. It would require an independent contractor to install. The lumber yard has recommended installers.
    2. Do you insist on replacing the window buck in older aluminum window openings with new buck at least as wide as the new window? Here in Florida, that typically is done by cutting back the interior sheetrock to make room for the new, wider buck. I ask because one company suggested not doing that, measuring the inside dimensions, and sliding the windows inside the interior sheetrock to avoid the additional work needed to cut back the sheetrock. This reduced the width of the sills and interior openings about 1 1/2 inches or so.
    3. The largest manufacturer in FL is PGT. They currently have a 35 week wait for their windows. Some installers are saying because they are so behind, their quality is suffering and have stopped using them.
    4. I appreciate your input. These decisions are complex.

    • @HoustonWindowExperts
      @HoustonWindowExperts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching.
      1. I'm not familiar with that brand so I cannot comment.
      2. Yes, I'd suggest the cutback.
      3. Quality could be suffering due to labor issues but I'd just be very careful about inspecting the windows before taking delivery.
      3B. I'm leary of the 3 party arrangements. There's too much possibility of finger pointing. I'd prefer a vendor who supplies AND installs. That way you have one source accountable for the project.

      I think their products are more along the lines of builder grade. At least in our area, it seems like the builders who are building the cheaper houses love that product because it looks good at a very affordable price. The problem I see is that it gets replaced 10 to 15 years later because it fails. it could be the installer or it could be the window, I can't say for sure.
      If you have a Pella dealer or a Windsor dealer near you, I would do some comparison shopping. I think those products are much better but they will cost a little more money.

      Pella was our first mistake. Marvin was our best decision. Have both and have had the pella glass replace 7 time in the last 14 months. Marvin zero issues. Just make sure your installer is very good. Installers can ruin the best window. It like having someone valet your high end car to return it with the engine burning and lots of body damage. You had a great car until the valet touched it.

      It's a well constructed window but it's too chunky in my opinion. I don't think you will regret your purchase.

    So in the east coast where it gets cold, getting cheaper window will be better in the winter

      Not necessarily. A cheaper window is also less effective at keeping out cold weather.
      It also will be more brittle and have a higher failure rate due to expansion and contraction.

      I will have to look and get back to you. If you do a search for glass spectrometer, you will find many options on the internet.

      They're an average, builder grade window, in my opinion.
