My old landlord replaced my kitchen with a double hung tilt window and one day the top pane dropped fell and broke into the kitchen while we were at work. I’m just happy my Rottweiler didn’t get hurt or get out
Wow- mandatory viewing for anybody in the market for windows! Thanks for the great info- we're building a house and were considering double-hung, however, we're going with single-hung for all of the aforementioned reasons. Double win- better window for our wants/needs, and less $
Thank you, thank you. I'm not crazy. My husband was insulted when I told him I didn't like his double hung windows. We have two whole porch walls full of them. I gave him all the reasons you illustrated, without my having ever seen or heard anything before, regarding windows. I just based my opinion on what I observed with those windows. I told him I didn't think they were as energy efficient as the old fashioned ones. He thought I was nuts, and just shook his head. I knew I wasn't, but now, thanks to you, I have proof that I'm not. He even showed me the so called, easy way, to wash them. I told him I prefer the old way of getting on a step ladder, to do the job outside in the sunshine. Great video. Thanks.

I have double hung windows but as far as cleaning I hate monkeying with the tilt mechanisms to clean. I got a squeegee and handle from Lowes (single story) and some concentrated window cleaner. Mix in a bottle and spray and I can clean them just as quick. So my next windows will be single hung. Plus I prefer a narrower frame look and the weather tight advantages for those cold winter winds.
I can't thank you enough for this very well explained video. I am building a new home and researching windows. I was leaning towards double hung for the ventilation in the summer and ease of cleaning but after this video I am going with single hung. For me it's all about energy efficiency. Going outside to clean a window in a single story home isn't a big deal and your right about blinds and curtains getting in the way. If I lived in Texas I would be buying windows from you. Bless you sir!!!!
Excellent, informative video! I always thought the single hung was just the cheap way out. I ordered 2 single hung cheap windows for an old storage shed that gets incredibly hot in the summertime and didn't even know I bought the best window until I watched an expert, you! Thank you!
Thank you very much. Exceedingly helpful. I live in an historic area that requies wood windows so Im glad i watched the entire video on why wood windows are double hung
May have missed it but didn't see in any of the comments that one disadvantage of the single hung is that you additionally have to remove the screens to clean the windows versus not having to do that with the tilt-in double hung.
Thank you for putting this video out there. It makes me feel even better about keeping my old single hung window and getting new storm windows. My storm windows were broken, and I had a lot of companies trying to sell me on double hung windows that I didn't necessarily need.
Congratulations! By the way, there is a double-hung, which is what I describe in this video, and then there is Double-Pane. Don't confuse the two. Double-Pane windows can be single-hung or double-hung.
Thank you for watching. By the way, I have a lot of great window company friends all over the country. We may know somebody near you. Please check out JeffsList.com
Ya know, I'd totally stop in and see you about some windows if I lived in Texas. You more than answered my "what's the difference" question with your frank, explanation.
I wish I saw your video earlier. We purchased a new build and the builder talked us into buying single hung tilt windows. Now it's winter and I can feel cold breeze from the sides. Thanks to your video, I now know why lol. I wish I selected single hung non-tilt windows after watching your video. The windows would've looked nicer and no cold breeze lol
Thank you so much for this video! I have been debating which one I should install. I've been thinking of a Double-hung Window because I live in a tropical, humid place and needed more opening for air to come in but now that I'm listening to you, Single Hung indeed is better and specially when it rains & storm. Thank you very much!
Great video. Came across your channel while researching vinyl window replacements. I live in the Atl area and am recently retired and plan on this to be a DIY project. As you stated, moving frames without panels is a game changer for me, and I am part of that 20% that does clean so therefor leaning toward double hung tilt. On a lighter side, had a good chuckle at time 14:55 when you said, “if a lawnmower hits your window. . ”. I know you get hurricanes in Houston, but I haven’t seen too many flying mowers in this part of Ga. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
There is always a trade off, even with windows! Double hung is cool for cleaning purposes only, but every other advantage including cost seems to go to single hung. If you have more than one window in your room, then you'll get airflow with single hung as well. Up until this video I was so set on double hung, but this was eye opening on pros and cons. Especially living in Chicago! Plus, how often am I going to be cleaning the outside of the windows? It's not like it's daily.
I would like to know if single hung windows come with double pane I'm considering single hung windows since I have a one story house in FL I can clean from outside
on the flip side if the savings in terms of efficiency is minimal then 40 extra dollars on the extreme side is not too bad for those who prefer those benefits of double hung. Like most things in life its about preference you may not clean windows but trust me there are those who do and still pay to get them cleaned. Difference and variety are the spices of life my friend and its what makes the world go round. Thanks
All good points. We do clean our own windows and find it easy to do but it is a two-person job. There is a workaround if you wanted to use something to prop up the bottom while you open the top but my wife and I just do it together.
That circulation option you mentioned is THE very reason double hung windows exist. During the hot months youd open the top at one end of the house, and open the bottom of another window at the other end of your house. This is a big reason restoring old 100 year old double hung windows are regaining so much popularity; that and the old growth wood theyre made of.

This was educational..thanks. my issue is in holding animal rescues in my home. Closing the door at all times makes the room unbelievably muggy. I bought a portable AC for the horizontal windows in the bedroom. I was shocked my maintenance guy said as long as the ac hose was in the window I couldn't open it! I felt claustrophic for my rescues. Now im trying to find double hung. They cost a fortune. 400.00 for a 36"x36" @ home depot with an astronomical 400.00 more to install. I can get my maintenance guy to install but the cost is mind boggling. I want to be able to open the top window at times when its cooler in the evening! Sad things cost so much.

I'm literally window shopping right now, and I think a vinyl single hung window because I have a single hung wood frame window. However, the top half has leaded glass, so it's a tough decision. Thank you.
Thank you for the honest and in-depth comparison of double hung vs. single hung windows. I'm also nowhere near Houston but would be very comfortable shopping with you and your firm if my home was nearby. I have original 1947 wood windows that I love because they have beautiful muntins that help reflect light into the house. I'm not sure if the top sashes are operable or have been painted shut.

Thanks for the explanation. It’s very unlikely I come to visit yo, because I live in the Netherlands. But this thing came up in a video about the differences in windows in the USA and the UK. The single hung window is familiar to me, from older houses. The always got stuck, but that were the wooden ones. Double hung windows were not known to me. In my house I’ve got tilt and turn windows.
Thank you for the informative video! unfortunately, I am nowhere near Houston or I would gladly come in to your showroom if nothing else just to thank you!

Had a salesman by today, who seemed confused by the idea of a non-tilting window. Didn’t think he had ever sold those and wasn’t sure if such a thing existed. The solution provided was Marvin windows and will be getting back to me with an estimate. I see the original video was 4 years ago but does this combo still exist?
I clean windows professionally and occasionally make use of the double tilt windows. The bottom sash, in my experience, you can just tilt the bottom sash all the way down till it rests on the bottom frame of the window, and then tilt in the top one. Have never had a problem doing that? Also, he demonstrates at the end that the sashes are removable, which is another option when cleaning alone. Everything else was great information, but the cleaning issue was over exaggerated.
Issac, you're a pro. I don't think it's super difficult but if you were like me and had over 100,000 windows installed in people's homes, you'd realize that getting a few calls a month about this and having to dispatch a service tech can get expensive. I don't have much preference for either option except I see the drawbacks to DH not worth the effort or expense unless someone really wants it. Thank you for watching and your comment.
@@HoustonWindowExperts I understand that you probably get lots of calls about this. But that doesn't mean that in this video you have to make it look like you have to be a gymnast to clean the windows, that doesn't seem like it would help the situation, haha.
I'm a 77 year old who lives alone. I don't have to hold the one sash when I clean the other. I can just let the bottom sash tilt all the way down while I clean the top sash.
@@isaacholzwarth It's obvious that the call back cost for putting the sash back in is why he doesn't like double hung windows. However if he sold a quality one with 3 weatherstrips on the sashes you would have far less air infiltration.
Glad I seen your video I had some one go to my house a did exactly as you said he gave me the numbers 11 windows at over 2000 a piece and now they are calling yo get the this night only deal
I've just started the process of looking for replacement windows for my 1922 bungalow, and your videos have been invaluable! Thank you so much for all of the information!
Thanks for the video. It sounds like single hung give the best efficiency which I always assumed but you now have me thinking a single hung with one sash tilt out is kind of pointless and a single hung non tilt ou may be the best way to go for max efficiency.
I always washed double hang window by myself, just rest the window on the chair, it is easy and I laughed when you explained about the difficulty some people had,....wow some people have serious problems lol
Thanks for the very clear explanation of the pros and cons of single and double hung windows. I didn’t realize all the disadvantages of double hung. I was going to purchase double hungs for my second floor windows but probably won’t now. I’m just about ready to purchase. Will you be opening a branch showroom in the Seattle area in the next couple weeks? (🤪)
Lol... Not soon enough! I started a website to help people locate a great window company near them. We may have someone in your area. Please visit TheWindowExperts.com
Thank you. Through explanation. It would be great to get tips on how to determine a good window company. If you're the best, what points do we compare? So far, I've learned to get a lawyer to review the terms of the contract. The contracts, even on 5 star companies, have left the homeowner wide open for problems. How can the homeowner determine whether the window has been installed properly? We are not the expert. My windows worked on inspection. When they failed later is was because of an original installation problem. Yet when I consider getting replacement windows, the contract requires the homeowner to signoff on a proper instaulations. My lawyer said she would never agree to a contract like that.
Very nice video... Use a barstool to hold up the windows so you can clean them! I do that with mine.. Mine are single hung and tilt.. And with your video I am glad that I didn't upgrade (if you will) to double hung! But I do have to get up on a ladder to clean the upper window. I also use Nufinish polish and it helps keep them clean longer..
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for mentioning the wind... I live in Florida so I wont buy double hung until they make a change! Very informative videos!
Excelente explicación hermano estaba apunto de comprar ventanas baratas y me puse a buscar Videos así es que te encontré y me encanta tu explicación ojalá que estuvieras acá en Carolina del Norte
at 7:00 minutes into the video you are pointing out how hard it is to clean a double-hung tip in window and I agree it is hard, but I have single-hung windows and it is not possible, at all, to clean the top sash. So I must hire a company that has very long ladders to get high enough to clean the top sash.

Thank you for watching and your comment.
I'm literally window shopping right now, and I think a vinyl single hung window because I have a single hung wood frame window. However, the top half has leaded glass, so it's a tough decision. Thank you.
Your honest opinion is priceless. I would definitely remember to get new window replacement from you. Thank you!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback.

Great video that popped up after some other video. Very helpful explanation with a practical demonstration. Great job and thank you!
Great! Thank you for watching.
What a great informative video. I wish we lived in Houston. We would be buying from you.

Thank you for watching. I'm glad that I could be of help.
I think tilt and turn windows are used in Germany as well. I fell in love with their windows when I visited!
Yes, they are.

Wow. Really good info right here buddy. I will be buying windows from you. I am buying a house and it needs new windows. Now I know the place to go.
Thanks for considering us for your project! We look forward to speaking with you!
Thank you, Jeff...I wish you were based in NJ
WoW, that was incredible helpful.
Glad I seen your video I had some one go to my house a did exactly as you said he gave me the numbers 11 windows at over 2000 a piece and now they are calling yo get the this night only deal
WOW, that's crazy!
I've just started the process of looking for replacement windows for my 1922 bungalow, and your videos have been invaluable! Thank you so much for all of the information!
Nikki, thank you for watching!
El mejor video que he visto hasta ahora sobre el tema, y créame si le digo que he visto decenas de ellos. Muchas gracias y saludos desde España
Gracias por su comentario!
Thanks for the video. It sounds like single hung give the best efficiency which I always assumed but you now have me thinking a single hung with one sash tilt out is kind of pointless and a single hung non tilt ou may be the best way to go for max efficiency.
Thanks great job explaining.
This was incredibly helpful! Too bad we aren't in Texas because you pretty much sold me on exactly what we need!
Thank you for watching. We do have a lot of great window dealers that we can recommend. Where do you live?

Glad it was helpful!
I always washed double hang window by myself, just rest the window on the chair, it is easy and I laughed when you explained about the difficulty some people had,....wow some people have serious problems lol
Yes they do..
We're in market for windows...learning a lot.

Thanks for the tip!
@@HoustonWindowExperts thanks for mentioning the wind... I live in Florida so I wont buy double hung until they make a change!
Very informative videos!
Excelente explicación hermano estaba apunto de comprar ventanas baratas y me puse a buscar Videos así es que te encontré y me encanta tu explicación ojalá que estuvieras acá en Carolina del Norte
at 7:00 minutes into the video you are pointing out how hard it is to clean a double-hung tip in window
and I agree it is hard, but I have single-hung windows and it is not possible, at all, to clean the top sash. So I must hire a company that has very long ladders to get high enough to clean the top sash.
Agreed
Great informative video Jeff.
